A plan-do-check-act framework for WEEE and RoHS : a model for implementing WEEE and RoHS by integrating eco-design factors and activities into business operation and strategy.

El-Gomla, Randa A.M. January 2011 (has links)
Eco-design is relatively new and fast growing field of research due to its vital importance to the manufacturing industry and its related environmental issues such as reducing waste, and CO2 emission. A major EU programme relating to the environment is the waste of Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive. The (WEEE) directive specifies ten categories and a voltage range which is up to 1.000 volts AC or 1.500volts DC. The developed framework came for the implementation of Eco-design principles that helps to take into account the adaption of the (WEEE) directive and the restriction of hazard substances (RoHS) used in electrical and electronic equipments. As a result of identify gaps and needs such as a lack of a comprehensive Eco-design framework and the need to integrate it to the normal business operation. In this research the PDCA framework for Eco-design and WEEE directive will be discussed. The framework will encompass all of the Eco-design¿s implementation and integration factors and activities such as WEEE and RoHS directives, Eco-design management, Environmental legislations, Eco-design tools and considerations. The literature review covers the topic of Eco-design¿s related issues, and WEEE and RoHS directives rules. Based on comprehensive questionnaire survey of Eco-design, WEEE and RoHS issues and activities among a sample of environmentally aware companies, statistical analysis is carried out using SPSS software. Then the findings of the survey triangulated with the findings of the literature review formed the basis of the design and implementation plan of the proposed framework

Value of CO2 neutrality for sustainable engineering steel: A case study of Ovako AB

Larsson, Erik, Smith, Filip January 2022 (has links)
Steel production is today one of the most CO2-demanding activities and causes 8% of the global emissions of GHG. It is crucial for the industry to reduce its emissions radically in order to be in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement and the Science-Based Target initiative. Ovako AB, one of the leading producers of high-strength engineering steel, has been at the forefront when it comes to sustainability initiatives within the industry. Heavy investments are being made into sustainable steel production methods and technologies and to make this viable, the company has, from January 1st, 2022, started to put a price premium on their steel products of 30 € per tonne. This study aims to answer the question of how Ovako's customers, based on the three different industries of mining, automotive, and bearing, experience this price premium and how a green steel can justify this surcharge. Furthermore, this case study aims to understand the extent to which those customers require carbon neutrality when sourcing steel. Connected to the findings from the innovation theories and the literature, this study aims to answer the question of how sustainable innovations may influence future competitiveness regarding engineering steel. To answer these questions, interviews with key individuals from different customers of Ovako were conducted. Moreover, focus groups at Ovako with relevant employees have been held at the same time as a literature study has been conducted. Based on the answers obtained from the data collection, a thematic analysis has been performed where overarching themes have been identified. Additionally, a carbon impact calculator has been used to calculate the carbon reduction potential of using a carbon-neutral engineering steel in three different applications connected to the three industries investigated, namely a complete bearing, a drill bit, and a final drive unit. The results from the calculations as well as the answers obtained regarding the research questions will be presented in the conclusion chapter of the report.

Development of an environmental decision support system for the selection and integrated assessment of process flow diagrams in wastewater treatment

Garrido Baserba, Manel 04 March 2013 (has links)
The wastewater treatment plays an important role in the maintenance of natural water resources. However, regardless of the technology used or the level of treatment required, the treatment plants of the XXI century are highly complex systems that not only need to meet technical requirements, but also environmental and economic criteria. In this context, decision support systems for environmental domains (English, Environmental Decision Support Systems or EDSS) are configured as an effective tool to support the selection and evaluation of integrated water treatment alternatives. The EDSS designed can be defined as interactive software, flexible and adaptable, which links the numerical models / algorithms, techniques and environmental ontologies, knowledge-based environment, and is capable of supporting decision making, either in choosing between different alternatives, improving potential solutions, or in the integrated assessment using methodologies ranging from environmental (Life Cycle Analysis) to economic / La depuració d’aigües residuals juga un paper fonamental en el manteniment dels recursos hídrics naturals.

Förhållandet av energianvändning i en byggnads livscykel : Med hänsyn till nyreglerade krav i BBR 29 / The relationship of energy use in a building’s life cycle according to regulations in BBR 29

Shaba, Sanna, Falk, Rikard January 2021 (has links)
Purpose: With the help of the stricter requirements in the National Board of Housing, Building and Planning's building regulations, knowledge regarding energy consumption must be highlighted, in order to have knowledge of at what stage more focus needs to be placed on further reducing energy use. Method: The data required to perform calculations will be retrieved from case study, document analysis and literature study. Findings: The report's analysis shows that despite stricter energy requirements in BFS 2011: 6, it has no major impact on an energy ratio during a building's life cycle of 50 years. The results show that the stricter requirements for BFS 2011:6 chapter 9 are on the right track to reduce energy consumption over a period of 50 years. Implications: The survey shows that stage B1-7 still accounts for most of the energy use in a building's life cycle. It also shows that the National Board of Housing, Building and Planning is on the right track with the regulations made in BFS 2011: Chapter 6. The results also indicate that further efficiency is possible, and that research can be done on this by testing new technologies and materials in a building. Limitations: The lifespan of a building is divided into three different stages, theconstruction stage, the use stage and the final stage. This work is limited to the first two stages and will therefore not consider the final stage.
