Kierkegaard and the Longing for God

Graham, Glen A. 10 1900 (has links)

A large part of modern Western philosophy defines selfhood as the self’s ability to master itself and psychological wellbeing as the actualization of self-integration. However, as this thesis argues, Kierkegaard’s understanding of longing for God challenges this understanding human identity, especially as it is articulated by Kant and the German Idealists. Through an examination of Kierkegaard’s Concluding Unscientific Postscript and his religious discourses, the thesis argues that Kierkegaard’s theology of longing both undermines the modern psychology understanding of autonomous selfhood and preserves a qualified understanding of autonomy. The thesis argues that Kierkegaard’s theology has much in common with Augustine’s understanding of longing in The Confessions. For Kierkegaard, the longing for God is not just a heteronomous desire for self-annihilation in God. The longing in question is relational and intellectual; it is a response to God’s illuminative self-revelation and self-communicative love. But as relational, the life lived in longing for God is not wholly autonomous either. In prayer the soul experiences its own neediness and imperfections as it begins to experience God’s perfection. Broadly conceived, the thesis explores Kierkegaard’s understanding of this neither . . . nor . . . , that is, his understanding of a religious life lived neither fully autonomously nor fully heteronomously. The thesis argues further that much contemporary scholarship cannot take Kierkegaard’s relational understanding of the God-relationship seriously and therefore misinterprets his understanding of human identity.
/ Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Zelada Pierrend, Manuel Andrés 07 April 2016 (has links)

Roberge, Valérie 19 April 2018 (has links)

Adorno à S.A.

Lavoie, Mathieu 20 May 2021 (has links)

Den Stilla Anden : En jämförande studie av tålamodets teologi hos Søren Kierkegaard och St Peter av Damaskus / The Gentle Spirit : A comparative study of the theology of patience in Søren Kierkegaard and St Peter of Damascus

Sterner, Fredrik January 2024 (has links)
Diagnosing a contemporary societal lack in regards to the foundational virtue of patience, this comparative study of Søren Kierkegaard’s three upbuilding discourses To Gain One’s Soul in Patience, To Preserve One’s Soul in Patience and Patience in Expectancy (1844) is studied in relation to the work of St Peter of Damascus in the eastern orthodox writings of the Philokalia (12th century A.D.). The author seeks to trace differences and similarities in between the two authors, in order to explore the possible occurrence of a shared virtue ethic on the subject of patience, bridging east end west across history and church tradition. The thesis makes a brief historical presentation of the Philokalia, wherein it treats the practise of virtuous patience in the eastern orthodox tradition and lays out an outline of the thematic treatment of patience in the writings of St Peter of Damascus. It further presents a basic overview of Kierkegaardian theology in relation to patience before it explores the three discourses through a comparative analysis, followed by a discussion where similarities and differences are traced. Similarities are treated in a schematic manner under general themes of hesychia, man and God, patience and the virtues, discrimination, kenosis, the fragmentation of impatience, impatience and society and the ontological status of patience. Differences are traced to general historical and traditional contexts. The Philokalia, being as it is, intertwined within the orthodox ecclesiastical and traditional understanding, and Kierkegaard as a critical protestant searching for Christian roots. The thesis finishes with the conclusion that the main themes emerging in Kierkegaard’s three discourses on patience are broadly congruent with the writings of St Peter of Damascus in The Philokalia. The main differences found in between the two being those of historical, ecclesiastical and traditional nature.

The way to freedom in existential philosophy

Knob, Benjamin B. 01 January 2009 (has links)
Existentialism has come to be seen as championing human freedom. The yearning for freedom does indeed run throughout this tradition together with an anti-metaphysical sentiment which lends itself to the rejection of a determinism which views human beings as mechanisms. But it would be a mistake to think that an existentialist necessarily advocates the doctrine of free will. A distinction must be made between free will and the idea of freedom as it appears in the writings of the major existentialists. Free will is to commonly understood to be a requirement for moral accountability. It is the metaphysics, or what Freidrich Nietzsche would call "the mythology" behind every act of blaming a huinan being. Out of the four major existentialists-Soren Kierkegaard, Friedrich Nietzsche, Martin Heidegger, and Jean-Paul Sartre-Sartre is the only philosopher who seems to defend this metaphysics. "Existential Freedom," although compatible with the thesis of free will, does not necessitate it. Rather, it invites us to move beyond the guilt ridden ideas of responsibility associated with the moral subject, and embrace a grand responsibility for our future.

Deschênes, Jean-Guy 27 August 2021 (has links)

This study aims to examine some relevant concepts to an understanding of a philosophy of religion from the Søren Aabye Kierkegaard’s thought (1813-1855) as well as the interrelationship between them, taking as a central problematic relationship between particular human being and God. Although Kierkegaard's work is characterized by great complexity, this work rests on a conceptual axis capable of conferring a sense of unity to the whole of his writings: the relationship of the individual foundation in God in the existential process of becoming oneself. This procedure allows demonstrating the viability, from the standpoint of the science of religion, to read the construction of a philosophy of religion by Kierkegaard, from the conditions necessary for a human being effectively reach his individuality. The basic idea of this work is that, while every person is born as a human being, every person must become a self, an individual, because, according to Kierkegaard anthropology, individuality is not an a priori given, but the most specific human potentiality which can be accomplished only through the personal commitment. It corresponds to the highest human achievement in absolute dimension. Therefore, its possibility is linked to a relationship that God - the absolute - is its only grounding. Through this work, we can infer that Kierkegaard develops his own concept of religion that is not restricted to the cultic dimension or to a function of a social life. It is to understand human life as there is with God. The mode of existence in its necessary configuration according to the quality of the relationship established with God, is the fundamental feature of what one can understand to be the religion in Kierkegaard’s philosophy.

A critica de Kierkegaard a cristandade : o individuo e a comunidade

Paula, Marcio Gimenes de 16 May 2005 (has links)
Orientador : Oswaldo Giacoia Junior / Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Filosofia e Ciencias Humanas / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-04T06:20:19Z (GMT). O quarto capítulo pretende avaliar a polêmica kierkegaardiana contra a cristandade propriamente dita. The purpose of this research is to study the question concerning the individual and the community in Kierkegaard¿s works (1813-1855), specially in his criticism of Christendom. There is in this polemic a religiosous and theological face, but there is a philosophical criticism too, that can be better analysed second the perspective of philosophy of religion. The danish author is a post hegelian in his cronology and thematic. In this way, his interpretion is researched here, with these previous delimitations. The introduction give, second Karl Löwith¿s interpretation, the philosophical and historical context of the post hegelianism and his criticism on the question of Christendom (and Christianity). Kierkegaard is one of these thinkers. The first chapter analyses the problem concerning objective true in Christianity. This question is researched in the first part of Concluding Unscientific Post-Scriptum to Philosophical Fragments, where it is firstly proposed. The second chapter studies the question concerning the individual and the universal in Kierkegaard¿s works. The work analyses specially for this question is The Book on Adler. In the same way and thematic, the third chapter studies, in this discussion between individual and comunity in Kierkegaard¿s works, central questions of the Christianity: questions like martyr, apostle, genius and heroi. These problems will be analyses specially in Two Minor Ethico-religious essays and in the discurse The worries of the heathen. The fourth chapter analyses the polemic against the Christendom. The works specially researched here are the articles of The Fatherland, The Moment and the discourse The changelessness of God. The aim is to prove that the kierkegaardian polemic with the Christendom was a specially objective. This research is concluded, with the analyses of the dialetical relations between community and individual in Kierkegaard¿s works. Many Kierkegaard¿s works was used here. Otherwise, the aim of this research is to study in an organizated form, the Kierkegaard¿s conceptions, specially about his Christendom cristicism and his philosophy of religion / Doutorado / Filosofia / Doutor em Filosofia
