Is Female Empowerment Hindering Gender Equality? : A Case Study of Uuguja Island of Zanzibar Tanzania

Ait Maalloum Ährlin, Emmy January 2023 (has links)
The work for female empowerment is prominent on the Unguja island of Zanzibar. Governmental support and local and international organizations are investing in women to achieve gender equality. The government of Tanzania has added changes to the law to protect women and prevent gender-based violence, as well as strategic measures to assist the stakeholders of the Zanzibarian society. Simultaneously, the reports of gender-based violence (GBV) are increasing on the islands according to the Zanzibar Female Lawyer Association. The study explores the measures taken by the government to eliminate violence against women with a focus on the role of the man in these structural social and legal changes. The study also shows the challenges that the added laws have faced in practice, and the balance between culture and legal system in a society, when a change is to take place.

”Det går ju inte att undervisa om fucking hållbarhet när grundprincipen som att sopsortera inte finns!” : Agenda 2030 i Hem- och konsumentkunskapsundervisningen / "It's not possible to educate about fucking sustainability when the fundamental principles like waste sorting don't exist!" : Agenda 2030 in Home Economics Education

Berneklint, Camilla January 2024 (has links)
Sustainable development is an area that must be included in all secondary school subjects. However, the global goals in Agenda 2030 show a complexity that can be difficult to integrateinto all subjects. This study focuses on Home Economics in secondary school. The purpose isto highlight teachers' experiences of working with this in their teaching. The study comprisessix semi-structured interviews with teachers of Home Economics. Central lines of thought inthe study are based on Dewey's reflection about teaching where meaning-making, inquiry, democratic methods as well as practice and theory are linked to form a holistic approach. The result shows a breadth of methods and the way the subject is integrated into teaching. Insummary, the study shows that teachers tend to teach sustainable development rather than createlearning for sustainable development. The teachers mainly work with the aspects of health, economic, and environmental issues where practice and theory form a holistic approach.

Sustainable Stakeholder Framework for Hotels : Supporting Sustainable Tourism Management in Vlora, Albania / Intressentramverk för hotell : hållbar turism i Vlora, Albanien

Berggren Ek, Alma, Espling, Ella January 2021 (has links)
This study aims to create a sustainable tourism stakeholder framework for hotels in Vlora, a popular tourist destination in southeast European country Albania. As tourism is one of the major driving forces towards better social and economical conditions in Albania but simultaneously poses threats towards nearby ecosystems and protected areas, local traditions and cultures and small suppliers, the importance of sustainability in the industry has risen as a top priority. Conducted on behalf of UNDP Albania, the stakeholder framework aims to function as an outline for a sustainable management plan, leading to future eco-certi cation for hotels. The stakeholder framework, which includes  five-key stakeholder categories; operational, employees, clients, suppliers and local community, each with well tested CSR-practices linked to them, aims to promote sustainable development for the entire destination. The hotel, placed in the center, isused as a driving force towards closer collaborations with other stakeholder categories. The framework was tested on Vlora's largest hotel actor, Regina Hotel Group, through a questionnaire and interviews with four top management executives. The key findings show that Regina Hotel Group has come far in their social sustainability, in particular regarding employees and local suppliers, but lack in sustainability training, leading to lower awareness and sustainability mainly being implemented for financial reasons. Lastly, a recommendation with examples of short- and long-term implementations is presented for the hotel, connected to each stakeholder category.

Runoff Reduction Benefits of Retrofitted Enhanced or Extended-Depressed Tree Pits of the Beasley and Landsdale Neighbourhoods in Hamilton, Ontario

Rawlins, Robert January 2019 (has links)
This research explores the potential of retrofitting enhanced or extended-depressed tree pits (ETPs/EDTPs) around existing street trees to bolster pre-development hydrological processes in two Hamiltonian neighbourhoods to help satisfy their social, economic, and environmental needs and work toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Using QGIS and openly available data to create catchment areas, establish the feasibility of a 20:1 catchment to pit area ratio, and investigate the performance of five available structured soil cells, the innovative Analytical Probabilistic Model (APM) for Bioretention systems was adapted to conduct a parametric sensitivity analysis and subsequently compute the Road Runoff Reduction Efficiency (RRRE) of the designs under different climatic scenarios. The catchment to pit area ratio, design storage depth, and final infiltration rate were found to have a significant impact on the RRRE while the average evapotranspiration rate did not. Based on a 75% efficiency cut-off, and assuming a 20:1 catchment to pit area ratio, the shallowest two depths were deemed ineffective in all final infiltration rate scenarios while the largest depth provided efficiencies greater than 75% runoff reduction even when faced with the lowest rate of 6 mm hr-1. Comparing the RRRE during current climatic conditions to a simulated 2050s winter suggests that the RRRE of the deepest implementation is impacted only half as much as the shallowest; larger systems are more resilient. This research has reinforced the versatility and efficiency of the Analytical Probabilistic Model for modeling system performance of LIDs and ETPs, supports the prominent findings of the efficacy of enhanced tree pits to significantly contribute to urban stormwater management and re-establish more natural and sustainable hydrologic processes, and promotes them as a key to reaching the SDGs in Hamilton, Ontario. / Thesis / Master of Applied Science (MASc) / The Sustainable Development Goals call for action from every member of society. This research explores the potential Stormwater Management Engineers have to do so by retrofitting street trees with Enhanced or Extended-Depressed Tree Pits, increasing rooting volume and offering the tree more water from the adjacent road to simultaneously meet the natural needs of the tree and reduce urban runoff.

Liebler, Malte, Munther, Maria January 2024 (has links)
This study examines how ESG news affects companies' share values, as well as how the ESG categories individually affect share values. The study focused on Swedish listed companies and covers a total of 150 news articles from the period 2021-2024. This led to share values for 74 different companies being analyzed. The news articles were selected from Dagens Industri and the share values were taken from Avanza. The study was conducted with an event study to examine how specific events affect share values. In accordance with previous studies, a measurement period of 11 days per event was chosen. Four pairs of hypotheses were formulated and tested with two-tailed t-tests. The results showed that ESG news affects companies' share values, especially news within the environmental and governance categories. These categories were found to have a significant impact and created greater market reactions than the social news.

The Journey and Translation of The Inner Development Goals (IDGs) in South Korea : An Investigation of IDG Dissemination in Korea as a Contribution to Gender Equality

Dijkstra, Iris, Mäurer, Jana January 2024 (has links)
Ideas are fundamental to human progress, influencing global viewpoints and organizational contexts. The Inner Development Goals (IDGs), emerging from Sweden to support the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), emphasize personal skills for tackling societal challenges. South Korea, despite economic success, is facing significant gender inequality, ranking low on the Global Gender Gap Report. This study aimed to explore the travel, translation, and dissemination of the IDG Framework in Korea. Specifically, it examined how the IDGs are spread, materialized, and manifested within Korean society and what role carriers of the IDGs play in this process. Furthermore, it discovered if the framework's objectives could catalyze meaningful transformations in addressing the pressing social issue of gender inequality in Korea. The research explores translating IDGs to South Korea, addressing local cultural contexts and gender issues. Using Czarniawska and Joerges's “Travel of Ideas” theory and Scott’s “Institutional Carriers,” it aims to determine if IDGs can mitigate gender inequality in Korea, employing qualitative data from expert interviews. Aligning with the social constructivist philosophy, the empirical data was collected and analyzed using an abductive research method. This research shows the importance of idea translation, the carriers of this idea and their legitimacy in Korean context as crucial for institutionalizing the IDG Framework in Korea. To effectively address gender issues, it is imperative to contextualize the IDGs within the framework of male perspectives.

A Comprehensive Analysis of the European Union’s Integration of the Right to Development and the Sustainable Development Goals : EU Development: From Policy to Practice

GIRALT, Lauren January 2024 (has links)
This study delves into examining how the Right to Development (RtD) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are integrated into the development strategies of the European Union (EU) with a focus on comparing Romania and Finland. I seek to grasp the complexities, obstacles, and opportunities in EU development collaboration by exploring EU development strategies’ progression, policy frameworks, and implementation methods. Through analyzing policy papers, institutional structures, empirical data, and theoretical perspectives, this research underscores the EUs dedication to fostering inclusion, human advancement, and sustainable progress. This study pinpoints strengths and weaknesses in how the EU approaches development by utilizing data from stakeholder interviews and a comprehensive literature review. The comparative assessment of Romania and Finland sheds light on how differing historical backgrounds, societal dynamics and economic circumstances influence national development strategies as they align with EU goals. Romania's transition from a regime to a market-oriented economy highlights its emphasis on reforming governance practices, enhancing infrastructure facilities, and addressing disparities. In contrast, Finland’s stable democratic governance system places an emphasis on innovation initiatives and robust social welfare systems that serve as examples for leveraging existing strengths towards development goals. The research findings indicate that although the EU has made progress in aligning its policies with development priorities, there are still hurdles to overcome in achieving complete policy coherence, engaging stakeholders effectively, and implementing policies across various situations. Suggestions include improving policy coherence, encouraging inclusive stakeholder involvement, and utilizing technologies to tackle emerging issues. This thesis adds insights to the conversation on development by offering practical recommendations for policymakers, professionals, and academics looking to further the EU development objectives in a complex and ever-changing global environment. The study highlights the significance of tailored approaches that consider the socio-economic backgrounds of member states while aiming for a unified and inclusive development strategy within the EU.

Exploring Strategies of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises within the Food and Beverage Industry to Contribute to Sustainable Development : Through the Lens of Dynamic Capabilities and Leadership

Fabianova, Tereza, Scholz, Miriam January 2024 (has links)
The Sustainable Development Agenda 2030 is halfway to the finish line, underscoring the urgency for engagement of all stakeholders to accomplish its overarching objectives. The private sector, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises, play a crucial role, with a significant potential to advance sustainable development. Nevertheless, they frequently abstain from sustainable endeavours due to several constraining factors such as lack of resources or knowledge. This thesis aims to explore strategies for sustainable business practices that SMEs implemented despite these limitations. These strategies can consequently enhance their contribution to the Agenda 2030. Building on the theoretical concepts of dynamic capabilities and transformational leadership, a case study was developed including eight semi-structured interviews with SME leaders from the food and beverage industry in Skåne, Sweden. In addition to the interviews, data from three documents provided by the interviewed SMEs were reviewed. The main findings of this thesis illustrate that SMEs can develop essential capabilities and strategies to address sustainability. Moreover, the owner-managers’ perceptions of sustainability and leadership style influence the organisational commitment towards sustainability. The strategies SMEs employ are focused on developing a long-term, holistic perspective towards sustainability, focusing on sustainable product development, adjusting their operational processes, and enhancing integration of resources of external stakeholders by maintaining collaborative efforts, partnerships, and networks.
