This paper is used to study the implications that power has in a fictive story about the apocalypse. In the fictional novel, Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, there are different positions that express power and by analyzing them different attitudes emerge. This study uses the narratological model by Mieke Bal, which is used to analyze the different aspects of a text by focusing on the different dimensions of structure in narratives. To interpret the results this study uses the power and knowledge theory developed by Michel Foucault by inserting it in an apocalyptic and eschatological context. By analyzing the material one should consider the modern approach to religious authority that exists in modern adaptation, such as popular culture. Therefore, including popular culture as a culture hostile to authority, the results show that the material criticizes traditional values and norms regulated by religious authorities in society. The thesis demonstrate that the novel by Pratchett and Gaiman can be defined as apocalyptic and eschatological literature and that it contains different connotations of power in an eschatological and apocalyptic context, such as God and fatalism and also the suspense between Heaven and Hell as well with individuals. The last result shows that different attitudes towards power are present in the novel, such as social justice, fairness and independent thinking. The final result is later used to discuss how the different attitudes can be used in popular culture to influence their readers. Finally the total sum is that the characters are used to bring forth a band of various criticisms against the power displays of religious authorities in society through a selective reading of the novel.

Traditionellt ges information på museum ut skriftligt, dock i vårt arbete belyser vi hur man kan visualisera samma information med hjälp av filmteknik. Vi undersöker olika alternativ gällande berättande där en händelse från förr blandas med nutid. Hur kan information förmedlas genomt ett visuellt perspektiv? Denna undersökningen har använt en kvalitativa metod då vi inte strävar efter ett mätbart resultat utan experimenterar inom ett visst område. Som hjälp inom vår utforskning av områden så används “The Good Eye” som en analysmetod och litteraturstudier samt en semistrukturerad intervju. Enligt våra genomförda intervjuer blev resultatet att visuell information förmedlas tydligare till åskådaren gentemot textlig, men löper risken att åskådaren går miste om viktig kontextuell information som inte går att visa visuellt på en plats, exempelvist karaktärsbakgrund och föremåls information. Dock föredrog majoriteten att presenteras med något visuellt gentemot textligt. / In the traditional sense, information at museums is published in writing. In our work we shed light on how to visualize the same information with the help of film technology. We explore different alternatives regarding storytelling where an event from the past is mixed with the present day. How can information be conveyed through a visual perspective? This study has used a qualitative method as we do not strive for a measurable result but experiment in a specific area. To help in our exploration of areas, “The Good Eye” is used as an analysis method and literature studies as well as a semi-structured interview method. According to our interviews, the result was that visual information is conveyed more clearly to the viewer in relation to text, but there is a risk that the spectator misses important contextual information that cannot be displayed visually in a place, such as character background and object information. However, the majority preferred to be presented with something visual versus textual.

Thesis (MPA)--Stellenbosch University, 2000. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The focus in this research report is the violation of the constitutional rights of a young person in
conflict with the law in the Cape Town Magisterial District. This violation is caused by the lack
of collaboration between the different role players. The situation can be rectified with a policy
intervention which will ensure multi-disciplinary collaboration between the role players.
The researcher proves that stipulations in section 28 of the Constitution, Act 108 of 1996, are
violated because the different role players in the juvenile justice system of Cape Town
magisterial district work in a fragmented manner and do not operate as a unit. The young person
in conflict with law is harmed in this process. The situation can be rectified through a policy
intervention. The policy intervention entails a uniform administrative procedure, the drafting and
implementation of a working agreement between the role players, establishing a communication
network, combined and integrated training and a multi-disciplinary committee that evaluates and
monitors these aspects. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die fokus van hierdie navorsingverslag is die skending van die grondwetlike regte van die jong
persoon in botsing met die gereg binne die Kaapstad se landdrosdistrik. Die skendings is vanweë
die gebrek aan samewerking tussen die verskillende rolspelers. Die situasie kan deur middel van
'n beleidintervensie reggestel word ten einde multi-dissiplinêre samewerking tussen die
rolspelers te verseker.
Die navorser bewys dat bepalings in artikel 28 van die Grondwet, Wet 108 van 1996, geskend
word omdat die verskillende rolspelers in die jeugregstel van Kaapstad se landdrosdistrik
gefragmenteerd werk en nie as 'n eenheid funksioneer nie. Die jong persoon in botsing met die

het ek besluit om 'n verdere studie van laasgenoemde onderwerp
te maak tot 1860. In hierdie jaar is die vryhandelsooreenkoms
tussen Brittanje en Frankryk gesluit, wat meegebring het dat
die voorkeurtariewe wat Brittanje in 1813 op Kaapse wyn ingestel
he+, beeindig is. Die beeindiging van die voorkeurtariewe
het tot 'n ineenstorting van die Britse mark vir Kaapse
wyn, en daarmee ook die totale wynuitvoerhandel van die Kaapkolonie,

Thesis (MA(VA))--Stellenbosch University, 2014. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis examines the extent to which the cuff and the collar as semiotic entities played
a significant role in the symbolic expression of power and oppression in the seventeenth
century Cape of Good Hope. These entities were visually naturalised by the Eurocentric
imperialist hegemony at the Cape and offered as undisputed ‘truth’. These symbols
permeated the collective consciousness of the society at the Cape on both a physical and
cognitive level. The white ruff and cuffs, and the shackles of the slaves represented
physical restraints, whilst mentally the slaves were confronted with identity construction
and deconstruction. ‘The self’ was pitted against ‘the Other’, and these European values
and hierarchies were enforced on the society at the Cape by creating dualistic
relationships. An identity implies a certain amount of power. For this reason, the Europeans
stripped the slaves of their identities in order to gain control over them. This theory,
together with the investigation into the hybrid characteristic of culture as a product of
colonialism and slavery at the Cape, will be established concurrently with the aim of my
practical work — The Ruff/Rough Collection, The Shackle Collection, and The Soft Steel
Collection. This body of work aims to deconstruct the boundaries and hierarchies
established by the cuff and the collar (as symbols of the power and oppression paradigm)
at the Cape. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie tesis ondersoek die mate waarin die mouboordjie (‘cuff’) en die kraag (‘collar’) as
semiotiese entiteite ’n beduidende rol gespeel het in die simboliese uitdrukking van mag en
onderdrukking aan die Kaap de Goede Hoop in die sewentiende eeu. Hierdie simbole is
visueel deur die Eurosentriese imperialistiese leierskap ingevoer en as onbetwisbare
waarheid van hul mag en heerskappy voorgehou. Dié simbole het die kollektiewe bewussyn
van die samelewing aan die Kaap op ’n fisieke en geestelike vlak geïnfiltreer. Die wit
plooikraag (‘ruff’) wat die Europeërs gedra het om hulself as ‘meesters’ te vestig, en die

Thesis (MEd)--University of Stellenbosch, 2001. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The education of the children in the community is the responsibility of the
whole community of which the parents are part. The aim of the school is to
create responsible and respectful citizens who can make a significant
contribution to the future South Africa. The role of the school is furthermore to
establish democratic values. The school is also in a position to contribute to
the establishment of a democratic society. The governing body is an example
of a democratic institution in which representatives of the role players in
education are involved. They are democratically elected onto the governing
body. Parents are now also part of the leadership and management team of
the school. They also must contribute to policymaking. It means that they
must acquire certain skills to be productive and to deliver service in' the best
interest of the school and the community.
The South African Schools Act (1996) made provision for the need for
capacity building amongst governing bodies. In the past the management of
the school was the total responsibility of the principal and the staff. This role
has now changed, but if the governing body does not function well it will again
put pressure on the principal and the staff. This thesis is specifically
concentrating on one particular governing body and whether it is functioning in
an effective way.
A preliminary investigation was done among ten schools in the Grabouw-area.
The investigation was in actual fact done to pinpoint, the central focus for the
thesis. The central focus of this thesis is about parental involvement in the
school and how it can contribute to effective governance. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die opvoeding van die leerders in 'n gemeenskap is die verantwoordelikheid
van die groter gemeenskap waarvan die ouers deel vorm. Die doel van die
skool is om gerespekteerde en gewaardeerde burgers te skep wat 'n
betekenisvolle rol in daardie gemeenskap kan vervul. Die skool moet verder
verseker dat die demokratiese waardes van die nuwe Suid-Afrika in daardie
spesifieke gemeenskap gevestig word. Die beheerliggaam is "n demokratiese
struktuur waarbyalle rolspelers betrek word by die beheer en die bestuur van
die skool. Daar is egter baie beperkinge wat betref die vemoëns van die
persone wat daarop dien. Dit bemoeilik die vestiging van die beoogde
demokratiese beginsels.
Die Suid-Afrikaanse Skolewet (1996) maak voorsiening dat effektiewe
deelname vooraf gegaan moet word met doelgerigte kapasiteitsbou
programme. In baie gevalle het die groter magte wat oorgedra is na mikrovlak
eintlik die werklading van die prinsipaal vergroot. Sommige beheerliggame
beskik nie oor die kapasiteit om hul verantwoordelikhede uit te dra nie. Hierdie
tesis let op een spesifieke beheerliggaam en 'n evaluering word gedoen
omtrent die effektiewe funksionering van daardie beheerliggaam. Met
effektiewe funksionering word bedoel dat daar gekyk word in hoe "n mate die
werksaamhede wat deur die Skolewet opgedra is, tot uitvoering gebring word.
Die grootste leemte in die pad van effektiewe funksionering blyk te wees die
gebrekkige vermoëns van die ouers. Hierdie feit het na vore gekom in 'n
voorlopige ondersoek wat gedoen is om die fokus van die studie vas te pen.
Die sentrale fokus van die studie behels die betrokkenheid van ouers by die
skool om hul vermoëns te bou. Deur middel van hul betokkenheid by verskeie
aktiwiteite van die skool word ouers eintlik vooraf geskool om op die
beheerliggaam te dien.
