Willem Boshoff, monographie d'artiste et catalogue / Willem Boshoff, artist's monograph and catalogue

Gentric, Katja 27 April 2013 (has links)
Willem Boshoff’s work articulates around a pivotal date, April 1994, the first democratic elections in South Africa. He may choose to work gigantic rocks of granite or establish vast installations of accumulated material. The artist claims that his work is based on language, often taking the form of Dictionaries. While reviewing the main questions by artists of the twentieth century, texts or artworks from Europe are systematically tested against their South African counterpart. Boshoff’s attitude is determined by a melancholic questioning of his role as a creator linked to a political situation and cultural milieu. He discovers more dynamic ways of presenting gestures when his artistic activity is related to the way of life of a druid. As a conscientious objector he learnt that it is often better to hide the true signification of a sign or to disqualify a text. Boshoff’s “Notes towards a blind Aesthetic”, where the essential is not visible, invent a dictionary to be read with the hands. Questioning perception theories provides the artist with a way of capsizing the occidental world towards patterns of thinking that he can claim for himself. The multiplicity of languages in South Africa opens up to questions of memory, ecology, disappearance, mental space as a site of creation, experiments with the limits of the fictional. The druid is one exceptional character amongst others in the contemporary art world. Boshoff obliges his visitor to participate in an act of translation which is given provisional but tangible form in such works as “Writing in the Sand” and the “Gardens of Words”. The druid becomes the guardian of words and plants in danger of being forgotten also safeguarding them against being petrified or fossilized into a set theory or dogma. Kindred spirits working on all continents are: Sarkis, Mofokeng, Baumgarten, Mudzunga, Ulrichs, Kosuth, Wafer, Bochner, Gette, Filliou, Darboven, Alÿs, Acconci, Langa, Marshall McLuhan and Ivan Vladislavić.

No. of bitstreams: 1 SILVA_Ricardo Pereira_2016.pdf: 1677983 bytes, checksum: e14867acd0508b5bf40cc57582ef7091 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2016-02-25 / Outra / This research sought to answer which is the conception of citizenship resulting from teaching Sociology in the 3rd year of high school, offered by the state of São Paulo, more specifically, at Sorocaba. The desideratum was to verify if the teaching material used for the Sociology class exposes the citizenship as a formal concept, so defined by the liberal sociologist T.H. Marshall. He assumes that there are antagonistic social classes and that the struggle for democratic rights occurs naturally as part of the historical development. Among the authors we use as a reference, the following stand out: besides Marshall, John Locke, Norberto Bobbio, Decio Saes, Newton Duarte, Ivo Tonet, Nilda Teves Ferreira, Marcos Francisco Martins, and others. The literature review worked with the concept of citizenship from the etymology, the perspective of historical and dialectical materialism, from the liberal interpretation of the concept, as well as criticizing the liberal concept. The study also presents a brief historical of sociology teaching in high school and analyze show the concept of citizenship is treated in textbooks, indicated by National Textbook Program. In the last chapter of this work, we presents the results of fieldwork, which consisted in a questionnaire with open and closed questions made to five teachers of Sociology from Sorocaba area and twentyseven students as well.

Timmerensamhet och tegelhelvete : Om ensamhet och inre rörelse i Eyvind Johnsons Nu var det 1914 / Timber loneliness and brickworks hell : Loneliness and inner movement in Eyvind Johnson’s Nu var det 1914

Dandenell, Helena January 2022 (has links)

Wars and Rumors of Wars: Mobilizing the United States Army and National Guard, 1939-1941

Emmert, John 05 1900 (has links)
The United States Army of the Second World War faced a shortage of manpower after two decades of budgetary and organizational neglect following the post-First World. According to the Chief of Staff, George C. Marshall, this period of mobilization, between 1939 and 1941, was the most crucial of the entire war. In this period, the United States Army pursued large-scale peacetime mobilization, breaking from eighty years of traditional policy. As such, the effort to increase allocations for armaments, industrial expansion, tactical reorganization of the ground forces, mobilizing the National Guard, and the implementation of a peacetime draft all faced an uphill political battle to accomplish, reflecting the complicated political factionalism of the late New-Deal United States. Between the outbreak of hostilities in Europe in 1939 and December 1941, the United States Army grew from less than 150,000 men to more than 1 million personnel, incorporating the National Guard and inductees while also adopting many of the weapon systems it would use throughout the conflict. By mobilizing a usable core for a wartime army and vetting its general tactics and doctrine in peacetime, the Army leadership provided a cadre capable of responding to some of the Allied powers' strategic requirements during the critical year of 1942.
