Clinical and laboratorial evaluation were performed in eighteen dogs with cytopathological and/or histopathological lymphoma diagnosis. Animals underwent the Madison-Wisconsin chemotherapy protocol and were evaluated clinically at each session performed weekly. The multicentric and cutaneous forms of the disease were observed in 50% and 33% of the dogs, respectively. The most common clinical sign was superficial lymphadenomegaly, combined to systemic signs of hyporexia, apathy and weight loss. The main hematological changes were anemia, thrombocytopenia and leukocytosis, associated with paraneoplastic syndromes. Elevated serum activity of lactate dehydrogenase was observed in 58% of the dogs and hyperproteinemia in 38%, attributed to serum globulin increase. Complete remission was achieved in 27% of the animals and the six-month survival rate was 33%. There was a positive correlation between the hematocrit and survival time in dogs that died, however, there was no correlation between lactate dehydrogenase and survival time. The time interval between chemotherapy and death and the advanced stage of the disease in seven animals suggest the occurrence of acute tumor lysis syndrome. The absence of response to attempts of remission reinduction in four animals may be related to the drug tumoral resistance effect.

Pós-tratamento, a frequência viral foi 97,7% no sangue, 86,4% na medula óssea e 27,3% no líquor / The present study aims at the identification of ribavirin, prednisone and DMSO’s treatment effects in dogs with canine distemper, at the identification of the viral presence in the blood, bone marrow and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) before and after the treatment and also at the identification of side effects of the experimental drugs and its combinations. Sixty dogs presenting canine distemper with neurological signs about ten days evolution were observed. The animals were hospitalized for the support treatment, assessed on daily basis and subjected to blood cells count and biochemical analysis. Groups 1 and 2 were treated with ribavirin and its combination with DMSO; Groups 3 and 4 treated with prednisone and DMSO, Group 5 treated with ribavirin and prednisone, while Group 6 with ribavirin, prednisone and DMSO. The animals were anesthetized for the cerebrospinal fluid, bone marrow and blood samples collection before and after the treatment, then the RT-PCR of the samples was proceeded. The negative were analysed according to the hn-PCR technique. The canine distemper virus were found in 95% of blood samples, 90% of bone marrow and 53,3% of CSF before the treatment. The adverse effect of ribavirin and its association with prednisone was anemia. Prednisone, at its immunosuppressive dose, led to the increase of protein and decrease of cellularity in CSF, and increase of leukocytes blood count. The antiinflammatory dose led to the CSF protein concentration’s decrease. Considering the survival and clinical improvement rates, the most successful treatment was the one applied to the G2 (80%); followed by G1 (70%); G5 (70%) and G3 (70%); G6 (60%); and the lowest rate G4 (30%). After the treatment, the virus frequency was 97,7% in the blood, 86,4% in the bone marrow and 27,3% in the CSF

For being the biggest cause of death among the canine females, mammary cancer arises the interest of the scientific community; therefore its presentation and clinical outcome are very similar to the cases of breast cancer in woman. In intention to allow the following of comparative studies between the tumors of dogs and women, immunohistochemical markers were performed to estrogen receptors (RE), HER-2, p63 e CK5, to classify the tumors according to their expression, in different subtypes. Beyond that, markers to CD10, BMI-1, CD44, CD24, ESA e MUC-1 were used through the immunohistochemical in slides made by Tissue microarray technique (TMA) to evaluate the presence of cancer stem cells. From the immunohistochemical results, tumors were classified in Luminal A (RE+ e HER-2-) (25,89%), Luminal B (RE+ e HER-2+) (33,93%), HER-2 Overexpression (RE- e HER-2 +) (14,29%) and Basal (RE-, HER-2- e p63 e/ou CK5 +) (25,89%). Among 112 tumors, 75 were positive to CD10 (66,96%), 81 positive to BMI-1 (72,32), to CD44 only six tumors (5,35%) were positive, 48 positive tumors to CD24 (42,86%), 24 positive to ESA (21,43%) and 23 tumors were positive to MUC-1 (20,54%). In these tumors, four presents CD44+CD24- immunophenotypes, performing 3,57% of tumors. To correlate cancer stem cells markers with the distinct subtypes, some markers presented statistical differences, suggesting that more aggressive tumors immunophenotypes (HER-2 Overexpression and Basal) were positive to cancer stem cells markers. Besides, there were higher cancer stem cell markers in complex carcinomas, which challenge literature data because this kind of tumor was considered with better prognosis when compared with simple carcinomas. More studies are necessary with new samples to confront this research results’ and determinate the more indicated markers. Still, the female dog must be considered to be used as experimental model for breast cancer ...

For this purpose a group of fifty-five supposedly infected dogs from two different Brazilian states (São Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul) that showed suggestive Anaplasmataceae agent intracitoplasmic inclusions in white blood cells and platelets were analysed. The natural occurrence of Babesia canis was also evaluated, because its vector is also Brazilian dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus. Sequencing of a partial phragment of 16S rRNA gene from the positive samples were performed to conduct phylogenetic study. The evaluated blood cells of the studied dog population displayed a wide variety in shapes, sizes, stain pattern and localization of the inclusions. Anaplasmataceae DNA were amplified in 45/55 (81.8%) examined blood samples. Thirty-two samples were positive for E. canis (58.18%) and thirteen for Anaplasma platys (23.63%). Ten animals were negative by PCR and an analyses of a second Buffy coat smear. The obtained nucleotide sequences were analysed for similarity of the 16S rRNA gene sequence using Blast with other sequences available in the GenBank database. Destes resultados podemos... / The purpose of this study was to characterize the lesions in dystrophic muscles of DMGR dogs of different ages, by means of histopathological and immunohistochemistry analysis. Twenty-five male dogs were classified and distributed into groups according to the age: Group I - dystrophic up to 1 year, group II - dystrophic over 1 year, group III - control up to 1 year, group IV - control over 1 year. One sample from each muscle was fixed in formalin solution, processed by usual techniques of paraffin embedding, stained with HE and TGM for histopathological purposes and processed for immunohistochemical analysis of the distribution of T-lymphocytes CD3+, MHC II and vimentin. Other samples were frozen in liquid nitrogen, processed by usual techniques of freezing in order to perform the techniques of immunohistochemical labelling for CD4+ T-lymphocytes, T-CD8+ and MHC I. The results of histopathological analysis showed that the lesions in dystrophic muscles in the Group I were moderate compared to that ones in the Group II which were severe. The CD3+, CD4+ and CD8+ Tlymphocytes were more numerous in dystrophic muscles especially in areas of degeneration and necrosis. The number of CD3+ and CD4+ T-lymphocytes was found to be significantly higher (p <0.05) in all dystrophic muscles compared to controls demonstrating the involvement of T-lymphocytes in the disease. The number of CD8+ Tlymphocytes was found to be significantly higher (p <0.05) in dystrophics, except for the cranial sartorius muscles in the Group I and the diaphragm and biceps femoris in the Group II. The immunoexpression of MHC I increased with age in dystrophic animals, in contrast to MHC II that remained the same. The immunoexpression of vimentin and VEGF in the dystrophic muscles was mild (score 1) upon all muscles. From these results we can conclude that in dystrophic muscle immunoexpression of... / In view of the high incidence of mammary neoplasia in dogs, the aim of this study was to evaluate the inflammatory infiltrate cells and presence of pro and antiinflammatory cytokines in malignant tumors, and to investigate the prognostic markers in these neoplasms. For this, a sample of 30 mammary tumors from dogs was selected. The samples were divided into three groups according to histopathological classification: carcinosarcoma, solid carcinoma or tubulopapillary carcinoma. The CD3 (Dako), CD4 (Novocastra), CD8 (Novocastra), CD79-a (Dako) and CD68 (Dako) inflammatory cells, TGF-b (Santa Cruz) and IL-2r (Santa Cruz) cytokines and Ki-67, p53, estrogen receptor and progesterone receptor prognostic markers were evaluated by means of immunohistochemistry, using the streptavidin-biotin-peroxidase technique. It was found that the B lymphocyte concentration was greater in solid and tubulopapillary carcinomas. This was also seen for TGF-b cytokines, which may suggest that this cytokine was helping the host’s humoral immune response, thereby favoring the tumor. The immunoreactivity of these two markers was significantly different (P<0.05) between carcinosarcomas and the other two tumor types. There were significant differences (P<0.05) in immunoreactivity between the three tumor types for the estrogen receptor marker. For progesterone receptors and Ki-67, a significant difference was seen between solid and tubulopapillary carcinomas. For the gene p53 and MHC II, there was a significant difference (P<0.05) in immunoreactivity between carcinosarcomas and the other two tumor types. There was no correlation between the inflammatory response and the prognostic markers. There was a negative correlation between p53 and the progesterone and estrogen receptors.

In temperate zones, seasonal influence on reproductive performance of male dogs has been described, but in tropical conditions it hasn't been studied. The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of seasonality on testis function. In the study 8 adult dogs were used, with age varying between 1.2 and 6 years old, from 3 breeds (1 Blood Hound, 2 Golden Retrivier, 4 Springer Spaniel). These dogs were active studs, and they were housed in the same cannel, during 14 months. Ejaculates were collected each 15 days. Immediately after the collection, spermatic progressive motility, progressive velocity, pH and sperm morphology, were evaluated. The samples were centrifuged, the pellet re-suspended and frozen, and supernatant was evaluated for total protein, cloride, potassium, sodium, calcium and magnesium. Ultrasonic measurements of canine testis and prostate were performed. Electrophoresis was performed using 12% and 18% SDS-PAGE. The electrophoresis gel was stained with Coomasie blue brilliant R-250, scanned and analysed by a software. Molecular weight was estimated based in a standard weight. Blood collections were performed every 15 days at morning (between 8:30 and 11:30 a.m). Testosterone serum concentrations were determined by solid phase RIA (radioimmunoassay). The data from environmental temperature and pluvial index were obtained from CIIAGRO. Testosterone mean concentrations varied from 1.31 ng/mL to 2.02 ng/mL. The temperature varied from 10.2º C to 32.8º C and the pluvial index was 33 mm3 to 476 mm3. Notable individual variation was observed on testosterone serum concentrations among dogs in all seasons. There was a remarkable decrease on testosterone levels in all animals during Summer, when temperature and humidity were high. Seminal parameters before and after thawing were normal during the study...(Complete abstract click eletronic access below)

Sia, Daniel Barbosa January 2006 (has links)
The orthopedics disorders are very frequent in small animals and among them we can find the coxofemoral luxation as the most frequent disease. Because of a high incidence it became an important subject for veterinary researches. Surgery is the most effective treatment in cases of coxofomoral luxation, although the techniques that already exist are not so used in the clinics routine because of some difficulties these techniques present. In this paper the bubaline fascia lata implant and Steinmann transarticular pin were compared in surgeries for coxofemoral luxation. Twenty-six animals were used, divided into two groups that were subdivided. The first group was called “Grupo Experimental” and was formed by 16 animals, 8 animals in the subgroup called “pino” and the other 8 animals in the subgroup “fáscia”. The second group was called “Rotina” because these animals came from the routine of the clinic sector of Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul Veterinary Hospital, and these groups were also subdivided in the subgroups “pino” and “fáscia”, with 5 animal each. These groups were submitted to the mentioned above stabilization techniques and after that, they were observed clinically and radiografically during 60 days. After that, it was realized a macroscopic study in the articulations of “Grupo Experimental”, besides an histopatological exam and a tensiometry test. The results showed that the technique with the bubaline fascia lata implant proved to be really efficient and it has some advantages comparing to the transarticular pin technique. The most important advantage is related to the deambulation, where the animals in this group showed a better evolution after the surgery. The level of muscular atrophy in this group was less marked. The tensiometry tests, the radiographic and histopatological exams did not present important differences between the two groups, but they were useful to show that the two techniques did not cause bad alterations in the worked articulation. In this sense it can be concluded that the stabilization of the coxofemoral articulation using bubaline fascia lata implant is a better technique comparing to the transarticular pin technique due to its advantages, mainly related to the deambulation and the muscular atrophy.

What's in a Name: Effect of Breed Perceptions & Labeling on Attractiveness, Adoptions & Length of Stay for Pit-Bull-Type Dogs

January 2015 (has links)
abstract: Previous research has indicated that certain breeds of dogs stay longer in shelters than others; however exactly how breed perception and identification influences potential adopters' decisions remains unclear. Current dog breed identification practices in animal shelters are often based upon information supplied by the relinquishing owner, or staff determination based on the dog's phenotype. However discrepancies have been found between breed identification as typically assessed by welfare agencies and the outcome of DNA analysis. In Study 1, the perceived behavioral and adoptability characteristics of a pit-bull-type dog were compared with those of a Labrador Retriever and Border Collie. How the addition of a human handler influenced those perceptions was also assessed. In Study 2, lengths of stay and perceived attractiveness of dogs that were labeled as pit bull breeds to dogs that were phenotypically similar but were labeled as another breed at an animal shelter were compared. The latter dogs were called "lookalikes." In Study 3, perceived attractiveness in video recordings of pit-bull-type dogs and lookalikes with and without breed labels were compared. Lastly, data from an animal shelter that ceased applying breed labeling on kennels was analyzed, and lengths of stay and outcomes for all dog breeds, including pit bulls, before and after the change in labeling practice were compared. In total, these findings suggest that breed labeling influences potential adopters' perceptions and decision-making. Given the inherent complexity of breed assignment based on morphology coupled with negative breed perceptions, removing breed labels is a relatively low-cost strategy that will likely improve outcomes for dogs in animal shelters. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Psychology 2015

Understanding the Impacts of Breed Identity, Post-Adoption and Fostering Interventions, & Behavioral Welfare of Shelter Dogs

January 2018 (has links)
abstract: Each year, nearly three million dogs will enter one of over 13,000 animal shelters in the United States. The purpose of this dissertation is to better understand how breed identity and dog welfare in the shelter, in addition to post-adoption and fostering interventions out of the shelter, can contribute to the betterment of dog lives. In Chapter 2, I conducted the largest sampling of shelter dogs’ breed identities to-date to determine their breed heritage and compare shelter breed assignment by staff as determined by visual appearance to that of genetic testing. In Chapter 4, I examined the efficacy of a post-adoption intervention intended to reduce returns by encouraging physical activity between adopters and their dogs. In Chapter 6, I examined the effects of brief stays in a foster home on the urinary cortisol: creatinine ratios of dogs awaiting adoption compared to ratios collected before or after their stays; and in Chapter 7, I characterized the relationships between multiple physiological, health, and cognitive measures and the in-kennel behavior of shelter dogs. Four suggestions from the findings of this dissertation that will likely better the lives of dogs living in animal shelters are: 1) Shelter dog breed heritage is complex and visually identifying multiple breeds in a mixed breed dog is difficult at best. Shelters should instead focus on communicating the morphology and behavior of the dogs in their care to best support adopters. 2) While encouraging walking did not influence owner behavior, adopters who reported higher obligation and self-efficacy in dog walking were more active with their dogs. Thus, post-adoption interventions that can effectively target owner perceptions of obligation and self-efficacy may be more successful in changing behavior. 3) Temporary fostering is an impactful intervention that reduces stress for dogs awaiting adoption; however addressing stressors present at shelters that are likely contributing to higher stress responding is also needed. 4) It is possible to predict the internal stress responding of shelter dogs by observing their overt, in-kennel behavior, and this study is a first step in assessing and improving the welfare of dogs living in animal shelters. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Psychology 2018
