Critical analysis of the contribution of smallholder dairy farming to the livelihoods of households: The case of Nharira, Zimbabwe

Kabiti, Hlekani Muchazotida 18 September 2017 (has links)
PhDRDV / Institute for Rural Development / As has been the case in Eastern and Southern Africa, Zimbabwe continues to regard smallholder dairy farming as a viable strategy for reducing poverty and malnutrition, especially in rural areas. Although the country has since the early 1980s been promoting smallholder dairy development, available literature does not provide a clear picture of the extent to which the specific livelihoods of rural communities in terms of human, social, physical and financial capitals, have improved. Nor is there knowledge on its negative contribution to the farmers’ livelihoods. Thus, this study was undertaken to critically analyse the contribution of smallholder dairy farming towards the livelihoods of rural households using the Nharira dairy scheme as a focal area. The DfiD sustainable livelihood framework was used to build this understanding. Apart from characterizing the farmers, the contribution of smallholder dairy farming towards social, physical, human, natural and financial capitals was investigated. A sequentially integrated mixed methods approach was used. This was divided into two phases, which were quantitative and qualitative in nature. Results from the first phase were used to inform and design the second study. A census of the 21 active smallholder dairy farmers in Nharira, and management committee of the Nharira dairy processing plant was conducted. A household-focused questionnaire, key informant interviews, participatory mapping, record review, Global Positioning System (GPS) locating and focus group discussions were used to collect data. A tape recorder, GPS locator and camera were used as assistive devices during data collection. Thematic content analysis was used to analyse qualitative data and interpret participatory maps. Livelihood capital indices were derived per household and used to complement descriptive statistics as part of quantitative data analysis. A social capital index was computed for each household using collective action, empowerment, groups and networks, and trust and solidarity as its components. Resource stocks and access were the building blocks of the natural capital index. Income, savings and investments, and access to funding were used to derive the household financial capital index. Contribution of dairy farming to productive equipment (such as cattle herd size) and basic infrastructure (such as quality of housing) were used to calculate the physical capital index. The index for human capital was obtained taking into account education, workforce and employment, enabling environment, and health and wellness. Equal weights were applied to the components when deriving the household livelihood indices because each one of them was considered to be substantially important for sustainable livelihoods. The quantitative data were stored and analysed using the International Business Machines (IBM) Statistical iii Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 24. Pearson correlation coefficients, means and standard deviations were calculated. Most of the farmers (65 %) were female. Approximately, 95 % of the women farmers were literate. Only 1 % of the farmers were youth (< 35 years old), a situation that threatened the sustainability of smallholder dairy farming. A daily smallholder dairy farming routine was derived using the focus group and participatory mapping results. This showcased the various daily activities and linked them with the household members actively involved. Smallholder dairy farming was found to be labour intensive. This might deter the farmers from diversifying into other livelihood strategies. Smallholder dairy farming was observed to have strengthened financial, human, natural, physical and social capitals in the local households. However, the respective indices of 0.59 and 0.52 for social and natural capitals, suggested that smallholder dairy farming impacted on these more than any other. Even though social capital was strong, further reinforcement through improved smallholder dairy farming activities was still vital because of its power of enhancing access to other forms of livelihood capitals. Human and physical capitals had the least index scores of 0.48 and 0.47, respectively. On average, the overall household livelihood capital index as a result of smallholder dairy farming was 0.51. One of the study respondents supported the positive contribution in the following way, ‘’Zvakanakira dairy hatingazipedzi. Tinotoda zuva rese” (There are many positive things that we attribute to our involvement in smallholder dairy farming. Narrating these demands considerable time). It was concluded that smallholder dairy farming significantly strengthened livelihood capitals of households involved in it. The results of the current study suggest that smallholder dairy farming is a viable option for improving household livelihood capitals. Thus, establishment of dairy farming schemes in rural areas should be promoted. However, the participation of youth in smallholder dairy farming as enterprise owners deserves attention because it threatens sustainability of the sector. An integrated multiple angle view encompassing technical, social, institutional, economic and organizational ideas of the impact of dairy farming as a livelihood strategy on household capital portfolio was provided. Moreover, application of the sustainable development framework to understanding the smallholder dairy farming context at household level was a novel way of understanding the local realities. Lastly, a set of variables that can be utilised to measure livelihood capitals of households involved in smallholder dairy farming-related activities was distilled.

Critical (Re)approach to higher education admission policy: The impact of open enrollment policy implementation

Lawrence, ShirDonna Yvonne 09 December 2022 (has links)
Federal and state policies affecting higher education, like the Morrill Land Grant Act of 1832, Brown vs. Board of Education, and Higher Education Act of 1965 have posited change regarding the proliferation of diversity and expansion of access (Thelin, 2011). I analyzed BOT policies for enrollment and conducted a socio-diagnostic CDA on the implementation of admission policy to understand the impact of the policies’ implementation. I focused on 1) exploring how open enrollment (OE) policies were constructed, 2) how institutions adopt and interpret these policies, and 3) how individuals at the institution enact these policies, by conducting a discourse-historical analysis (DHA). Open enrollment has been extensively studied at junior colleges. However, the impact of open admissions (OA) at 4-year institutions has not been intensely engaged despite its use at these types of institutions. This has left professionals to draw implications for practice from universities and colleges that are different than the ones in which they work. There are conditions that could inhibit the effectiveness of education policy implementation to include: “a lack of focus on the implementation processes when defining policies at the system level; a lack of recognition that the core of change processes require engaging people; and the fact that implementation processes need to be revised to adapt to new complex governance systems” (Viennet & Pont, 2017, p. 6). I conducted a case study investigation of open enrollment policy at a 4-year public university to understand its implementation and impact on the student experience. I used discourse-historical analysis to guide my analysis of the data. Implications were creation of a student profile, resource support matrix, and rethink of policy implementation.

A critical analysis of law and policy on the education of disabled children in South Africa

Tesemma, Shimelis Tsegaye 11 1900 (has links)
From the literature we learn that existing educational frameworks that inform law and policy- making on the education of disabled children deal extensively with the curricular and educational concerns of disabled children. Yet, these frameworks leave out the pivotal issue of children‟s human right to education. The rights-based frameworks address human rights issues in a grand fashion, but give scanty educational guidelines on the actual education of disabled children, rendering hollow the human rights credo they espouse. South Africa has been one of a few countries which made attempts at addressing both the human rights concerns facing learners with disabilities and their curricular and pedagogic needs. The country embarked upon extensive efforts of legislative and policy formulation that are, in some respects, unparalleled in the world. Hence, this country is a potential storehouse of good practices on the education of children with disabilities with the potential to inform the re-formulation of existing African and global frameworks on the right to education of disabled children. Furthermore, the impressive novelty contained in South African education laws and policies notwithstanding, there are a number of issues which should be addressed in the country‟s education environment, including how the laws and policies are implemented. It is to be acknowledged that laws and policies are only as good as their implementation. Mindful of the above situation prevailing at the global level and the national (South African) level, this study offers a framework that marries the right to education of children with disabilities with educational theory on and practice in regard to the education of disabled children. The framework is constructed on the basis of current international literature on both disability and education and related South African law and policy instruments. In terms of its methodology, the study employed a generic or non-categorical qualitative design, also called methodological bricolage. Under this overall design, two principal modes of inquiry were applied, namely the enlightenment mode to policy analysis and critical law and policy discourse analysis. Theoretically, the study is anchored in the human rights variant of the Social Model of Disability, Critical Theory and Post-structural paradigms. / Educational Leadership and Management / D. Ed. A metáfora e sua função persuasiva em artigos de opinião sob a perspectiva da lingüística sistêmico-funcional / The metaphor and its persuasive function in opinion articles from the systemic-functional linguistics perspective

Vieira, Wander Marques 09 May 2008 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 Wander Marques Vieira.pdf: 365765 bytes, checksum: c55c0e41b245a722c00a793495aa131c (MD5) Previous issue date: 2008-05-09 / Secretaria da Educação do Estado de São Paulo / Opinion articles have an important symbolic function of, seemingly, sharing the paper s opinion by covertly bolstering up the assertion that the other sections, conversely, are pure facts or reports . Once signed, they not necessarily represent the paper ideological stance (O Estado de São Paulo); however, Kitis & Miliapes (1996) claim that by being in it, they allow the readership to invest them with the same authority and reliability ascribed to the newspaper. In so being, we can use for the opinion article the very same Fowler s words (1991), when he claims that what distinguishes an editorial is not the expression of values and beliefs, but the textual strategies being used to stand out the speech acts of values and beliefs . This work analyses Gaudêncio Torquato s articles, published on a weekly basis, in O Estado de São Paulo, from the viewpoint of the Critical Linguistics , which proposes that analysis using appropriate linguistic tools, and referring to relevant historical and social contexts, can bring ideology, normally hidden through habitualization of discourse, to surface for inspection , Fowler (1991: 89). While the focus of the traditional analysis discourse is on the meanings established between sentences and utterances, in CDA the focus is on the selections which are made in constructing texts, on factors that constrain and determine these selections, and on their effect. According to Charteris-Black (2004), metaphor is one of these conscious linguistic choices that conceals underlying social processes, and metaphor analysis can aid in the identification of implicit textual content, and metaphor constitutes verbal evidence for an underlying system of ideas or ideology . Kress & Hodge (1993: 15) propose that ideology involves a systematically organized presentation of reality . With this is mind, the authors claim that metaphor is vital in creating such a presentation of reality. Stemming from a corpus of five opinion articles, the aim of this research is, by means of a metaphor-based study, to understand the functioning of this linguistic resource. It is through metaphor that the author expresses his attitudinal position on x the country s political developments, and manages at the same time to directly avoid threatening the face of the people involved, send out his message and persuade his readership. In my analysis, I resort basically to the Systemic-Functional Linguistics (Halliday, 1985; 1994), and its contributors, the Relevance Theory (Sperber & Wilson (1986; 1995), the Goatly s notions (1997) and the developments the theories have been receiving. According to Eggins (1994), what differentiates the SFL is that it seeks to develop a theory of language as a social process and a methodology which allows detailed and systematic description of linguistic patterns. The SFL is considered the more suitable theory-methodological approach to Critical Discourse Analysis (Fowler, 1991); Fairclough, 1992).

Marketdata research institute estimates that the world market of self-help books generated about US$8.5 billions in 2003. They reckon the total size of this market can reach more than US$11 billions in 2008. We can note that the self in self-help, as well as the self in self-learning, means learning without being followed by a teacher. It does not mean self-help, but that one can help him or herself with the help of a book, written by someone else. There is a writer passing their ideas on to a reader, hoping they will be accepted. Thus, the question is: how can a self-help book writer convince their reader of the validity of their statements? Persuasion, mainly implicit persuasion, is not always realized by clearly persuasive adjectives and adverbs, but also by certain lexico-grammatical choices which, in specific contexts, make a text extremely persuasive. This kind of persuasion takes place gradually throughout the text and may be extremelly efficient. Considering the undeniable success of these books, I found it justifiable to develop a study about the self-help text, analyzing it according to the point of view of the discourse, focusing on how the writer transmits his idea in order to get the reader s adhesion. To do so, I will use the critical discourse analysis which, by studying the social and historical situation of a text, aims at bringing to the readers knowledge the patterns of values and beliefs codified in the language invisible for those who take discourse as natural . I hope to analyze the lexico-grammatical choices made by the writer in order to persuade, explicitelly or implicitelly, the reader in the self-help books. For this, I will use Halliday s (1994) systemic-functional linguistics, specially the simultaneous action of the ideational, interpersonal and textual metafunctions, and also some recent contributions in terms of the writer s positioning towards the text and content evaluation. So, I will use, specially, in Martin (2000; 2003), that, with the token nocion value, frame (Goatly 1997; Bednarek 2005); in crypto-argumentacion (Kitis e Milapídes, 1996); textual world (Downing, 2003) and Semino (1997) / Os livros de auto-ajuda constituem um dos segmentos com maior crescimento e é também o responsável pelos novos best-sellers do mercado.

Os recursos persuasivos no editorial de jornal sob a perspectiva da lingüística sistêmico-funcional / The persuasive resources in the newspaper editorial under the perspective of systemic functional linguistics

Oda, Ivone Hiromi 23 June 2008 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 Ivone Hiromi Oda.pdf: 566253 bytes, checksum: 264fe70c61b800e4a6a973d84c551540 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2008-06-23 / The present study is a social semiotic account of a newspaper editorial, which draws on both Halliday s (1985, 1994) Systemic Functional Linguistics and Fairclough s Critical Discourse Analysis. Of particular interest is the persuasion explicit or implicit present in an editorial from the Brazilian newspaper Folha de S.Paulo. The aim of a critical linguistic analysis of a text is to unfold the meanings hidden in its lexical, semantic, syntactic structures as they gradually mediate the general meaning, and to observe how these meanings help to build its ideological content. As Fairclough (1989: 1) states, consciousness is the first step towards emancipation ; he also notes how differences in style or textual strategies in these texts suggest a voice , characteristic of the newspaper in which they are published. What distinguishes the editorial is not the values-and-beliefs offered, but the use of textual strategies that accentuates the act of speech of values-and-beliefs offered, he adds. There are always different ways to say the same thing, and these ways are not accidental alternatives: differences in expression bring ideological distinctions and so bring differences in representation. Thus, I examine an editorial taking into account the pragmatic dimension of this genre, which involves the notion of frame, as a framework that contains the question of intertext in itself, and therefore the notions of reported speech; of crypt-argumentation or secret argumentation; and of footing. The latter heralds the author´s position through the concept of appraisal, which involves the notion of tokens of attitude. The analysis, having these theoretical supports as background, will apply the proposal of fallacies and enthymemes in argumentation, by Lauerbach (2007) and by Toulmin (1958) respectively. And, based on evaluative dimensions by Lemke (1998), I will check (a) the linguistic nature of evaluation within such text; (b) the lexico-grammatical items that express this evaluation; and (c) how (a) and (b) concur for construing the editorial argumentations and, in last instance, for building discourse persuasion within this text / O presente estudo, de caráter semiótico-social, na esteira da Lingüística Sistêmico- Funcional de Halliday (1985, 1994) e seus colaboradores, enfoca o gênero editorial jornalístico no jornal Folha de S.Paulo, do ponto de vista da análise crítica do discurso, examinando a persuasão explícita e implícita presentes na interação através da escrita.

It was the study of the opening address of the South African leader, Nelson Mandela Rolihlahla, pronounced in the occasion of his entrance into the office as President of South Africa on 10 May 1994 in the city of Johannesburg, capital of that country. The speech was sharp in English language, but for the analysis, we used the Portuguese translation, interpreting the ideological occurrences in it. The option for this speech was because we believe it has been a landmark of changes in the history of that country. The approach of the Metaphor in Use assumes that even the metaphor is a figure of thought, which is conceptual. It manifests itself in scope of language in use, and it is from the discursive context that it can most be understood. This dissertation, therefore, fits into the approach of Metaphor in Use and in the Theory of Conceptual Metaphor. First, for analyzing the pragmatic meaning of metaphors, that is, its meaning within the specific socio-historical context, and secondly for appraising the reality by meaning of metaphors. Considering these theoretical tools and counting on the methodology of Critical Analysis of Metaphor, this dissertation aims to identify the metaphors that have the sense of carrying the ideology of Mandela and that expresses criticism of his predecessors in power in a polish way, while safeguarding the identities of those involved in the discourse. Both analyses had been in such a way carried through leaving for the identification of metaphorical expressions, thus indicating the types of metaphors identified and, finally, given by whom, where and for whom the speech was pronounced, seeking its pragmatic sense. The results have shown that Mandela, making use of linguistic and conceptual metaphors, first, expressed his pacifist ideology, showing still, that it is fruit of a long way and, secondly, criticized his predecessors in power, without causing harm, that is, the metaphors in this discourse had also had a role to disarm the aggression / Esta dissertação de mestrado refere-se à pesquisa, sob a perspectiva crítica e pragmática, das metáforas conceptuais e lingüísticas que tenham o sentido de portadora de ideologia e de estratégia de polidez num discurso político.

Its General Purpose it to contribute with the study of the different roles in different Brazilian social and cultural groups, and its Specific Purposes are: to identify the different social roles forming the social structure of our northeastern country man ( sertanejo ); to examine how such roles function, focusing the interaction of the northeastern country man with other social groups; and to recognize the cultural and ideological values contained in the representation of the different social roles examined. It is justified that the frequent evaluations of Brazilian education evidence the inefficiency of public schools in the teaching-learning process, the solutions commonly presented being given by professionals who are out of school and, thus, the classroom context and the student profile are not considered. The setting point of the investigation was to know the different social representations, which are kinds of knowledge stored in the students long term memory, by means of a questionnaire to characterize them and to choose one of their favorite songs. The hypothesis guiding the research results from the dialect between the social and the individual aspects, and the methodological proceeding was the theoreticalanalytical one, which enabled the analysis of the base-text, taking into consideration the categories Society, Cognition and Speech, being supported by internal texts. The results obtained evidence that: 1) the base-text brings Renato Russo s complaint against social injustice and oppression in the lower classes resulting from northeastern migration; 2) the big city is represented by different social groups, each one with specific social roles determined by the Power ideology; 3) the Power is established by the economic power, which reorganizes the other social hierarchies, present in the representations of the social cognition signs, intra, inter and extra group. In conclusion, the citizenship is not attributed to all Brazilian citizens, since lower classes are subject to the State, although the State is not responsible for them / Dissertação situada na Análise Critica do Discurso, em interdisciplinaridade com a Linguística de Texto, a Teoria das Representações Sociais e a Teoria da Enunciação.

Critical analysis of the technological route adopted for development of faulted circuit indicator equipment for aerial power distribution network.

Andrade, Fábio José de 20 April 2012 (has links)
Within the R&D program governed by the National Agency of Electric Energy of Brazil, a luminous faulted circuit indicator equipment (FCI) was developed by the Companhia Paulista de Força e Luz (CPFL) in partnership with the Escola Politécnica da USP and the company Expertise Engenharia Ltda. In this work it is presented a critical analysis of the technological route adopted for development of this new FCI, indicating details and justifications of technological choices adopted, and new detected possibilities for improvements, taken into account the technological advances in recent years. For such purpose, it is proposed a new method, associated to a practical systematization, for comparative analysis of technologies that accounts for quantitative, qualitative and strategic data directly comparable. The work presents analyses on the choices of fault detection principles and related functions, the development of integrated circuits and fault detector electronics, the power supply, the luminous signaling and the equipment case. As results of the research and development of the FCI there were obtained proof of concept, prototype and pilot equipments, the last ones certified and ready for sale. There were also obtained several publications in national conferences, submission of two patent applications and a software for optimization of FCIs allocation on overhead power distribution networks.
