In memory of cats : the camera and the ordinary moment : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Masters in Fine Arts at Massey University, Wellington, New Zealand

Korver, Ruth M. January 2009 (has links)
In memory of cats: The camera and the ordinary moment looks at the way in which families use photographs to remember the past. Photography’s offer of memory is limited to a visual trace, so strategies of oral telling are examined to interrogate the way in which memories can be recovered from photographs. Martha Langford’s study of the similarities between structures in oral culture and the photograph album and Annette Kuhn’s strategies for reading family photographs in a broader historical context, are used to examine and recover memories from my own photographic archive. Using moving image to record those memories and then tell how that photographic evidence has shaped my present, is a process suggested by Linda Williams in her writing about how postmodern documentary can use the past to intervene in the present. Other documentary styles, performative documentary and the essay film, offer a structure for personal memories to be revisited and re-presented to public viewers. Offering a space for personal or specific memories to be understood or related to by a viewer is discussed by Lisa Saltzman, who looks at indexical forms other than the photograph, like casting and tracing. These ideas culminated in my video work, A Clowder of Cats, which explores the losses that have been a part of my history, through photographs of the cats my family has owned. The camera gives us a strategy to remember moments that may otherwise have been forgotten, and moving image provides a space for those ordinary moments to be bought back to the present.

The development of a mass memory unit for a micro-satellite using NAND flash memory

Horsburgh, Ian J. 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2005. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis investigates the possible use of NAND flash memory for a mass memory unit on a micro-satellite. The investigation begins with an analysis of NAND flash memory devices including the complexity of the internal circuitry and the occurrence of bad memory sections (bad blocks). Design specifications are produced and various design architectures are discussed and evaluated. Subsequently, a four bus serial access architecture using 16- bit NAND flash devices was chosen to be developed further. A VHDL design was created in order to realise the intended system functionality. The main functions of the design include a sustained write data rate of 24 MB/s, bad block management, multiple image storing, error checking and correction, defective device handling and reading while writing. The design was simulated extensively using NAND flash simulation models. Finally, a demonstration test board was designed and produced. This board includes an FPGA and an array of 16 8-bit NAND flash devices. The board was tested sucessfully and a write data rate of 12 MB/s was achieved along with all the other main functions. Fisiese metings was ’n sukses.

Evaluation et amélioration de la sécurité des circuits intégrés analogiques / Evaluation and improvement of analog IC security

Beringuier-Boher, Noémie 30 January 2015 (has links)
With the development of the Internet of things, the number of connected devices is in constant increase. These objects use a large amount of data including personal credentials. Therefore, security has become a major constraint for System on Chips (SoCs) designers. Moreover, in a context more and more aggressive in terms of performances and time to market, it is important to find low cost security solutions. Although the hardware security is often treated from a digital point of view, almost every SoCs is also using analog and mixed IP. Thus, this work presents different steps to improve the security of analog IPs, from vulnerability analysis to countermeasures design validation, and behavioral modeling in the context of mixed signals and low cost applications. To protect any system, the first requirement is to know its vulnerabilities. To do so, a vulnerability analysis methodology dedicated to analog circuit has been developed. Using the results of this analysis, countermeasures can be designed during the development of the circuit and not at the end. The circuit security is thus improved without dramatically increasing its cost in terms of design time. The analysis of a clock system generator, an analog IP widely used in current SoCs and composed with various sub-circuits, has shown fault attacks using Laser Photoelectric Stimulation (LPS) or supply voltage glitches as important threats. After having identified the 2 previous attacks types as major threats, their effects on analog circuits are analyzed. Existing countermeasures are then compared and evaluated for the protection of analog IPs. To complete these solutions, two analog detectors have been designed to detect laser and supply voltage glitch attacks considering SoCs level constraints. Electrical test of these detectors processed on CMOS 28nm FD-SOI technology proved their efficiency. Theoretical vulnerability analysis has shown some difficulties. Indeed, analog circuits are sensitive to numerous parametrical faults. Also, the high interconnection of various sub-circuits makes the faults propagation analysis quite difficult. To help this analysis, electrical simulations at transistor level are necessary. These simulations are quite long and, so the behavioral modeling of analog circuits to help the analysis of supply voltage glitch attack effects has been studied. To do so, the developed models must be developed according different constraints presented in this report and applied to the behavioral modeling of a real analog circuit. This illustration proved that behavioral models can be used to help to identify which attack shapes are the most likely to induce faults in the circuit.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Bárbara Regina Firmino.pdf: 1525895 bytes, checksum: 12478a5935a71181a9d39b4a447d4722 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-05-31 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / This research presents the memories of young adults living with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), infected by vertical transmission (from birth), about their adolescence period at school. The proposed problem in the research was based on a professional experience in the Health Care area, more specifically, in the attendance to the HIV positive young and teenage public. The objectives of the study were to identify and investigate, through young adults’ memories, the experiences of positive HIV teenage students, infected by vertical transmission. Using the qualitative methodology of the Oral History, the survey was conducted at the Extension Service to HIV/AIDS Patients of the Sao Paulo University’s Medicine College’s General Hospital. Hence, eight young adults born between January/1995 and January/1998, of both sexes, with HIV through mother-to-child transmission and graduated in high school were selected to the individual interview. The theoretical basis presents: Morin, (2003), Goffman (2004), Matida and Gianna (2014), Sommerhalder (2010), Lang, Campos and Demartini (2010), Toledo (2011), Meihy e Ribeiro (2011) among others. The discussion shows ten categories where was found, through the interviewees’ narratives, how the silence about health conditions set in the educational environment. The lack of information on the subject still prevails and the stigma created around the HIV/AIDS epidemic, started in the 80s, has not been overcome yet. The life paths of these young individuals living with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are part of the trajectory of the fight against the HIV/AIDS infection either in Brazil as worldwide, not only in the biological aspect, but also in the social, family and cultural areas involving the daily lives of individuals with HIV. Respondents highlighted the need for media coverage serving for HIV prevention and strong update for teachers. The conclusions aim at the presentation of the study to the advertising campaigns area of the IST Department, AIDS and Viral Hepatitis, to the DST/AIDS-SP Reference Center and Training and to the dialogue between Education and Health in the teachers’ training area. A base teórica apresenta: Morin, (2003), Goffman (2004), Matida e Gianna (2014), Sommerhalder (2010), Lang; Campos e Demartini (2010), Toledo (2011), Meihy e Ribeiro (2011) e outros de igual relevância.

Jindřich Skopec - kněz a historik / Jindřich Skopec - the priest and historian

PRAŽÁKOVÁ, Lenka January 2014 (has links)
This submitted diploma thesis deals with the life of Jindřich Skopec (1873-1942), who worked as a priest, an archivist, a teacher of theology at a secondary school and a historian. His interests were multilateral, but he indelibly imprinted his name in the past thanks to his unflagging diligence and his honest work. He built his eternal memorial with his careful word processing of the work called "The memories of František Jan Vavák, neighbour and mayor in Milčice". These "Memories" were published in five books and the publisher was "Dědictví svatojánské". Thus, he became an honorary membership of history research group. Publishing of these "Memories" was Skopec´s life work and unforgettable legacy for the future generation. He also deeply stuck in mind of his contemporaries, because he dedicated his life to education of youth. He taught them to religious belief, moral and deeply humility. The diploma thesis is ever the first that tries to contain the life of this outstanding priest and historian from his early childhood over his clerical activity to his research activity.

Photography and Mourning: Excavating Memories of My Great-Grandmother

Weiner, Eva 01 January 2018 (has links)
This paper explores how photographs have affected mourning processes in the past and how photo-technology may be able to change the way in which we mourn in the future. It includes an overview of the history of post-mortem photography and discusses the perspectives of well-known media theorists such as Roland Barthes and Susan Sontag. It engages with psychologists by including their perspectives on the effect that photographs have on the mourning process. A project was created to investigate how photo-technology can affect the bereaved. The project places photographs of a mother into pictures of her children taken after she had passed away. These photographs were later shown to her sons in order to explore how this impacts their memories and mourning processes.

Entre risos e prantos : as memórias acerca da luta armada contra a ditadura no Rio Grande do Sul

Ruschel, Davi Arenhart January 2011 (has links)
This research aimed to analyze the memories that were built as for the armed fight against the Brazilian Military-Civil Dictatorship, that took place in late 1960s, early 1970s in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Starting from memory books written by those who took up arms in the State, interviewing these ex-guerrilla fighters, and based in a research in those days newspapers, first it sought reconstructing what about happened of armed fight in Rio Grande do Sul. Next, an analysis in which ways these memories were being reconstructed was done, sometimes picturing that fight in a comic way, and in others highlighting a more violent aspect of the repression over those who fought against the regime. The research sought to understand the factors that influenced the way in which these narratives were developed, like the ex-guerrilla fighters trajectory from the armed fight to the moment they have written their books, the context in which Brazil has lived at the moment they were written, and the possible influence the reading of other ex-guerrilla fighter books might have had over the analyzed authors. Based on the analyses of these memory books, it was possible to understand in a general way some identity factors of this group who took up arms against Dictatorship. The analyzed books were “Guerra é Guerra, dizia o torturador” (War is War, said the torturer) by Índio Vargas; “O Riso dos Torturados” (The Laughter of the Tortured) by Jorge Fischer Nunes; “Verás que um filho teu não foge à luta” (You’ll see your son won’t escape from fighting) by João Carlos Bona Garcia; “A Guerrilha Brancaleone” (Brancaleone’s Guerrilla) by Cláudio Antônio Weyne Gutiérrez.

Chagas, Miriam de Fatima January 2005 (has links)
This study analyzes situations involving the recognition of quilombolos (technically, descendents of runaway slaves) under article 68 of the Brazilian Federal Constitution. Starting from an ethnographic study, carried out in a local context – Morro Alto/RS – I consider the re-reading of the historical experience of slavery which has urged negro social groups onto a scenario of legal claims which, until recently, had not been foreseen by state law. I look into the social and juridical dynamics involved in the implementation of this constitutional article to see if, in normative and discursive aspects, it has encouraged lines of dialogue with the actors´(social groups´) own notions of justice and rights, allowing them to enter into national debates. I also reflect on the visibility of the historical negro presence in Brazil by consulting registers produced by a series of social actors, including anthropologists (who contribute with judicial consultancies), and a number of governmental and non-governmental organizations. I thus focus on the terms, positions and new configurations of knowledge-power implied in the present reality of rights claims. Taking into consideration the new perspectives projected onto the “historical past”, I investigate the re-enactments and the disputes of meaning with which the different sectors of society reflect on and relate with justice, law and historical narrative as filtered through the memory of quilombolas.

Godard, Rebecca 18 December 2013 (has links)
A recent research conducted by Holmes et al. (2009) show this conclusion. Traumatic intrusions are one of three main symptom of post-traumatic stress disorder. During exposition to a traumatic event, information processing is not the same that usually. Under extreme stress, perceptual information is mainly processed leading to a lack of conceptual framework. This maladjustment prevent the build of integrate representation to autobiographical memory. Full of sensorial and perceptive details, traumatic intrusions lead to neurovegetative hyperarousal, emotional and psychological distress when reactivated. Current know to cognitive sciences we allow better understanding to processing at work in build of traumatic intrusions. We want to continue the research of Holmes et al. indicating that the realization of visuospatial task reduces traumatic intrusions
