This thesis describes the work process in creating a design concept for a website to a company in the graphics industry. It stems from a human-centered design perspective in creating the concept for the website. A big part of this work has been the preparatory work in creating a target group definition and develop strategies to create a concept. Proven methods in interaction design have been used with focus on prototyping. The result is presented in the form of a graphic profile and a visual design proposal of a website which has been based on user testing prototypes. This thesis discusse the importance of a human-centered design perspective when creating a concept of a website. By using a human-centered design perspective the user is kept in focus throughout the whole design process which also promotes the created products.

Fault lines : homophobic visual perceptions of masculinityThomas, Nathan January 2017 (has links)
Submitted in fulfillment of the requirements of the Degree of Master of Applied Arts: Graphic Design, Durban University of Technology, 2017. / This study explores connections between masculinity and homophobia in a Faculty of Arts and Design at a South African university. Connections between masculinity and homophobia may have consequences for the visual representation of the male body in graphic design.
Literature suggests that gender is socially constructed and performed, and that masculinity and homophobia are connected. As such understanding this connection might assist graphic designers who are often tasked with visually representing gendered bodies. The study uses critical theory as the research orientation for inquiry, which is then related to masculinity studies.
Photo elicitation using context-free images of male body language in focus groups is the main data generation strategy. Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis with particular reference to participants’ personal stake and interest in masculinity are employed as analytical tools.
Overall, the research data reveals four discursive ‘positions’ in relation to visual perceptions of body language: human or situational performance of masculinity, socially gendered performance of masculinity, effeminate or ‘gay’ performance of masculinity, and homosexual performance of masculinity.
However, in the data these positions overlap and combine when participants manage their stake or interest in masculinity. The thesis of this study is therefore that homophobic visual perceptions of masculinity may permeate gender performance as ‘fault lines’. Although the study finds these homophobic fault lines in visual perceptions of masculinity, there is also evidence of acceptance of non-mainstream forms of masculinity. / M

Personal Narratives Changing Student Understandings of Community-based Academic ProgramsVerhille, Isabel 01 January 2017 (has links)
As a student enrolled in the Claremont Colleges, there are a variety of different ways in which I can engage with the greater Inland Empire community. The community-based programs, classes, and projects offered by the Colleges all have specific focuses, whether they be community service, community studies, or language improvement. This Media Studies Senior Thesis focuses on two community programs offered by the Claremont Colleges, the first being the Spanish Practicum program offered at Pitzer College. This half credit course places a group of three students with a “Promotora” (Promoter) or a Mexican immigrant residing in the Ontario community. Once a week, students are expected to travel to their Promotora’s house, speak with her only in Spanish, eat meals with her, and explore her Ontario community. Secondly, I will include a section about Huerta del Valle, a community garden in Ontario, California, which was created by a teacher of the Spanish Practicum program and a Pitzer alumnus. Even though this garden functions completely separately from the Claremont Colleges, Pitzer students have the opportunity to enroll in the Ontario Program and complete a semester studying urban garden, social engagement, and community planning alongside Huerta del Valle volunteers and organizers. This Media Studies project completed in conjunction with the Spanish Practicum Program and the Huerta del Valle program is a photographic essay about my personal experience as a student of the Spanish Practicum program, an article recounting the history of the Spanish Practicum program from the perspective of its creator, and a transcribed interview and series of photographs of the founder of Huerta del Valle as well as a student participant/leader/alumnus of the Pitzer Ontario program. These collections of writing and photographs are presented in the form of a webpage with multiple sections that I have coded as to experiment with visual storytelling, color, and design techniques. Furthermore, through this project I explore the communal significance of personal narratives, and the work they do to construct and contribute to a shared understanding of a program, event, or experience. These personal narratives that I have collected as oral histories will serve to give the community-based programs offered at the Claremont Colleges a human face, illuminating the tendency of dominant histories to discredit their intimate back stories.

Grafisk profilering av ett nystartat hälsoföretag / Visual Brand Identity for a startup health companyStenberg, Christoffer January 2017 (has links)
This work was conducted in collaboration with the startup company Eklundens källa. The purpose of the studies was to find out how a branding manual and a user-friendly website should be made to reflect the company's vision and core values in the most appropriate manner. A semi-structured interview was conducted with the client to get more knowledge about the company. A visual content analysis was performed to get a better understanding of how competitors are profiled, and how their websites are built. Two separate surveys revealed valuable opinions and results as the basis for the production of Eklundens källas new visual identity. The visual identity was made after Sless’ model measuring information design. The result of this work was a proposal for a more user-friendly website and a new branding manual containing guidelines for logos, colors, fonts, visual identity imagery, correspondence materials and web for the company. The respondents' answers showed that the new material largely conveyed the company's core values of safety and competence, and that it was suited to the industry.

The graphic elements of environmental design involved in productivity applied to remote workPrado Cabrera, Milagros Almendra 07 July 2020 (has links)
The research focuses its main objective on identifying the graphic elements of environmental design that intervene in productivity applied to remote work. Therefore, it was hypothesized that the graphic elements of environmental design that intervene in productivity applied to remote work are color, lighting, and visual materials and tools.
A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out in which work spaces in the home imposed by the context of the pandemic were analyzed. Among the main findings, it was identified that the majority of the examined spaces are shared areas of the home. Therefore, there is a certain limitation in optimizing the application of the graphic elements that make up the environmental design. However, those spaces that are determined for this activity have greater flexibility to personalize their space, add visual tools and the opportunity to integrate elements of environmental design.
Therefore, it was concluded that in the framework of the health emergency there is difficulty in projecting a workspace at home. However, it is confirmed that the graphic elements of the environmental design that intervene in productivity applied to remote work are color, lighting, and visual materials and tools, since these must be consigned in favor of optimizing the work experience.

The efficient web portfolio : A study to help a newly graduated graphic designer to find the right platform for his portfolioGudmunds, Joakim, Törnblad, Denny January 2020 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate which portfolio services are most effective for newly graduated graphic designers to highlight their portfolio, with the purpose of arousing interest among recruiters at advertising and communication agencies. Today there is a large variety of portfolio services that offer functions and tools for building portfolios. As newly graduated graphic designers, it is difficult to know which services are most suitable and most effective in order to present the work to a potential employer. Through semi-structured interviews with advertising and communication agencies, we have investigated what recruiters believe is important in creating a portfolio to awaken their interest in the best possible way. A survey has been conducted to get a picture of what functions and services students in graphic design want when selecting portfolio services. A content analysis of 20 portfolio services has also been made to give the authors an insight into what the most common portfolio services have to offer. The result is presented divided according to the different methods that have been implemented in the work. The study has shown that the advertising and communication agencies place less importance on which portfolio service is used and more emphasis on how relevant works are based on the agency's preferences. It is advantageous to make a unique and adapted portfolio based on the style and expression of the advertising or communication agency. Putting a certain personal touch in the design of the portfolio can be beneficial but should not take over the focus from the presented works.

Investigating Differences in Formative Critiquing between Instructors and Students in Graphic DesignLiwei Zhang (6635930) 15 May 2019 (has links)
<p>Critique is an essential skill of professional designers to
communicate success and failure of a design with others. For graphic design
educators, including critique in their pedagogical approaches enables students
to improve both their design capability and critique skills. Adaptive Comparative
Judgment (ACJ) is an innovative approach of assessment where students and instructors
make comparisons between two designs and choose the better of the two. The
purpose of this study was to investigate the differences between instructors’
and students’ critiquing practices. The data was collected through think-aloud
protocol methods while both groups critiqued the same design projects. </p>
<p>The results indicate that it took students longer to finish
the same amount of critiques as those completed by instructors. Students spent
more time describing their personal feelings, evaluating each individual design,
and looking for the right phrases to precisely express their thoughts on a
design. Instructors, with more teaching experience, were able to complete the
critique more quickly and justify their critique decisions more succinctly with
efficient use of terminology and a reliance on their instincts. </p>

Rakhyvelsförpackningar och genus : En studie om könsneutral förpackningsdesign / Razor packaging and gender : A study about gender-neutral packaging designJansson, Oscar, Petersson, Emelie January 2020 (has links)
Razors are a product that basically has the same function for both men and women, but whose packaging is gender coded to attract the different gender categories. The following study aims to investigate how razor packages differ depending on whether they target men or women. Furthermore, the study intends to investigate how a razor package can be designed to be perceived as gender neutral. In this study, gender-neutral is defined as something that does not target a specific gender. The study is limited to examining the color, typography, graphic elements and shape of the packaging. To answer the purpose, a survey and Design and creation have been applied as strategies. A literature study and visual content analysis were used as data collection methods within the survey strategy. The literature study was conducted for a deeper understanding of the topic and provided basic guidelines for designing a own design proposal. The content analysis was conducted to determine how the design of today's razor packages differs depending on whether they are aimed at men or women. Within the strategy Design and creation, Sless' working model was used for designing our own design proposal. Two surveys were conducted to test and evaluate the design proposal of the target group. The content analysis found that there is a strong polarization in the design and expression of razor packages. The conclusion determined differences in appearance depending on whether the packaging was aimed at women or men. The study also provides answers on how a razor package can be designed to be perceived as gender neutral. This is presented as two design proposals and a number of guidelines for how a gender-neutral razor package can be designed.
