Hibridismo e simultaneidade no romance \'The famished road\', de Ben Okri / Hybridity and simultaneous in the novel \'The famished road\', by Ben OkriCarbonieri, Divanize 15 May 2006 (has links)
In the novel The Famished Road (1991) Nigerian author Ben Okri gives a new dimension to the spirit child or abiku\'s image, which is a recurrent motif among the Yoruba and many other cultures from West Africa. The abiku is a characteristic subject of the African oral narrative and is also present in some African literature in English as the abiku is part of the belief of those cultures. However, Okri undertakes an innovation, turning the abiku into the narrator of his novel. Since this creature is an in between, living permanently in the intersection between the world of the living and the world of the dead, the structure of the literary work is altered by the reality as it is seen through his eyes. His vision is made up by the simultaneous images of those two worlds. In the construction of his novel, Okri tries to translate this vision to a Western reading audience, using paradigms from both the African orality and Western literature. Thus, the novel is placed in a transitional space between African and Western cultures. Narrative methods and strategies from both traditions are used and the abiku phenomenon itself is invested by other more Western conceptions about the soul\'s resurrection. This dissertation aims to reveal from a postcolonial theoretical perspective how this novel is constructed as a hybrid work between the modes of perceiving and depicting reality characteristic of each one of these cultures.

Previous issue date: 2016-11-09 / The present work, The magical Brazil of Bernardo Élis, intents to study the representation of
the magical in the short stories from the introductor of the modernism in Goiás state, in Brazil,
through the theory of magical realism, term created, by the critic and art historiographer Franz Roth, in 1925. In this purpose, we have chosen for our analyses the short stories “André Louco” and “Pai Norato” from the book Ermos e Gerais (1944); “Uma certa porta”, from Caminhos e descaminhos (1965) and “Joãoboi” from Apenas um violão, published by Élis in 1984. In this sense, we searched to trace the origins of this discursivity theorical-critic, its particularities, its applicability and / or inapplicability to bernardians texts which represents,
artistically, the sertão (hinterland) world from Goiás, through the observation of its physical
aspects and, mainly, of the sertanejos` psychological and social environment. In this sense, we use, methodologically, Antonio Candido`s dialectical premises about the relationship between the literary discourse and the society.
Neste sentido, buscamos rastrear as origens dessa discursividade

Natural Kinds, Causal Laws, Magical Concepts: an Approach to American Magical Realism”. Throughout Latin American history of ideas one can find an alienated relation towards nature, which appears as magical, indecipherable and hostile. The two main characteristics of this idea of nature are the abundance of strange species and the unpredictability of events. In this essay I will argue that the first characteristic is a natural effect of the process of inductive learning under the conditions of the discovery and conquest of America, and that the second characteristic is in turn an effect of the way how the empirical expectations with these strange species were cast in causal laws.

Although these sidebands may be used to gain information after they have been identified, it is necessary to eliminate then to simplify the interpretation of the spectra; we have recently succeeded in suppressing spinning sidebands by continuously varying the speed during the signal acquisition. This method, that we called variable low speed sideband suppression, relies on the speed dependent of the sideband positions. The purpose of this work is to describe a simple method and apparatus to suppress spinning sidebands in MAS-NMR experiments. The method allows a quick acquisition of the isotropic chemical shift spectra and works well even when the highest available spinning cannot clearly resolve the spinning sidebands. To illustrate the method, we present the 13C MAS-NMR spectra of a variety of sample acquired using cross-polarization and high power proton decoupling. Among the samples studied were: hexamethylbenzene, tyrosine, lignin and humic acid. And quadrupolar nuclei 79Br in the samples Kbr and NaBr + KBr

Previous issue date: 2015-03-27 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / This study aimed to understand in oral texts of a religious nature, of the São Domingos
community in Catalão-GO, the magical-religious dimension of the words, which, in the view
of subjects of research, has the power to influence the course of events. The material of study
were composed by five narrative episodes, with six people, dwellers or former residents of the
community, in a qualitative study of mixed character, which involved studies in
office/laboratory and field. We assumed that the permeated linguistic events of popular religion,
especially catholicism, would present a magical-religious dimension whose the elements
external to language and resulting from agreements concluded by speaking community over
time, could give, or not, the pragmatic meaning of the words or language constructions, with
their power according to the context in which they perform. The recordings, transcripts,
inventory and analysis of data, in lexicultural perspective (PESSOA, 2005; PINTO CORREIA,
2013; DURANTI, 2000 among others), revealed that the extra-linguistic universe of the
subjects under study - the circumstances, the social conventions and the historical and cultural
facts - that circumscribe the religious texts in their daily lives, participates in the construction
of the meanings attributed to linguistic signs of field of the worldview of popular catholicism.
Finally, the study corroborated the thesis that language is intrinsically related to the culture of
a people, especially in its lexical configuration, where the cultural traits of a people are better
evidenced (BIDERMAN, 1998; SOUZA, 2014). In this context, the words, as a key element of
the practices analyzed in this study, is considered as a element of wisdom of human that,
understood as action and medium of communication, acquires the power to act in the world,
taking a magic-religious dimension.
As

Sociabilidades e Práticas Mágico-Religiosas no Brasil (1890/1940) / Magic and survival rites: sociability and magic-religious practices in Brazil (1890-1940).Wissenbach, Maria Cristina Cortez 04 November 1997 (has links)
This thesis, Ritos de magia e sobrevivência, is focused on magical-religious manifestations in its links with Social History of Brazil and São Paulo in the last years of the nineteenth century to the early decades of the twentieth century. The theme was originally suggested by our previous research based on criminal documentation of the second half of the nineteenth century that drew attention to the importance of a diffuse religiosity, in general originated from the African-Brazilian beliefs, in the struggle against reification intended by slavery and their effects on post-Abolition. Steeped in the organization of everyday life of urban and rural populations, many of them coming from the slave condition, manifested in the action of healers, shamans, and pythoness, the strength of a religious sensibility became an essential component of cognitive processes and a conception of the world able to provide references for such groups could think about their social status and be compatible with the wider society. On the other hand, in the frames of transformations operated in this period, in continuity with the traditions of popular Catholicism and African-Brazilians rites, in a stead process of revival of the most various currents of mystical thought and magic, the religious dimension denote in other terms the historical process in progress. São Paulo´ History at this time, marked by phenomenal growth in the number of inhabitants, was also marked by the spread of spiritual strands of thought: the diffusion of spiritualism, the theories and practices related to Animal Magnetism, the Occultism, the Cartomancy mixed with ancient traditions and practices and ultimately shape different figures. Moreover, allude to the climate of social insecurity, the mobility of population groups of immigrants, migrants and blacks population, and also fluctuations implicit in ongoing historical processes, reveal indirectly the social cost of urbanization and modernization. Borrowing the terms of Oswaldo Xidieh (1944), \"lords and ladies in ripe age, old black and macumbeiros, pious and midwives, healers and faith healers, chanters, chaplains and cooks, nannies and mumbavas, and young singers , folientos the Divine, wanderers and penitents butts \"are the subjects of this study.
