Algorithmic Modifications to a Multidisciplinary Design Optimization Model of ContainershipsGanguly, Sandipan 24 July 2002 (has links)
When designing a ship, a designer often begins with "an idea" of what the ship might look like and what specifications the ship should meet. The multidisciplinary design optimization model is a tool that combines an analysis and an optimization process and uses a measure of merit to obtain what it infers to be the best design. All that the designer has to know is the range of values of certain design variables that confine the design within a lower and an upper bound. The designer then feeds the MDO model with any arbitrary design within the bounds and the model searches for the best design that minimizes or maximizes a measure of merit and also meets a set of structural and stability requirements.
The model is multidisciplinary because the analysis process, which calculates the measure of merit and other performance parameters, can be a combination of sub-processes used in various fields of engineering. The optimization process can also be a variety of mathematical programming techniques depending on the type of the design problem. The container ship design problem is a combination of discreet and continuous sub-problems. But to avail the advantages of gradient-based optimization algorithms, the design problem is molded into a fully continuous problem.
The efficiency and effectiveness with which an optimization process achieves the best design depends on how well the design problem is posed for the optimizer and how well that particular optimization algorithm tackles the type of design problems posed before it. This led the author to investigate the details of the analysis and the optimization process within the MDO model and make modifications to each of the processes, so that the two become more compatible towards achieving a better final design. Modifications made within the optimization algorithm were then used to develop a generalized modification method that can be used to improve any gradient-based optimization algorithm. / Master of Science

Modelling and analysis of sustainable operations management: certain investigations for research and applicationsGunasekaran, A., Irani, Zahir, Papadopoulos, T. 2013 December 1918 (has links)
Yes / Sustainable operations management (SOM) can be defined as the operations strategies, tactics and techniques, and
operational policies to support both economic and environmental objectives and goals. The subject of sustainability
has gained much attention from both researchers and practitioners in the past 6–8 years. Most of the articles deal
with sustainability from environmental perspectives, but a limited number of them integrate both economic and
environmental implications or focus on trading-off between profitability, competitiveness and environmental
dimensions. Moreover, there is a limited focus on modelling and analysis (MA) of SOM integrating and balancing
the interests of both economic and environmental interests. Therefore, an attempt has been made in this paper to
review the extant literature on SOM. The objective is to understand the definition of SOM and present the current
status of research in MA, as well as future research directions in the field. Considering the recent focus of the
subject, we review the literature on MA of SOM beginning in 2000 in order to make our study current and more
relevant for both researchers and practitioners. Finally, a summary of findings and conclusions is reported.

This work deals with field measurement techniques in large electromagnetic enclosures namely reverberation chambers. Due to the perturbation of the field distribution within a resonant cavity due to the presence of an introduced object, conventional field measurement techniques employing an antenna suffer from a limited accuracy. Therefore we propose a new measurement technique of the electric field distribution based on the perturbation theory; it consists of a measure of the cavity resonant frequency variation when displacing a small perturbing object within the cavity, and leads to the electric field distribution. The choice of the perturbing object shape, dimension and material is discussed with the help of simulation and measurement results in a canonical case in order to adapt the measurement setup to the studied case. This technique is then successfully employed in a reverberation chamber equipped with a mode stirrer, as well as to measure the field within a metallic box placed in the cavity. Using a post-processing based on MUSIC algorithm, this approach has permitted to determine accurately the field directions-of-arrival in the reverberation chamber

This thesis focuses on the study of the orientation of Classic Maya burials (AD 250 - 900/1000). The research is directed towards the understanding of the presence of the south orientation of burials in the Belize Valley and its surroundings. While the presence of the cardinality of the Mayan worldview is established as reflected in the architecture, settlement patterns, form and function of divine agents, agriculture, etc., it is rarely analyzed in funerary treatment studies. Thus, the aim of this research is to understand the extent of the practice of the south orientation of the deceased on the Mayan territory, to understand its origin, and its possible signification(s). Data from the Classic burials of five Belize Valley sites (Baking Pot, Barton Ramie, Blackman Eddy, Cahal Pech, and Xunantunich), four Vaca Plateau sites (Minanha, Pacbitun, Mountain Cow, and Caracol), and three sites located west (Holmul) and north (San José and Altun Ha) of the two previous regions have been compiled. The results reveal that the heart of this practice lies in the Belize Valley, although a south orientation of the deceased was found everywhere. This practice seems to appear at the end of the Preclassic Period and analysis revealed no link between south orientation and certain variables (age, sex, position of the deceased). Finally, it was found that it is possible that south orientation of the deceased is connected with the passage of the deceased in the underworld, and that it is a local choice in connection with the status and the identity of the deceased.

3D-2D-3DJOHANSSON, ANNA January 2014 (has links)
The area of this work is a combination of draping and printing. It strives towards the technique that dazzles the eye with illusions of more than one dimension. As a viewer you will believe that the prints are real drapings while they are flat surfaces. Today prints in fashion are categorized as placed prints or all-over prints, and generally created as a flat surface to decorate the garments. In this work the idea is to manipulate and challenge the boundaries of print and give it life through the body shapes and in the movement. Potentially this work could be an introduction to a new way of working with prints in fashion. This work could poosibly be presented as a new technique where placed- print and all-over prints comes together- called placed all-over prints. Also, it could develop into further techniques in using two-dimensional flatness and save fabric in using photography as an option to the real three-dimensional drapings. Furthermore could it mean savings in material as a conscious choice in the process ? This investigation explores two particular kinds of techniques, - print and draping, that are merged into one expression. The aims of this work is to find new ways of using print in combination with draping in dress and explore the possibilities to find a new technique to create interesting womenswear. To unite dimensions like two-dimensional and three-dimensional as a method of finding new forms and expressions. Through experiments with striped textiles the focus is to investigate the possibilities of greater visual effects on two-dimensional prints. For a depth and to exaggerate the directions in the fabric before translating it into a flat surface the striped textile can be a tool for further design. The striped textile has the potential to help the eye to understand the directions in the print and can be used in more than one dimension and color. To explore how to create 3D effect on 2D in print design through draping in dress is the aim of this work. / Program: Modedesignutbildningen

Relações dialógicas entre O Barão, de Sttau Monteiro e o conto homônimo, de Branquinho da Fonseca / Dialogical relations between The Baron, of Sttau Monteiro and the homonym tale, of Branquinho of FonsecaFreire, Rogeria Alves 19 September 2008 (has links)
This lecture intend to demonstrate how the short-story O Barão, by Branquinho da Fonseca, published in 1942, was stylished by Sttau Monteiro. Thus, we describe some intertextual mechanisms constant in the homonymous play adapted for the theater in 1964. To start, we will discuss the concepto if intertextuality, from the Mikhail Bakhtin studies about language, and the Julia Kristevas theoric contributions, besides other Researcher, that have enlarged the bakhtian directions on dialogism. Within those principles we are also investigating the messages suggested by the directions. Finally, the analysis of the intertextual mechanisms and of the socio-political conception of the playwright intend to confirm that Sttau stylished Fonsecas work.

Unlimited passion: the opposing schools of stage violence in Shakespeare and KaneBrasherfons, Lukas 01 May 2017 (has links)
William Shakespeare and Sarah Kane are playwrights who for drastically different reasons have left indelible impacts upon the theatrical world. A key factor in each of their plays is the presentation of violence. Shakespeare uses violence for observable, orthodox reasons of driving the plot forward, while Kane uses it for sensory effect, social commentary, and for subverting traditional narrative expectations. This study examines how violence and fighting work as dramaturgical tools in these playwrights’ work, by individual examination, juxtaposition, and the use of other pieces of drama to inform these two differing schools of theatrical violence.

Trafficking/människohandel : En människas egentliga värdeLindberg, Hannah January 2012 (has links)
With focal point on the national directions, created by Länsstyrelsen (Swedish county administration) in cooperation with National Method support against Trafficking (NMT), this paper aims to depict the phenomena trafficking and also portray the concurrent counteracting against trafficking in Sweden that authorities exert. All involved participants in this mechanism have their particular remit and their ability to interact is hence of utmost significance. In order to fully comprehend and be able to analyze these unified operative execution-elements and processes in Sweden we also have to understand what is proceeding in the international arena. The organized crime-combine is not restrained by boundaries and continuously develop and refine methods in sexual trafficking, that has grown into an expanding multibillion industry. International counteracting is consequently a worldwide existing matter of utmost interest. Therefore we will also, in our report, present international machines such as International Organization for Migration (IOM). In regard to the proceedings in the international arena, concerning empirical and methodical techniques and information of research findings, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) occupies the leading place in the analysis. The main focus, the cornerstone of this paper, is an inquiry into the formerly relatively unknown and unexplored aspects of what happens to individuals who have been subjected to sexual trafficking in Sweden after governmental intervention implicating forced re-allocation to the country-of-origin. There is an essential need for permanent structures for rehabilitation, acceptable socio-economic standard and effective methods to prevent victims of crime to be exposed to reoccurring exploitation. The basis for the analysis has been an organizational theory of society. This has been the foundation also for the understanding of collaboration between different actors and has accordingly given insight into the strengths and weaknesses of the mechanism of interaction.
