THE EQUIVALENCE PROBLEM FOR ORTHOGONALLY SEPARABLE WEBS ON SPACES OF CONSTANT CURVATURE

Cochran, Caroline 09 June 2011 (has links)
This thesis is devoted to creating a systematic way of determining all inequivalent orthogonal coordinate systems which separate the Hamilton-Jacobi equation for a given natural Hamiltonian defined on three-dimensional spaces of constant, non-zero curvature. To achieve this, we represent the problem with Killing tensors and employ the recently developed invariant theory of Killing tensors. Killing tensors on the model spaces of spherical and hyperbolic space enjoy a remarkably simple form; even more striking is the fact that their parameter tensors admit the same symmetries as the Riemann curvature tensor, and thus can be considered algebraic curvature tensors. Using this property to obtain invariants and covariants of Killing tensors, together with the web symmetries of the associated orthogonal coordinate webs, we establish an equivalence criterion for each space. In the case of three-dimensional spherical space, we demonstrate the surprising result that these webs can be distinguished purely by the symmetries of the web. In the case of three-dimensional hyperbolic space, we use a combination of web symmetries, invariants and covariants to achieve an equivalence criterion. To completely solve the equivalence problem in each case, we develop a method for determining the moving frame map for an arbitrary Killing tensor of the space. This is achieved by defining an algebraic Ricci tensor. Solutions to equivalence problems of Killing tensors are particularly useful in the areas of multiseparability and superintegrability. This is evidenced by our analysis of symmetric potentials defined on three-dimensional spherical and hyperbolic space. Using the most general Killing tensor of a symmetry subspace, we derive the most general potential “compatible” with this Killing tensor. As a further example, we introduce the notion of a joint invariant in the vector space of Killing tensors and use them to characterize a well-known superintegrable potential in the plane. xiii

Radiated Electric and Magnetic Fields Caused by Lightning Return Strokes to the Toronto CN Tower

Boev, Ivan Krasimirov 05 August 2010 (has links)
In the present PhD work, three sophisticated models based on the "Engineering" modeling approach have been utilized to conveniently describe and thoroughly analyze details of Lightning events at the CN Tower. Both the CN Tower and the Lightning Channel are represented by a number of connected in series Transmission Line sections in order to account for the variations in the shape of the tower and for plasma processes that take place within the Lightning Channel. A sum of two Heidler functions is used to describe the "uncontaminated" Return Stroke current, which is injected at the attachment point between the CN Tower and the Lightning Channel. Reflections and refractions at all points of mismatched impedances are considered until their contribution becomes less than 1% of the originally injected current wave. In the proposed models, the problem with the current discontinuity at the Lightning Channel front, commonly taken care of by introducing a "turn-on" term when computing radiation fields, is uniquely treated by introducing reflected and transmitted components. For the first time, variable speed of propagation of the Return Stroke current front has been considered and its influence upon the predicted current distributions along the whole Lightning Channel path and upon the radiated distant fields analyzed. Furthermore, as another novelty, computation of the electromagnetic field is accomplished in Cartesian Coordinates. This fact permits to relax the requirement on the verticality of the Lightning Channel, normally imposed in Cylindrical Coordinates. Therefore, it becomes possible to study without difficulty the influence of a slanted Lightning Channel upon the surrounding electromagnetic field. Since the proposed sophisticated Five-Section Model has the capability to represent very closely the structure of the CN Tower and to emulate faithfully the shape of, as well as physical processes within the Lightning Channel, it is believed to have the potential of truthfully reproducing observed fields. The developed modeling approach can be easily adapted to study the anticipated radiated fields at tall structures even before construction.

Design of High Performance Computing Software for Genericity and Variability

Ljungberg, Malin January 2007 (has links)
Computer simulations have emerged as a cost efficient complement to laboratory experiments, as computers have become increasingly powerful. The aim of the present work is to explore the ideas of some state of the art software development practices, and ways in which these can be useful for developing high performance research codes. The introduction of these practices, and the modular designs that they give rise to, raises issues regarding a potential conflict between runtime efficiency on one hand and development efficiency on the other. Flexible software modules, based on mathematical abstractions, will provide support for convenient implementation and modification of numerical operators. Questions still remain about whether such modules will provide the efficiency which is required for high performance applications. To answer these questions, investigations were performed within two different problem domains. The first domain consisted of modular frameworks for the numerical solution of Partial Differential Equations. Such frameworks proved a suitable setting, since several of my research questions revolved around the issue of modularity. The second problem domain was that of symmetry exploiting algorithms. These algorithms are based on group theory, and make ample use of mathematical abstractions from that field. The domain of symmetry exploiting algorithms gave us opportunities to investigate difficulties in combining modularity based on high level abstractions with low level optimizations using data layout and parallelization. In conclusion, my investigation of software development practices for the area of high performance computing has proved very fruitful indeed. I have found that none of the concerns that were raised should lead us to refrain from the use of the practices that I have considered. On the contrary, in the two case studies presented here, these practices lead to designs that perform well in terms of usability as well as runtime efficiency.

The RTM process is widely used for the production of high quality composite materials. Computer simulations can play an important role in the optimization of this process, reducing costs and increasing efficiency. In this work, it was developed a 2D transient mathematical model for the mold filling stage in RTM process which predicts the twophase flow (air-resin) through porous media. The set of partial differential equations, written in boundary fitted coordinates, is discretized using the finite volume method in a fully implicit approach and solved by using the Newton’s method. It was developed a computational simulator with pre- and post-processing tools to help the definition of simulations parameters and the visualization of the results. To validate the mathematical methodology, numerical results for filling time, flow front position, injection pressure and injection flow rate for rectilinear and radial flows were compared to analytical results from known models. The model was employed to describe the fluid flow of a vegetable oil in a glass fiber preform within a rectangular cavity and the results were compared to experimental data. Some cases involving arbitrary irregular boundaries were also simulated. The proposed model and the simulator generated physically consistent results of the process variables.

This work aims to study the heat transfer behavior in jackfruit pulp packed in cylindrical container. The study presents the solution to the diffusion equation type boundary condition for first variable. A physical-mathematical model for solving the problem of a direct two-dimensional diffusion of heat in the interior of a cylindrical container containing jackfruit pulp has been developed. The finite volume method with fully implicit formulation was used to solve the direct problem and therefore, determine the temperature distribution. The medium viscous, homogeneous and isotropic, was considered stationary and thus any radioactive and convective exchanges within the medium they were neglected. Two software in Fortran were developed first to find the solution of the estimated thermal diffusivity problem using as objective function, the chi-square and also for solving the direct problem it self. Together, an experimental apparatus was used to analyze the reverse (inverse problem). The experimental physical system consisted of using two cylindrical aluminum containers of different dimensions, which were filled with jackfruit pulp for which the thermal diffusivity is estimated. Two thermocouples connected to a digital two channel thermometer measured temperatures at the center and at the interface between the pulp and the container. The measures were sent to a computer via RS-232 and saved in a file, through the Data Logger software. Concerning to the direct problem a two-dimensional heat conduction model with radial and axial symmetry it has been used for the transient response of the measured temperatures at the center and the cylinder contour. Compared to literature values, the results obtained were consistent, so, the software developed in this work can be considered valid and this can be used for other simulations the results. Also showed that the proposed solution represents satisfactorily the heat treatment process of wrapped jackfruit pulp in cylindrical packaging providing food security with a lower energy cost. As we know the thermal diffusivity an depending on the local temperature is possible to determine the timing of heat treatment, making it unnecessary to perform experiments each time a new cylindrical container is used to store the product.

With this purpose, q project of a mirror and softwares that allow estimate the coordinates, and its uncertainties, of targets visualized through the mirror was developed. For the work development, 3D virtual models of different scenarios were made, employing CAD, and softwares, in which estimations of topographic coordinates of the targets and its uncertainties were made, were developed. Concludes that measuring the coordinates of the fiducial marks with a precision of one millimeter, the uncertainties on the coordinates of the real targets are above the centimeter and that instead of employing fiducial marks recorded in the mirror, is better to add graduated circles that allow measure the angles of attitude. With a precision of five seconds in the angles and millimeter on the coordinates of the targets comes to the accuracy better than the centimeter on the coordinates of the real targets.

In the last few years, the study of ceramic materials has increased very fast, mainly studies related to advanced ceramics. The several applications of these materials as ceramic pigments in nanometric scale justify more and more the need for a better understanding of the influence of the dopant addition on the final properties of the materials. In this present work, it was studied structural and morphological properties of ceramic pigments based on cerium oxide (CeO2) and doped with differents molar percentages of lanthanum (5 and 10%) and praseodymium (1%). The goal of this work was to obtain nanosized ceramic pigments with a low-toxicity. The chemical route adopted to obtain materials was the polymeric precursor method. The nanoparticles were structurally characterized by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Raman Spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and X-Ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). Optical characterization was carried out using the results of diffuse reflectance to obtain the colorimetric coordinates. The XRD patterns and Raman spectra indicate the formation of crystalline solid solutions with single phase and cubic structure (fluorite), all belongs to the space group Fm3m. The obtained grain size was in nanoscale range, 20 to 30 nm, according to MEV. By diffuse reflectance tecnique and colorimetric coordinates were verified that the CeO2 and CL (cerium oxide doped with lanthanum) samples possess yellow coloration and the CLP (cerium oxide doped with lanthanum and praseodymium) and CP (cerium oxide doped with praseodymium) samples present coloration that varies from magenta-orange to red-brown. More intense shades were obtained in pigments doped with praseodymium at 800 ºC temperature.

Interactions et résonances dans les systèmes quantiques / Interactions and resonances in quantum systems

Saget, Guillaume 15 December 2017 (has links)
This thesis book is concerned with the interactions and resonances in quantum systems and is subdivided into three thematics. First, our work is aimed at constructing in the local limit a systematic method for a normalized vibrational Hamiltonian for a strongly excited n-degree-of-freedom molecular system from the generators of the Lie algebra, the algebra of the invariant polynomials built in classical mechanics from the the kernel of the adjoint operator adH0 . We present both the method of construction in case of absence and in case of a p : q resonance system with n degrees of freedom. Application to the non-linear triatomic molecule ClOH is then given. On the other hand, by using the LTPA Algorithm, we realize normalisation of linear triatomic molecules and we compare in case of the CO2 molecule our results to those of authors who used to another approaches. Then, we are dealing with the Fermi interaction in order to show analogously to the building of Hamiltonians of non-linear molecules AB2, that this interaction is able to describe the transition of a atomic Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) to a molecular one. Finally, in the last chapter, we explore the non-adiabatic dynamics of a two-state system subject to excitation by a specific constant-amplitude periodic level-crossing model and we show that the evolution of the probability amplitudes of states is deduced from the Heun equation for a particular class of solutions. We also highlight three different behaviors for the detuning : non-crossing, crossing and level-glancing. For these two last behaviors, a 1 : 1 resonance occurs periodically between the system and the field.

Avaliação do uso de observáveis coletadas com receptores de navegação pessoal para determinação de coordenadas em linhas base curtas / Evaluation of the use of observable collected with receivers, personal navigation coordinates to determine base lines short

Cláudio Bielenki Júnior 12 December 2008 (has links)
In recent decades the use of equipment for positioning, particularly the personal navigation receivers gained relative importance, and the acquisition of these receivers has increased considerably. These eceivers, however, were not developed for task that requiring accuracy, because it estimate and store positions with precision and accuracy of the order of 03 to 15 meters, with 95% probability, do not store the code and carrier phase data and have no determined Xntennae center stage. With the provision of the protocol for data transmission of these receivers have been developed some programs and is connected to the receiver by way of hardware and software, extract and record the navigation observable (CA code and carrier phase). Thus, the use of the navigation eceivers staff to measurements of coordinates with good accuracy, based on short baselines, can become a great alternative to main measurement in Transport Engineering applications. The high cost of other technologies front to the proposal in this work is one of the difficulties found for a greater accuracy in the applied transports geodesic works. In this research it is looked to analyze the data processing of the L1 carrying phase and CA code collected with the aid of specific software, taking itself consideration changeable as in the baseline between the stations, the observation time, software and different equipments. The results was promising, confirming the benefits of storage observable from the personal navigation receivers for further post-processing to obtain accurate coordinates in short baselines.
