A Bright Point in a Dull Day: A Qualitative Exploration of Middle School Students’ Perceptions of Music Ensemble Participation

Amburgey, Kailee 01 May 2024 (has links) (PDF)
Music participation, specifically in an ensemble setting, is known to promote learning and social skills and to contribute to a well-rounded overall education. With this in mind, this qualitative, constructivist grounded theory study explored the impacts that participating in chorus, band, or orchestra has on students’ overall experience in middle school, with a focus on joy and identity development. The researcher interviewed fifteen students about their personal experiences and feelings about their lives as middle schoolers and musicians. The findings, shared in six theoretical concepts tied to the research question, reveal important facets of these students’ experiences that shed light on the value of music education and ensemble opportunities at the middle school level. The discourse shared by the participants communicates to educators and other stakeholders how critical music is to their individual and school lives, and how different the experience might be without it.

The Joys of Gardening

Shah, Jasmine Rajesh 09 December 2021 (has links)
The Joys of Gardening is a virtual experience in which the viewers are invited to roam and explore a garden maze scattered with features including a greenhouse, a fountain, a gazebo, and a variety of personal gardening videos. One of the main attractions includes an opportunity to interact with a tomato plant and observe different stages of its growth. These elements combined are essential to the piece's purpose: to spread the passion and joys of gardening. There are many therapeutic effects to gardening such as: the sun helps people be happy, working with the soil allows a sense of giving life, and watching a plant grow can inspire the joy of gardening and the joy of discovery. As the viewer inhabits the space, they are engulfed into a world of butterflies, birds chirping, and serene lighting. This experience has a set aesthetic, narrative, and user interaction. By utilizing these elements, they are able to enjoy a relaxing stroll through the maze. This paper will discuss the influence behind the experience, stylistic choices, and user interactions. This experience continues to explore the potentials of blending the physical landscape and the digital landscape. / Master of Fine Arts / The Joys of Gardening is a virtual experience that provides the viewer an opportunity to explore a garden maze. Musikvideor inom konstvetenskaplig tolkning II : Med fokus på jämförande analyser / Music videos within art science II : With focus on comparative analysis

Östberg, Frida January 2020 (has links)
This essay starts out in the world of art science looking out through the glasses of Anne D’Allevas analysis of performance and videoart, digital art and Roland Bathes Semiotics. By using Meta narratives and Popular culture we will examine how one music video and one video artwork lives in the same sphere. The point of this essay is to raise awareness of how popular culture is viewed both within, but also outside of the academic world. This essays will thoroughly analyze and discuss the differences that can be discovered when comparing music videos to video art. By connecting these findings to meta narratives we will uncover cultural and time specific traits, temporalities and narrative-structures.

A study of the relations between the human and the animal in We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves by Karen Joy Fowler

Ekelund, Maria January 2022 (has links)
The purpose of the thesis is to examine how the relation between human and animal is depicted in the contemporary realistic literature and to discuss contradictory ethical aspects of the Western view of animals. Using Animal Studies, the analysis of the novel We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves by Karen Joy Fowler questions the prevailing norms around the view of animals in our society. Fowler’s novel illustrates how a close relationship with another animal can create compassion for other living beings, influence the choices we make and may change the way we act. By reducing the distance between species, humans can develop a stronger understanding for animals and start to question norms and outdated ideas about exploiting animals. Fowler’s novel shows that the differences between species concerns behavior rather than designation, which opens up for a discussion about multi-species. It is clear that language lacks the ability to reflect the richness and complexity of reality when it comes to identity.

A queer phenomenological study on trans joy through the concept of trans failure

Thelin Schmidt, My January 2023 (has links)
In this thesis, the author explores what trans joy can be, and how it manifests in trans people’s everyday lives. Sara Ahmed’s theoretical framework Queer Phenomenology (2006) along with B Lee Aultman’s Trans Phenomenology (2018) directs the analysis towards an epistemological understanding of transness and trans joy. The limits and possibilities of trans joy are understood through its interaction with, and deviation from hegemonic binary gender norms that marginalize trans folks. Together with Jack Halberstam’s concept of The Queer Art of Failure (2011) and Ace Lehner’s trans-focused concept Trans Failure (2022), the study shows how failing to accomplish the cisnormative script is in fact something positive. Embracing one's true gender identity becomes a liberating experience.

Some lexemes associated with the concept of JOY in Biblical Hebrew : a cognitive linguistic investigation

Megahan, Michael Larry 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis(PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2012 / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Theories of lexical semantics have undergone an evolutionary development for centuries. Geeraerts (2010) has traced their development from the historical-philological era (circa 1880) until the early 21st century. The current situation finds two basic approaches to lexical studies, with scholars positioned on a continuum from a minimalist position to a maximalist position. The former makes a demarcation between linguistics and pragmatics, relegating word meaning to pragmatics and a separation of word knowledge from world knowledge. The latter argues that there can be no separation made between lexical meaning and contextual meaning (word knowledge and world knowledge). The study is based on insights from the maximalist perspective. Second, it proposes that it is necessary to approach semantical studies with a composite approach taking into consideration frames, conceptual metaphor and metonymy, prototype, Idealized Cognitive Models, grammar and figurative uses of language (including non-verbal expressions and symbolic gestures) in order to have a full understanding of the concept a word or expression symbolizes. Third, all of the occurrences of a word or expression that appear in a corpus are analyzed in order to determine a possible range of polysemy as it is expressed in actual language usage. Finally, the context of the research is Bible Translation. One question asked in the investigation is, what information gleaned from the composite model can be appropriately presented in a specialist bilingual lexicon based on a frame model? The results of the research using the eclectic model provided a very broad understanding of some of the lexemes associated with JOY in biblical Hebrew. It was determined that these lexemes were associated with a concept of JOY that was very similar to the five-stage EVENT STRUCTURE metaphor proposed by Kövecses (2010) for emotions in English. Second, the investigation was able to verify the core features of JOY—volition, desire, determination and satisfaction—and to indicate how different construal operations activated specific features of the meaning potential in each linguistic frame. Third, the differences and similarities of each of the specific lexemes that were studied were determined and described. Fourth, it was demonstrated how the appropriate information needed by translators could be described and suggested for entry into a bilingual (biblical Hebrew-English) lexicon designed specifically for Bible Translators.

Religion especially marks the struggles for survival, the conquest of the land, and better conditions for life. Indigenous people show how the relationship to the land is profound and logical like the relationship to the Creator. The African Negroes procured divine attunement and return to roots. The Canudos movement is a search for faithfulness to God's law in contrast to Satan's. In the land struggle and the equitable distribution of income, the CPT (Pastoral Land Commission) and the MST (Landless Peasant Movement) endeavour to make use of this mysticism. Religious motivation is always present in the movements of land resistance and conquest. Deut 26, 5-11 is a Biblical text that forms part of a larger whole: the feast of the first fruits, and signalizes that, even in an accumulative process, there exists a counter reaction. Such was the case with Hezechias and, especially, Josiah in their opposition to political and religious concentration. The Biblical text shows that the State didn't totally win the battle, for there are references to resistance that survive in the political-religious reform ceremony. In the modern era it is very opportune to read Deut 26,5-11 and sing popular community liberation hymns seeing that land and income continue to be monopolized. Liberation Hymns invite all to resist and take possession of the land. The struggle is all encompassing as should joy.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Fernanda Toledo Macedo.pdf: 1548980 bytes, checksum: 53aa2e66ecab573490544ac134e9f03b (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-10-09 / This research analyzes the elements of the discourse of the magazine NEW / Cosmopolitan. The analysis focuses on the participation of the superego in the statements of the magazine , considering how this instance of the psychic apparatus , which is articulated in conjunction with the feelings of drive (mostly death ) and " Rules" relentless search for pleasure - agreed by Lacan as an imperative jouissance - is present in contemporary society, orchestrating various discourses of consumption, where the slogan is " be happy " and " consume " . We examined the construction of statements of publication, targeted for the theme of happiness (directly or indirectly ) within the parameters of Positive Psychology . The aim was to study how the text is constructed to not only entice readers , but to order and direct the enjoyment through consumption. The corpus consists of the issues from January 2005 to April 2013 of the magazine. The methodology used in the analysis is qualitative , exploratory and descriptive confronting theories about the consumer society , the construction of the individual in this picture and thinking how their fragmentation can influence the meaning of goods, made possible from the discourse of Positive Psychology . The authors underlying the study are : João Freire Filho , Algirdas J. Greimas , Sigmund Freud, Gilles Lipovetsky , Zymunt Bauman , Michel Foucault and Guy Debord , among others . The main concepts in the development of the research are : happiness, the imperative of enjoyment in the society of the spectacle and consumption, being articulated in a way that allow performing reflections about the identity of the brand NEW / Cosmopolitan as an authority recognized by your target audience, placed the role of holding the " know" that leads the reader to happiness ( and enjoyment ) . The starting point is the ephemeral nature of postmodern society as a basis for the construction of this editorial product as discursive device / Esta pesquisa analisa os elementos do discurso da revista NOVA/Cosmopolitan.
