Izgi, Hilda January 2017 (has links)
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to clarify and analyze alienation, as a social phenomenon described in two teenage books. The study will also examine the creation of sympathy towards main characters and what impact the novel as a whole could have on it. The intention is also to uncover the role of the Other, as well as to visualize the creation of distance between different ethnic groups. Method: The study is based on a qualitative text-analysis. It includes four different dimensions, including the author’s background and the researcher´s interpretation. Conclusion: The study demonstrates that it´s possible to find values in both of the novels, and therefore makes it possible to create opinions and statements that may contribute to alienation. It also demonstrates that alienation can appear in different forms based on the characters different background. Question formulation: What attitudes and values towards immigration, ethnicity and alienation can be found in the two novels? How are they conveyed in the two novels? What differences and similarities could be found in the characters' ethnic alienation?

Claésson, Linnea, Sandberg, Matilda January 2017 (has links)

Alienation of Children from their Natural Environment - Changes in Middle Childhood

Vosátková, Lucie January 2015 (has links)
This thesis deals with a very topical issue. The theoretical part contains information relating to the alienation of children (human) from nature. The thesis offers an introduction to selected perspectives of human on nature in its history. There is described a relationship between man and nature, from a psychological point of view, clarified the term "alienation" or "alienating nature" and listed the expected consequences of this alienation. Attention is also focused on environmental sensitivity and summary of findings from previous research of alienating nature of children in the Czech Republic. Subject of interest is also the development of leisure activities and value preferences of Czech youth. In the research part of the thesis there is children's relationship to nature, based on the amount of their experiences in the natural environment, determinated by questionnaire survey. Comparison with the results of previous research findings showed that although the issue of alienation of children from nature is solved, the situation does not improve nor deteriorate. Equally interesting are the findings of a growing unsubstantiated fear of children in nature, but it does not have any effect on many experiences in the natural environment. A comparison of the results of the research also showed that...

L'exclusion est un fait total : Pour une analyse contemporaine de la subjectivité / Exclusion is a total fact : A contemporary analysis of subjectivity

Finizio, Laurence 08 December 2012 (has links)
This thesis seeks to highlight a concept of exclusion which brings together the psychoanalytical episteme with modern anthropology and philosophy. My clinical practice in the field of the socially vulnerable and drug addiction has led me to question the connection between the individual and the societal, requiring the subject to be understood as a ‘cultural being'. The originality of the approach lies in the phenomenon of exclusion, which itself is the product of a discourse. As the extreme form of dissociation proper to modernity, exclusion reveals today an urgent contemporary need to redefine what is articulated in what lacks from the conception of the subject. The general hypothesis tested in this research is that the excluded subject suffers from an exceptional status which can appear as a prejudice in relation to the reinforced discursive field of the ideal of unity within a community. The experience of exclusion returns the subject then paradoxically to a position of absolute individuality at the same time as demonstrating a lack of differentiation. My research is praxeological, based on a study of transference. It seeks to highlight the quality of things studied rather than to predict their reproducibility. Using accounts of meetings, the hypothesis is tested through the validation of the effects of interpretation in the dynamic of transference. It is critical in this research to understand exclusion through its value as experience, in order to defend a psychoanalytical theory of exclusion which, beyond the form associated with material exclusion which we recognize, would reveal a much more global level of experience of which everyone today can sense an effect.

Bytí v celistvosti / Integrity Being

Křečanová, Alena January 2012 (has links)
This theoretical study attempts to reflect the general problematic of modern society in complexity, the gradual constitution and development of estranged being as well as the contemporary effort to interconnect being as an integral whole. The study also contains an analysis of altered states of consciousness, which are understood as a certain means to view the world as integrated. We use the notion of consciousness to define the altered states of consciousness. The structure of the thesis is divided into five chapters. While the first chapter is focused on description and analysis of alienation and other negative aspects of modern society, the second chapter is based on this reflection of the crisis of western society. Its subject is the work of several scientists who contribute by their works to a qualitative change of the mechanistic and materialistic conception of the world and who promote holistic approach to reality. The key topic of the third chapter is phenomenon of consciousness and interdisciplinary theories of consciousness. We deal also with the qualitative altered states of consciousness, that offer some potential. The fourth chapter concentrates on the history and methods of research of altered states of consciousness and delineates their basic characteristic and their functions. The...

Varför är "hemmasittare" frånvarande från skolan? : ett inifrånperspektiv på karriärer av skolfrånvaro

Ivarsson, Diana, Nurminen, Tanja January 2016 (has links)
The aim of the study was to gain an understanding from an insider perspective why dropouts are absent from school. Four qualitative interviews were conducted with former dropouts and two qualitative interviews with school representatives. The interviews were analyzed using theory triangulation based on interactionism, structurally and social constructionism perspective. The results showed that school absenteeism was applied to individual properties. The affecting individual properties differed among the informants. Emotional alienation and personal shortcomings was depicted in the former dropouts. Different medical diagnosis was the main reason for the different individual properties, according to school representatives. Insider perspective highlighted that the former dropouts school absences could be understood as an exclusionary process with feelings of inferiority to anomie. School representatives envisioned that the exclusion process continued because of parental education (in) ability and imagined the home as a comfort zone with "curling parents". Former dropouts waited to be intercepted in the school as a danger zone and understood increased resources necessary for the promotion of school attendance. School representatives realized that aid resources were necessary when absence from school was usual.

One love : Homophobia and the Jamaican press

Lundgren, Malin, Salemark, Nanna January 2009 (has links)
Jamaica is a beautiful island in the Caribbean well known all over the world for its Reggae music and its message of One love. But it is neither the songs about love nor the striking beauty of the island that awoken our interest. It was the widespread homophobia that can be found both in the Reggae lyrics, as they often promotes violence against homosexuals, the law against buggary and in almost every other corner of the society. We wanted to know if this homophobia also could be found in the press. Therefore the aim of this study is to find how LGBT-persons are being described in the Jamaican press. Do the press reflect or oppose the homophobia in the society? Our theoretical framework is about socialization, identity and the building of a nation, of which in all media is a part. It is also about how alienation is created by the media. Our material contains of all articles from the four main newspapers in Jamaica, The Daily Observer, The Gleaner, The Chat and The Star, that in someway touches LGBT-persons during a two week period, between November 10 and November 23, 2008. We use all of these 27 articles to make a quantitative analysis and four of them are handpicked for a qualitative analysis. As a complement to the articles we use qualitative interviews with the editor in chief of The Daily Observer Vernon Davidson, and the Senior lecturer of Media and Communication at University of West Indies, Canute James. We find that the homophobia in the society is in some ways reflected by the Jamaican press. LGBT-persons, especially homosexual men, are described as different, abnormal and as standing outside the Jamaican society. This strengthens the alienation. The great reggae and dancehall stars are often more defended than criticized for their homophobic lyrics in the press. What we also find is that there is an ongoing debate about the homophobic hatred as being a part of an old society that it is time for Jamaica to grow out of. In other words the proud Jamaican nation of which the homophobia is a part should change according to some, whilst others do not want their nation to adapt itself to other countries views.

Bergman, Malin, Flodin, Emma January 2019 (has links)
Unsuccessful organizational changes can imply risks that include anxiety, stress and conflicts within the agency. While the management expects the agency to function as it always has, it is not uncommon for the implementation work to be imposed on the employees. Therefore, there is a risk that organizational changes can have consequences that results in people resigning. This bachelor's thesis aims to examine how the reorganization of the Swedish police which implemented on January 1, 2015 is experienced by cops in Intervention activities. Furthermore, we also intended to create an understanding for how police work has been affected by this particular organizational change. What makes our study unique is that it in a nuanced way highlights new aspects of the reorganization from a sociological approach directed on the police officers own emotions and experiences related to the organizational change. The theories we have chosen to start from deal with organizational change from a structural perspective, but also at the individual level. The organizational models Lean Production, The Bureaucratic organizational form and The organizational change theory we have chosen to apply to create an understanding of how the police experience the reorganization's business idea in practice. We have also used the theories Alienation and The struggle to Recognition to gain a deeper understanding of how the police experience that the reorganization has affected their work and working conditions. Our sociological analysis will be based on all theories, scientific articles and the empirical compilation through a detailed discussion in relation to each other. Our study had been based on a qualitative approach through which we collected the empirical data by semi-structured interviews. The collected empirics, associated with our theoretical basis, formed the foundation for our analysis as well as our concluding reflections and conclusions. The most comprehensive conclusion we can compose from the police officers personal experiences of the reorganization, is that there was a deficient communication and information related to the reform that constituted resistance and frictions within the agency.

Loneliness and Emotion Recognition: A Dynamical Description

Unknown Date (has links)
Loneliness – the feeling that manifests when one perceives one’s social needs are not being met by the quantity or especially the quality of one’s social relationships – is a common but typically short-lived and fairly harmless experience. However, recent research continues to uncover a variety of alarming health effects associated with longterm loneliness. The present study examines the psychological mechanisms underlying how persons scoring high in trait loneliness perceive their social environments. Evaluations of transient facial expression morphs are analyzed in R using dynamical systems methods. We hypothesize that, consistent with Cacioppo and Hawkley’s sociocognitive model, subjects scoring high in loneliness will exhibit hypervigilance in their evaluations of cold and neutral emotions and hypovigilance in their evaluations of warm emotions. Results partially support the socio-cognitive model but point to a relationship between loneliness and a global dampening in evaluations of emotions. Keywords: loneliness, perceived social isolation, social dynamics, emotion recognition. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2017. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection
