The importance of evaluating before selecting appropriate activities as interventions in psychiatry : A qualitative study conducted as a Minor Field Study at a psychiatric clinic in Vietnam.

Dagnäs, Maja, Fredriksson, Julia January 2020 (has links)
Aim: The purpose of this study is to describe the intervention process at a psychiatric clinic in Vietnam, from evaluation to goal setting, and how the staff choose occupation-based intervention for their patients. Method: This study is a qualitative study with inductive approach where the data collection is based on a semi-structured interview with the health care staff at a psychiatric clinic in Vietnam. The respondents consisted of a total of ten participants and were required by a purposive sample. Content analysis according to Kristensson (2014) was used to examine the data. Result: The findings from the result revealed that the clinic work without a standard procedure where the staff evaluates and assess their patient from their own experience. They also interview and observe the patients without an aim. The result also showed that the clinic offers different occupation-based interventions where the doctor decides occupation-training but not in consultation with the patient. It was revealed that the purpose of the occupation is to make the patients independent. The last finding was that the staff has a lack of individual goal setting and the general goal is for patients to get healthy. To see if the patients achieve improvement, observations are made without aim. Conclusion: The study concludes that the health care staff at the clinic has found their strategies using their own experience, for evaluating and assessing their patients.

Serious Mental Illness and Rural Primary Care: Provider Training, Attitudes, and Opinions

Eisenbrandt, Lydia 01 August 2020 (has links)
Healthcare resources are especially limited in rural regions of the US. The lack of Primary Care Providers (PCPs) and mental/behavioral health services is problematic, as there are high rates of behavioral and medical concerns within rural populations. Special populations, such as rural persons with Serious Mental Illness (SMI), are medically complex and represent a vulnerable and underserved population. Healthcare outcomes for persons with SMI are poor compared to the general population and commonly lead to premature death. Various barriers prevent this population from accessing optimal healthcare, especially in rural areas, due to negative perceptions/stigma, a lack of understanding from PCPs, and a shortage of resources in general. The current study aimed to determine the extent of mental health training that rural PCPs receive regarding patients with SMI, as well as to evaluate their perceptions, knowledge, and experiences with these patients and understand providers’ perceptions regarding rates of patients with SMI who present to primary care clinics in rural settings. The current study used a sample of rural primary care providers (N = 90) , surveyed via USPS mail. Results indicated significant differences in reported mental health training among providers from different disciplines. Greater reported mental health training significantly predicted lower levels of stigma, more correctly identified medical conditions comorbid with SMI, and greater reported comfort and confidence in treating patients with SMI. Providers reported differences in the number of patients with and without SMI seen in rural clinics. Implications for these findings are discussed.

Blom, Josefine, Granholm, Andrea January 2020 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to investigate how adolescents, aged between 13 and 18, with mental illness was affected by social media from the perspective of counsellors and how this knowledge can be used in treatment. Four counsellors participated in qualitative interviews. The results showed that the adolescents use of social media favoured their social contacts and supportive networks. Disadvantages were the adolescents’ constant accessibility, that they compare themselves with others and exposure to, for example bullying. Furthermore, adolescents with mental illness can be extra vulnerable. Regarding treatment it was reported that initial mapping questions and conversations about setting boundaries were described as important. A need for education for the counsellors about social media was also highlighted. The results correlate in the most part with previous research and, overall, it is important to take this knowledge into account when treating adolescents with mental illness.

The War Within: Mental Health Rhetoric in NF’s Rap Lyrics

Armstrong, Heidi 01 December 2019 (has links)
More celebrities have been opening up about the mental illness (MI) journey, despite its stigmatized status in society. This shift has become popular with some rap artists, including Kanye West, Logic, and NF. However, little research exists on mental health rhetoric in the rap industry. In this project, I contributed to filling this gap by looking at the lyrics of American rapper, NF. Because his music is rising popularity and heavily focused on MI experience, NF was a worthy rhetor to study. I used Fantasy Theme Analysis to discover the fantasy themes present in NF’s album The Search. These fantasy themes present bind together to create a rhetorical vision of how NF experiences an internal war because of his MI. NF’s experiences may be shared by his listeners that also deal with the complexities of MI and its associated stigma. By talking about his MI experiences openly and honestly, NF and other celebrities can use their public platform to increase feelings of belongingness and reduce feelings of self-stigma.

The power of art creation to revive : Authorized art therapists and experienced art teachers’conceptions and opinions about health work and art therapy methods in school and art classes.

Lövgren, Sanna January 2020 (has links)

Upplevelser Av Bemötande – Ett Patientperspektiv : Att ha psykisk ohälsa i den somatiska vården / Experiences of care – a patient perspective : Mental illness in somatic care

Andersson, Tova, Lund, Michaela January 2022 (has links)
Resultat: Analysen resulterade i två teman 1) Positiva upplevelser. / Background: Mental illness is an increasing societal problem. In society likewise in healthcare this group of patients experience stigma This leads to a more inaccessible healthcare and may lead to a barrier to people seeking care. This goes against the law of health and care likewise the ethical code of International Council of nurses [ICN] and creates a challenge for healthcare personnel. Aim: The aim of this literature study was to research how patients with mental illness experience treatment in a somatic care setting. Method: Literature review consisting of 10 scientific articles with qualitative and mixed methods approach. The searches were made in CINAHL and PubMeds databases. The analysis was conducted with the help of Braun and Clarke’s analysis for studies with a qualitative approach. Results: The analysis resulted in two themes 1) Positive experiences. 2) Negative experiences with the subthemes: Rejection, Experienced stigmatization and Lack of knowledge. Conclusion: Patients with mental illness speak of good experiences when in contact with somatic healthcare. Although some attest to experiencing preconceptions, stigmatization and discrimination. Bias seemed to be rooted in a lack of knowledge from the caregiver and led to consequences for the patients.

It’s set up for it to fail at some point” : Conditions for collaboration within Swedish compulsory care for substance abusers and the significance it has for the care provided to clients with comorbidity

Kristensen, Ida, Watson, Ilsa January 2022 (has links)
The purpose of this qualitative study is to examine barriers and facilitators to collaboration within compulsory care for substance abusers according to LVM. Furthermore, the aim is to examine how these factors affect the care provided to clients with comorbidity of substance abuse and mental health disorders. The empirical data are based on experiences of professionals who work at the social services, at LVM-institutions and at operations that accept clients according to 27 § LVM. The result is divided into three periods, which are before the institution, during the institution and after the institution. The barriers and facilitators are divided into three theoretical themes in each period. These themes are regulations, organisation and point of view. Different forms of vertical and horizontal integration are used to supplement the analysis and examine what significance each form of integration has on the care provided to clients with comorbidity. The result shows that the barriers and facilitators are relatively similar in each period of the LVM-care. Overall, it seems that it is set up for the collaboration to fail at some point because of the unpredictable barriers, which is why it is important that a high degree of both vertical and horizontal integration exist, since one of them is not enough to bring overall satisfactory care for the clients with comorbidity. A closeness to each other and an organisation that is more coordinated can lead to a high degree of integration on both levels.
