Pail, Daisy Batista 03 January 2012 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2015-04-14T13:38:33Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 437300.pdf: 1638924 bytes, checksum: bb50836ae78aa8adc3d233379daa581b (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-01-03 / In this paper, an interdisciplinary perspective of linguistic rhetoric has been proposed, predominantly pragmatic-inferential, the form has effect on the content, through discussion of politeness and cursing, using natural and digital dialogue, taken from social networking sites (Facebook, Youtube, Twitter), for illustration. Since both inferential processes, natural dialogue, politeness, swearing and social networking sites have heteromorphic elements, they are complex problems, hard to be treated in a disciplinary way and, therefore, to be argued that interdisciplinary approaches are more interesting. It was assumed, therefore, being the Metatheory of Interfaces (CAMPOS, 2004a, 2007a, 2007d), the external interfaces are between Linguistics, Cognition, Communication and Computing (with respect to the Web), while the interior is among morphology, syntax, lexicology, semantics and pragmatics. This study aimed to: i. demonstrate the importance of internal and external interfaces consistent for the study of social networks on the Internet, ii. describe politeness present in social networks via the inferential perspective (GRICE, 1991; LEVINSON, 2000; SPERBER & WILSON, 1995). iii. to illustrate the expressiveness of bad words through a pragmatic perspective of rhetoric, and iv. emphasize its value in interdisciplinary research ― for example, the link between language and emotion. Considering the importance pointed out by Pinker (2008) and others to study the "language as a window into human nature," it is argued that due to the location of common language and conscious thought to be concentrated in the neocortex, also linguistic politeness, being the result of rationalization (BROWN and LEVINSON, 1987; ESCANDELL-VIDAL, 1995), is in the same region. However, the taboo words appear in the limbic system (PINKER, 2008), thus presenting a more direct link with emotions and hence greater effectiveness in the expression of these. Given this difference and considering the principle of non-trivial connectivity (COSTA, in press), politeness and bad words were treated as a counterpoint and addressed predominantly in a perspective pragmatic-inferential, because if the semantics value is relatively the same, the pragmatic weight varies according to, for example, the intention and form. We chose to use dialogue taken from social networking sites because they have the possibility of huge corpus analysis, in which interactions are spontaneous. It has been corroborated that the rhetorical value of politeness and bad words is linked to the emotional aspect (PINKER, 2008; JAY, 2009).

These are undoubtedly important aspects of language. On the other hand, in order to be able to communicate efficiently the learner also needs to be familiar with the pragmatic aspects of language. Bearing this in mind, we will propose an analysis of two texts (one literary and other political). We will discuss Rhetoric considering it a subarea of Pragmatics and analyze its theoretical issues and application. Afterwards we will compare it to Speech Act and Conversational Implicature theories. The aim of this research is, then, to compare both theories and check if it is possible to work with both in the same analysis as complementary tools to promote a more complete analysis of texts and speeches. With the final considerations we intend to suggest for English as Additional Language (EAL) teaching, as well as for first language teaching, strategies aspiring to promote pragmatic awareness raising skills among students, being included the rhetorical awareness.

No. of bitstreams: 1 456600.pdf: 823022 bytes, checksum: 726c06369eb83f7ac15f66e42081ca5a (MD5) Previous issue date: 2014-01-13 / This work discusses upon natural language recursive phenomenon based on a bibliographic research carried out from the studies of Generative Grammar Theory by Noam Chomsky (1957). The notion of recursion is a polemic matter and it has been the subject of a great debate in recent literature (HAUSER, CHOMSKY AND FITCH, 2002; PINKER AND JACKENDOFF, 2005, among others) and there is not a consensus about its definition. It is speculated that the recursive syntactic component is not only to language faculty and, mainly, its universality is questioned. Thus, this research tries to elucidate the problematic issues presented above, starting with an overview of the various deployment that the concept of recursion presents with respect to its treatment in Cognitive Linguistic, making a historical route from Mathematics to language relation, followed by an investigation of the recursive nature of syntax and culminating with the relative recent claims about the centrality of recursion in Biolinguistic context.

Araujo, Daniela 28 February 2014 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 456592.pdf: 3097965 bytes, checksum: db5a757f286c715c53f6fa1f386aaa26 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2014-02-28 / The guiding interest of this thesis was to understand how the concept VIOLENCE emerges fromthe discourse of adolescents of different social groups in the urban areaof Porto Alegre. The overall objective was to investigate, within of field of Cognitive Linguistics (CL), specifically Cognitive Semantics (SC), which processes and structures are involved in categorizing VIOLENCE-verifying the application of the Idealized Cognitive Model Theory. This study was based onthe analysis of questionnaires and texts produced by adolescents fromthe urban area of Porto Alegre, which were separated into two groups, according to the specific purposes of this study : 1) adolescents with no backgroundof violent experiences, who are prime area residents who study in private schools, in the central area of the city which have a highcost and no record of problems related to violence, and 2) adolescents victimized (victims, who experencie, observers, participantsin situations involving social, urban and family violence), who study in a public school located in a region dominated by the drug trafficwar. The study was approved by the Ethics Committee, under the registration number 16732913.7.0000.5336, and authorized by the legal guardians of the participating adolescents. The main objective was divided into specific objectives: A) identify and analyze the structure of the category VIOLENCEin terms ofconceptual networks, building metaphorical and metonymicmappings of the adolescents, B) compare if there are differences betweenthe form of the category structure and its VIOLENCE conceptual grading between groups of adolescents, to examine ifthere is a relationship between the social and cultural environmentand the elaborated concepts. The hypotheses that guided this research were: A) cognitive structure and gradation of the concept VIOLENCE differ among selected groups; B) social and cultural aspects influence the categorization of VIOLENCE; and C)The Cognitive Model Theory in a contextual situation, like this one, is justified because its relation with culture and cognition, which proves, one more time, its applicative character in socio-cultural experiences. . It was verified, based on the analysis of the corpus, that there was a distance between the adolescents of the first group and their related types of violence. These adolescents, when structuring VIOLENCE in linguistic expressions used FORCE as its basic element, relating it to the experiences of global scope, such as wars, robberies, fights. However, the second group when structuring VIOLENCE in linguistic expressionsdemonstrated more emotional involvement, resulting from their bodily experiences. It was noticed, that in their reports,FORCE was the basic element, but their focus of analysis was more related to PHYSICAL DAMAGE, and PSCOLOGICAL-EMOTIONAL-MORAL DAMAGE, because scenarios described as the typical examples of violence were scenarios in which such students had lived. The DOMESTIC VIOLENCE frame was predominant in their texts, what shows us that the concept isnotthought in a global way, as a phenomenon, but interpersonally. It was proved that the way adolescents conceptualize VIOLENCE is different, because the bodily experiences influence the way we structure a concept. So, we conclude that the linguistic expressions of a concept permeate the living experiences, therefore, the IdealizedCognitiveModelTheoryisuseful forstudies of experimentalnature, involvingcognition, society andculture.

This study consists of the analyses of literacy events and practices in an anti-drug public policy context, more precisely with research locus formed by the operation of military police officers from PROERD (Educational Program of Resistance to Drugs). The aforementioned trainers perform actions intended to prevent licit and illicit drug abuse, as well as divulge their actions, initiatives and prevention campaigns through actions? reports in a virtual operating network. Therefore, the object of study are the posts from the blog ?PROERD no Sert?o? (PROERD in the backlands) created by military police officers from the region of Serid?/RN. In virtual domain, it contemplates posts of the actions developed along with students from Elementary public schools and community, with a view to direct attention to the prevention of licit and illicit drug use and abuse. The study aims to analyze the literacy events and practices implemented by PROED officers in respect to the productions and publishing of posts in the referred blog. In theoretical terms, it is based on the pressupositions of Literacy Studies as social practice (BARTON; HAMILTON, 1993, 1998, 2000; KLEIMAN, 1995, 2008; STREET, 1984; OLIVEIRA, 2008, 2010; ROJO, 2009), on genre theory (OLIVEIRA, 2010; BRONCKART, 2004, 2006), on studies of elements of linguistic, schematic and pragmatic dimension (KOCH; F?VERO, 1987), on studies about multimodality (KRESS and VAN LEEUWEN, 2006 [1996]; DION?SIO, 2006; SANTAELLA, 2012; ALMEIDA, 2011), on concepts of agency (BANDURA, 2001), hypertext and hypermedia (NOJOSA, 2007; KOMESU 2004; GOMES, 2010; KARWOSKY, 2012; FERRARI, 2007), as well as on fundamentals which have language and work as theme (SOUZA and SILVA, 2002; DUARTE; FEITOSA, 1998; PAZ, 2008, 2010). Methodologically, this investigation inserts into the Applied Linguistics field (MOITA-LOPES, 1996, 2006; PENNYCOOK, 2006) and follows a qualitative approach, bearing descriptive research characteristics (MOREIRA; CALEFFE, 2006; BOGDAN; BIKLEN, 1994; MINAYO, 2010; CHIZZOTTI, 2005). Data generation was developed through standard techniques (GIL, 1994) which comprise interviews and questionnaires and enable the ?intersection? or triangulation of information (COX; ASSIS-PETERSON, 2001). Data discussion converge to the revisitation of categories (elements and components) proposed by Hamilton (2000), when analyzing literacy events and practices, as well as the focalization of vertical (tele-reality, cyberculture) and horizontal (living/tele-living; local/global; geographical/electronic space) movements that are evoked in hyperdomain (cyberspace, blogsphere). The relevance of this study lies in the fact of bringing specific topics from the work domain to the academic realm, more specifically from the public security policy with a view to contribute to the expansion of Literacy Studies. Equally, the social importance of this study is significant due to the academic visibility it provides for the collaborators, depicting them as potential agents of public security, able to make social changes in terms of instrumental and communicative or symbolic action (MAGALH?ES, 1994). This makes the practice of writing posts a self-conscious and reflexive action, even amid the contradictions of the social processes, which hamper the full effectuation of Anti-drug Public Policies in Brazil.

This paper aims at studying inclusive discursive practices of students participating in the Program Conex?es de Saberes in a public university. This study is in the field of Applied Linguistics, which aims at language while interdisciplinarity and it is composed of a corpus with Profile, Memorials and Group interview. This study, while Humanities, conforms to the French Discourse Analysis theoretical framework, according Michel P?cheux?s discourse, interdiscourse, discursive memory and meaning production, cross-connected with educational and social studies on public affirmative action policies. By understanding language as a discoursive practice, the discourse analysis showed meaning effects in the construction of the traditional knowledge of students from common spaces reached by the program. It is concluded that the students? speech brings a discourse present in enunciates on experiences and stories about accessing and staying in the university.

The activities in labor judicial sphere are permeated by the use of diverse text genres, which are indispensable instruments to the accomplishment of actions that involve the jurisdictional realm. Among the genres that circulate in this domain, we selected the genre minutes of hearing as the object of study of this research, because it is a document supporting the actions, procedures and deliberations agreed, in hearings, by members involved in work-related litigation. In this study we aim to describe the elements that constitute the referred genre in what concerns its pragmatic, organizational and linguistic dimensions. Therefore, we use the postulations of Sociodiscursive Interactionism as theoretical framework, through the writings of Bronckart (2006; 2007; 2012), supported by Marcuschi studies (2008; 2010; 2011), Koch and Favero (1987), Elias Koch (2011; 2012) and Zanotto (2012). In methodological terms, it is characterized as a qualitative approach research (BOGDAN; BIKLEN, 1994; CHIZZOTTI, 2000; MOREIRA; CALEFFE, 2006) with aspects of an ethnographic work (ANDR?, 1995; CAN?ADO, 1994). The discussion proposed inserts into the field of Applied Linguistics for it focalizes ?social issues and creates intelligibility about the social practices in which language plays the main role? (MOITA LOPES, 2006, p.14). The analyses indicate ? regarding the pragmatic dimension ? that the genre in focus constitutes artefact that enables the register of actions, deliberations, testimonials, procedures and occurrences established during the hearings and has as its interlocutors judges, litigants and their legal representatives. Concerning the organizational dimension, despite the genre in scope present a proposal of standardized writing, their examples contemplate variations and flexibility especially with regard to the development and outcome of the text. As for linguistic aspects, it is noticeable the presence of lexical choices inherent in the language used by labor law discourse community. Lastly, stand out the relevance of the research lies in the fact that it approaches, from the perspective of the Applied Linguistics, the forensic writing and, consequently, offers contributions to the understanding of such genre.

In Applied Linguistics (AL), the investigation towards the use of language in institutional contexts, that one different from the educational field, had its starting point in the mid-1990s, especially through ethnographic researches. According to Moita Lopes (1998; 2011) these investigations are likely to take place within professional contexts such as the juridical system, hospitals and nursing institutions as well as the ones concerning public safety, setting forth the academic interest in the way one discursively behaves when using reading and writing in their work place. Having the scientific background of the AL field, defined and herein elucidated, together with its interface with the literacy studies, this investigation is a descriptive research with a qualitative approach and traits of ethnographic component (MOREIRA; CALEFFE 2006; BOGDAN; BIKLEN, 2006; CAN?ADO, 1994). The broader objective of this master?s thesis is to discuss literacy practices in census activities carried by technicians and research agents of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), when carrying out the National Household Sample Survey (PNAD). Also, this study specifically attempts to identify and characterize literate routines related to the working context of these servants in order to contribute to the enhancement of the scope of researches on Literacy in this particular locus, thus, promoting a better understanding of their utterances as a means to legitimate the institutional discourse inherent within the census area. In terms of theoretical approach, this thesis is based on Literacy Studies (STREET, 2014 [1995]; 1993; 1984; HAMILTON, 2000; KLEIMAN, 1995; OLIVEIRA, 2008; 2010; ROJO, 2009), with emphasis on Labor Literacy (PAZ, 2008), as well as some contributions from the Socio-discursive Interactionism (BRONCKART, 1999; 2006; 2008; MACHADO, 2005; GUIMAR?ES et al., 2007). In accordance with the categorizations proposed by Hamilton (2000) towards the visible and non-visible elements in Literacy events and practices, the analysis has pointed out the relevance of the continuum education offered by IBGE to its servants as well as the importance of guidance on oriented utterances in order to boost the skills of such servants to convince, once this is one of the key abilities within the job of the participants. Such discursive strategies are noticed especially in the work of research agents, whose group is directly linked to the context of the life of their informants when collecting their information at their houses, hence, these research agents also work as institutional spokesmen within the social conjuncture of the people they speak to.

In 2010, in the city of Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, it was implemented a new institutional concept aimed at the education of deaf students, materialized in Bilingual Complexes of Reference for the Deaf (CBRS), which are ten groups of two or three municipal schools, responsible for Childhood Education and Elementary School, that may have up to 50% of their student body made up of deaf students. Because of the denomination "bilingual" on the project, not only specialized professionals in deaf education (as instructors and Sign Language interpreters), but the Portuguese teachers in these institutions have great importance for its realization. In this research, the object are the voices about being a teacher in the Bilingual Complexes of Reference for the Deaf in Natal. Situated in the area of Applied Linguistics, we aim to create intelligibility on a social problem that has language occupying central role, which is being a teacher in the institutions concerned. The corpus of the research is constituted of eleven texts written by these professionals about their performance in the Complexe?s institutions. The analysis we do is built on the three topics more recurrently found in the reports, which are the initial and continuous training, teaching experiences and the institutional aspects that permeate their performance. From a qualitative-interpretative perspective, we read and discuss the data building on the concepts of language and subject prepared by the Circle of Bakhtin; the notion of difference of Cultural Studies; and discussions about deaf education of Deaf Studies. In the speeches of teachers, it is possible to identify the fluidity and multiplicity of voices that cross them. Their voices reveal the tensions between the government discourse of inclusion as perspective of Special Education and the reality faced by teachers. Despite of the differences that constitute them, their speeches touch especially with regard to insufficient training opportunities and precarious conditions of work, which have direct impact on the teaching-learning process of deaf students.

In this study, the identity constructions of the Xeque-Mate television program are analyzed, based on speeches by students of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte Social Communication undergrad course. The program, produced by the Communication Department in partnership with the University TV, since 2002, provides students with hands-on learning, since their various activities are developed in an open TV studio. The research is inserted in the area of Applied Linguistics and, due to this anchorage, it allows other theoretical incursions, going through the studies of language and the studies of social communication. This theoretical background, in particular the foundation from the Circle of Bakhtin assumptions (notion of discourse, language and subject) and from cultural studies, constituted the base in which the analysis of corpus was grounded. The analyses are based on an online questionnaire answered by 23 students of the Journalism and Radialism qualifications who participated in the program during the undergrad course. In this research, are considered different chronotopes, times and spaces that are fundamental for the constitution of these subjects. Student discourses reveal the program identities, both as a space for experiences, and as an opportunity to bring theory and practice closer together. These identities are constructed and reconstructed and are embedded in a set of social practices, spheres, and determined fields.
