SUCCESS, FOLLY, AND FAILURE: SOME PAULINE JUDGEMENTS REGARDING THE FORMATION OF CHRISTIAN SOCIAL IDENTITY

Conroy, Joshua D. 03 1900 (has links)
This thesis seeks to answer questions regarding Paul’s understanding of Christian identity by arguing that Paul views Christian identity as a superordinate or New Human identity in which many previous identities persist as subordinate identities, transformed by the superordinate Christian identity—although some previous identities must cease as they are not compatible with the superordinate Christian identity. Utilizing the combined approaches of Social Identity Theory and Self-Categorization Theory, I describe the perspectives that Paul presents in his correspondence with the Thessalonians, Galatians and Corinthians. As regards the Thessalonians, Paul observes that the Thessalonians succeeded in adopting Christian identity. In comparison, the Galatians, while recognizing their need for transforming their subordinate identities, are foolishly attempting to adopt a Judean identity. Finally, Paul rebukes the Corinthians for failing to appropriately adopt Christian identity and for choosing instead to continue to live according to their Old Human identity. / Thesis / Master of Arts (MA)

Alien Encounters and the Alien/Human Dichotomy in Stanley Kubrick‘s <em>2001: A Space Odyssey</em> and Andrei Tarkovsky‘s </em>Solaris<em>

Cavedo, Keith 01 April 2010 (has links)
The alien encounter has long been a defining and popular subject of science fiction cinema. However, Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) and Andrei Tarkovsky's Solaris (1972) are interrogative, complex, and distinct artistic accomplishments that stand apart from and above the conventional science fiction film. 2001 and Solaris not only represent but complicate the alien/human dichotomy; in the end, they destabilize the dichotomy and even suggest a radical synthesis of the dichotomous elements. 2001 and Solaris further emphasize epistemological and specifically anthropocentric limitations when it comes to understanding the alien or attempting to make sense of the alien encounter. Chapter 1 introduces the alien/human dichotomy in two representative science fiction films of the period, This Island Earth (1955) and Planet of Storms (1962). Chapter 1 provides some contextual and contrapuntal basis for the originality of 2001 and Solaris. Chapter 2 reviews critical literature directly and indirectly addressing alien and human identity, interpretations of symbolic forms such as the monolith in 2001 and "guests" in Solaris, and both films' ambiguous, multivalent endings. Chapter 3 (on 2001) and Chapter 4 (on Solaris) examine the alien/human dichotomy in specific scenes where an alien, non-human presence appears to be present or where an alien encounter significantly occurs. The two chapters analyze techniques such as the significance of the establishing shot and other shots or cinematographic effects, settings, point of view, and non-diegetic music. By way of conclusion, Chapter 5 compares 2001 and Solaris and makes the argument for the differences between-and departures from-the two film masterpieces and conventional science fiction films. Chapter 5 ends with further considerations of the argument and a broadening of the context. This dissertation should be of interest not only to science fiction scholarship in general but to film studies in particular. It aims to provide a sophisticated reading of 2001: A Space Odyssey and Solaris supported by recent criticism in an effort to join in the ongoing scholarly discussion and critical legitimatization of science fiction cinema.

'The Lebanese Way': Hybridization and Cultural Peacebuilding Through 'Interfaces and Interchanges' Across the Peacekeeper-Local Divide

Cassin, Katelyn 16 September 2022 (has links)
United Nations (UN) peacekeeping operations are regularly evaluated and critiqued by both scholars and policy-makers, however this scrutiny is commonly restricted to program- and project-level effects. This neglects the unique impacts that emerge from the individuals who populate interventions and those they encounter in conflict-affected communities. The objective of this research is to place these individuals, and their actions and relationships, at the centre of analysis and investigate their impacts independent of, or distinct from, program-level effects. Through the case study of south Lebanon and the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), this dissertation explores the social and physical spaces that connect peacekeepers and Lebanese individuals in the course of their everyday lives and actions. Through the theoretical lenses of cultural peacebuilding and hybridity, I conceptualize the meaning of these relationships to the individuals involved, to the UNIFIL mission, and to peace at a broader level. This political ethnography undertakes a complex, relational approach to understanding intervention impacts and effectiveness, thereby 'peopling' a UN peacekeeping operation. Based on original empirical data consisting of 82 ethno-biographical interviews with Lebanese individuals and UNIFIL veterans, alongside 14 months of participant and field observation, I argue that Lebanese people agentially transform superficial, formal encounters with peacekeepers into substantial, impactful relationships through the Lebanese culture of hospitality. In informal, private and local spaces and contexts, 'thick' identities are enacted and cultural exchange occurs, which transforms and hybridizes the knowledges and identities of both peacekeepers and Lebanese people. Through this process of hybridization, interlocutors emerge who facilitate the connections of others in their social networks and function as bridges across the international-local divide. This hybridization augments UNIFIL's access to local knowledge, which improves local support and operational effectiveness. Further, the relationships and connections between peacekeepers and Lebanese people contribute to the restoration or amelioration of Lebanese human identity needs, which are threatened by the conflict with Israel and the ways in which it intersects with intrastate tensions. This constitutes incremental change productive to complex pathways toward peace in south Lebanon.

Arda, Zeynep 28 November 2011 (has links)

Utilização de imagens tridimensionais da cavidade sinusal frontal provenientes de tomografia computadorizada de feixe cônico para a identificação forense / Usage of tridimensional cone beam computed tomography imaging of the frontal sinus for human identifications in Forensic Scienses

Duailibi Neto, Eduardo Felippe 06 July 2016 (has links)
The uniqueness of the frontal sinus cavity is an important factor for establishing human identity. The usage of imaging records of this cavity for human identity is a secondary methodology according to the INTERPOL protocols. Recent advances in imaging technologies have enabled the three-dimensional imaging records of this cavity. Our goal was to validate the methodology proposed by Beaini et al. (2015), by developing standardized criteria for the use of cone beam computed tomography three-dimensional images of the front sinus and evaluating the ability of these data for human identification. The aim of this study was to investigate a total of 200 imaging records from randomized patients that were analyzed by three observers. Images were exported in DICOM format and underwent two distinct segmentation processes and a three-dimensional overlap. The Beaini et al. (2015) technique was applied to establish identification of the randomized patients. My results showed a significant difference between both segmentation processes, with manual segmentation showing the best results. Beaini et al. (2015) technique was validated and a total of 166 patients were identified. The volume of the sinus cavity has a high identification probability with a rough probability of 85% to determine the sex of individuals.

No. of bitstreams: 1 AnaMariaKiyan.pdf: 575639 bytes, checksum: f99601dbbf306b23a190d86ddec4e2f5 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2005-06-28 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / The present research is aimed to analyze the metamorphosis in identity (Ciampa, 1996) of the priests who belong to the Roman Apostolic Catholic Church, by giving a special consideration to the celibacy as a meaningful element in the identity policy (Ciampa, 2002) of the institution concerning its clergy, both from the discipline and dogma point of views, all with a social psychology approach. Although the major concern of the research is to talk over the present situation, understanding the process that has set the ecclesiastic celibacy along Catholic Church history is necessary. Thus, the set up of celibacy will be mentioned only to clarify the way it works. Hence, it is a study with no theological basis. The research procedures were contextualized surveys on the historical/social aspects where the situation develops as well as a collection and further analysis of interviews carried out with priests and/or former priests who were for and against the practice of celibacy, with their lives later analyzed under a social psychology approach.

Discursive Horizons of Human Identity and Wilderness in Postmodern Environmental Ethics: A Case Study of the Guadalupe Mountains of Texas

Hood, Robert L. (Robert Leroy) 05 1900 (has links)
Using a genealogy of the narratives of the Guadalupes, I explore three moral identities. The Mescalero Apache exist as caretakers of sacred space. Spanish and Anglo settlers exist as conquerors of a hostile land. The park service exists as captives, imprisoned in the belief that economic justifications can protect the intrinsic value of wilderness. The narrative shift from oral to abstract text-based culture entails a shift from intrinsic to instrumental valuation. I conclude that interpretation of narratives, such as those of the Guadalupes, is not by itself a sufficient condition for change. Interpretation is, however, a necessary condition for expanding the cultural conversation beyond merely instrumental justifications to include caring for wilderness's intrinsic values.

Utilização de imagens tridimensionais da cavidade sinusal frontal provenientes de TCFC para determinar dimorfismo sexual entre indivíduos / Use of three-dimensional images of the frontal sinus cavity from CBCT to determine sexual dimorphism between individuals

Choi, Isabela Goulart Gil 08 December 2016 (has links)
There were few studies to assess the ability of the cavity of the frontal sinuses for sexual differentiation. However, the prediction of the sex of the individuals is the most important step in the development of a reliable biological profile during analysis of skeletal remains. The advent of cone beam computed tomography brought a number of advantages to the dental clinic, and the number of patients undergoing CT scans for diagnostic purposes has increased increasingly allowing that these data are useful for forensic identification purposes. The study aimed to propose a new methodology to assess the 3D images capacity of the frontal sinus cavity, from computed tomography cone beam, to attribute sexual dimorphism between individuals. The survey sample consisted of 130 exams (65 male and 65 female) who were reconstructed three-dimensionally. The 3D volume was exported in Tiff format in the frontal, side and basal views. In addition, the following variables were measured in a second program: area, perimeter, bounding rectangle, ellipse fit, circularity, aspect ratio, roundness, solidity and Feret\'s diameter. The study was able to demonstrate the existence of sexual dimorphism with an accuracy of the final logistic regression model equal to 80.0%. The basal view assured greater explanatory power in the final equation. The methodology has been validated and the results showed a high degree of reliability.

O processo de constituição da identidade humana e o trabalho da universidade neste processo: um estudo com alunos do curso de serviço social da PUC/SP / The process of constitution of the human identity and the role of the university in this process: a study with students of the social service course at PUC/SP

Padilha, Augusta 27 November 2009 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-04-28T20:58:06Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Augusta Padilha.pdf: 742104 bytes, checksum: d2dc0efa61e1ad78acf33f29d45d5c85 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-11-27 / This research encompasses a study about the process of constitution of human identity. From the theoretical perspective of Ciampa, based on the historicdialectic materialism, life history narratives of undergraduate students are studied. Such universe is first of all taken as source of reference of activities and experiences assimilated along their lives, thus serving as reference to the understanding of the process of constitution of their identities. The study seeks to apprehend this process, based on the conception of the socio-historic man and of identity as a metamorphosis process. Through these life histories, the process of development of specifically human aptitudes and the human sense named conscience are analyzed. Under the light of the conceptions from the socio-historic psychology, the qualitative transformation of the conscience through embedded factors that are internal and external to men is studied, particularly in what refers to identity. For this reason, research extends to the analysis of form and content of what the students think and how they express their thoughts as narratives, considering these as the objectivation of capacities or acquisitions implied in their academic activities. We then come to the analysis of elaborations of the students and to the interactions that sustain such elaborations. Consequently, we come to the work of the Social Service Course at PUC/SP and to the implication of this work in the process of constitution of the identity of its students, in this study, represented by two of them. By focusing on the identity process as metamorphosis, research is centered in the relationship established between course-student, grounded on the pedagogic project of the course and on the professional profile it proposes. As a result of this study, the effectiveness of a process of constitution of human identities was evidenced, considering that a determined proposal of undergraduate teaching and determined kinds of learning produce movements in the identity of the students, participants of this research. That is, it is possible to organize revolutionary teaching under the capitalist roof / Esta pesquisa constitui-se num estudo sobre o processo de constituição da identidade humana.
