Vygotsky Circle during the Decade of 1931-1941: Toward an Integrative Science of Mind, Brain, and Education

Yasnitsky, Anton 25 February 2010 (has links)
This dissertation presents a study of the scientific practices of the circle of Vygotsky’s closest collaborators and students during the decade of the 1930s-and including the early 1940s (until Germany’s invasion of the Soviet Union and the beginning of the Great Patriotic War in 1941). The notion of Vygotsky Circle is introduced in this work and is explicitly distinguished from a traditional—yet frequently criticised—notion of “the school of Vygotsky-Leontiev-Luria”. The scientific practices of the Vygotsky Circle are discussed here as the unity of a) social and interpersonal relations, b) the practices of empirical scientific research, and c) discursive practices of the Soviet science—more specifically, the “Stalinist Science” of the 1930s. Thus, this study analyzes the social and interpersonal relations between the members of the Vygotsky Circle and the evolution of this circle in the social context of Soviet science during the decade of 1930s; various practices of empirical scientific research conducted by the members of the Vygotsky Circle were also overviewed. Finally, discursive practices of the Soviet scientific “doublespeak” were discussed and illustrated with several examples borrowed from publications of the time.

Elementary students’ and teacher’s interactions during out-of-classroom activities

de Oliveira Jayme, Bruno 16 July 2008 (has links)
Using interaction analysis and discourse analysis as a method of data analysis, I take a cultural-historical approach to explore teacher-student and student-student interactions during out-of-classroom science projects. The database is composed of my fieldnotes, videotaped science fieldtrips, and videotaped computer sessions where students worked collaboratively to produce science digital videos, highlighting their experiences during science fieldtrips. This thesis is formed by three studies I conducted with elementary students from a public school in British Columbia, Canada. These three independent and yet interrelated studies have implications for science learning and instruction in general. More specifically, this thesis contributes to the understanding of student-student and teacher-student interactions during collaborative work when they are engaged in science activities that occurred out of the classroom settings, such as fieldtrips and in the computer laboratory.

The utilization of assistive technology to enhance educational support for all learners in a mainstream school

Rowlands, Trudi 11 1900 (has links)
This study focused on the use of Assistive Technology (AT) in enhancing the educational support of all learners in a mainstream school. The theoretical frameworks used in this study were Wellness Theory and Cultural Historical Activity Theory (CHAT). The main aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of Assistive Technology in promoting the educational support of all learners in a mainstream school. This use of AT thus benefiting inclusion and inclusive practices and enhancing learning and support for all students in a mainstream school. The study was embedded in an interpretivist paradigm and used a qualitative research approach. Sampling was purposive and participants were selected based on the researcher’s pre-defined purpose for the study. Ethical approval was sought from the University of South Africa and prior to conducting research consent forms were signed by all participants. Data were collected using questionnaires with open-ended questions, face to face interviews and document analysis. Data analysis was done through thematic coding (noting recurring patterns of information) and the development of major themes based on qualitative data collected. Findings revealed the need for more technology in the research site (such as iPads and laptops), as well as the need for staff training in order to effectively use the technology. Furthermore, having more educational assistants to support students with more complex needs was also highlighted. Findings from face-to-face interviews indicated themes articulating with the above mentioned. This included the need for time to plan for the use of Assistive Technology in the classroom, along with time to familiarize oneself with the various forms of technology available. Training to effectively implement and support the technology was highlighted, as was time to engage with other colleagues and develop a collegial enquiry for the effective use of Assistive Technology to support all learners in the mainstream class. Findings from documents reviewed showed significant focus on the need for diagnosis to be able to select intervention strategies for the classroom and instruction. When staff were aware of a child’s medical, cognitive or mental health diagnosis, appropriate supports could be explored. The school support documents reviewed indicated a clear requirement for updated testing and setting of goals for students, to be supported by the strategies. Recommendations made for the effective use of AT included the promotion of professional development in staff and the establishment of professional learning communities which value the sharing and exchange of information regarding knowledge and skills. Furthermore, a framework is proposed which may be used by schools using assistive technology in supporting learners in mainstream schools so that learning may be enhanced. A further longitudinal study was recommended for the future to determine the impact of the use of AT to support inclusion when relevant staff training is available, applicable and ongoing. / Inclusive Education / D. Les instruments psychosociaux de la santé au travail : Le cas des managers de proximité de l’industrie électrique / The psychosocial tools in order to build and maintain health at work : the case of team managers in electric industry

Miossec, Yvon 12 December 2011 (has links)
This thesis is a contribution to the field of psychosocial risks at work. It reports how, in order to respond to the command of an international corporation of electrics industry, we entered the question of psychosocial risk at work, and how we managed to reverse the question. We ‘ve been studying, in a team managers’ group, the psychosocial tools used in order to build and maintain health at work. in the perspective of Clinic of Activity, we know firstly that the development of « power to act » in activity protects and promotes health at work, and secondly that the creation of new goals is a medium of this development. That is why , in this research project, we aimed to understand the creation process of new goals in activity, and we studied this process in a specific frame : in and by the way of dialogues about work activity among professional peers. Discourse analysis permit to identify three different processes, a language process and two psychological ones, that all participate to a renew of goals. Those processes are : 1) a new iteration, in the discourse, of a verbal statement taken from another discourse ; 2) the differentiation of goal’s origins ; and 3) the elaboration of new links between activities. Those issues allows us to define some of the significant properties of dialogue as a tool for health promotion between peers at work.

Využití regionálních dějin Vltavotýnska ve výuce dějepisu. Pracovní učebnice s regionálně dějinnou tematikou / The Use of Regional History of Vltavotynsko in History Lessons. Workbook with Regional Historical Topics

PINTNEROVÁ, Anna January 2013 (has links)
The diploma thesis The Use of Regional History of Vltavotynsko in History Lessons. Workbook with Regional Historical Topics is a contribution to the methodology of history lessons. It defends the importance of regional and environmental education as well as education for relationship to cultural-historical heritage in lessons of history, especially at upper primary schools. The mentioned aspects of history education are observed in particular chosen educational documents, which determined the form of education in the 1990s and then also the final product of this reform - the Framework Educational Programmefor primary education. The main output of the thesis is a textbook about the regional history of Vltavotynsko called People from the River, which reflects the learned knowledge. The textbook does not only contain exercises typical for a workbook, but it also includes other texts and visual materials which present the basic historical development in the micro-region to pupils in an attractive way and they are a valuable contribution to pupil's environmental education, too.

Escrita em língua estrangeira no ensino fundamental I: ensino, aprendizagem e desenvolvimento por meio do texto persuasivo / Writing in foreign language in elementary school: teaching, learning and development through persuasive texts

Lilian de Melo Fernandes Martinelli 13 March 2014 (has links)
The teaching of English as a Foreign Language to Children as well as its research are in expansion not only in Brazil but all over the world (Cameron, 2003; Gimenez 2010). Among the studies in the area of teaching English as a Foreign Language to children there is a lack of researches that evaluate and analyze data that come from interventions in the teaching of writing to literate children aged between 8 and 10 (Figueira, 2010). With the objective of contributing to the Teaching of Writing in English as a Foreign Language to Elementary School Children, this dissertation aims to demonstrate a) how a pedagogical intervention, that was held at a private school in São Paulo, taught the persuasive text and b) to discuss the implications of this teaching to the participants were. In this master research, the researcher and teacher aimed to intervene in the students comprehension of opinion writing in order to provoke the expansion of students comprehension (Daniels, 2011; Magalhães, 2009), as well as to promote their writing improvement. In conformity with Davydov´s learning actions (1988), students answered the problem-question elaborated for the course, formulated representations about the characteristics of persuasion, analyzed biographical and persuasive texts and, in the end of the intervention, wrote persuasive texts about the real inventor of the airplane. The pedagogical intervention had its basis on the Cultural Historical Activity Theory, in conformity with the theories of Vygotsky (2007) and Davydov (1988). For Vygotsky, the intellectual functions of human beings are not mere results of biological maturation, as if they were something natural and innate for all human beings. Instead, the intellectual functions are socially constructed with the fundamental assistance of language. This reveals that higher mental functions derive from social interaction, from social and historical practices. In this sense, cognition emerges not only from biological functioning, but also from the integration of biological and social practice (Vygotsky, 2007). Another theoretical basis used for the intervention was the Australian School of Genre. In this perspective, the textual genre is materialized through language, which is a means through which human beings make meanings in social contexts (Eggins, 2004; Halliday & Matthiessen, 1994; Martin, 2008). In this way, genre can be seen as a tool to build Zone of Proximal Development and expand students knowledge. These goals are connected with the theoretical perspectives adopted since their objective is to promote agency in the field they act upon (Lantolf, 2000, 2007; Spinoza, 1998; Vygotsky, 2007). Analysis of data revealed that the intervention promoted awareness of students in relation to the persuasive function of opinion texts. Moreover, the data analysis showed that students improved their opinion writing in relation to the pre-tests realized before the pedagogical intervention. The conclusion remarks that there is still much to do in the area of writing as a foreign language to children, but children must be sensitized to write opinion texts in primary school (Souza, 2003: 73), since argumentation and persuasion are present in everyday school or family children situations

The starting point consists in a field investigation realized at the IFG, a campus of Goiania, with a mathematics teacher of the technical course of alimentation services of PROEJA. For this, the methodology of the field investigation has to be qualitative. The adopted instruments of the date collection have been questionnaire, semi-structured interviews, direct observation, field-diaries and registries of the classes in video. The theoretic fundament is based on principle works of cultural-historical psychology students and on the activity theory (Vigotski, Leontiev, Davidov and others). The analyzing process of the dates is organized in three categories: "The purpose of pedagogical work", "The organization of pedagogical activity", and "the actions in pedagogical activities". The first category analyzes the professional trajectory of the teacher, focussing the conceptions of mathematics knowledge, the process of teaching and apprenticeship of mathematics and the principal motive of his pedagogical activity. The second category treats the form how the professional organizes the activities of teaching, specifically how he selects determined contents, which are utilized as strategies in the class room and as a model of evaluation of apprenticeship of the pupils. Finally, taking for base this kind of elements, the third category intents to analyze in what measure the pedagogical actions of the mathematics teacher satisfy the necessities and specific needs of the students being in PROEJA. This category as well has the precept to analyse the results of the teaching activities from the perceptions of the teacher himself, in order to understand the sense that he gives to his pedagogical activity, understanding this concept as a dialectic unit between the teaching-activity of apprenticeship. The results indicates the creation of subsidies theories and methodologies which are competent to contribute to possible and necessary processes of teaching organization which attends the conditions of apprenticeship of young students and adult workers, as mayor necessity.

Silva Junior, Bento Selau da 27 March 2013 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2014-08-20T13:48:07Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Bento Selau da Silva Junior_Tese.pdf: 16249436 bytes, checksum: 84ea1994e54232bb233d34e45b2e1140 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-03-27 / This thesis has the objective to describe how a group of blind people explains its graduation in higher education, identifying the factors associated with this conclusion, in the light of L. S. Vygotski s studies. Methodologically, the thesis consisted in a qualitative study, assuming the form of case studies. The research counted on the participation of nine blind people based on the following criteria: being blind and being higher education egresses. The instruments to collect data were the interview and the document analysis. The collected data were worked out through the discursive textual analysis. The theoretical framework brought information pertaining to the participation of blind students in higher education; definition of terms blind and disability; social movements influence on the blind; inclusion of disabled people in higher education; the presence of obstacles for the blind to attend higher education; and the role of professors who work with visually impaired students. It included the presentation of psychological-pedagogical propositions about blindness, arising from investigations developed by Vygotski in the context of his defectology, which resulted in a reorganization of the texts of Tome V of his Collected Works, so that, it would be possible to understand his proposals around the theme.Other concepts of Cultural-Historical theory which were considered as fundamental to this work were also discussed:consciousness, will and subjectivity, besides the terms overcome and overcoming that appear in the author set of defectology. The findings of the research were organized into four emerging categories: Quality of basic education attended , Difficulties found , External facilitator factors and Internal facilitator factors . Such findings indicated that the quality of learning and educational inclusion in basic education influenced the path of the blind through higher education. The difficulties found during attendance at higher education above all, in the selection process for university entrance the need to work/being employed during the study period, difficulties relating to the relationship to some teachers, the lack of technological instrumental and adaptation of materials in resource rooms, interferedin the subjects route through higher education. The assistance received outside the university and the support of some teachers, were facilitator factors. The basic education living of the blind, the difficulties and the facilitator factors, were not, however, decisive for the completion of higher education; the main factors identified in the data and interpreted with the support of the studies developed by Vygotski, were the internal (subjective): consciousness and will. It was defended the thesis that the consciousness about the discrepancies between the lived and the expected reality, generated the wish to complete higher education, that is to say, factors connected to the subjectivity of the students, leading the group of blind which was studied, to achieve this goal.
