Ellen, Sjömålen January 2024 (has links)
This essay highlights the resonance that occurs between place, narrative, and storyteller. The study's object of knowledge is the phenomenon of genius loci and the oral storytelling tradition. Genius loci is the idea that a place has a spirit or aura that is created and effected by the actions and presence of humans. It is an intangible cultural heritage, rooted in the physical place. The subjects of study are the storytellers in The Land of Legends and their experiences of telling stories in culturally historic places. In the present study storytellers participated in focus groups and individual interviews to discuss and share their experiences. This essay argues that when the storytellers perform a local legend, on the site where the story is said to have taken place, it activates and becomes a part of the place genius loci. Storytelling has the ability to give people access to layers of cultural heritage that otherwise would remain hidden. The present study wants to show that oral storytelling and genius loci are important aspects of the intermediation, preservation, and development of our shared cultural heritage. This is a two years master’s thesis in Museum and Cultural Heritage Studies.

Building common knowledge : a cultural-historical analysis of pedagogical practices at a rural primary school in Rajasthan, India

Rai, Prabhat January 2013 (has links)
The centralised control over curriculum framing and pedagogy, the generally poor quality of teaching with little sensitivity to children’s sociocultural environment; and very high drop out rates, even at the primary school level, are some of the challenges facing school education in many of the regions of India. However, one of the successful approaches to these challenges has been the Digantar school system, working in rural communities. The study is based in one Digantar School in Rajasthan and employs concepts derived from the Vygotskian tradition to interrogate the methods employed in Digantar school system. The study took Edwards’ (2010a, 2011, 2012) idea of common knowledge and Hedegaard’s (2008, 2012, 2013) idea of institutional demand in practices as conceptual lenses through which to investigate the components of the pedagogical practices that help Digantar teachers to align the motives of the school with those of the child in classroom activities. In doing so it analyses the institutional practices that lead to the development of common knowledge that in turn facilitates how teachers engage pupils as learners. Data were gathered over six months and comprised around 120 hours of school-based video data together with interviews and detailed observations with teachers and community members. Data were gathered in classrooms, teacher meetings, meetings between parents and teachers and at school-community meetings. Analyses focused on the construction of common knowledge and the use made of it by the school to achieve a mutual alignment of motives between the practices of the school with the community and the families. The study has revealed that teachers’ engagement with the knowledge and motives of other teachers and community members helped to create common knowledge, i.e. an understanding of what mattered for each participating group, which facilitated teaching-learning in the school. The analysis also points towards a form of democracy, which enhances children’s participation in their learning. It was found that building and sharing of common knowledge and creating a socially articulated ‘space of reasons’ (Derry 2008) produced a pedagogical model that engaged children in creating their social situation of development, seeking and recognising the curriculum demands being placed on them.

Learning to Teach English in situ: A Collaborative Narrative Inquiry

Chen, Jin shan Unknown Date (has links)
This collaborative narrative inquiry reconfigures and represents the lived experiences of four female prospective TESOL teachers’ learning to teach through a campus-based tutoring program. The research foci of this inquiry-based study are twofold. Firstly, the research aims at exploring how prospective TESOL teachers learn to teach through practical teaching experiences, as they examine the definition of learning to teach itself and the understanding of the what and how of the learning process evolves. Secondly, the research investigates the role of the social and institutional context in prospective TESOL teachers’ learning to teach, in examining how activity setting shapes the process of learning to teach. Drawing on the research approach of narrative inquiry, prospective TESOL teachers’ stories are told in their own voices while the school’s stories, and the stories about the school are told by the supervisor of the structured program in this research, the researcher, for purpose of providing a context to the prospective TESOL teachers’ stories. Following such respects, research questions are generated with special emphasis on (a) the transformational process of the prospective TESOL teachers’ learning to teach in situ; (b) the driving forces for the transformation to take place; (c) how the prospective TESOL teachers make sense of the lived experiences of learning to teach. The prospective teachers’ collective story appeared to be a progressive mode of development. The transformational process was overwhelmingly influenced by the dissonance and conflicts emerging from the contradictions within and across the collective activity system of teaching, namely primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary contradictions. In order to solve the problems resulting from the contradictions, the prospective teachers undertook changes and transformation in their teaching. Three types of driving force appeared to be significant for the transformation in the process of the prospective teachers’ learning to teach, including contextual force, strategic force, and attitudinal force. During the process of engaging in the socially situated activity of teaching, the prospective teachers formulated new conceptualizations of teaching, inclusive of the understanding of their teaching and of themselves as English teachers, of the students as English learners, and of the nature of English learning. The findings of the research suggest that a campus-based tutoring EFL program could be an alternative form of practicum teaching. Corresponding to previous research into teachers’ learning and learning to teach in second and foreign languages, three notions are provided. Firstly, the process of learning to teach prospective teachers includes continuous observation, analysis, evaluation and reflection on the entirety of the teaching activity embedded within a specific context, rather than shifting their focus from one entity to another entity, such as focusing on themselves at early stage and then shifting their focus to either on students or instructional techniques. Secondly, the process of prospective teachers’ learning to teach includes changes and transformation following iterative analysis and interpretations of cross-level activity systems to determine possible dissonance and solutions with the help of structured resources. Thirdly, research into teachers’ learning should employ a holistic research approach with a comprehensive perspective in analyzing and interpreting existing gaps in teaching practice.

Learning to be at a distance : structural and educational change in the digitalization of medical education

Pettersson, Fanny January 2015 (has links)
As an expression of current challenges faced by contemporary societies, past decades have witnessed heavy demands for higher education to change and transform. One key question here has been the increased digitalization of higher education. Within this wider setting, this thesis deals with an attempt to handle the increasing shortage of physicians in Sweden by way of digitalizing medical education. The aim of this explorative and longitudinal thesis is to describe and analyze structural and educational transformation work in medical education during the digitalization of the program and the transition from face-to-face to distance education. This thesis focuses on teachers, students and management, who are all heavily involved in this transition of the medical program. Two questions guide the research: (1) what are teachers’ and students’ expectations pending the transition, and what are the influences of already established tools and activities on the program and (2) in what ways do conflicts and changes occur over time, and how do teachers, students, and management deal with these as part of the transition? Cultural-historical activity theory (CHAT) serves as the theoretical framework of the thesis. In particular, the concepts of dominant and non-dominant activities, conflicts, transitional actions, and levels of learning inform the analysis. The data are generated by surveys (N = 108), logging of actors’ activity patterns (N = 100 teachers and 100 students), field studies (65 hours), and interviews (N = 62). The data cover teachers’, students’ and management’s roles in the transition. The analysis shows that the way of theoretically understanding the transition – from a dominant face-to-face activity to a new and unproven non-dominant distance activity – have proved to contribute to deeper understanding of the process of digitalizing medical education. The analysis further displays how the transition from face-to-face to distance education creates considerable conflicts that over time force teachers, students and management into structural and educational transformation work. This type of work successively renders new educational design solutions and new flexible ways of organizing distance medical education. This thesis discusses how the structural and educational transformation work forces actors to collectively engage in the transition by experimenting with new suitable methods and designs, as digital technologies and technology-enhanced learning (TEL) could make sense to teachers and students when they are at a distance.

Ombyggnad och ändrad användning av en kulturhistorisk värdefull skola från 1850 / Reconstruction and changed use of a cultural-historical valuable school from 1850

Jörnklev, Sebastian January 2019 (has links)
To use existing buildings that would otherwise be empty could be a part of the solution regarding the housing shortage in Sweden. When changing older buildings, it is important to consider the cultural and architectural values. When changing usage to dwellings and improving energy efficiency it is important that it is carried out carefully on older valuable buildings. The purpose of the work is to contribute to an increased understanding of how the architectural and cultural-historical values of an older building can be preserved despite a change in use from one function to another. The goal of the work is to examine how a cultural-historical valuable building can be changed to functional dwellings in conjunction with reduced energy usage. The work is based on a case study of a school building from 1850 in Vanstad, Skåne.   An introducing review of theory is a bout older building and installation solution, cultural value and qualities in dwellings. Which acquis to follow during reconstruction and change of usage, design requirements according to BBR and actions to reduce energy usage. Four different studies regarding reduction in energy usage on older brick buildings are studied. The case study building is not K-marked but is pointed out as a valuable building that is worth preserving in documents from Sjöbo. It is recommended that buildings constructed before the 1900s should be kept as authentic as possible.   Based on information gathered through inventory of archive material and inventory of the case study building a description on the case study building is made which is the basis for a design proposal for changed usage from school building to housing. Sjöbo is requesting smaller apartments which the design proposal considers. The design proposal resulted in 7 apartments where 6 out of 7 has a living space between 35 m2 and 55 m2. Because of the buildings age and older building techniques the building does not reach todays energy requirement. The design proposal documents which actions that is possible to implement to reduce the energy usage. Every apartment is reviewed to control which qualities is achieved in the dwellings. The measures advocated is: additional insulation on walls and roof, sealing of the climate shell, change of ventilations system, heating system, installation of solar cells and improvement of window and doors.   The result shows how it is possible to design functional dwellings in an older cultural-historical valuable building. To apply energy efficiency measures to reduce the energy usage and improving the indoor climate is also demonstrated in the result. Regarding profitability considering reconstruction, changed usage, reduction in energy usage and design of dwellings more in-depth studies could be made regarding the actual energy savings and LCC calculations for further economic insight.

Movimento e contradição: a disciplina de práticas em ensino de física e a formação inicial de professores de física sob a perspectiva histórico-cultural / Moviment and contradiction: the course of Practice of Physics teaching and the initial teacher education in Physics under a cultural-historical viewpoint

Rodrigues, Andre Machado 10 July 2013 (has links)
Following an international trend, in the last decades the initial teacher education program in Brazil started to include more and earlier aspects of professional practice in the curriculum of higher education. In particular the expansion of Practicum hours included in an even sharper questions about the integration between university and school, the role of the basic education system in teacher education and the integration between subject content to be taught (e. g. Physics), the educational content and the experience in the future workplace. These issues are the subject of the course of Practice of Physics Teaching, which was established in 2008 to meet these new demands and organize part of supervised internship. In this research is analyzed the course of Practice of Physics Teaching carried out in 2010 with about 60 undergraduates divided into two classes. Focused mainly on experimental approach for teaching Physics, students should prepare for conducting lessons are developed at school every two weeks throughout the academic year. Three basic activities in which undergraduates participate: (i) The training held in the classroom with the help of the Physics teacher at school, (ii) the planning workshops for the Practicum in which undergraduates were assisted by monitors/teachers educators, (iii) the classes in which undergraduates make reports on events during the Practicum. Through qualitative research were collected several sources of data such as video recordings, interviews, questionnaires and analysis of written and documentary material. Using a mixed method analysis of the data - between inductive and deductive reasoning - was possible to build a comprehensive picture of the course organization and the course dynamics weekly and throughout the year. Based on the cultural-historical theory of activity initiated by Vigotski and later developed by Leontiev, Engeström and many other scholars was possible to build a robust analytical tools to understand the course\'s dynamics and its contradictions. The analysis was constructed from three focus: The first one refers to the formation of the object of the discipline, showing that it is a historical object and complex. Precisely the diversity of participants and hierarchical levels causes the object to be multifaceted and contradictory. The second focus of the analysis is the material life of discipline, especially as the lab guidelines were re/produced over time, providing the researcher to important elements of the teaching-learning and participation of undergraduate students in the discipline. The third focal point of the analysis is on the concept of agency, as the critical action transforming the activity itself. On completion of stage undergraduates have to make decisions, organize the participants and act on new information that was not even planned. The agency provides important information about how integrated the Practicum are to the daily life of the school. Finally, the analytical framework for the course/Practicum allows us to end point in directions possible object expansion and therefore the transformation activity stage producing an organic integration between the university and the school.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Lucilene Santos Silva Fonseca.pdf: 22240332 bytes, checksum: 6b30013c834bbeef9ca840e368c140c9 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-07-30 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The overall objective of this research is to investigate the agency of an undergraduate student of the Faculty of Language and Arts in Spanish language, along her work in the discipline Practice of Foreign Language Teaching (FL), permeated by the actions of the teacherresearcher in a university located in a city of the metropolitan area of São Paulo. We have perceived that many of these students, after completing graduation, start teaching classes in elementary and high schools without the practical experience of teaching a foreign language (LE). This problem motivated the following specific objectives with this focus: (1) identify language features that enable us to understand the agency of the participant; (2) identify how the proposals of the discipline enable the development of the agency of the participant; (3) analyze the type of agency revealed in the development of the participant. The theoretical and methodological choice in constructing contexts of comprehension, reflection and transformation, with respect to the teaching and learning of languages and the role of language in these contexts is endorsed by the Critical Collaboration Research (MAGALHÃES, 2010). This theoretical framework is based on the Theory of Socio- Historical-Cultural Activity (VYGOTSKI, 1934/1998, 1930/1999; LEONTIEV, 1978; ENGESTRÖM, 2001), focusing on the concepts of teaching and learning and development, mediation and Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) as a socio-cultural-historical space of coming to be, in which language organizes a collaborative-critical relationship between the participants. Data has been collected aiming to recover and understand the agency of the work done by the undergraduate student during the discipline Foreign Language Teaching Practice. First we selected thrirteen (13) texts done by the undergraduate student through her activities as a teacher in pre-service. This work is justified for collaborating with discussions about Faculty undergraduate courses with degree in Foreign Languages (FL) and the agency's role in the development of the discipline Teaching Practice of FL. This work integrates CNPq, Contradiction and Collaboration Research, led by PHD. Professor Maria Cecilia Magalhães Camargo of the da PUC-SP University which aims to investigate ways of questioning, presenting, countering arguments that constitute activities of school context, with emphasis on teacher training, such as reproductive and/or creative productions of meaning for proposing a research framework and organization of these activities in more creative perspectives.

A colaboração crítica na formação de professor para atuar na EAD / Critical collaboration in teacher training to work in EAD

Made available in DSpace on 2016-04-28T18:23:08Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Luiz Miguel Martins Garcia.pdf: 2030272 bytes, checksum: fef4af7218de911119fbb19cc97c2b70 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-07-31 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This study aimed at critically understanding the construction of a teacher training practice between the researcher-teacher and a teacher of a BA distance course in Management. It is based on the following questions: What are the knowledge production modes in the teacher's practice with learners in the forums? How do the teacher-student relations observed in the forums permeate the reflective sessions between teacher and researcher? What are the distance relations established among participants? Which results are revealed? How do the distance relations between the direct participants (teacher and researcher) and the indirect participants (teacher and students) affect the concept and define distance knowledge production? What defines distance education? The theoretical and methodological bases of the work arise from the Dialectical and Historical Materialism (MARX, 1845-46/2007) which considers research as a movement from the practice, real world, to the theory, ideal world. It also considered that the relations between the subjects occur in dialectical movements motivated by a need and mediated by instruments; Socio-Historical Theory (VYGOTSKY, 1935/1998), which inserts language as a genuine instrument in human relations and discusses learning and development from the perspective of the ZPD; Activity Theory (LEONTIEV, 1972); Language in critical-collaborative relations (MAGALHÃES, 2012); Argumentation (LIBERALI e FUGA, 2012; MAGALHÃES, NININ e LESSA, 2014); Critical teacher education (LIBERALI, 2006); Interactive approaches to Distance Education (VALENTE, 2003a); Transactional distance (MOORE, 1993/2002). The results demonstrated the impossibility of knowledge production in teacher and students relationship in the QeA forums, as the preference was given to the use of the Message tool, which provides private relations (student-teacher) instead of collective forums (teacher-student and student-student). Therefore, these non-existent relations in the forums influenced and transformed the perspective of the relations between teacher and researcher in reflective sessions, becoming a locus of critical teacher education in Distance Education contexts. As far as the relations of distance between the participants are concerned, they showed that the knowledge production occurs in a transmissive approach, from the perspective of virtualization of the traditional school and with the teacher centralizing the actions and distributing "knowledge". This research showed that the concept of distance needs to be thoroughly rethought in the current scenario as the technological resources which have characterized Distance Education so far deconstructing its spatiotemporal foundations more and more. Besides, it allowed the construction of a critical-collaborative practice between researcher and teacher enabling questioning, negotiating and reframing the sense of Distance Education. At the end of the meetings, the teacher considers that the priority is not to discuss the new digital technologies as well as their possibilities, but to deepen the pedagogical discussion in critical perspective in order to know how to use the available tools in each context better / Este trabalho teve como objetivo compreender criticamente a construção de uma prática de formação de professores que se deu à distância entre um professor pesquisador e um professor de curso superior de Administração na modalidade de Educação a Distância.

Adopts as theoretical-methodological cultural-historical psychology, in particular, the concepts of Vigotski. Construction of information procedures were used observations recorded in regular classes field journals; conversations with the team manager and with teachers; meetings with students mediated by artistic activities; semi-structured interviews with students and with parents and/or guardians. The results indicate that the school and its contents are far from promoting the interests of students, just because there are no spaces in which meanings are negotiated and what new directions about the role of the school in their lives can be configured.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Daniela Fernandes Lopes Dornelas.pdf: 1193324 bytes, checksum: 04f92bb6718a57bfc6ffcf2a7775b04c (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-12-18 / This research discusses pedagogical practices in Early Childhood Education and analyzes the concepts and practices of teachers of children from zero to three years of age on the development of oral language. Therefore, the research problem reflects on how the development of oral language is understood by teachers of Early Childhood Education who work with children from zero to three years. Considering the importance of the relationship between language and thought in the development of concepts in children, we identified the relevance of studying the development of oral language in children from zero to three years in the perception of teachers. For this research, two schools of Early Childhood Education were selected, one public and another private, in the city of Indaiatuba. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with the teachers, one from each school, and also systematic observations of their classes. The research is based on the theory of human development in the historicalcultural perspective of Vigotski and historical-critical pedagogy, supporting the education of young children based on an educational work that aims to bring students to the systematized knowledge produced by mankind in a historical, cultural and scientific way. After analyzing the interviews with the teachers and observation records of their classes, we identified the following categories of analysis: Beyond the expansion of vocabularies; Once upon a time there was the language and the thought...; Play and talk, just get started!; What?s said, done and the effect. We could verify that the practices of the teachers could contribute more to the development of oral language, if there were adequate working conditions, as well as an academic formation that provided a theoretical and practical base directed to the phase with which they act. Thus, the contributions of this research aim to deepen the studies in the area of Early Childhood teacher education, highlighting the importance of intentional teaching related to the development of oral language, especially those who work with children from zero to three years, and also reinforcing the need for an academic formation that meets the specifics of teaching for this age group.
