Las crecientes preocupaciones sobre el cambio climático y una creciente crisis ecológica se están volviendo cada vez más visibles en la literatura de diferentes géneros, especialmente en la literatura postapocalíptica y "cli-fi" (literatura sobre cambio climático). Reconociendo que el desastre ecológico afecta a las mujeres de manera desproporcionada, esta tesina emplea un análisis literario ecofeminista para examinar dos novelas en las que la trama principal está impulsada por una crisis ecológica causada por la contaminación. Más específicamente, esta tesina investiga la novela Mugre Rosa de Fernanda Trías (2021) y la novela Noxa de María Inés Krimer (2016), para descubrir qué estrategias utilizan las protagonistas femeninas para enfrentar sus situaciones peligrosas y cómo esto moldea su agencia desde un punto de vista ecofeminista. La tesis encuentra que las protagonistas de ambas novelas emplean varias estrategias para sobrevivir y a veces resistir la crisis ecológica que las rodea, pero también muestran momentos de apatía, rabia e inacción. Hay diferencias significativas entre las novelas, donde la protagonista de Noxa es retratada como más activa en la lucha contra la crisis y la protagonista de Mugre Rosa es más apática y furiosa. Esto se discute luego en términos de agencia transcorpórea y vulnerabilidad insurgente (Alaimo 2008, 2009). Finalmente, la tesina también discute de qué manera estas representaciones pueden transmitir unas preocupaciones ecofeministas al lector. Argumenta que muchas preocupaciones ecofeministas son visibles en ambas novelas, que van desde una crítica al capitalismo patriarcal hasta el control de los cuerpos femeninos, pasando por cuestiones de maternidad y monstruosidad, hasta finalmente la relación entre los seres humanos y la naturaleza. Esto demuestra la necesidad de un análisis más profundo de las preocupaciones ecológicas en la literatura, lo cual es probable que se vuelva cada vez más presente en estos tiempos. / Rising concerns about climate change and a mounting ecological crisis are becoming increasingly visible in literature of different genres, especially in post-apocalyptic and ‘cli-fi’ literature. Recognising that ecological disaster often disproportionally affects women, this thesis employs an ecofeminist literary analysis to examine two such novels where the main plot is driven by an ecological crisis caused by pollution. More specifically, this thesis investigates the novel Mugre Rosa by Fernanda Trías (2021) and the novel Noxa by María Inés Krimer (2016), to find out what strategies the female protagonists use to confront their perilous situations and how this shapes their agency from an ecofeminist standpoint. The thesis finds that protagonists in both novels employ various strategies to survive and sometimes resist the ecological crisis that surrounds them, but also show moments of apathy, rage and inaction. There are significant differences between novels, where the protagonist of Noxa is portrayed as more active in fighting against the crisis and the protagonist of Mugre Rosa is more apathetic and raging. This is then discussed in terms of transcorporeal agency and insurgent vulnerability (Alaimo 2008, 2009). Finally, the thesis also discusses in what ways these representations can convey ecofeminist concerns to readers. It argues that many ecofeminist concerns are visible in both novels, ranging from a criticism of patriarchal capitalism to the control of female bodies to issues of maternity and monstrosity to finally the relationship between humans and nature. This shows a need for further analysis of ecological concerns in literature, which is likely to become ever more present in these times.

[pt] Esta dissertação de mestrado tem como objeto de investigação as práticas
pedagógicas de professores que ensinam matemática nos anos iniciais do Ensino
Fundamental de forma a superar as práticas tradicionais hegemônicas. A partir de
uma investigação qualitativa utilizando recursos inspirados na metodologia história
de vida, foram realizadas entrevistas com quatro professores polivalentes que atuam
nos anos iniciais do Ensino Fundamental e lecionam matemática com práticas não
tradicionais. O objetivo principal da investigação foi entender de que forma suas
trajetórias pessoais, formativas e profissionais foram atravessadas pelo ensino de
matemática e de que maneira essas trajetórias transformaram suas práticas docentes.
Em diálogo com autores como Nóvoa, Goodson, Candau e Boaler, os resultados da
pesquisa, dentro de suas limitações metodológicas, apontaram que a capacidade dos
professores entrevistados de romper com as práticas ditas tradicionais e apresentar
práticas docentes insurgentes está ligada a sua atuação como professor pesquisador,
evidenciando o caráter reflexivo de sua prática. Dessa forma, o rompimento com as
práticas tradicionais está conectado com o fato desses professores não serem
especialistas em matemática, mas sim conhecedores da profissão docente. / [en] This dissertation investigates the pedagogical practices of teachers who teach mathematics in the early years of elementary school to overcome hegemonic traditional practices. Based on qualitative research using resources inspired by the life history methodology, interviews were conducted with four polyvalent teachers who work in the early years of elementary school and teach mathematics using non-traditional practices. The main objective of the research was to understand how their personal, formative, and professional trajectories were influenced by the teaching of mathematics and how these trajectories transformed their teaching practices. In dialogue with authors such as Nóvoa, Goodson, Candau, and Boaler, the research results, within their methodological limitations, indicated that the ability of the interviewed teachers to break away from traditional practices and present insurgent teaching practices is linked to their role as teacher-researchers, highlighting the reflective nature of their practice. Thus, the break with traditional practices is connected to the fact that these teachers are not mathematics specialists but rather knowledgeable about the teaching profession.

United States counter-narcotics policies towards Burma, and how the illegal myanmar regime is manipulating those policies to commit ethnic genocide.Hochstedler, Robert. 06 1900 (has links)
US counter-narcotic policies towards Burma have possessed a singular-focus. In other words, they have been based on the traditional bilateral triumvirate strategies of eradication, education, and interdiction. Eradicate the crops used to produce illicit narcotics, interdict the flow of illicit drug traffickers, and educate the general population on the dangers of continual drug usage. In the country of Burma though, there are other US policies which also have a singular focus, which have undermined the effectiveness of these policies. Since the Burmese military regime's brutal suppression of the pro-democracy movement in 1988, the US has severed all economic relations with the country. The Burmese economy, which was already far from stable, fell into a downward spiral as a result of these US-led policies. This did not result in a democratic transition. Over seventeen years since these economic sanctions have been in place, the US has not achieved a peaceful regime change in Burma. Furthermore, the attempts to remove the significant flow of illicit narcotics from the country have failed as well. The reason these two singular-oriented policies have failed is that they are targeted at a country much more complex than these strategies have been designed to handle. First of all, there are 135 ethnicities in Burma, while only a small portion of the Burman population maintains political and economic control. Although this would result in ineffective policies with little collateral impact, the ruling Tatmadaw regime has manipulated these policies to commit ethnic genocide upon the ethnic minorities within their territory. Unless a re-assessment of these policies is undertaken by the US and its allies, the only result of their policies will be the elimination of millions of ethnic minorities in this totalitarian state. Therefore, the US must re-assess its position of isolating the Myanmar regime, and focus on a policy of engagement. Only if a structured and progressive incentive policy of economic development is created in conjunction with the regime, can the separate triumvirate policies of counter-narcotics against the ethnic minorities in Burma become effective. / US Navy (USN) author.

Both Temple and Tomb is a dissertation in two parts. The first part is an examination and analysis of a collection of 'colonial' sculptures on permanent display in the Royal Museum of Central Africa in Tervuren Belgium. The second part is a reflection on the author's own paintings, drawings and film and an examination of the critical potential of these images in challenging the colonial narratives of the RMCA.
Part I presents two arguments. The first is that European aesthetic codes have been used to legitimize the conquest of the Congo and to award sanction to a voyeuristic gaze. The second is that the organization of the sculptures of Africans (and European females) into carefully managed spaces and relationships results in the creation of erotically-charged formations that are intended to afford pleasure to male European spectators.
Part II examines the strategies used in Re-Turning the Shadows to disrupt (neo)colonial patterns of viewing that have become ritual and 'naturalized'. Reordering of Meaningful Worlds : Memory of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists and the Ukrainian Insurgent Army in Post-Soviet UkraineYurchuk, Yuliya January 2014 (has links)
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Ukrainian society faced a new reality. The new reality involved consolidation and transformation of collective identities. The reinvigoration of national identity led to a change in the emphasis on how the past was dealt with – many things which were regarded as negative by the Soviet regime became presented as positive in independent Ukraine. The war-time nationalist movement, represented by the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) and the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), became one of the re-configured themes of history. While most of the studies of memory of the OUN and UPA concentrated on the use of this history by nationalist parties, this study goes beyond the analysis and scrutinizes the meaning of this history in nation- and state-building in relation to memory work realized on the small-scale regional and local levels. Moreover, this book focuses not only on the “producers” of memory, but also on the “consumers” of memory, the area which is largely understudied in the field of memory studies. Drawing on studies about post-colonial subjectivities and theories of remediation developed in memory studies, this book explores the changes in memory culture of contemporary Ukraine and examines the role of memory in producing new meanings under the rapidly changing conditions after the collapse of the Soviet Union up to 2014. The book contributes to the studies of memory culture in post-Communist countries as well as to the studies of society in contemporary Ukraine.

Moreover, this book focusses not only on the “producers” of memory, but also on the “consumers” of memory, the area which is largely understudied in the field of memory studies. In the book the main emphasis is put on monuments which are regarded as catalysts and symptoms of memory. The present study showed that the OUN and UPA are used more as the metaphors of the anti-Soviet and anti-communist struggle for independence than as historical entities. This past is largely mythologized. Functioning as a myth the memory of the OUN and UPA obliterates difficult knowledge that the historical research reveals on the questionable activities and ideology of those organizations. As a result, the past of the OUN and UPA is re-imagined, re-filled with new meanings so that it is used along even with the democratic and pro-European claims in the present. It was especially well-observed during the Orange Revolution in 2004 and during the Euromaidan in 2013-2014, when the European Union’s flags were seen next to the OUN’s red-and-black flags or when the pro-European slogans were proclaimed alongside the OUN and UPA slogans. At the same time, the results demonstrated an intricate complexity of memory work shaped by intensive dynamics of private and public, grassroots and official, local and national encounters. Although there have been attempts made by political actors to draw a direct link between the national identity, political allegiances and proposed heroic version of memory, the study showed, that such attempts did not really work. In the pluralistic context the meanings are too fluid and adherence to one version of history does not preclude adherences to other versions of history which are presented as diametrically opposite in the political sphere. As result, on the recipients’ grassroots level, the memory reveals its amalgamated characteristics. Drawing on studies about post-colonial subjectivities and theories of remediation developed in memory studies, this book explores the changes in memory culture of contemporary Ukraine and examines the role of memory in producing new meanings under the rapidly changing conditions after the collapse of the Soviet Union up to 2014. The book contributes to the studies of memory culture in post-Communist countries as well as to the studies of society in contemporary Ukraine.

Low Intensity Conflict: Contemporary Approaches and Strategic ThinkingSearle, Deane January 2007 (has links)
Low Intensity Conflict (LIC) is a significant feature of the contemporary world and it is a particular challenge to the armed forces of many states which are involved is such conflict, or are likely to become so. This thesis is not concerned with how such difficult conflict situations arise. Rather it is concerned with how, from the point of view of the state, they may be contained and ultimately brought to a satisfactory resolution. The work is thus concerned with the practicalities of ending LIC. More specifically, the purpose of this research is to establish a framework of doctrinal and military principles applicable to the prevention and resolution of LIC. The principles of this thesis are based in numerous historical examples of LIC and six in depth case studies. These distilled principles are analysed in two central chapters, and are then applied in two latter defence force chapters so as to ensure there practicality and resilience. Numerous defence academics and military practitioners have been consulted in the production of this thesis; their contribution has further reinforced the functionality of the principles examined in this research. The research illustrates the criticality of a holistic approach to LIC. The function of this approach is to guarantee the stability of the sovereign state, by unifying civil, police, intelligence and military services. The effectiveness of the military elements must also be ensured, as military force is central to the suppression of LIC. Consequently, the research makes strategic and operational prescriptions, so as to improve the capability of defence forces that are concerned with preventing or resolving LIC.
