Understanding the Culture of Giving among Utility Fuel Fund Donors in Southern California

The Energy Assistance Fund (EAF) is a voluntary, nonprofit fuel fund that provides grants to income qualified utility customers in an effort to help those customers avoid electricity service disconnection. The administering utility and the energy industry as a whole is undergoing transformative change, resulting in a projected decrease of fundraising capacity for EAF among its most substantial donor pool - utility shareholders and employees. Utility customers represent a small percentage of EAF donors, despite the significant size of the customer base. Through a series of ethnographic interviews and secondary research, this thesis seeks to understand the demographics and motivations of utility customers who donate to EAF in order to help improve EAF’s fundraising strategy and donor solicitations to eventually grow customer donations. The goal of EAF is to maintain or grow donations from 2014 levels so the Fund can continue to serve income qualified customers facing energy poverty. This thesis provides a contextual review of fuel funds; challenges faced by the energy and utility industry; the politics and culture of energy; as well as nonprofit sector fundraising challenges and cultures/motivations of giving. This thesis includes client deliverables such as thick description of donor motivation, motivation themes and a donor motivation map, demographic data which could be used to target solicitations, and lastly a series of recommendations for EAF to improve its fundraising strategy.

A Study of the Need For and Design of Graduate Study in Educational Resource Development

The problem of this study is an investigation into the need for and possible content and design of a specialized program of study to develop proficiencies for resource development in higher education. The study has three broad purposes. The first is to determine if there is a need for the specialized preparation of educational resource development officers in higher education; secondly, to ascertain what competencies are required of professionals in this field; and, finally, to assemble those competencies into component parts of a program of study. The following results were discovered by the study. 1) A majority of experienced practicing professionals in the field of educational resource development agrees that some form of specialized preparation for new professionals is needed. 2) Practicing professionals identified and described several competencies as well as personality traits and basic skills which are required of the educational development officer. 3) A majority of experienced practicing professionals agreed on a general format for a formal program of advanced degree work that would include an internship, master's level work and would terminate with some overall form of competency evaluation

The referenced presentation resulted from the practical experience of these two institutions, making it possible to prove the importance of the relationship of these institutions to their alumni, representing much more than a source of sustainability. It signifies the continuity of the institutions, since the main purpose of the relationship is to keep strong the bonds of the alumni with their alma mater. For that, interviews with the leaders and fundraisers of the two institutions have been performed, with the intention to elucidate how the fundraising process with the alumni started, the techniques of making solicitations, and the results. The problem of the research follows from the question: how can relationship marketing contribute to fundraising with alumni of these institutions? Starting from the analysis of the fund raising developed by the two institutions with their alumni, it arrives at the central point of work, which is the analysis of the influence and the interposition of the relationship in relation to the results obtained from the fund raising. The approach of Relationship Marketing is appropriated to fund raising in non profit institutions and its relevance is essential in this research to understand the cases described and explain the successes realized. It is concluded that the tools of relationship marketing have been partially applied in the two institutions and resulted in success in fund raising, as can be confirmed in the respective financial results. The most important aspect is the commitment to keeping the relationship, by means of communication, information technology, and involvement. However, the alternation of power in the governing body of both institutions interrupts the leadership of fund raising, a fundamental factor for the success of this type of action with alumni. Without the maintenance and the continuity of the relationship with the alumni, the fund raising sector loses position in strategic planning, becoming weakened or completely abandoned / A proposta do presente trabalho é a apresentação de um estudo de caso de captação de recursos com ex-alunos de duas Instituições de Ensino Superior brasileiras, a FGV-EAESP e o Mackenzie; analisado sob a ótica do marketing de relacionamento. Esta pesquisa é resultado da experiência prática dessas duas instituições, e possibilita comprovar a importância do relacionamento dessas instituições com os seus ex-alunos, que representa, além de uma fonte de sustentabilidade, a continuidade das instituições, visto que a principal finalidade do relacionamento é manter aquecidos os vínculos dos ex-alunos com sua alma mater. Para tanto, foram realizadas entrevistas com os líderes e captadores de recursos das duas instituições, com o intuito de elucidar como se iniciou o processo de captação de recursos com os ex-alunos, as técnicas de solicitação e os resultados obtidos. O problema da referida pesquisa parte da seguinte questão: como o marketing de relacionamento pode contribuir para a captação de recursos com ex-alunos dessas instituições? Partindo da análise da captação de recursos desenvolvida pelas duas instituições com seus ex-alunos, chega-se ao ponto central do trabalho, que é a análise da influência e da interposição do relacionamento em relação aos resultados obtidos pela captação de recursos. O enfoque do Marketing de Relacionamento é apropriado para a captação de recursos em Instituições sem Fins Lucrativos e a sua relevância é fundamental nesta pesquisa para se compreender os casos relatados e explicar os sucessos obtidos. Como conclusão, pode-se afirmar que as ferramentas de marketing de relacionamento foram aplicadas parcialmente nas duas instituições e obtiveram sucesso na captação de recursos, conforme se pode constatar nos respectivos resultados financeiros. O aspecto mais importante é o compromisso em manter o relacionamento, por meio da comunicação, da tecnologia da informação e de ações de envolvimento. Contudo, a alternância de poder no corpo diretivo de ambas as instituições interrompe a liderança da captação de recursos, fator primordial para o sucesso deste tipo de ação com ex-alunos. Sem a manutenção e a continuidade do relacionamento com o ex-aluno, o setor de captação de recursos perde posição no planejamento estratégico tornando-se enfraquecido ou mesmo levado ao completo abandono

Diese Arbeit untersucht Genese, Struktur und Legitimation der Spendengewinnung bei den deutschen Glaubensmissionen von ihren Anfängen bis zum Ausbruch des Zweiten Welt-krieges. Den Untersuchungsgegenstand bilden die drei ältesten Glaubensmissionen in Deutschland: die Neukirchener Mission, die Allianz-China-Mission und die Liebenzeller Mission. Als besonderes Merkmal der Glaubensmissionen wird in der Literatur das soge-nannte Glaubensprinzip bezeichnet, das einen bewussten Verzicht auf Spendenwerbung beinhaltet. Die historische Entwicklung des Glaubensprinzips von Anthony Groves über George Müller auf Hudson Taylor wird nachgezeichnet. Eine leitende Frage der Untersu-chung ist, inwieweit die deutschen Glaubensmissionen dieses Glaubensprinzip tatsächlich übernehmen und umsetzen. Bei der Analyse von Spendentheorie und -methodik der drei genannten Missionen kristallisiert sich heraus, dass von einem Verzicht auf Spendenwer-bung bei den drei ältesten der deutschen Glaubensmissionen nicht die Rede sein kann. Im Falle der Allianz-China-Mission wird das Glaubensprinzip erst gar nicht ernsthaft adap-tiert, die Liebenzeller Mission gestaltet es ihr entsprechend um, und die Neukirchener Mis-sion muss sukzessive eine Erosion des Glaubensprinzips miterleben. Die Untersuchung beinhaltet ebenso ein Interpretationsmodell zur Bestimmung der Schlüsselfaktoren, die tatsächlich relevant für die Spendengewinnung der Glaubensmissionen sind. 本文主要目的擬以台灣某上市司所發行海外可轉換交換債為例,探討海外可轉換交換債作為我國上市公司財務工具的可行性、作業、管理及其成本效益。海外可轉換交換債,是現代財務衍生的一項籌資工具,在台灣尚不算極普及的財務工具應用。國際企業身處在一個整合和變動的世界經濟活動中,如何利用台灣上市公司的企業利基,運用海外可轉換交換債取得國際資金和資金成本效益。本研究選擇以探討海外可轉換交換債作為我國上市公司財務工具的可行性,並且深入了解其必需具備的各項企業條件及選擇可轉換標的決策考量,探討發行海外可轉換交換債的各項法規限制及發行海外可轉換交換債的國際金融環境,以研究發行海外可轉換交換債的應用及其成本效益,了解組織財務管理及發行海外可轉換交換債的各項作業與決策管理,並透過海外可轉換交換債與其它財務工具的成本效益比較海外可轉換交換債此項財務工具的實質效益。 / The main purpose of this thesis is to discuss the possibilities, operation, management and cost-effectiveness of European Exchangeable Bonds by using a Taiwanese listed company as an example. European Exchangeable Bonds is a modern financing tool that it’s still not a popular application in Taiwan. However, international corporations are in integrated and dynamic world economic activities. We’d like to discuss how to use the advantages of the Taiwanese listed company to make use of European Exchangeable Bonds to get international funds and make profit on cost of capital. The research would choose a company as instance to discuss in deep about the feasibility of European Exchangeable Bonds and the considerations of issuing European Exchangeable Bonds. We will research the restrictions of issuing process and the international financing environment and to discover the application and operation cost effectiveness of European Exchangeable Bonds, and then compare practical benefits between European Exchangeable Bonds and other financing tools.

受到氣候極端變遷的影響,近年來,世界各地接二連三地出現許多重大天然災害,讓我們賴以生存的地球,正面臨著嚴峻環境災難的考驗。面對這個重要課題,除了政府必須肩負的責任外,非政府組織從環境保護、減災預防、災難準備、以致災難發生時的緊急救援,到災後的復建與重建工作等環節上,也扮演愈來愈重要的角色,近代各國政府都把積極參與人道救援的非政府組織視為災難救援和賑濟上的重要伙伴。 人道救援和一般社會服務工作的動員模式與服務取向不同,除了必須在短時間內滿足無法事先確定的大量需求外,人道救援的目的是在有限資源的前提下,公允地維持受災民眾必要的生存環境、條件與尊嚴。是以,人道救援組織從平時救災人員的訓練、養成,救災器材設備與救援物資的整備,到災難發生時可以快速反應的動員能量,甚至災後不管復原或重建階段各項專業領域的參與,都需要掌握相當實力的資源,才能在必要的時候派上用場。 目前國內主要從事海內、外人道救援的民間組織,其從事人道救援的財源幾乎百分之百依賴民間捐款,而因應每次災難事件的不同,其所募得款項的多寡差異非常大,但國內相關影響重大災難募款金額多寡的因素研究卻很少,為使有限、寶貴的社會資源可以更合理、妥切地被運用,研究者以紅十字會在九二一大地震之後十年來十五起賑災專案募款的結果,運用個案研究的深度訪談以及焦點團體的探討,嘗試彙整出影響國人重大災難捐款的因素。 是以,本研究從災難本身、捐款人、勸募者及社會政經情境等面向,歸納出可能影響重大災難募捐款項的二十個因素,藉以分析說明並對照實務上募款金額的多寡。此外,本研究也提供了幾項重大災難募捐的特性,希望可以做為國人或後續研究者參用。 最後,本研究建議國人應該深切體認資源有限,整體社會的資源不管來自何處、流向何處,其總和也是不變的,因此,無論是資源的擁有者、分配者、執行者,以及在這個過程中可能影響資源分配運用的關係人,如政府、媒體等,都應該珍惜這個寶貴的資源,善用它,讓它發揮應有的社會功能。尤其,人道救援是一個關乎生命,非常嚴肅的議題,很多人認為重大災難捐款是一種衝動性捐款,但研究者卻堅信捐款行為只是表象,其真正是人的「愛心」在驅動,因此,必須從理性、審慎的態度來探究愛心背後可能影響捐款人作為的因素,並進而提供國人的愛心一個更好的捐款與資源運用環境。 / As a result of extreme climate changes, the world has witnessed many major natural disasters. Hence, the earth on which we live is confronting severe environmental challenge. To cope with such a severe challenge, other than the governments which must take up the responsibilities, NGOs are playing more important roles which include environmental protection, disaster prevention, disaster preparedness, as well as in the event of occurrence of natural disasters, emergency relief, recovery and reconstruction. Nowaday, the governments treat NGOs as their indispensable partners in the efforts of disaster rescue and relief. Humanitarian relief is different from social working network. The former must within a short period mobilize resources to meet unpredictable yet huge amount of need. The objective of humanitarian relief is to provide the people who were adversely affected by the disasters with resources, however limited, to live with dignity and fairness. Therefore, NGOs doing humanitarian relief must prepare themselves not only in the training of rescue teams, securing adequate equipments so that they can respond promptly to disasters, but also be in command of substantial resource so as to meet the urgent need in emergency relief, recovery and reconstruction. The humanitarian organizations of Taiwan, whom undertake disaster relief in Taiwan and oversea, obtain funding almost 100% from the private sector. Since the amount of fund raised in different disasters can be vastly different, to help rational allocation of limited yet valuable resources in disaster relief, the author has made efforts to collect data from 15 disaster-fund-raising events since the 921 earthquake in 1999, and to analyse the factors that are relevant to the donors’ behavior. The author has also carried out analysis of the factors by in-depth case study and focus group interview. On the basis of such data, case study and interview, the author has identified 20 factors from such perspective as nature of disasters, donors, fund-raising organizers, social-economic- political situation, etc. This paper also enumerates a number of important characteristics of fund-raising in major disasters. To conclude, the author likes to point out that the sum total of resources available to any disaster effort project is a constant. Therefore, all players in any major disaster relief project, including the organizers, the media, the government and others, must carefully use the resources and to achieve maximum utility of the resource for the benefits of those who are in need, to recover and to re-live from the disaster. Such an observation is meaningful because humanitarian relief is a serious subject and donation is not merely an act of impulse, it is also an act of “love”. Therefore, we must carefully explore the relevant factors that contribute to the donors’ behaviors. Only by so doing, we can structure a better environment under which fund-raising motivated by “love” can be truly successful and meaningful use of such resources to the maximum benefit of the people affected by the disasters be assured.

隨著兩岸三地臺商卓越的競爭能力與大中華經濟的迅速發展,海內外臺商發展為配合其長期追求成長之資金需求與其個別特定目的,尋求於最適地點上市籌資或再次籌資已是海內外臺商經營環境中極為重要之ㄧ環。有競爭力的臺商是亞洲各國極力爭取投資及招攬上市掛牌籌資的貴客,因其卓越的經營績效,敢於追求成長的努力,與勇於冒險創新發展的精神,是亞洲各國學習的對象,尤其是來自中國大陸的吸引力。 為臺商提供了一個有效率而低成本的籌資平臺,同時提供投資人一個安全而有成長率的投資平臺,不但有利企業的後續發展,亦關乎產業發展之未來競爭力。 臺商雖然可以在全球證券市場上市掛牌,但在大中華經濟圈中大陸與香港素來是臺商企業投資之重要地域,隨著CEPA簽訂生效,更加連結香港與中國內地之經貿關係,在大批中國大陸具國際規模的國有企業往香港上市,香港證券市場更呈自1997回歸後,出現欣欣向榮的景象,加之中國大陸於股權分置改革執行初具成效後,於2006年初宣佈恢復新股上市,重啟上市申請機制。受此籌資環境變化影響,吸引了大批臺商擬選擇此兩地上市。 臺灣證券市場雖仍是多數海外臺商上市之「最佳解」,在人親土親的原則下可能會對臺商企業有諸多吸引力,但因招商政策之擬定與執行受到政治因素之影響而有所偏頗,限制對中國大陸投資上限及再籌資之資金不得投資中國大陸等障礙,臺商回臺上市面臨諸多壓力,回臺之路猶似近在眼前,卻遠如天邊,其路漫漫。故尋求在中國大陸或香港上市便成為臺商上市籌資之「較適解」選項。 如何突破目前法規架構下發展對臺灣經濟與產業發展競爭力之最為有利的方式是目前政府部門努力的方向之一。惟,反向思考,是否解開對大陸投資上限40%之障礙,臺商回臺上市必可迎刃而解呢?臺商赴港上市或赴大陸掛牌就一定是致命吸引力嗎? 藉由探討兩岸三地證券市場之發展現狀與特色﹔以及將臺商企業已在大陸上市、香港上市與回臺上市之營運面與證券交易面之表現,由該已上市臺資企業期後財務效益,檢視兩岸三地證券市場籌資之關聯性問題與上市決策之選擇關鍵,及群聚現象對產業發展之影響。 藉由深入分析兩岸三地資本市場之特徵與股市表現,試圖找尋可行途徑,以對臺商企業籌資及臺灣證券市場有所建言。 當全球交易所的合併收購蔚成風氣,紐約證交所(NYSE)於2006年6月以將近100億美元併購協議,以現金加計股票收購歐洲證交所(Euronext),首次建立橫跨大西洋兩岸的證券交易市場。惟,上市籌資具本土化特性,現今大量中資企業以H股或紅籌股到香港掛牌,而臺資企業亦經過集團分拆或組織重組到香港掛牌,均存在跨境監理之問題,而兩岸三地證券管理制度存在一定差異,若能彼此合作組成「大中華區域證券市場」─雙邊掛牌機制甚或多邊掛牌,則臺灣企業集團在兩岸三地間上市籌資、資金運籌就不會受制於相關兩岸三地間的利益衝突問題;具國際競爭能力之中資企業亦能吸納更多國際資金;香港投資銀行及金融之優勢可以更加發揮,達到三贏之局面。 政治是短暫的,產業經濟競爭能力才是長久的。從曾傲人經濟表現的亞洲四小龍,到金磚四國的崛起,產業經濟競爭不斷在演進,臺商及兩岸三地證券主管機關如何利用兩岸三地證券市場之特性與互補而整合成「大中華區域證券市場」,或許可為此區域經濟創造三贏之利益。 關鍵詞:臺商; 籌資; 投資; 初次上市;再籌資; 掛牌; 資本市場; 股票市場; / With rapid development of Greater China's economy of three places (China, Hong Kong and Taiwan) of two sides, listing in the most suitable exchange to fund-raising by IPO and SPO are quite important for the Taiwan enterprises. In this research, we compare and contrast the characteristics among China, Hong Kong and Taiwan stock markets. Surveying the performance of business operation and dealing of the Taiwan enterprises which have listed in China or Hong Kong or come back to list on Taiwan market. Analyze and find the influence factors of the fund-raising among these three markets. Find the key points of listing decision and how the “cluster effect” influences the industry development. The results achieved through regression on panel with fixed time effect model is that the deadlines that have greater representation in the investor's choice are the windows from one month up to six months and from six months up to one year history, longer terms have the same positive relationship but fall considerably. / A relação entre captação e desempenho é muito estudada na literatura brasileira de fundos. Os artigos sobre o tema atestam que os investidores tomam suas decisões de investimentos baseados no desempenho recente dos fundos, aplicando mais em fundos com bom desempenho recente do que em fundos que rendem abaixo da média de mercado. Esse trabalho dedica-se a, mais do que investigar a relação entre captação e desempenho de fundos de investimentos no Brasil, aprofundar o estudo no tocante ao prazo de retorno mais considerado pelos investidores ao escolherem em qual fundo investir. O resultado alcançado através de nossas regressões em painel com efeito fixo de tempo é de que os prazos com maior representatividade na escolha do investidor são as janelas de um até seis meses e de seis meses até um ano de histórico. Prazos maiores têm a mesma relação positiva, mas caem consideravelmente.

Diese Arbeit untersucht Genese, Struktur und Legitimation der Spendengewinnung bei den deutschen Glaubensmissionen von ihren Anfängen bis zum Ausbruch des Zweiten Welt-krieges. Den Untersuchungsgegenstand bilden die drei ältesten Glaubensmissionen in Deutschland: die Neukirchener Mission, die Allianz-China-Mission und die Liebenzeller Mission. Als besonderes Merkmal der Glaubensmissionen wird in der Literatur das soge-nannte Glaubensprinzip bezeichnet, das einen bewussten Verzicht auf Spendenwerbung beinhaltet. Die historische Entwicklung des Glaubensprinzips von Anthony Groves über George Müller auf Hudson Taylor wird nachgezeichnet. Eine leitende Frage der Untersu-chung ist, inwieweit die deutschen Glaubensmissionen dieses Glaubensprinzip tatsächlich übernehmen und umsetzen. Bei der Analyse von Spendentheorie und -methodik der drei genannten Missionen kristallisiert sich heraus, dass von einem Verzicht auf Spendenwer-bung bei den drei ältesten der deutschen Glaubensmissionen nicht die Rede sein kann. Im Falle der Allianz-China-Mission wird das Glaubensprinzip erst gar nicht ernsthaft adap-tiert, die Liebenzeller Mission gestaltet es ihr entsprechend um, und die Neukirchener Mis-sion muss sukzessive eine Erosion des Glaubensprinzips miterleben. Die Untersuchung beinhaltet ebenso ein Interpretationsmodell zur Bestimmung der Schlüsselfaktoren, die tatsächlich relevant für die Spendengewinnung der Glaubensmissionen sind.
