This research aimed to facilitate and describe the transformation of the counselling practices of primary care clinicians who participated in an interprofessional community of practice on motivational interviewing (ICP-MI).
Using a qualitative design, this participatory action research (Kemmis and McTaggart, 2005, Kemmis et al., 2014) brought together 16 primary care clinicians (nurses, nutritionists, kinesiologists, family physicians and a psychologist). They were divided into four ICP-MIs that have progressed in parallel during seven meetings spread over a period of ten months.
Qualitative data has been collected through the research journal of the doctoral student during the study. The participant observation of ICP-MI meetings was conducted partly using the six-step approach of the professional co-development group (see Article I). Focus groups were also facilitated at the last meeting of each ICP-MI. The non-participant observation of the nurse/patient consultations followed by semi-structured individual interviews with observed participants concluded the data collection. The inductive general approach described by Thomas (2006) guided the research activities related to data analysis.
The results revealed two types of processes involved in MI learning among the participating clinicians (see Article II and Article III). On the one hand, they have developed through processes of MI appropriation as the clinicians underwent a paradigmatic shift from a perception of their professional role as health experts to that of health guides. Their personal traits, their clinical background, and the perpetuation of a culture of clinician-centred rather than patient-centred care have influenced these processes. On the other hand, they followed four processes involved in MI implementation in primary care: ambivalence, introspection, experimentation, and mobilization. The clinicians’ personal traits, their perception of MI as a clinical priority as well as organizational support constituted the factors of influence of these processes. Therefore, a training program on MI was developed to support in a humanistic and motivational way the
6
transformation of counselling practices in primary care. The external facilitation of ICP-MI using a variety of training activities is thus suggested (see Article IV). The improvement of collaborative practices, professional satisfaction, psychological health at work and clinical leadership has been documented as a benefit (see Article V). Nurse empowerment has also been reported, which in turn has enhanced patient satisfaction with primary care nursing practice based on MI.
This research describes the contribution of ICP to facilitate MI appropriation and its implementation in primary care. The training program facilitated the paradigmatic and behavioural changes targeted for and by the participating clinicians, especially through external facilitation of communities of practice and the interdisciplinary context of this participatory study. In addition to improving counselling practices, various benefits have been documented supporting the potential of this approach.

This paper is a case study of a local francophonie and the reinterpretation of the imaginary of a Francophone community. We focused on the case of Bulgaria and its Bulgarian francophone community. Then we questioned the reinterpretation of the imaginary of the Bulgarian French-speaking community since 1989. To answer this question, we analysed the Bulgarian Ministry of Education's curricula for learning French as a foreign language and the textbooks used in bilingual French-speaking Bulgarian high schools. We also interviewed leading Bulgarian politicians, francophone diplomats and French teachers.
Our results show that the Bulgarian francophone community imaginary has been reinterpreted according to two logics. On the one hand, into a desire to Europeanise the French language and French-speaking Bulgarian, meaning, to interpret French as the language of Europe, and then to form a plurilingual European individual. The second aim is to extend the French-speaking Bulgarian imaginary and the French language in Bulgaria to other local francophonies, rather than having only a francocentric vision. These two aspirations have been supported by francophonists - individuals who have rethought the representations of the French language and the definition of the Bulgarian francophonie. These francophonists were placed in various institutions in Bulgaria, notably within the Association des Professeurs de et en français de Bulgarie. Alongside the actions of these individuals, other structures and individuals in place have supported or moderated these two aspirations - sometimes maintaining Francocentrism within the Bulgarian Francophone imaginary.

EchtzeitmusikBlazanovic, Marta 03 June 2014 (has links)
The Echtzeitmusik scene is a contemporary music scene that emerged in Berlin in the mid-1990s and evolved into an extensive and musically diverse local, yet extremely international community of musicians, who are involved in improvised and experimental music. The term ‘Echtzeitmusik’, literally meaning ‘real-time music’, marked the distinction between the younger and older generation of Berlin improvisers. The younger musicians had soon developed a specific sound aesthetic and approach to improvising, often labeled as ‘Berlin Reductionism’, and identified themselves as ‘composer-performers’. The musical developments in the Echtzeitmusik scene can be contextualized within the traditions of both Free Improvisation and John Cage’s compositional theory; on the other hand, the scene’s emergence, development and existence have been strongly influenced by the unique spatial, social and economic context of the post-wall Berlin from the early 1990s until today. The Echtzeitmusik scene is an example of a highly autonomous field of cultural production, in which the most important type of capital and means of “power” is the so-called symbolic capital (reputation), based on the musicians’ cultural capital (e.g. musical skill and individuality) and even more on their social capital (social relations). The distribution of symbolic capital within the scene is manifested in its, at first sight hidden, hierarchy. The members of the scene share a common symbolic level and take part in a clearly structured and organized scene-life. Both social and musical actions of the scene’s members show commonalities and regularities, which are explained by Bourdieu’s concept of habitus. The scene’s discourse plays an essential role in the processes of identification, distinction and community-making, as well as regulating the practice within the scene, by serving as a point of orientation on the inside and towards the outside.

Using technology to support collaborative learning through assessment designDoolan, Martina A. January 2011 (has links)
This thesis offers an assessment design for collaborative learning, utilisation of blended learning support through current communication technologies and highlights the crucial role of the tutor. The thesis designed and tested a theoretical framework which encompassed an active learning environment and resulted in the development of the shamrock conceptual framework. To test the theoretical framework, clarify the role of the tutor and the impact on the learner experience two studies were undertaken using pedagogical models that combined the concepts of learner-centric, sociocultural and dialogic perspectives on collaborative learning and technology in meeting the needs of learners in the 21st Century. In the first study, the role of the tutor was found to be crucial in setting, implementing and guiding learners using the assessment design as part of a social constructivist pedagogical practice. The pedagogical approach adopted was to blend face-to-face and Wiki learning experiences and was found to promote learner ownership, engagement and the fostering of a learning community. The second study validated the first and provided additional asynchronous technology experiences in addition to the Wiki blend in the assessment design. Study 2 examined the role of the tutor and the learner whilst using current technologies comprising podcasts and video and a Wiki in the collaborative experience. Findings showed that the Wiki supported community and collaborative aspects of a sociocultural practice whilst learners were engaged in authentic learning activities and led to a well supported learning environment. The importance of technology design and use to accommodate collaborative and community aspects was found to be an essential component. It was found that technology is not simply an add-on but rather needs to be planned and considered purposefully by both tutors and learners when used in a blend to supplement learning on campus as part of an assessment design in higher education. This study has shown that, for this to happen, academics need to be provided with the appropriate support, knowledge and skills required in developing a blended learning experience using a Wiki supplemented by class contact on campus as part of an assessment design.

E-learning technologies for open distance learning knowledge acquisition in managerial accountingKashora, Trust 07 1900 (has links)
This research seeks to establish how e-learning may contribute towards knowledge
construction for Management Accounting students at the University of South Africa.
More specifically, the research is designed to investigate how educational
technologies like e-learning may benefit and improve the teaching and learning of
Management Accounting at Unisa. Educators need to understand how students learn
so that they can establish suitable learning strategies. Studies have shown that
generally, e-learning applications are little used, sometimes because of inappropriate
content and technologies. Other prohibitive factors are costs, poor or inadequate
technology infrastructure and a shortage of human resources. On the strength of a
comprehensive literature survey, a framework to address and manage challenging
aspects of teaching and e-learning were developed. Problem areas and critical
success factors were considered.
The said framework ought to assist with organising complex issues and reveal parts
that need further work. The utility of the framework was evaluated through a staged
process. First, it was tested and evaluated through the model of a lecture. Secondly,
both qualitative and quantitative surveys among university lectures and students were
conducted to further confirm the applicability of the framework. Though the outcome
of the validations were satisfactory, more research needs to be carried out over a
longer period of time in order to determine the scalability of the framework and to
remove any inconsistencies. Aspects of the framework could be used to incorporate ICTs, e.g. the use of spreadsheets and the Learning Village into communities of
practice.

The use of mobile communication technology in professional identity development : a case of using whatsapp messenger to teach inquiry-based pedagogy to university chemistry teachersMutanga, Patrick 07 May 2021 (has links)
Abstracts in English, Zulu and Setswana / This study investigated the feasibility of using WhatsApp Messenger as a tool to enhance the professional identity and inquiry-based pedagogy through the professional development of university chemistry teachers. The epistemological interpretive paradigm was used to guide the study. The study assumed a naturalistic, exploratory investigation. The qualitative research methodology was used to conduct the study. Nine university teachers were purposively sampled from three universities (three teachers from each university) for the study. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, participant observations, and focus group discussions. Data analysis was completed using the thematic networks analysis. Ethics considerations were observed by not disclosing personal information of the participants or information about the universities where they represented. This study was guided by four theoretical underpinnings: the connectivism theory, the transformative learning theory, the expectancy-value theory, and the dual systems theory. The primary research question guiding this study was: How does the professional identity of university chemistry teachers develop as they learn IBP through WhatsApp Messenger? A two-pronged approach was used in the research: (1) comparing the professional identity of the teachers before and after the course, and (2) observing and describing the professional identity process as the teachers undertook the course.
The results from the interviews conducted before the teachers undertook the WhatsApp Messenger-based IBP course showed that most teachers had a negative professional identity. They had become teachers for a variety of reasons, but they did not consider themselves teachers and believed they would leave university teaching if opportunities arose in the industry. They had no formal qualifications in pedagogy, and they did not believe that such knowledge was necessary. The majority of these teachers used teacher-centred approaches. Results from participant observations during the WhatsApp Messenger-based IBP course showed that the course slowly imparted to the teachers the norms associated with not only IBP, but other teaching approaches as well. WhatsApp Messenger provided a flexible online platform where the teachers interacted and exchanged ideas without the need to meet in a physical space. The results from the interviews conducted after the teachers participated in the WhatsApp Messenger-based IBP course showed that the participants' professional identity had changed positively. They now recognised the importance of pedagogy in teaching, they positively identified with the teaching profession, and some were considering acquiring formal qualifications in pedagogy. / Lolu cwaningo beluphenya ithuba lokusetshenziswa kwangempela kwe-WhatsApp Messenger njengethuluzi lokuqinisa isithombe sesisebenzi kanye nohlelo lokufundisa olwencike phezu kophenyo lothisha besifundo seKhemistri (chemistry) enyuvesi, ngohlelo lokuthuthukisa abasebenzi. Immigration, Literacy, and Mobility: A Critical Ethnographic Study of Well-educated Chinese Immigrants’ Trajectories in CanadaWang, Lurong 13 June 2011 (has links)
This dissertation interrogates the deficit assumptions about English proficiency of skilled immigrants who were recruited by Canadian governments between the late 1990s and early 2000s. Through the lens of literacy as social practice, the eighteen-month ethnographic qualitative research explores the sequential experiences of settlement and economic integration of seven well-educated Chinese immigrant professionals. The analytical framework is built on sociocultural approaches to literacy and learning, as well as the theories of discourses and language reproduction. Using multiple data sources (observations, conversational interviews, journal and diary entries, photographs, documents, and artifacts collected in everyday lives), I document many different ways that well-educated Chinese immigrants take advantage of their language and literacy skills in English across several social domains of home, school, job market, and workplace.
Examining the trans-contextual patterning of the participants’ language and literacy activities reveals that immigrant professionals use literacy as assistance in seeking, negotiating, and taking hold of resources and opportunities within certain social settings. However, my data show that their language and literacy engagements might not always generate positive consequences for social networks, job opportunities, and upward economic mobility. Close analyses of processes and outcomes of the participants’ engagements across these discursive discourses make it very clear that the monolithic assumptions of the dominant language shape and reinforce structural barriers by constraining their social participation, decision making, and learning practice, and thereby make literacy’s consequences unpredictable. The deficit model of language proficiency serves the grounds for linguistic stereotypes and economic marginalization, which produces profoundly consequential effects on immigrants’ pathways as they strive for having access to resources and opportunities in the new society.
My analyses illuminate the ways that language and literacy create the complex web of discursive spaces wherein institutional agendas and personal desires are intertwined and collide in complex ways that constitute conditions and processes of social and economic mobility of immigrant populations. Based on these analyses, I argue that immigrants’ successful integration into a host country is not about the mastery of the technical skills in the dominant language. Rather, it is largely about the recognition and acceptance of the value of their language use and literacy practice as they attempt to partake in the globalized new economy.
