Natural language processing in cross-media analysis

A cross-media analysis framework is an integrated multi-modal platform where a media resource containing different types of data such as text, images, audio and video is analyzed with metadata extractors, working jointly to contextualize the media resource. It generally provides cross-media analysis and automatic annotation, metadata publication and storage, searches and recommendation services. For on-line content providers, such services allow them to semantically enhance a media resource with the extracted metadata representing the hidden meanings and make it more efficiently searchable. Within the architecture of such frameworks, Natural Language Processing (NLP) infrastructures cover a substantial part. The NLP infrastructures include text analysis components such as a parser, named entity extraction and linking, sentiment analysis and automatic speech recognition. Since NLP tools and techniques are originally designed to operate in isolation, integrating them in cross-media frameworks and analyzing textual data extracted from multimedia sources is very challenging. Especially, the text extracted from audio-visual content lack linguistic features that potentially provide important clues for text analysis components. Thus, there is a need to develop various techniques to meet the requirements and design principles of the frameworks. In our thesis, we explore developing various methods and models satisfying text and speech analysis requirements posed by cross-media analysis frameworks. The developed methods allow the frameworks to extract linguistic knowledge of various types and predict various information such as sentiment and competence. We also attempt to enhance the multilingualism of the frameworks by designing an analysis pipeline that includes speech recognition, transliteration and named entity recognition for Amharic, that also enables the accessibility of Amharic contents on the web more efficiently. The method can potentially be extended to support other under-resourced languages.

Creating Strong Cross Media Concepts for Museum Exhibitions

In this paper I argue that, in an effort to create novel cross media exhibition concepts, museums should use service design. By realigning their organizations and embrace the fact that what they are offering is indeed a service, they can gain a new outlook and generate new ideas about how to create novel cross media exhibition concepts. I also suggest that treating the exhibition in a similar way that film studios treat franchises could help shift the mindset and make it cross media-centric. In order to arrive at these conclusions I performed an observational study and conducted qualitative interviews with museum professionals working in various museums in Sweden. The observational study was designed to get a grasp of the current state of digital artefacts in Swedish museums whereas the interviews were aimed towards identifying attitudes as well as knowledge of current opportunities and obstacles. The observational study taught me that instances of rich, meaningful interactions with ties to an overall concept was not common, and that there is definitely opportunities to think differently about delivering these types of distributed user experiences. The interviews gave me a greater understanding of the intricacies of the field of cultural preservation and museums, as well as insight into some of the reasons why things are the way they currently are. Using service design to align these organizations could perhaps aid with some of these reasons.

網際網路與基督教傳播機構的跨媒體結合--從整合行銷傳播的角度探討

摘 要 本研究深入探討基督教傳播機構與網際網路的跨媒體結合對於整合行銷傳播觀念的實施所產生之影響;並透過實務上的詳實觀察,以期對整合行銷傳播之中樞「消費者資料庫」在基督教傳播機構上的應用情形,做一系統性之整理與分析,以作為宗教傳播機構與相關研究的參考。由於國內尚未有從整合行銷傳播的角度對跨媒體個案進行探討之相關研究,因此本研究透過個案研究的方式,選擇了與網際網路進行跨媒體結合的「佳音電台」和「宇宙光」為個案研究對象。 新傳播科技的快速發展,使得傳播媒體間的界線愈趨模糊,跨媒體的現象日趨普遍,特別是網際網路發展以來,各行各業紛紛上網,傳播界也沒有在這一熱潮中缺席,跨媒體結合的情況相當普遍。此外,整合行銷傳播是九0年代的新行銷觀念,其相當重要的一個核心特點為顧客導向行銷,這意味著行銷的核心是直接面對消費者。未來單向溝通的方式已無法有效地影響消費者,取而代之的是雙向的溝通型態,而建立雙向關係溝通系統最成功的方式,是經由建立顧客資料庫以及資料庫行銷活動。 在網際網路以及整合行銷傳播來臨的新時代□,傳播機構如何運用網際網路的特性建立一完整的資料庫,以達成整合行銷傳播的效果是一個值得探討的議題。 在上述主要關注焦點下,本研究之研究問題有以下幾個層面: 一、 台灣基督教傳播機構與網際網路進行跨媒體結合的現況? 二、 基督教傳播機構其整合行銷傳播之中樞—「消費者資料庫」的建立情形為何? 三、 基督教傳播機構與網際網路的結合對於整合行銷傳播實施之影響? 研究結論如下: 結論壹:基督教傳播機構「佳音電台」、「宇宙光」在與網路進行跨媒體結合的現象中,現階段是屬於傳媒共棲形式中的第二種「內容寄存」的形式,也就是各傳媒的生存空間出現重疊的現象,產生一種傳媒的內容「寄存」於另一種傳媒之中。 結論一:佳音電台是在1998年10月上網,宇宙光是在1994年上網,兩者的網站都架設在美國,且籌備時間都相當的短。 結論二:佳音電台和宇宙光在籌備過程中,同樣的困難是人力及經費上的不足,其次,由美國到台灣這一段的傳送上有一些限制,這些是共同遭遇的問題。 結論三:佳音電台和宇宙光的定位基本上皆沒有因採用網路而改變,目前佳音電台整體的定位是扮演都會人「心靈守護者」的角色;而宇宙光的主要定位是「全人關懷」。 結論四:在網路內容的安排上,佳音電台和宇宙光目前仍以原有的內容為主。 結論五:採用網路之後,基本的目標閱聽眾設定沒有改變,但是加入網路族群後範圍變廣了,亦即年齡層降低、且含括台灣地區以外的華人。 結論六:佳音電台和宇宙光都認為所謂的競爭優勢目前很難去評。至於網路所帶來的影響,佳音電台認為可以突破社區電台的侷限性,且網路上的資訊可以共享。宇宙光則認為網路提供了一個便利的管道,突破時間的限制。 結論貳:根據Yarbrough(1996)分析資料庫行銷規劃的三個層次:Customer/Prospect mailing list、Relational Database、Profiling/Tracking tools,宇宙光與佳音電台舊資料庫是屬於第一種Customer/Prospect mailing list。但宇宙光和佳音電台希望更新完畢的資料庫,能夠發展出針對特定消費者作一對一互動溝通的行銷策略(Profiling/Tracking Tools),真正了解消費者心中的需求,提供閱聽眾更多、更細緻的服務。 結論一:佳音電台和宇宙光所設置的資料庫均分為兩種,一種是一般的資料庫,另一種是針對網友資料作蒐集的資料庫。 結論二:佳音電台和宇宙光資料庫來源的取得,在一般管道上,透過「聽眾俱樂部」、社區的志工團體、讀者回函卡以及聽友來信來獲取相關資訊;在網際網路部分,則是透過ICQ、E-mail ,以及網路促銷活動等方式。 結論三:對佳音電台來說,建立資料庫的經費不足是其困難,此外,蒐集回來的資料其正確性、真實性也是問題之一。宇宙光最大的問題在於和不同部門的溝通,此外,軟體技術也需要突破。 結論四:佳音電台和宇宙光都透過搜尋引擎的登記,利用既有的媒體刊登網址和廣告,也透過超連結的方式增加網站被注意的機會;此外,佳音電台透過上網記者會、透過其他的媒體刊登廣告。宇宙光則是透過贈品、網路小卡以及名人策略吸引人上網。 結論參:佳音電台和宇宙光在Duncan(1993)歸納出的整合行銷傳播內容特性四層次(1.形象統一、2.訊息一致、3.良好的傾聽者、4.世界公民)中,是屬於第一、第二層次,也就是「形象統一」、「訊息一致」;在第三層次「良好的傾聽者」部分,目前佳音電台和宇宙光運用資料庫鼓勵閱聽眾和機構保持聯繫,以期獲得極大化回饋,這個部分做得比較少。至於第四層次「世界公民」,佳音電台和宇宙光在整體的定位上就是朝著這個方向去做,目前是否達成了很難去評估,但是會朝著這個目標和方向去努力。 此外,佳音電台和宇宙光都認為運用整合行銷傳播觀念進行整合或策略聯盟是非常重要的,然而如何在整合中維持機構的理念和公益性是一大問題。 宇宙光認為在進行策略聯盟,尤其與商業經營機構、組織進行策略聯盟時會有一些掙扎,實際進行時無法不受影響,總會有一些妥協,每一次很想要做,但是最後一剎那總是沒有邁出去。如何在適應、改變當中,保有自己最初的、完整的理念是一大困難。 由於佳音電台進行策略聯盟的對象是以基督教的機構、團體為主,例如:希望之聲、信望愛、Good TV、華神…等,其基本的理念和目標是一致的,所以在進行整合時比較沒有太大的困難。 結論一:對於整合行銷傳播的認知,佳音電台和宇宙光不同部門與職務的人持不同的看法,大體上來說佳音電台的公關部門和宇宙光的業務部門對這個概念是比較清楚的,其他部門或管理階層的人對於整合行銷傳播的概念還是有些模糊。 結論二:無論是佳音電台或是宇宙光的管理階層對於整合行銷傳播的實施皆採取相當支持的態度。 結論三:佳音電台和宇宙光目前運用資料庫之資訊與閱聽眾進行的互動比較少,但期待建立消費者資料庫之後,可以針對不同的對象做比較深入、細緻的服務。 結論四:佳音電台透過現場即時廣播的方式,可以和散佈世界各地的聽友在同一個時間內進行互動,此外,透過ICQ可以與網友進行即時、一對一的互動;宇宙光目前運用網路進行一對一的互動做得比較少。 結論五:佳音電台和宇宙光都認為網際網路是一個便捷的管道能讓聽眾很快的回饋,世界各地的網友都可以透過網路和其取得聯繫。 結論六:佳音電台和宇宙光都認為資料庫中閱聽眾的資訊是行銷策略形成的重要決定因素。 結論七:佳音電台和宇宙光未來都會善用各種資源和管道與閱聽眾建立持續地、互動地關係,其次,除了內部的整合外,也都希望能拓展對外的整合,透過整合傳播的概念來做策略聯盟。另外,在網路內容上,將繼續豐富網路的內容、增加其多樣性,並且特別針對網路的需要做一些設計,跳脫目前的一些內容。

粉絲與名人如何透過不同媒體進行類社會互動與後續效果研究 / Compare the level of parasocial interaction between fans and celebrities and follow up effects caused by television and online social media

本研究是為了比較電視媒體和網路社交媒體在名人與粉絲間的類社會互動程度與後續情感及行為效果上是否有差異。藉由蒐集314份網路問卷,以類社會互動程度為自變項、情感效果與行為效果為應變項,分別比較這兩種媒體。研究結果顯示:第一、不同媒介在引發粉絲對名人的類社會互動上的確存在差異,且以電視的影響力較大。第二、在類社會互動程度引發的情感、行為反應方面,電視都顯著地高於網路社群。第三、整體來說類社會互動程度在預測網路社群上的情感、行為反應是有效的預測變數,與過去電視媒體的文獻結果一致。此外,本研究也發展出粉絲類型量表,以量化的方式將粉絲依照對名人的感興趣程度分成低、中、高三類。進一步將三類粉絲分開檢視,發現粉絲類型確實會調節類社會互動程度與情感、行為效果。 / This research was done to study the relationship between the level of fans’ parasocial interaction and the effects caused by television and online social media. This study collected 314 online questionnaires. The independent variable was the level of parasocial interaction and the dependent variables were affective effects and behavioral effects, including the importance of celebrities, emotions of celebrities’ disappearance, activity, and adaption.The findings of this study indicate that television produced significantly greater influence on the level of parasocial interaction toward celebrities than online social media.Furthermore, the affective effects and behavioral effects caused by parasocial interaction from TV are more significant than the result from social media. Generally speaking, the level of parasocial interaction effectively predicts fans’ affective and behavioral in the context of online social media, which is consistent with the result found in the past television studies. Besides, this study developed a fan scale to classify fans into three levels, including low-interest fans, moderate-interest fans, and high-interest fans. The result reveals that the level of fans can moderate the effects of the level of parasocial interaction, affective effects, and behavioral effects of television and online social media.

I processi di digitalizzazione e convergenza hanno avuto un forte impatto sulle modalità di produzione, distribuzione e fruizione dei contenuti audiovisivi. Ma tale impatto non si è limitato ai suddetti ambiti. Fenomeni come il transmedia storytelling, le narrazioni distribuite, l’intertestualità, l’ibridazione delle forme discorsive, l’integrazione di elementi di game-playing all’interno di strutture narrative tradizionalmente lineari, e la crescente rilevanza del world-building all’interno del processo creativo di una storia dimostrano che il cambio di paradigma non sta avvenendo solo a livello delle strutture economiche, produttive e comunicative, ma anche a livello narratologico. Scopo di questa ricerca è mappare tale cambio di paradigma, approfondendo in modo particolare l’emergere delle forme narrative transmediali. / The processes of digitalization and media convergence have had a major impact on the procedures of production, distribution and reception of audiovisual content. However, the impact has not been limited to those areas. The emergence of cultural phenomena such as transmedia storytelling, distributed narratives, intertextuality, the hybridization of forms of discourse, the integration of elements of game-playing within the traditionally linear narrative structures, and the growing importance of world-building within the story development process attest that the paradigm shift is not only occurring at an economical, industrial and communicational level, but also at a narratological one. The aim of this research is to map this paradigm shift, with particular focus on the emergence of transmedia narrative forms.

基於圖像資訊之音樂資訊檢索研究 / A study of image-based music information retrieval

以往的音樂資訊檢索方法多使用歌詞、曲風、演奏的樂器或一段音頻訊號來當作查詢的媒介,然而,在某些情況下,使用者沒有辦法清楚描述他們想要尋找的歌曲,如:情境式的音樂檢索。本論文提出了一種基於圖像的情境式音樂資訊檢索方法,可以透過輸入圖片來找尋相應的音樂。此方法中我們使用了卷積神經網絡(Convolutional Neural Network)技術來處理圖片,將其轉為低維度的表示法。為了將異質性的多媒體訊息映射到同一個向量空間,資訊網路表示法學習(Network Embedding)技術也被使用,如此一來,可以使用距離計算找回和輸入圖片有關的多媒體訊息。我們相信這樣的方法可以改善異質性資訊間的隔閡(Heterogeneous Gap),也就是指不同種類的多媒體檔案之間無法互相轉換或詮釋。在實驗與評估方面,首先利用從歌詞與歌名得到的關鍵字來搜尋大量圖片當作訓練資料集,接著實作提出的檢索方法,並針對實驗結果做評估。除了對此方法的有效性做測試外,使用者的回饋也顯示此檢索方法和其他方法相比是有效的。同時我們也實作了一個網路原型,使用者可以上傳圖片並得到檢索後的歌曲,實際的使用案例也將在本論文中被展示與介紹。 / Listening to music is indispensable to everyone. Music information retrieval systems help users find their favorite music. A common scenario of music information retrieval systems is to search songs based on user's query. Most existing methods use descriptions (e.g., genre, instrument and lyric) or audio signal of music as the query; then the songs related to the query will be retrieved. The limitation of this scenario is that users might be difficult to describe what they really want to search for. In this paper, we propose a novel method, called ``image2song,'' which allows users to input an image to retrieve the related songs. The proposed method consists of three modules: convolutional neural network (CNN) module, network embedding module, and similarity calculation module. For the processing of the images, in our work the CNN is adopted to learn the representations for images. To map each entity (e.g., image, song, and keyword) into a same embedding space, the heterogeneous representation is learned by network embedding algorithm from the information graph. This method is flexible because it is easy to join other types of multimedia data into the information graph. In similarity calculation module, the Euclidean distance and cosine distance is used as our criterion to compare the similarity. Then we can retrieve the most relevant songs according to the similarity calculation. The experimental results show that the proposed method has a good performance. Furthermore, we also build an online image-based music information retrieval prototype system, which can showcase some examples of our experiments.

A detailed english description (three pages) is enclosed in the publication. / Die heutige Menge an textuellen Informationen erfordert vom Interessenten eine adäquate Selektion und Rezeption. Als printmedientechnischer Beitrag zur Lösung dieser Problematik wird das Book-on-Demand- (BoD) Verfahren in Verbindung mit einer individuellen Auswahl von Buchinhalten genutzt. Dazu wird in der vorliegenden Arbeit ein Formalismus entwickelt, der im Rahmen eines BoD-Workflows die kontextspezifische logische Neustrukturierung von Einheiten eines bestehenden elektronischen Buches automatisiert. Als Grundlage dient das aus der Graphentheorie bekannte Modell des minimalen Spannbaums (MSB). Bei der Bildung des MSB werden vor allem die primäre, vom Autor des bestehenden Buches vorgegebene, logische Struktur und eine dem Buch zu Grunde liegende Taxonomie ausgewertet. Für eine prototypische Implementierung des formalen Modells wird eine geeignete Softwarearchitektur für XML-kodierte Bücher entwickelt. Die Bewertung der resultierenden Buchgliederungen wird durch neuartige Metriken für logische Strukturen unterstützt.

The article considers three main aspects of developing mobile learning for serious learning scenarios at universities and further educational training sectors. The first is about getting in touch with mobile learning in general and analysing actual e-learning-systems at the Technische Universität Dresden. The second aspect focuses on micro learning as a potential didactical approach. Having a look on prototyping pitfalls and problems will complete the introduction. For discussing the presented issues concerning technical, didactical, learning and teaching problems there will be a workshop session with three round tables using the worldcafé method.

Célébrité de la téléréalité aux réseaux sociaux : le cas de Jessica Thivenin et les pratiques de self-branding

Ce travail se penche sur les nouvelles formes de célébrité dites micro-célébrité, et plus particulièrement sur les pratiques de self-branding qui se développent dans un contexte néolibéral. Alors que les micro-célébrités, à l’instar des influenceurs, sont communément associées aux médias numériques et à la popularité croissante des réseaux sociaux, je considère que c’est en réalité les candidats de téléréalité qui sont les précurseurs de ces nouvelles pratiques et carrières basées sur la visibilité et l’image. De ce fait, je choisis d'étudier le cas particulier de Jessica Thivenin, candidate de téléréalité de l'émission Les Marseillais (2012–), et influenceuse française. À travers une analyse de contenu cross-média composée de quatre moments-clés, j’observe la manière dont Jessica Thivenin se met (et est mise) en scène afin de se rendre visible en tant que marque. En m’inscrivant dans les études culturelles et visuelles, je mobilise un cadre théorique lié aux travaux de Goffman (1959), avec des concepts tels que la performance, l’impression management et la présentation de soi. Enfin, cette recherche permet de discuter d’enjeux qui gravitent autour de la problématique, comme la représentation, l’image de la téléréalité auprès de l’audience et auprès des chercheurs, ainsi que les bad buzz. / This study investigates new forms of celebrity known as micro-celebrity, and more specifically self-branding practices emerging in a neoliberal context. Even though micro-celebrities, like influencers, are usually linked to digital media and the increasing popularity of social media, I argue that reality television show contestants are, in fact, the pioneers of these new practices and among the first to develop careers based on visibility and image. For this reason, I choose to study the specific case of Jessica Thivenin, contestant from the French reality television show Les Marseillais (2012–), who has become an influencer. Through a cross-media content analysis of four key moments in Thivenin’s self-branding career, I observe how Jessica Thivenin staged herself, and is also staged, in order to make herself visible as a brand. In this analysis grounded in cultural and visual studies, I use a theoretical framework inspired by Goffman’s work (1959), with concepts like performance, impression management and self-presentation. Finally, this research opens a discussion on several concerns such as representation, the image of reality television as seen by the audience and by researchers, as well as bad buzz.
