Using a Computer-adaptive Test Simulation to Investigate Test Coordinators' Perceptions of a High-stakes Computer-based Testing Program

Hogan, Tiffany 10 January 2014 (has links)
This case study examined the efficiency and precision of computer classification and adaptive testing to elicit responses from test coordinators on implementing a high-stakes computer-based testing. Test coordinators from five elementary schools located in a Georgia school district participated in the study. The school district administered state-made, high-stakes tests using paper and pencil; locally developed tests via the computer or paper and pencil. A post-hoc simulation program, Comprehensive Simulation of Computerized Adatpive Testing, used 586 student item responses to produce results with a variable termination point and classification termination point. Results from the simulation were analyzed and used in the case study to elicit interview responses from test coordinators. The photographs of computer-labs and test schedule documents were collected and analyzed to validate school test coordinators' responses. Test coordinators responded positively to the efficiency and precision of simulation results. Some test coordinators preferred the use of computer-adaptive tests for diagnostic purposes only. Test coordinators experiences focused on the security, the emotions, and the management of testing. The findings of this study will benefit those interested in implementing a high-stakes, computer-based testing program by recommending a simulation study be conducted and feedback by solicited from test coordinators prior to an operational test administration.

Um "mundo" de projetos culturais para jovens em periferias: violÃncia, valores morais e pedagogias de intervenÃÃo / A "world" of cultural projects for youth in urban peripheries: violence, moral values and pedagogies of intervention

JoÃo Miguel DiÃgenes de AraÃjo Lima 19 August 2014 (has links)
This research aims to understand the ways in which projects for youth in urban peripheries narrated by violence are organized and legitimized, in interactions with coordinators and participants of cultural projects in the neighborhoods of Greater Bom Jardim area in Fortaleza, Northeast Brazil. For over 20 years, cultural projects have been conducted as modes of pedagogical intervention among children and youth living in the outskirts of Brazilian cities. Proposed under the perspective of social vulnerability and violence prevention, cultural practices feature as means of transmission of moral and citizenship values. Accounts by youth considered successful are the most common showcase of such initiatives, spread by the media and, thus, understood in this analysis as ânarratives of transformationâ. In 2012, fieldwork focused on five cultural projects proposed by Greater Bom Jardim residents and awarded by a financing bid held by the Ministry of Culture and the National Program of Public Safety with Citizenship. In the everyday dynamics of projects, the relation between cultural practices and moral values among project coordinators and teachers became noticeable. Following these same agents in events and demonstrations against violence, connections among professional and institutions of the so-called âsocial fieldâ stood out. In the course of two years, combining ethnography and research on the Internet, analysis focused on the ways in which agents, practices and institutions constitute a âworldâ of cultural projects for youth in peripheries. Coordinators help to legitimize this âworldâ as they construct visibility and reputations, social networks and the spread of moral values for youth. Questions emerged as the author took part in the implementation of a project in the same neighborhood. Furthermore, initiatives proposed by youth for youth were studied through participant observation, interview and the collective production of a zine, which enabled to encounter a positive perception of the notion of youth protagonism. A new generation of project coordinators is in the making as youth enroll in workshops for project elaboration and foster social networks with youth throughout town, which suggest the extension of these practices. Thus, as the âworldâ of cultural projects for youth in peripheries is consolidated and its support mechanisms become more complex, paradoxes arise and contribute with relevant questions for the ways projects and public policies for youth are monitored and evaluated.

Gäreskog, Petra January 2020 (has links)
The overall aim of this licentiate thesis is to increase our knowledge about the division of labor in the work with children in need of special support in preschools as described by the occupational groups of preschool teachers and special educational needs coordinators (SENCOs). This is explored in two separate studies. In the first study, the tasks, perceptions, and roles of SENCOs in preschools are examined. The study is part of a total population study where all SENCOs in Sweden (n = 4252) who were examined by the examination acts of the years 2001, 2007, and 2008 were sent a questionnaire. In a later phase of the procedure, the responses from SENCOs who work in preschools were extracted from the survey. These responses were analysed in Study I involving 523 participants. The results show that SENCOs’ working hours are primarily spent on consultation. SENCOs further report that they are able to influence their colleagues’ views on children's difficulties to a high degree. Most SENCOs in the study believe that the most important reason why children encounter difficulties in preschools is that preschools are poorly adapted to deal with children's differences. The results of this study are theoretically interpreted on the basis of Abbott's (1988) reasoning about jurisdictional control. Persson's (1998) two perspectives on different ways of understanding children's difficulties, namely a categorical and a relational perspective, are also used to interpret the results. Study II analyses how preschool teachers describe which occupational group claims jurisdiction over the work with children in need of special support. The data consist of interviews with 15 preschool teachers. The analysis of the data is based on Abbott's (1988) division of professional work into three aspects: a) formulating a problem, b) reasoning about the problem, and c) treating the problem. The results show that the area where preschool teachers claim jurisdictional control is related to the formulation of the problem. Preschool teachers do not, on the other hand, seem to claim jurisdictional control over the part of professional work that concerns reasoning about the problem. The results show a contradictory image of the treatment of the problem. Preschool teachers sometimes describe themselves as claiming jurisdictional control over treatment and other times describe how SENCOs have jurisdiction over the treatment of the problem. In the licentiate thesis, Abbott's (1988) reasoning about jurisdiction of occupational groups and Persson's (1998) categorical and relational perspectives for understanding children's difficulties are brought together and put in relation to different perspectives on inclusion.

Samarbete mellan lärare, speciallärare och specialpedagoger i en inkluderande skola / Cooperation between teachers, special education teachers and specialeducational needs coordinators in an inclusive school

Thunberg, Emma January 2024 (has links)
The purpose of the study is to describe how the collaboration is perceived between teachers, special education teachers and special educational needs coordinators in their work to adapt and include teaching to each individual student. My questions that have formed the basis of my study are: How do teachers describe their collaboration with each other? How do teachers, special needs teachers and special educational needs coordinators describe that they collaborate around the adapted teaching? How do teachers perceive the cooperation with professionals in the school and what help do they describe that they receive? The study is relevant as there is a need for more knowledge and Swedish research that pays attention to the collaboration between teachers, special education teachers and special educational needs coordinators and how they work with adaptations and inclusion so that all students can achieve the curriculum goals. The study is qualitative and the empirical data has been collected through semi-structured interviews with teachers, special education teachers and one special educational needs coordinators. I used thematic analysis to analyze the interviews. The results show that the cooperation between the teachers and the professions is based on close communication, commonproblem solving, allocating resources correctly and giving the pupils the security they need both academically and socially. The obstacle that emerged was that there was not always time to discuss individual students.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Elizabeth Tagliatella Orfão.pdf: 4601785 bytes, checksum: 8fef7161053e25059ef3f9851c9dc251 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2018-04-25 / This paper aims at analyzing the contribution of the continuous education process developed by the Professional Training Center of Education (Centro de Capacitação de Profissionais da Educação), in 2017; with pedagogical coordinators who work in elementary schools in São Caetano do Sul. The study is founded on a critical, collaborative and reflexive perspective that, in creating collective spaces of exchanges and discussions, seeks to investigate the lived reality and its possibilities of reconstruction. With this focus, the professionals involved in the research are expected to discuss and seek answers to the day-to-day challenges of school through shared responsibility, commitment and improvement of the group. For this purpose, firstly a survey on the formative needs of the subjects involved was made and, later, a formative proposal in which the participants analyzed and discussed their challenges towards teacher education was elaborated. The Critical Collaborative Research (PCCol) (MAGALHÃES, 2004) methodologically bases this study once it discusses how the research course itself constitutes the possibility for all participants to learn in a more collaborative and interventional way. Data were produced by use of: 1. description of the activity context; 2. written evaluations; 3. pictures; and 4. audio recording, and analyzed with the support of the theoretical frame and the actions of critical reflection - describe, inform, confront and reconstruct (SMYTH, 1992). The results have pointed to the importance of creating spaces that provoke strangeness and continuous collective exchanges to expand the possibilities of intervention. This research can offer contributions in the elaboration of formative activities that may develop new ways of acting and thinking in the search for shared meanings to face the challenges that compose this process / A presente pesquisa tem como objetivo analisar a contribuição do processo formativo contínuo desenvolvido pelo Centro de Capacitação de Profissionais da Educação, em 2017, com coordenadores pedagógicos que atuam nas escolas do Ensino Fundamental II do município de São Caetano do Sul.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Alessandra Ruiz Barbosa Leite.pdf: 1695554 bytes, checksum: 5542e85ee4c6233659e3d92777847b83 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2018-08-30 / The research had as general objective to investigate the implications of the working conditions in the professional development of the pedagogical coordinators who work in Early Childhood Education Center agreed by the Municipal Department of Education of the city of São Paulo, as well as characterize these coordinators, learn about their training context and identify the elements that facilitate or complicate their professional development. The choice of research context, selected Early Childhood Education Centers, occurred due to the significant number of school units that care for babies and children in a partnership between Civil Society Organizations and the Municipal Department of Education of São Paulo city. In addition to the professional scope, there was a need as a researcher to know these individuals that work in these school units, since there is little research that addresses educational aspects in relation to partnerschools. The methodological approach was qualitative that allowed to know the context and working conditions of the coordinators from partnerschools by the participants' perspective. The data collection was done through a questionnaire with multiple choices and open questions applied to the coordinators of the Regional Education Board under study and the analysis of the data had as reference content analysis. It was possible to identify the many dimensions present in the performance of these coordinators, followed by the challenges presented in their context, linked to training issues and career conditions. The perceptions of coordinators revealed greater incidence of the facilitating aspects of their professional development, when we consider the frequency of responses, linked to the desire to continue growing professionally and to remain in the position. But they also pointed out the difficulties, highlighting the conditions of the career, such as: low salary; limited human resources framework; accumulation of function; lack of clarity of their attributions; lack of human support in daily challenges; the complexity of interpersonal relationships, especially as teachers; lack of infrastructure in some school units; the lack of inputs to carry out the work; the scarce formations that have access; the minute moments in his routine to carry out the training with the teachers; the lack of recognition of the maintainers and Municipal Department about the work developed. This research sought to announce some ways that allow the reflection on the continued formation of pedagogical coordinators of the partnerschools besides contributing to the discussions about the policies of early childhood education in the city of São Paulo / A pesquisa teve como objetivo geral investigar as implicações das condições de trabalho no desenvolvimento profissional das coordenadoras pedagógicas que atuam nos Centros de Educação Infantil conveniados da Secretaria Municipal de Educação da cidade de São Paulo, bem como caracterizar estas coordenadoras, conhecer o seu contexto de formação e identificar os elementos facilitadores ou dificultadores de seu desenvolvimento profissional.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Alessandra Olivieri Santos.pdf: 1811395 bytes, checksum: fbcd16d162c625dfdf562311a8904437 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-09-04 / This study aimed to provide a reflexive exercise to the Children Education teacher about her professional role as protagonist of the teaching action, pointing to the continuing formation and the guiding principles’ elaboration which may contribute to the education project of teachers in a Children Education Centre (CEC) from the Municipal Education System of São Paulo, located in the South end of the city. The research presented the following problematization: How the Pedagogical Coordinator may give a continuing formation to this teacher that allows her professional development and transform her pedagogical practices. In order to develop this work, a quantitative approach was used with the purpose of giving a new meaning for the work context and the educating space of six teachers, research subjects, aiming to understand their visions and world conceptions, their ways of acting and thinking through the life histories recalled in seven meetings of biographical workshops. The procedures used to produce the data were the questionnaire and life narratives based on the theories of Josso (2004) and Delory- Momberger (2006) and defined as a formative approach focused on the learning subject. In order to discuss the professional development, the research was supported by the theoretical assumptions of Imbernón (2011) who highlight the importance of thinking about the formation and the journey of the teaching professionalism. The life histories provided, to the teachers’ group, the building of a collaborative network of memories and meanings for the profession valorization and understanding, allowing to give a new meaning the space of continuous formation that the School should be. The teachers rebuilt their steps and thought about a formation and a voice of a professional group which fell itself invisible in front of the Education System. From the analysis, this study proposed guiding principles for a formation project which meet the individual needs of teachers, respecting the collective space in the Scholar Unity, enforcing the educational legislation and, mainly, contributing to changes in the pedagogical practices of teachers and to improve the teaching and learning process with babies and children in the Children Education / O presente estudo teve por objetivo propiciar ao professor de Educação Infantil um exercício reflexivo do seu papel profissional como protagonista da ação docente, visando à formação continuada e à formulação de princípios norteadores que possam contribuir no projeto de formação de professores em um Centro de Educação Infantil (CEI) da Rede Municipal de Ensino de São Paulo, localizado no extremo sul da cidade.

The methodological option used was the qualitative approach, which allows us to capture the different meanings of the experiences lived in the school environment (André, 1983). The data were collected through semi-structured interviews with three pedagogical coordinators, working in MSCEs organized with two periods for students and three periods for teachers. The data indicated that the Pedagogical Coordinators recognize their formative role, elaborate the training projects based on the observed needs and are concerned with qualifying the work performed in the intermediate shift. Also, it was possible to verify that the mismatch of the working days in the MSCEs and the three groups of formation resulting from it make, difficult the accompaniment by the PC, as well as the accompaniment of classrooms and the pedagogical activities in general and the analysis and orientation of teachers' planning and times of exchange among teachers working with the same class. It is considered that these implications can compromise the formative process, whose objective should be to enable the transformation of pedagogical actions so that become better and better. It was suggested the elaboration of proposals that promote moments of collective work less fragmented and with more integrated participation for the discussion and elaboration of the planning / O objetivo deste trabalho foi analisar as implicações dos descompassos das jornadas de trabalho nas ações formativas do Coordenador Pedagógico nas Escolas Municipais de Educação Infantil (EMEIs) de São Paulo.
