The Transgressive Stage: The Culture of Public Entertainment in Late Victorian Toronto

Ernst, Christopher 15 November 2013 (has links)
“The Transgressive Stage: The Culture of Public Entertainment in Late Victorian Toronto,” argues that public entertainment was one of the most important sites for the negotiation of identities in late Victorian Toronto. From the vantage point of the twenty-first century, where theatre is strictly highbrow, it is difficult to appreciate the centrality of public entertainment to everyday life in the nineteenth century. Simply put, the Victorian imagination was populated by melodrama and minstrelsy, Shakespeare and circuses. Studying the responses to these entertainments, greatly expands our understanding of Victorian culture. The central argument of this dissertation is that public entertainment spilled over the threshold of the playhouse and circus tent to influence the wider world. In so doing, it radically altered the urban streetscape, interacted with political ideology, promoted trends in consumption, as well as exposed audiences to new intellectual currents about art and beauty. Specifically, this study examines the moral panic surrounding indecent theatrical advertisements; the use by political playwrights of tropes from public entertainment as a vehicle for political satire; the role of the stage in providing an outlet for Toronto’s racial curiosity; the centrality of commercial amusements in defining the boundaries of gender; and, finally, the importance of the theatre—particularly through the Aesthetic Movement—in attempts to control the city’s working class. When Torontonians took in a play, they were also exposing themselves to one of the most significant transnational forces of the nineteenth century. British and American shows, which made up the bulk of what was on offer in the city, brought with them British and American perspectives. The latest plays from London and New York made their way to the city within months, and sometimes weeks, of their first production. These entertainments introduced audiences to the latest thoughts, fashion, slang and trends. They also confronted playgoers with issues that might, on the surface seem foreign and irrelevant. Nevertheless, they quickly adapted to the environment north of the border. Public entertainment in Toronto came to embody a hybridized culture with a promiscuous co-mingling of high and low and of British and American influences.

Encounter space to connect with  The “Self”  1-2-1 performances : through Circus and Movement practices

Palomar, Gemma January 2018 (has links)
This research was based on the idea of creating a space of encounter and of an encounter in space. The initial idea was to create a participatory/immersive installation framed within relational aesthetics and contemporary circus: focusing on a vital language that celebrates movement /dance, play, imagination and the magic of life. But through the process I left the concept of installation and I aim for an encounter space: blurring the boundaries with fields such as Movement, Dance Theatre, Improvisation, Circus, etc… A research to explore and develop the relationship with others, specially the audience. And how the audience can become a participant through 1-2-1 performances. Furthermore, I wanted to focus on the process of the research (inspirations, methodology, detect obstacles, making space…) rather than the outcome. The main thread is: Connecting with the “Self” state. ____reVisionesA research in how to facilitate a state of connection, essence, spontaneity and honesty to oneself, though around the idea of an immersive experience for the visitor/participant. “reVisiones” aims to create a space of encounter where participants can focus on awareness of the connection between their Body/Mind/Spirit: a "Transitional Space" where they can observe, be moved or move within as they please.

The current paper lies in the career of Celina Ferreira, an actress who was born in the state of Bahia, in Senhor do Bonfim city, in the year of 1902. Her journey crosses many theatrical genres, known here as “productive-artistic arrengements”, which were part of the cultural panorama in the beggining of the 20th century in Brazil, especially in the northeast of the country. Celina Ferreira began her career as a member of itinerant companies- called mambembes, which traveled around the region in the twenties and thirties. She got married to Ferreira da Silva, a comedy actor that was born in Pernambuco and was a theater revue specialist. As a widow, she took place in Salvador with her sons and worked at Fekete Circus, in the forties, acting in typical brazilian theatre-circus dramas. At last, she retired as a “radio-actress”, and had worked for Excelsior and Sociedade radios. For this last one mentioned, she worked until middle sixties. Based on personal family files, kept by her sons, and organized for academic aims, this research focused on the popularity of the theatrical styles that she was part of, as well as the strategies used by artists, entrepreneurs and organizations in order to guarantee the artists and products survival. This research also brought a political, economic and social approach, with aspects that were part of the actress career and motivated the “productive-artistic arrengements” support, successfully experienced by her.

Oliveira, Josiane Silva de January 2014 (has links)
The aim of this thesis was to discuss the relationship between everyday practices and emotions in organizational process of contemporary circus. For this purpose, a multisited ethnographic study in the context Brazil - Canada between the years 2011 in the Brazilian city of Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, and 2013 was held in the Canadian city of Montreal, in the province of Quebec. In the first theoretical basis of this study, I realize a discussion about the political dimension of practices, ways of making social subjects, in everyday organizational processes highlighting (i)mobility of organizations in Organizational Studies. Indeed, consider the organizational routine as spaces of practices that constitute micro - politics of everyday life - in the midst of a normative management processes. The micro refer to the comparison of practical relations with logical action of certain historical and culturally; present a procedural nature, because the forms of organization are multiple and interconnected spaces in practice; produce effects in everyday life due to its relational character with normative spheres of society. Highlight the emotions like practices in organizational routine that to be articulated to other daily practices form the emotional political dimension of organizational processes. One of the identified effects of emotional politics in the everyday work of the circus was the production of multiple spatialities that despite, enable circuses by seeking recognition of their artistic legitimacy, produced counterpoints regarding the order established in the political field of the arts in the cities studied. Indeed, circuses could be understood as organizational heterotopic spaces, or spaces constituting the social order, but their practical relations established reverse forces. Thus, the thesis that I defend in this paper is that the relationship between everyday practices and emotions are emotional politics of organizational processes resulting in the production of heterotopias. The main results of this research highlight the importance of emotions in organizations showing how practical elements for the development of a Political Theory of Emotions in Organizational Studies. The methodological contribution that I present in this thesis is the appropriation of multisited ethnography as a research strategy for understanding organizations that are based on socio- spatial mobility and in different locations. In terms applied to management, the survey results highlight that the creative process of circus performers is centered on a collective dynamic, engaging in conversation as relevant to the transmission of knowledge of artistic production and the realization of creative residencies in different cultural contexts as a basis for technical training and social development of the circus. On the process of training of artists, highlight the need to incorporate studies on the collective dimension of organizing the training of circus performers in circus schools and the subject cultural producer as articulator of artistic practices to management practices.

L2 et EPS réunis dans un projet commun. Le cirque en CLIN. Quels effets sur l'apprentissage du français ? / L2 and PE gathered in a common project. The circus for new comers children. What effects on the learning of French?

Hapel, Françoise 09 October 2012 (has links)
This research is situated in the field of language teaching. It is based on an experience of teaching French through a circus arts project, conducted in a primary school with a group of children aged 6 to 11, recently arrived in France. The hypothesis is that circus activities through the emotions involved and the implied situations of communication lead to spontaneous speech and have a positive effect of L2 oral production. The steps of the project take into account the evolution of emotions developed in these artistic activities: - Move to feel moved - See and feel moved – Give to see for spectators to feel moved. The analysis of the tasks in the light of language acquisition theories leads to a better understanding of the impact of this project on learners’ oral production of French. The analysis of the oral production, the examination of the investment of learners in the project and of emotions they expressed, allow me to highlight certain elements of the link between emotion, investment and L2 acquisition. After measuring the scope and limits of this study, I can suggest a few perspectives and advice for the establishment of a circus project involving L2 acquisition.

: passion, émotions et politique / Spectators in the Roman circus from the 1st century BC to the 6th century AD : passion, emotions and politics

Forichon, Sylvain 07 January 2015 (has links)
Passion for Roman circus games, and especially for chariot races, appears as a topos in ancient literature. Even if ancient authors frequently evoke the excitement of the audience, this excitement often attracts moral condemnations and stereotypes rather than critical analysis and there are very few testimonies coming from chariot races enthusiasts, as it may be noted in the first part of the thesis. This study aims to overcome these prejudices in order to explain the reasons for such an enthusiasm. In the second part, after confronting data coming from textual sources with what recent works in psychology of emotion and sociology of sport can teach us, we demonstrate the link between passion for the games and the emotions provoked by those spectacles. This passion, indeed, was mainly entertained by the intensity of the emotions, resulting themselves from the sensory overload which the spectators experienced, from the moment they were reaching the circus to the end of the games. This passion may be due to factors intrinsic to the show. Considering this aspect as well as the growing interest of the power for circenses at the end of the Republic, the third part examines the exploitation of the games for political purposes. Even if army leaders, such as Pompey and Caesar, well understood all the benefits they could derive in terms of popularity, and even if the circenses started to be, from Augustus on, an integral part of imperial policy, it would be a mistake to see the spectators simply as a crowd manipulated by political power. It appears that the spectators enjoyed considerable authority over this place, not only in relation to the conduct of the games, but also even in relation to the emperor, insomuch as the power struggle between the emperor and his subjects could sometimes be reversed. On several occasions, indeed, the circus was the scene of the crowd’s hostility against the emperor or his relatives, and in many such cases, the demonstrators were successful. It seems that it was customary for the emperor to show clemency within the circus. However, it is important not to generalise about the participants of protests and not to consider them simply as a plebeian mob. Such protests were in all likelihood often carefully orchestrated and planned in advance; it seems clear that only members of the senatorial or equestrian orders had the human resources and logistical capacity to achieve that.

PROFESSORES NA CORDA BAMBA: AS ATIVIDADES CIRCENSES NA FORMAÇÃO INICIAL ENQUANTO CONTEÚDO DA EDUCAÇÃO FÍSICA / TIGHTROPE TEACHERS: CIRCUS ACTIVITIES IN THE INITIAL FORMATION AS PHYSICAL EDUCATION SUBJECT

Caramês, Aline de Souza 14 April 2014 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This study started from the experiences with circus activities at school environment with the intention to take them to the university. It had as the main objective to verify the contributions and effects that the circus activities offered in an initial formation to physical education teachers and to the school students, which are taught by academics that are working as trainees. The methodology characterized as participating research that had a work proposal done with 10 academics of the physical education center of Santa Maria Federal University from the bachelor‟s degree, matriculated in the III Managed Curricular Trainee subject (elementary students). They participated from 12 reflexive meetings with theoretical and practical subjects about circus activities. At the same time the trainees had the opportunity to teach circus activities in their trainings. By the end they were submitted to an interview about the importance to work with this subject in the physical education. The trainees found some positives aspects as the help in the planning, student motivation s, increase and valorization of the physical education, expressiveness improvement and an establishment of social relations with the practices. They found some difficulties that were opposition in the school environment, difficulties to deal with some students, the lack of some adequate materials and a little time of formation. It is possible to conclude that the subject appropriation was relevant to the initial formation that makes possible the knowledge amplification of the future teachers related to the corporal practices.

"We protect animals well" : A structural approach to abusive conduct within circus schools

Matthis, Rosa January 2021 (has links)
This master thesis investigates abusive conduct in circus schools. Focus is put on the management level in order to achieve and provide knowledge of measures and attitudes related to prevention. The theoretical framework for the thesis is built on understanding knowledge as situated and the creation of normative borders producing ways for practitioners of identifying with artistic disciplines. Moreover, the thesis takes a structural understanding of abusive conduct. Stating the lack of research within circus schools, the thesis builds upon a research background relying on sports and academia as fields of reference. Research from these related fields are argued to help artistic education such as circus schools to make up for lost time. The data of this thesis comes from a survey conducted within a global federation of professional circus schools, FEDEC, and the results were thematically analyzed in eight categories. The results reflect circus schools as mainly willing actors against abusive conduct. However, the survey also shows a discipline that is in need of deeper knowledge in order to better apply policies and effectively prevent abuse. The respondents show varying degrees of uncertainty regarding policies and in certain cases refer to direct unwillingness to engage with designated safeguarding procedures, attitudes that must be seen as incompatible with management of any artistic school. In conclusion, this thesis argues that circus (and indeed other artistic) schools are in need of better knowledge and further research in order to better account for transparency, active leadership and bystanding dynamics within the specific social fields of the respective disciplines. Finally it is suggested that further research into identifying and naming problems related to cultures of abuse may help circus schools and other social actors within Circus to put these questions on the agenda. / <p>The English version was examinated 2021-06-11 and published 2021-07-01.
