Adaptation and acclimation of red alder (Alnus rubra) in two common gardens of contrasting climate

Porter, Brendan 22 December 2011 (has links)
Red alder (Alnus rubra Bong.) is the only tree in British Columbia and the Northwest US to engage in actinorhizal symbiosis to fix atmospheric nitrogen. This study was conducted to explore the plasticity in growth and physiology among 58 17-year-old red alder families in response to variation in climate in two common garden plots, one at Bowser, BC and one at Terrace, BC. Physiological assessments included height and diameter growth, bud flush, water use efficiency as measured by δ13C, cold hardiness as measured by controlled freezing and electrolyte leakage, autumn leaf senescence, and instantaneous and seasonally integrated rates of nitrogen fixation as measured by acetylene reduction and natural abundance δ15N isotope analysis, respectively. Significant differences were identified among families for growth (height and diameter), bud burst stage, leaf senescence, cold hardiness, and bud nitrogen content. No significant differences among families were identified for water use efficiency as measured by δ13C, or for rates of nitrogen fixation as measured by either acetylene reduction or natural abundance δ15N. This study identified possible adaptive differences among red alder genotypes, especially in traits such as bud flush timing, cold hardiness, or nitrogen fixation and their respective contributions to growth. These differences often reflected a tradeoff between growth and the ability to tolerate an extreme environment. Cold hardiness results indicate that red alder families are well adapted to their climate of origin, and may not be able to acclimate sufficiently to a northward assisted migration of genotypes. Nitrogen fixation results demonstrated gaps in our current knowledge of Frankia distribution and impact on the actinorhizal symbiosis in British Columbia. / Graduate

A salutogenic perspective of burnout in the nursing profession

De Wet, Charl Francois 11 1900 (has links)
The research has worked towards the general aim of generating a synthesis of burnout in the nursing profession, and also towards coming to a synthesis of burnout in nursing from the perspective of the salutogenic paradigm. Existing knowledge from the literature has been consolidated and integrated, and 'new knowledge' of the phenomenological experience of the causes and symptoms of burnout and how nurses stay healthy, were presented. Firstly was discovered that burnout, over time is caused by various factors that are individual and personal and therefore not easily discovered by other than the phenomenological method, where the life world of each individual is described. Secondly, the study ofthe strengths that nurses exhibit in order to manage the tension and stress in their lives and not to succumb to illness, proved to be a sound and descriptive paradigm with great utilisation possibilities. Three answers to the salutogenic question, namely sense of coherence, hardiness and learned resourcefulness were presented in great detail. Thirdly, it was stated that the individual nurses and the nursing practice in general be made aware of: (1) the existence of burnout, (2) the contributing factors to burnout, (3) the various manifestations ofburnout at work and in the organisation, and (4) the coping strategies available to counter this problem in a positive and salutogenic manner. The phenomenological results of this research revealed a number of issues that have implications for both the prevention and treatment of burnout in nurses. The results especially established how nurses can operationalise their inherent salutogenic qualities. Specific salutogenic coping strategies emerged via the respondents. The research took a broad view of personality in health research. It studied the psychological processes underlying the observed connections between psychological variables and health outcomes. In order to study the operationalisation of these processes, a phenomenological, person-based approach was followed. They study focussed on health phenomena and the individual nurse was retained as the unit of analysis. This approach represented a movement away from a fragmented science, infatuated with technology and linked to a singular epistemology, towards a focus on the process and dynamics of personal experience. / Psychology / D. Approche anthropologique, technologique et didactique de la maîtrise du risque corporel ; l’exemple de l’enseignement du rugby en milieu scolaire / An anthropological, technological and didactical approach to the control of physical risk, using the example of the teaching of rugby to school-age students.

Sarthou, Jean-Jacques 13 November 2010 (has links)
Physical risk is inherent to the practice of rugby and justifies the very real fear of sport and physical education teachers, a fear which is further justified by the statistics. Every fifty-nine minutes in games at a federal level there is a serious injury (for example fractures and sprains). Fifty percent of these injuries happen during the most frequent phase of a rugby game: the tackle. The challenge for teaching rugby in a school environment is therefore to create educational situations which combine the cultural elements of the activity with the high danger level, thus elevating students’ civil awareness, in the safest possible conditions. It is through a socio-cultural teaching model, based on specific physical techniques, that we will reply to this question.A sport and physical education teacher has five steps of a teaching sequence in order to transfer the content to be taught. The five steps of this transferral of content (moving away from an object of cultural significance to an object of teaching significance) include: a cultural analysis (history and socio-cultural evolution), an analysis of the rules (their function and how they have evolved over time), an educational analysis (the educational potential of rugby), a systematic analysis of the game of rugby (techniques, tactics and strategies) and a technical analysis (the importance of sportsmanship : performance, safety, values). The physical sporting techniques used within a school environment can be differentiated from the physical sporting techniques used at a federal level by the level of civility required (the level and nature of aggressiveness tolerated is relative to the level of competitiveness demonstrated). In this way the physical techniques used in school rugby allow the development of values such as respect, solidarity and responsibility.

Analyse des ressources de développement de la résilience éducationnelle devant la violence scolaire chez des enseignants québécois et roumains

Dobrica, Viorica 06 1900 (has links)
Falling into the qualitative research category, this study reports an investigation on which resources are mobilized by five Quebecer teachers and five Romanian teachers for the development of educational resilience in the face of violence occurring in schools, evaluated as a risk factor. The data analysis reveals the competences' function as resources met in the teachers mentioned above. Acting as an exploratory comparative research, this study points out the influence of different cultures, in terms of perception and impact of the experience of violence, acting upon professional competences, feelings of efficiency as well as development and operation of educational resiliency's process of teachers from both national groups. This ”ecosystemic” approach allows the enlightenment of educational resiliency's dynamic process which itself requires resources and relies on factors that secure its operation.

The meditating effect of a psychological wellbeing profile in the bullying and turnover intention relation

Van Dyk, Jeannette 06 1900 (has links)
The research focused on constructing a psychological wellbeing profile for employee wellness and talent retention practices by investigating employees’ psychological wellbeing-related attributes (constituting self-esteem, emotional intelligence, hardiness, work engagement and psychosocial flourishing), and whether these significantly mediate the relation between their experiences of bullying and their intention to leave the organisation when controlling for bullying, age, gender, race, tenure and job level. A quantitative survey was conducted on a convenience sample of employed adults (N = 373) of different age, gender, race, tenure and job level groups from various South African organisations. The canonical statistical procedures indicated work engagement (vigour, dedication and absorption) and hardiness (commitment-alienation) as the strongest psychological wellbeing-related dispositional attributes in the workplace bullying and turnover intention relationship. The mediation modelling results showed that workplace bullying significantly predicted turnover intention, which in turn, significantly predicted either high/low levels of work engagement (vigour and dedication) in one’s work. Self-esteem, emotional intelligence or hardiness did not seem likely to influence the relationship between workplace bullying and turnover intention. The multiple regression analysis indicated that participants’ biographical variables (age, gender, race and job level) significantly predicted workplace bullying, self-esteem, emotional intelligence, hardiness, work engagement and psychosocial flourishing, and turnover intention. The tests for significant mean differences indicated that participants from various biographical groups (age, gender, race, tenure and job level) statistically significantly differed regarding workplace bullying (independent variable), the psychological wellbeing-related variables, namely self-esteem, emotional intelligence, hardiness, employee engagement, psychosocial flourishing (mediating variables) and turnover intention (dependent variable). On a theoretical level, the study deepened understanding of the cognitive, affective and conative behavioural dimensions of the hypothesised psychological wellbeing profile. On an empirical level, the main findings were reported and interpreted in terms of an empirically derived psychological wellbeing profile based on the work engagement of the participants. On a practical level, the findings provided valuable guidelines for the development of talent retention and wellness interventions, which might add to the body of knowledge relating to psychological wellbeing-related dispositional attributes that influenced workplace bullying and talent retention / Industrial and Organisational Psychology / D. The relationship between hardiness and career adaptability of students studying at Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Colleges in Gauteng

Ndlovu, Velly 04 1900 (has links)
The research focused on the relationship between hardiness and career adaptability of students studying at Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Colleges in Gauteng. A quantitative survey was conducted on a convenience sample of (N = 198) of African (92.9%), female (57.6%), single (96.0%), aged 21 years and younger (93.9%) students enrolled at Gauteng TVET colleges for N1 – N6 Engineering Studies (32.8%). A correlational analysis indicated differences between the variables of hardiness and career adaptability and the study reveals that overall hardiness was significantly related to overall career adaptability. A stepwise regression analysis indicated that gender and the hardiness attributes (commitment, control and challenge) predicted career adaptability. The test for significant mean differences indicated that age, gender and field of study differ significantly between the variables of hardiness and career adaptability. Limitations for the study are outlined. Furthermore, recommendations are suggested for use by human resource regarding career development practices for TVET college students. The study concludes with an evaluation of its contribution. / Human Resource Management / M. Com. (Human Resource Management)
