Evaluation of Environmental Effects of Corporate Mobility as a Service : A case study

May, Carl January 2020 (has links)
In times of progressive urbanization and increased environmental awareness, the mobility sector faces the challenge to satisfy an increasing demand, while simultaneously decreasing the negative externalities of transportation. The emerging concept Mobility as a Service (MaaS) claims to resolve this conflict, by offering individualized and seamless mobility through combination of all available modes. This thesis quantifies the tank to wheel (TTW) greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of a MaaS implementation and simulates effects of potential variations in the service. The pilot under focus is an alteration of MaaS, which is exclusively available to the work force of a specific corporation. This variation is called Corporate Mobility as a Service (CMaaS). The evaluation is based on cross-sectional survey among the employees and operational data from the CMaaS operator. The transport demand model applies a person category approach. The total daily GHG emitted by the work force’s on-site mobility is estimated to 3.735 tCO2. Compared to on-site trips by private cars, trips with CMaaS emit less than half as many GHG emissions per passenger kilometer traveled. This highlights the environmental benefits of MaaS, especially in replacing short trips by private car. Due to the composition of the underlying data sources and the therefore chosen methodology the reactivity to implemented scenarios is very limited. Thus, analysis and interpretation of the results is restricted to largely aggregated levels. Nonetheless, this study offers an initial orientation point for further estimation of TTW GHG emissions by MaaS schemes. Beyond, it highlights the lack in understanding and modelling of corporate mobility in general.

Faktorer som sjuksköterskor skattar som attraktiva för arbetet : En enkätstudie på ortopediska vårdavdelningar

Enohnyaket, Rose, Mahammed, Amina January 2018 (has links)
Background. Shortage of nurses is an alarming problem in Sweden and the world as a whole. To be able to solve this problem it important to identify those factors that according to the nurses can contribute to make their work attractive. Aims. The aim of this study was to describe factors that make work attractive and how these differ from the actual work situation among nurses who work in orthopedic departments. Methods. It was a cross-sectional survey with descriptive and comparative design. Data were collected in orthopedic departments in sex different hospitals in the middle of Sweden using questionnaires. A total of 95 nurses responded. Correlation and regression analyses was used to analyze the data. Main Results. According to the nurses’ factors that were most important for a job to be attractive were leadership, salaries, collaboration (teamwork) and job status. Nurses appreciated their current work situation lower than the attractive work. To feel valuable was the best in the current work situation, while the salary was worst. Comparison of the current work with the attractive work shows significant difference with significant level <0.05 when comparing all factors. The most significant was salary because it had the biggest discrepancy between the current work and the attractive work while the journey to and from work had the least discrepancy. Conclusions. According to the results of the analyses good leadership, high salaries, good collaboration (teamwork) and good job status are of great importance when considering strategies to retain nurses. Nurses appreciated their current work situation lower than the attractive work with salaries being worst. This implies that one strategy that could improve the current working situation may be an increase in salaries.

Inference for Discrete Time Stochastic Processes using Aggregated Survey Data

Davis, Brett Andrew, Brett.Davis@abs.gov.au January 2003 (has links)
We consider a longitudinal system in which transitions between the states are governed by a discrete time finite state space stochastic process X. Our aim, using aggregated sample survey data of the form typically collected by official statistical agencies, is to undertake model based inference for the underlying process X. We will develop inferential techniques for continuing sample surveys of two distinct types. First, longitudinal surveys in which the same individuals are sampled in each cycle of the survey. Second, cross-sectional surveys which sample the same population in successive cycles but with no attempt to track particular individuals from one cycle to the next. Some of the basic results have appeared in Davis et al (2001) and Davis et al (2002).¶ Longitudinal surveys provide data in the form of transition frequencies between the states of X. In Chapter Two we develop a method for modelling and estimating the one-step transition probabilities in the case where X is a non-homogeneous Markov chain and transition frequencies are observed at unit time intervals. However, due to their expense, longitudinal surveys are typically conducted at widely, and sometimes irregularly, spaced time points. That is, the observable frequencies pertain to multi-step transitions. Continuing to assume the Markov property for X, in Chapter Three, we show that these multi-step transition frequencies can be stochastically interpolated to provide accurate estimates of the one-step transition probabilities of the underlying process. These estimates for a unit time increment can be used to calculate estimates of expected future occupation time, conditional on an individual’s state at initial point of observation, in the different states of X.¶ For reasons of cost, most statistical collections run by official agencies are cross-sectional sample surveys. The data observed from an on-going survey of this type are marginal frequencies in the states of X at a sequence of time points. In Chapter Four we develop a model based technique for estimating the marginal probabilities of X using data of this form. Note that, in contrast to the longitudinal case, the Markov assumption does not simplify inference based on marginal frequencies. The marginal probability estimates enable estimation of future occupation times (in each of the states of X) for an individual of unspecified initial state. However, in the applications of the technique that we discuss (see Sections 4.4 and 4.5) the estimated occupation times will be conditional on both gender and initial age of individuals.¶ The longitudinal data envisaged in Chapter Two is that obtained from the surveillance of the same sample in each cycle of an on-going survey. In practice, to preserve data quality it is necessary to control respondent burden using sample rotation. This is usually achieved using a mechanism known as rotation group sampling. In Chapter Five we consider the particular form of rotation group sampling used by the Australian Bureau of Statistics in their Monthly Labour Force Survey (from which official estimates of labour force participation rates are produced). We show that our approach to estimating the one-step transition probabilities of X from transition frequencies observed at incremental time intervals, developed in Chapter Two, can be modified to deal with data collected under this sample rotation scheme. Furthermore, we show that valid inference is possible even when the Markov property does not hold for the underlying process.

Smoking behaviour, risk perception and attitude to anti-smoking legislation among students at the University of the Western Cape

Popovac, Masa January 2010 (has links)
The study investigated three aspects related to smoking, namely, smoking behaviour, risk perception and attitudes to anti-smoking legislation. The theoretical framework of the study was the Information-Motivation-Behavioural (IMB) skills model. The study was a quantitative one, making use of a cross-sectional survey design to obtain data about the three variables of interest. Responses to statements about risk perception and attitudes to anti-smoking legislation in the questionnaire were arranged on a three-point Likert scale. The inferential statistics used were one-sample ttests and Chi-square analyses. The results showed an overall smoking prevalence of 16%, with twice as many females than males being smokers in the sample. ‘Coloured’ students in both genders had the highest smoking rate compared to all other race groups. The knowledge of the health risks of smoking were very high, however smokers had a lower perception of risk compared to non-smokers. Moreover, while there was a fair amount of support for anti-smoking legislation among smokers, smokers tended to show less support for legislation than non-smokers, especially to those parts of the legislation that affect them more directly. The results of the study indicate a clear connection between smoking behaviour and the effect it has on both risk perception as well as attitudes to anti-smoking legislation in individuals.

Assessment of the Oxbow Morphology of the Caloosahatchee River and its Evolution Over Time: A Case Study in South Florida

Delhomme, Chloe 01 January 2012 (has links)
The Caloosahatchee River, located in Southern Florida, was originally a meandering and relatively shallow river. During the 1920s, the Caloosahatchee River was channelized and became the C-43 canal. The channelization has significantly impacted the river ecosystem, particularly the oxbows. The oxbows are the U-shaped water bodies on each side of the river channel, which are the remnant bends of the original river. To understand how anthropogenic influence affects hydrologic systems, the proposed case study was designed to assess the geomorphic changes of the oxbows of the Caloosahatchee River, Florida. Understanding and documenting the evolution of river morphology is becoming increasingly important today with increasing river degradation due to anthropogenic activities. In fact, such monitoring will provide critical information regarding river conditions to support future management plans and restoration efforts. Monitoring is a key element of successful management. This study provided a baseline for future monitoring by assessing the current morphologic conditions of the thirty-seven oxbows of the Caloosahatchee River, coupled with GPS data. Bathymetric surveys were used to assess the morphology of the oxbows. The study also presented trends in the evolution of oxbow morphology by comparing the data collected from the survey in 2011 with a cross-sectional survey collected by the South Florida Water Management District in 1978. The study revealed that 21 of 37 oxbows are still open; however, 16 are already partially filled, either at one of the ends or somewhere in the interior. In both 1978 and 2011, oxbows in Lee County were significantly larger, wider and deeper than in Hendry County. Exterior limb cross-sections were significantly larger, wider and deeper than interior cross-sections in both 1978 and 2011. Finally, an attempt to determine trends in the evolution of the morphology of the oxbows demonstrated that the overall maximum depth is significantly decreasing but only in the interior of the oxbow and that the mean depth is significantly increasing but only in the exterior cross-sections. This analysis also showed that the width is significantly increasing throughout the oxbow. Factors responsible for such differences may include natural geomorphic processes, pattern changes due to channelization, land use and anthropogenic activities.

Um panorama do tabagismo em 16 capitais brasileiras e Distrito Federal: tendências e heterogeneidades / An overview of smoking in 16 Brazilian state capitals and district Federal: trends and heterogeneities

Valeska Carvalho Figueiredo 25 May 2007 (has links)
This Thesis includes two papers that aim at describing tobacco use trends and heterogeneity in Brazilian regions and capitals. These data, in turn, aim at supporting tobacco control plan and evaluation. Data from two household surveys The Health and Nutrition National Survey (PNSN) and the Non-Communicable Disease and Self-Perceived Domiciliary Survey (InqDANT) - were used in this study. The first papers objective is to estimate the differences in tobacco use prevalence in Brazilian capitals between 1989 and 2002/2003, and their relationships to tobacco control actions during this period. The percentage of current smokers decreased from 30.2% to 19.4% from 1989 to 2002/2003. The prevalence changed from 37.5% to 23.2% (1.1% /year) in men and from 24.3% to 16.5% (0.6 % /year) in women. The timing of the principal public health actions related to smoking suggests that the declines were the result of the combined effects of cigarette package warning labels, tobacco products advertisement restriction and ban, and restriction of environmental tobacco smoke exposure in public places. The decline in smoking prevalence observed in the present study was one of the highest of the world. On the second paper, we described tobacco use in Brazil and its heterogeneity by region and other characteristics. The study included 24.681 participants selected through a multi-stage sampling strategy of individuals 15 years old or older living in 16 capitals and in the Federal District. The prevalence of smoking was greater in men than in women in all cities. The smoking prevalence ranged from 17.0% to 28.2% in men, and from 10% to 22.9% in women. The highest prevalences in women were found in the South and Southeast regions, a pattern that was not observed in men. Regardless of gender, the highest prevalences of smoking were found in those with lower educational levels and those aged 40- 49 years. Cessation average was approximately 50% in both men and women. These results suggest that tobacco control public policies have been effective, particularly with regard to cessation strategies. However, the high smoking prevalence in the young individuals underscores the importance of reinforcing smoking initiation control measures. The heterogeneity observed in this survey highlights the necessity of tailoring control actions to the different regions. In addition to these two study reports, this Thesis also described possible new studies on tobacco use using InqDANT data. Finally, a description is also presented of important research areas to be developed in Brazil aiming at supporting the National Tobacco Control Program and the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.

The dynamics of intimate partner violence during pregnancy and linkages with HIV infection and disclosure in Zimbabwe

Shamu, Simukai January 2013 (has links)
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / The study assessed the linkages between HIV infection and intimate partner violence (IPV) during pregnancy and after HIV status disclosure in a context where HIV testing has become almost mandatory through the provider-initiated counselling and testing approach and non-disclosure of HIV status to sexual partners has been criminalised in many countries including Zimbabwe. The study also explored women’s experiences of and health workers’ perceptions of IPV during pregnancy.
