E em busca dessas interpenetrações entre imprensa e literatura, conduzimos nossa trajetória de pesquisa / Abstract: In our dissertation we suggest a reinterpretation of the novel Helena, by Machado de Assis, from the readout of its original publication format, the feuilleton in the pages of the O Globo journal in the year of 1876. Thus, we sought to read the novel in interlocution with its own time, in order to identify feasible inspirations, dialogues and debates with the environment that involved the writer and his work. In this process, we concentrated in an allegedly modern journalistic discourse, which in a recurrent manner would approach the theme of the feminine and feminist struggles in Brazil and in the world. Therefore, in view of the gender focus, we believe in the premise that the readership would encounter perceptions that dialogued with the fictitious universe proposed by Machado. And searching for these interpenetrations between the press and literature, we lead our research trajectory / Mestrado / Historia e Historiografia Literaria / Mestra em Teoria e História Literária

The main goal of this thesis was to analyze this novel written by Machado de Assis in the periodical where it first appeared. The intention was to identify the themes addressed in the literary text and to understand the interpretations that could have been raised among its first readers. Thus, reading the novel in the periodical allows realizing that one of Machado?s main concerns was to fight against realist literature that was based on a scientific approach. According to the author, these two elements represented a society where appearances overcame reality, perpetuating injustices. In Machado?s novel, this esthetic criticism - that assumes also the role of a social criticism - appears through the actions of his female characters, who made evident the fiction of the world where they lived and showed the available alternatives to escape from everyday oppressions / Mestrado / Historia Social / Mestre em História

também como atividade de criação literária / This work investigates how the construction of reading characters, in the narratives
of Eça and Machado, is configured as a literary creation expedient that elucidates
the composition of the fictional agents. Through the choices and ways by which
they perform their readings, the characters reveal themselves, for their
temperaments, moral constitution and preferences stand out. There are also, in the
actions of the characters, different meanings for reading, considering from the
interpretative reading of literary texts, as well as the readings of the world, of
environments and even of behaviors and expressions. In order to delimit a
theoretical basis, elements that make up the discussion focus were highlighted:
reading, character, literary comprehension, using approaches by Jouve, Iser, Eco, as
well as the contributions of critical readers of Eça and Machado, such as Reis and
Bosi, respectively. In the observation and analysis of the relation that the characters
maintain with the reading and of how this aspect interferes in the development of
the narratives, the figure of the real reader is also emphasized, as central element,
whose participation in the unveiling of the works constitutes also as literary

Despite differences in style and politics, most writers who collaborated to the Jornal das Famílias offered women a whole set of essays with moralizing and religious overtones. Machado de Assis, the intellectual who wrote most of the short stories published by the magazine, deployed several strategies to get closer to his female readers. For instance, he wrote fictional pieces with characters who played the agents of morality and, at same time, questioned royal politics and forms of domination. Also through his ¿reader-characters¿ and suggestions of some novels, Machado allowed us to know something about the profile of that magazine¿s readers / Mestrado / Historia Social / Mestre em História

Previous issue date: 2006-10-02 / Secretaria da Educação do Estado de São Paulo / This dissertation was born from the idea to make the analysis of the character
Virgília
she begins at Posthumous Reminiscences of Brás Cubas
through the
figures of language. To its achievement were used like teoric foundation the
concepts of the next researchers: Roland Barthes, Chaïm Perelman, Paul Ricoeur,
Frederick Nietzche, Olivier Reboul, Quintiliano, Aristóteles, Gèrard Genette, Tereza
Lúcia Halliday, Walter de Castro, Hélio de Seixas Guimarães e Ana Cecília Lessa,
Beth Brait, Vladímir Propp, Soren Kierkegaard, Márcio Gimenes de Paulo, Henri
Bergson e Douglas Colin Muecke. They all, in a way or another, directly or indirectly,
take their researches at Rhetoric. This subject was very important to the Greek
people because, since the Antiquity, it was necessary to its intelectual upbringing,
even though its main goal was to teach speaking and writing well , in other words, its
objective was to study the ways of persuation present in the speech. And, how it´s
known that there isn t free speech second intentions
the Greeks were one of the
first people to realize that the maintenance of the power come of the dominance of
the persuasive techniques . This way, based on these concepts, looked for to put in
evidence the rhetoric elements, or rather, the figures of the language used by Brás
Cubas, the narrator of the Posthumous Reminiscences , in the description of Virgília.
But, to that, it didn t lose sight this autodiegetic narrator, even though his voice is the
only one to tell the respective narrative, and, of course, that he will take this
opportunity to denounce the social injustices, even if he has to expose himself (as
Henri Bergson e Douglas Colin Muecke.
A importância

Previous issue date: 2006-10-27 / Secretaria da Educação do Estado de São Paulo / The proposal of this work is to start from a thorough reading of Memórias
Póstumas de Brás Cubas of Machado de Assis and to find out four discursive
levels in the text: the Old Testament discourse, the discourse of Stoic
Philosophers, the New Testament discourse and the Christian theologian Aurélio
Agostinho, and finally the discourse of French moralists as Voltaire.
I will show you the evidences of these discourses in the novel text as well
as the characteristics which turn concomitant and similar instances into structural
pillars which bear the novel gender, according to Bakhtin s definition. Those
structures suggest several discursive approaches, some of them concerning the
plot nature, others regarding to a critical way about the sources in which Machado
de Assis inspired himself or devoured anthropophagically in order to establish a
revolutionary narrative discourse which does not end in those four instances.
However, they are like pillars which bear and provide a framework for the greatest
acrobat capers .
Acrobat capers, this is a way which I would define the style of Machado de
Assis, a caper in the air without any rope or protection net towards a joy taken by
the discovery of the skill which deludes the reader and leads him to ethereal
spaces which are beyond the matter / A proposta deste trabalho é, a partir de uma leitura atenta da obra
comprovem certa a existência no texto de quatro níveis discursivos: o discurso do
Antigo Testamento, o discurso dos filósofos Estóicos, o discurso do Novo
moralistas franceses, notadamente Voltaire.
Apontarei exemplos desses discursos no romance e indicarei as

Previous issue date: 2006-11-16 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This study has the aim of investigating the opera's representation in D.
Casmurro's speech, as an I mask, which unroll itself in three personas: Casmurro
as an author, narrator and as a character, Bentinho.
This expansion creates a correlation with the operistic tripartite structure,
whose authorship is shared among the playwriter, the librettist and the musician,
besides, it appears in the novel in chapters VIII - It's time , IX - The Opera and X
Accepted the Theory , in which the narrator approches his life to an operistic
spectacle.
This operistic drama element in DC's structure, has been the target not only
for the critics as we´ll see in chapter 2, but also for composers like João Gomes Jr.,
who had transformed DC in a theater show. The music score belongs to him, but the
libretto was written by Antonio Picarollo, which could be found in the music section of
Rio de janeiro's nacional library.
To reach our goal and to be able of demonstrating the operistic scene built by
the casmurro-author, we started with Machado de Assis' experience in the theater,
trying to show to our reader how the author experienced his life that later he wrote in
the novel.
In chapter 2, we will recuperate the literary censorious' voice, because they
analysed the opera that appears inside the novel, giving a special view of the
methaphor and alegory that could be seen in DC.
In chapter 3, the central focus will be the opera, its parts and relations with
DC, showing how the overture, arias, intermezzos, preludes and leitmotifs are written
in the narrative.
Finally in chapter 4, our target will be to analyse the operistic mask inside the
novel's speech through Casmurro's tripartite performance as long as a playwriter,
Tal desdobramento cria

Previous issue date: 2007-05-09 / Secretaria da Educação do Estado de São Paulo / This dissertation intends to interpret the doubt, from the classic conception to the modern one, starting from their structural function in DOM CASMURRO narrative. The aesthetic elements, that interact in its architecture, are the metaphor and the irony, procedures that help to build the tragic error of the character-narrator Bentinho and his existencial vision in the intrigue od stubbornness.
The theoretical grounding departs from the Poetics of Aristotle and extends to the modern theoreticians: Schopenhauer (1966), Kierkegaar (2005), Bergson (1983), Paz (2005) , et al.
The research object is the evidence of the error caused by the doubt on the poetic effect in the romance´s architecture. The tragic error, affects ironically the whole through the optics of the narrator-author Casmurro, preparing the modern vision of Machado de Assis romance.
The first chapter entitled The construction of the tragic error presents Aristotle s classic conception proceeded by the modern conception of different authors, making the correlation of the metaphor and irony with Casmurro doubt construction.
The second chapter, under the title Tradition x Modernity , treats the concept of Greek tragedy and the tragic element and its function in breaking the values of the past.
The third chapter entitled The double function of the tragic error treats the Aristotelian catharsis and its aesthetic effect given the tragicalness of life.
In the final considerations, we refer about the effects generated by the cathartic tragicalness process through the metaphor on the dissimulation of the look of Casmurro, due to the construction of the tragic error in the architecture of the romance DOM CASMURRO of Machado de Assis / Esta dissertação se propõe a interpretar a dúvida, desde a concepção clássica à moderna, a partir de sua função estrutural na narrativa DOM CASMURRO.

Previous issue date: 2009-06-30 / Our study focused on the short story Theory of Medallion (1881), of Machado de Assis, with the aim of studying how the author articulates the use of parody understood in its double sense of parallelism and reversal in light of the theoretical foundations of Hutcheon (1995) for whom the parody is ironic "trans-contextualizing", that is, repetition with critical difference and Bakhtin (1993), which highlights the dialogical structure of parody speech: a "premeditated hybrid" between the parodied speech and the one which parodies it, without, however, destroying it. Although there are some studies in the critical fortune of this short story that go in that direction, such as: Almeida (2006) and Rego (1989), we would deal with parody under another perspective, that is, in the context of the serious-comic tradition, especially the Menippean satire, whose dialogical root is closely examined by Bakhtin as the original cell of Romanesque speech. It is under such strain which Machado was explicitly influenced by, as he has obliquely registered in a metafictional passage on Theory of Medallion: "you must not only use the irony, this movement at the corner of the mouth, full of mysteries, invented by a Greek of the decadence, contracted by Lucian, transmitted to Swift and Voltaire, common feature of the skeptical and insolent " that the subtitle "Dialogue" is materialized as a parody of a gender included in the tradition of the classical Platonic dialogues. By means of discourse analysis of the ambivalent Machadian short story, we point out the moments in which he was under a different discourse - that of The Republic of Plato - which now approached, now pushed away, in an alternate game of hiding-revealing in the manner of Machado, a reader of Lucian of Samosata. Our goal, however, was not only to unveil the parody construction within the narrative structure. We also intended, through this exemplary short story inside the short stories of the author, to reflect on the formative aspect that engenders, either at the level of gender as a hybrid of, at least, three matrices: the serious-comic of Menippean, the Platonic dialogue and the essay or "story-theory" (Bosi, 1999) or at the level of Machadian project of national literature whose cornerstone is the formation of a skillful reader capable of understanding, through an inside out reading, the critical hidden under the supposed praise of the picture of the medallion, typical successful citizen of the Brazilian society of the nineteenth century, which is nourished only of appearances / Nosso estudo centrou-se sobre o conto Teoria do Medalhão (1881), de Machado de Assis, tendo por objeto de investigação o modo como o autor articula o recurso da paródia entendida no seu duplo sentido de paralelismo e inversão à luz dos fundamentos teóricos de Hutcheon (1995), para quem a paródia é transcontextualização irônica, isto é, repetição com diferença crítica e Bakhtin (1993), que destaca a estrutura dialógica do discurso paródico: um híbrido premeditado entre o discurso parodiado e aquele que o parodia, sem, contudo, destruí-lo.
