A maldição da individuação: reflexões sobre o entrelaçamento prazer-medo e a expressão literária / The curse of the individuality: a thought about the relation between pleasure-fear and the literary expression

Franciscatti, Kety Valéria Simões 04 April 2005 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-04-29T13:31:08Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 A Maldicao da Individuacao - Parte 1.pdf: 58032 bytes, checksum: f0172efe9bc96140393da03961fce5cb (MD5) Previous issue date: 2005-04-04 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This PhD research, on the basis of Critical Theory of Society, has the target to show the paradox of the curse of the individuality the sufferings lived between the (im)possibilities of other s suffering and to become different as a result of the culture failure which impeaches and cut off the formative movement of the love, focusing its thought in the relation of pleasure and fear and in the potentialities of literary expression. The argumentations about these two focus can be described in two perspectives which are intersected. The first tries to put in evidence the sexual repression damage and the erotic renounce to the process of the person s formation, to raise the problems and to think about the destruction manifestations as a result of the cultural impeachments to formative movement of love, of no-fruition of the beauty, the mutilation of the senses, the foolishness of the reasoning and of the consequent hardness of the ego. The second focus tries to show the esthetic experience provided by literature (from the artist and from the receptor) as a privileged condition of contact and thought about the object of this research (the moment of the curse of the individuality), considering potentially the literary expression, without decreasing it to the psychologism, in three dimensions at the same time: as a testimony and manifestation of the unjustified sufferings, as resistance, because it contains hate (destruction of the object), and possibilities of changes the existent, because they can keep small parts which can lighten some exits from this state, alternatives to go further the destruction. The theoretical formulations from the authors of Frankfurt Adorno, Horkheimer and Marcuse; Freud; and selected literary parts from Portuguese language writers: from Brazil, Clarice Lispector and Caio Fernando Abreu; from Portugal, Fernando Pessoa (he himself and under the heteronames of Alvaro de Campos and Bernardo Soares) and José Saramago are predominantly systematized. However, the given status to the writers is different. The Lispector literary parts are in the center of the thoughts; the interlocution of other mentioned writers is aimed, emphasizing Abreu, in order to construct the discussion and the consecution of the proposed target. Also because of this reason, there is a certain relevance in the presence of another writer: Fernando Sabino, with whom Lispector exchanged letters during some years. There is no intention to discuss the work of these writers in its totality, the emphasized parts (tales, novels, poetry and letters) are worked as a representation of artistic expression in the dimensions mentioned before. With this announced target, the proposal of these argumentations and these indicated thoughts (theoretical and literacy), is intended to show the thesis that the curse of the individuality is related to, in its basis, the mutilation of the movement of love caused by cultural impeachments which damage the senses and the reasoning harmed formation which makes more difficult the installing of fruition as a way of life, which sticks the understanding and the possibility of beauty to face the sufferings mostly unjustified, in face of the existing material conditions and in that moment expressed in the literary work by the artistic expression, provides fundamental experiences to the contention, the sensitive thought and the search for possible exits from the destruction state and from the barbarous ness order, once in the art some, representing every men (among scars and fragments) expressing the prison between the desire and not getting to live, accomplish works in a desperate hope of, finally, having a free and happy life.

Classifying Hate Speech using Fine-tuned Language Models

Brorson, Erik January 2018 (has links)
Given the explosion in the size of social media, the amount of hate speech is also growing. To efficiently combat this issue we need reliable and scalable machine learning models. Current solutions rely on crowdsourced datasets that are limited in size, or using training data from self-identified hateful communities, that lacks specificity. In this thesis we introduce a novel semi-supervised modelling strategy. It is first trained on the freely available data from the hateful communities and then fine-tuned to classify hateful tweets from crowdsourced annotated datasets. We show that our model reach state of the art performance with minimal hyper-parameter tuning.

Framing the foreigner : a close reading of readers' comments on Thought leader blogs on xenophobia published between May and June, 2008

Mwilu, Lwanga Racheal January 2010 (has links)
This study was conducted to identify and analyse Mail and Guardian Online moderation outputs which contradicted the platform‟s own stated policy on hate speech and other forms of problematic speech. The moderation outputs considered were a battery of readers‟ comments that were posted in response to Thought Leader blogs on xenophobia published between May and June, 2008. This was the same period a series of xenophobic attacks was taking place in some parts of South Africa, leaving an estimated 62 people dead, more than 30,000 displaced, and countless victims injured and robbed of their property. The attacks were a catalytic moment that enabled a whole range of discursive positions to be articulated, defended, contested and given form in the media. They also made visible the potential tensions between free speech on the one hand, and hate and other problematic speech on the other. Using qualitative methods of thematic content analysis, document review, individual interviews, and an eclectic approach of framing analysis and rhetorical argumentation, this study found instances of divergence between the M&G policy and practice on User Generated Content. It found that some moderator-approved content advocated hate, hatred, hostility, incitement to violence and/or harm, and unfair discrimination against foreign residents, contrary to the M&G policy which is informed by the constitutional provisions in both section 16 of the Bill of Rights and section 10 of the Equality Act. Based on examples in the readers‟ comments of how „the foreigner‟ was made to signify unemployment, poverty, disease, unfair competition, and all manner of deprivation, and bearing in mind how such individuals have also become a site for the violent convergence of different unresolved tensions in the country, the study‟s findings argue that the M&G – a progressive paper dealing with a potentially xenophobic readership (at least a portion of it) – should have implemented its policy on acceptable speech more effectively. The study also argues that the unjustifiable reference to foreigners as makwerekwere, illegals, illegal aliens, parasites, invaders and border jumpers, among other terms, assigned them a diminished place – that of unwanted foreigner – thereby reproducing the order of discourse that utilises nationality as a space for the expurgation of the „other‟. The study argues that the use of bogus (inflated) immigration statistics and repeated reference to the foreigners‟ supposedly parasitic relationship to the country‟s resources also unfairly constructed them as the „threatening other‟ and potentially justified action against them.

Theme of despair in Charles Mungoshi's Shona works : a critical study

Mangoya, Esau 11 1900 (has links)
The study makes an analysis of Charles Mungoshi's Shona works from a Modernist perspective. In this study, Modernist literature is shown as full of change and adventure that has seen characters failing to catch up with the speed at which their social lives are going. The change is continuos and has resulted in many characters continuously failing to cope, which in turn has resulted in continuous frustrations, here described as despair. The study also shows how the despair is being nurtured in the circumstances of crumbling social institutions which, in the past, had acted as the haven for devastated individuals. The crumbling social institutions are shown to be triggering the despair and the characters are given no room to recuperate. The study makes an analysis of what brings this despair and how in the end, particular individual characters fight to ward off the despair. / African Languages / M.A. (African Languages)

Yttrandefrihetens dilemma : en idécentrerad studie om yttrandefrihetens roll och begränsningar

Persson, Daniel January 2009 (has links)
This paper concerns the freedom of speech in our democracy and the principles underlying the restrictions. The study is aimed at using a descriptive theory to provide a useful basis for analyzing a justification of the role behind freedom of speech and its limitations. The analysis is made on the basis of the Swedish parliament debate in the form of motions and the non-governmental organization Swedish Helsinki Committee's report. The study has a focus on the law of hate speech and will be done with an idea centred analysis. On the basis of democratic theory, the central role of freedom of speech was clarified on the basis of a clear need for a reliable communication. An absence of this process could disrupt the democratic order. The theoretical function of restrictions is to maintain that reliable communication process where, for example, special circumstances, threats of violence and certain types of information were seen as examples of situations where the process could be in danger. The empirical result was largely in line with the theoretical conclusions. The ability to argue and keep open debates was seen as important building blocks in a democratic society and therefore implies the benefits of a reliable communication process. Justification for the restrictions was made with regard to harmful information, threatening circumstances and xenophobic organizations, who were examples of counter-productive expressions to the democratic order. However, the study showed that parliamentary motions and the Swedish Helsinki Committee often focused their justifications on different fundamental views which partly could be explained by the concepts of positive and negative freedom and the perception of minority rights. The findings indicated that the issue of restrictions on freedom of speech is extremely complex because of the varied opinions in the drafting of the law of hate speech. The dilemma of freedom of expression can therefore be seen as relevant up to this day.

Efeitos sequenciais do treinamento aeróbio sobre a microcirculação muscular esquelética, cardíaca e renal em ratos hipertensos espontâneos / Sequential effects of aerobic training on microcirculation of skeletal muscle, heart and kidney in hypertensive spontaneously rats

Tatiana Pereira Alves 13 March 2014 (has links)
A partir dos resultados obtidos, podemos dizer que alterações estruturais da microcirculação antecedem a melhora dos níveis pressóricos de hipertensos e ainda, são capazes de proporcionar melhoras vasculares aos normotensos / Previous observations have shown that aerobic training reduce the wall/lumen ratio (RW/L) of skeletal muscle arterioles and reduce mean arterial pressure (MAP) in hypertensive rats, cause bradycardia, and increase capillary and venular density also in hypertensive and normotensive rats after 13 weeks of training. We investigated simultaneously the time-course changes of arterioles remodeling, MAP, HR and capillary and venular density during the development of low-intensity exercise protocol. Normotensive rats (WKY, Wistar Kyoto) and spontaneously hypertensive (SHR), two-months old were submitted to aerobic training protocol (weeks 0, 1, 2, 4, 8 and 12) or remained sedentary (weeks 0 and 12). In each study time were measured the MAP and HR and collected heart, kidney, temporalis, soleus and gastrocnemius muscles to analyze the RW/L and quantificate capillaries and venules (by Periodic Acid-Schiff staining). Aerobic training increased capillary and venular density of WKY and SHR (only in exercised territories), caused a reduction of the RW/L of skeletal muscle arterioles (only in SHR, early and in greater magnitude in exercised territories) and only then reduced MAP of SHR and HR of WKY and SHR. The structural changes of microcirculation preceded improvement of blood pressure levels in hypertensive rats and provided vascular improvements to normotensive rats

Alice and the Mad Hater : Hur sociala medier påverkar och möjliggör användares motstrategier vid bemötande av kränkande innehåll / Alice and the Mad Hater : How social media affect and enables counterstrategies on the reception of offensive content

Ahlgren Andersson, Ellen, Enecker, Maria January 2015 (has links)
With online communication being increasingly integrated with our everyday lives, internet hate has become a growing problem. This is receiving growing attention in the media and research. In recent years, scientists have begun to shift their focus from the hate itself, to responses to these forms of violation. However, research has been mainly solution orientated and for example focused on legal aspects. Thus, we maintain that the field lacks a media technology based analysis, which this paper intends to contribute to. The aim of this study is to investigate what impact design and functionality in social media has on its users, with relation to user’s counter-strategies on the reception of offensive content. Note that this study is restricted to social media, and not focused on digital media at large. Within the framework of this essay, we have conducted three focus-group interviews and nethnographic studies. The empirical data from our focus groups has determined which social media platforms we examined in the nethnographic study, and subsequently in our analysis. The collected data has been analysed in relation to previous research on social media and internet hate. We have also used theories on resistance, suppression techniques, space of possible actions, norms and the relationship between offline/online and front stage/back stage. The analysis has resulted in five themes that describe the following key findings: 1) social media's positive connotations are problematic in relation to offensive content, but the receivers of internet hate are inventive in working around embedded norms, 2) sometimes no response is the best defence, 3) the culture around the like-function has a significant role in the resistance to internet hate on social media, 4) the shrinking distance between the world online and offline, as well as public and private rooms, affects everyday resistance to violations on social media, and 5) production of positive content and interaction with help of built-in functions are perceived as ways to affect the climate and cooperative resistance. We do not purport to provide technical or design-related proposals for development. However, we believe that our results, among other things, can be used for future development and improvement of social media platforms, and as a basis for further research on resistance to violations on social media.

Exploring the nature of oppression as experienced by people with learning disabilities

Jeyacheya, D. Z. January 2015 (has links)
Aim: The principal aim of this qualitative research study is to gain a clearer understanding of oppression as experienced by People with Learning Disabilities (PWLD). In particular, this study investigated: 1) the nature of oppression - the typical kinds of oppression PWLD face during the course of their everyday lives; 2) the causes of their oppressive experiences: 3) the impact these oppressive experiences can have on their quality of life; and 4) their reaction - the strategies PWLD employ to prevent further oppression. Rationale: Despite policies of deinstitutionalisation since the 1980s, many PWLD have not found social integration easy and continue to endure oppressive experiences in community-based settings. The nature/extent of this social problem has often been overlooked by researchers and practitioners. Methods: This research was conducted using interpretive phenomenology as a methodology; an approach which influenced the study’s design, method of data collection and strategy for analysing the rich qualitative findings. Semi-structured interviews were carried out across two sample populations; a group of PWLD (N=11) and a group of community-based practitioners/carers (N=11). The participants were selected through purposive sampling and the qualitative data was analysed using a specific Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) process. Findings: PWLD remain a deeply oppressed social group. Respondents reported experiencing multiple forms of oppression, which seem to interact in complex ways and be present throughout the course of their lives. The two key super-ordinate themes (most dominant forms of oppression experienced by PWLD) emerging from the process of IPA appear to be: 1) The life-long effects of marginalisation (social exclusion, powerlessness and existing as a socio-economic underclass) and 2) Multiple forms of victimisation (coping with exploitation, intimidation and abuse, both overt and subtle, from the public, family members and at times practitioners). Respondents believe that the underlying cause of their oppressive experiences is society’s negative perception. Negative attitudes and beliefs arise from oppressive social forces such as: the use of diagnostic labels, segregated special needs education and limited opportunities for employment. These are experiences which respondents assert often do little more than spoil their social identity as human beings. Conclusion: The findings confirm that PWLD living in the community continue to encounter negative social experiences which are pervasive. This research attempts to draw together and make sense of these experiences in terms of the concept of oppression. Through gaining a clearer understanding of the marginalised and victimised status of PWLD policy makers will be more informed about how to respond to their social and economic needs, and in turn help alleviate their experiences of oppression.
