Compassionate Music Teaching with adults learning recreationally in lessons: a narrative inquiry

Leahy, Kaitlyn Sarah 02 January 2024 (has links)
Using the Compassionate Music Teaching (CMT) framework as a lens, in this study I explored the ways that teachers of adults learning recreationally in music lessons may align their teaching approaches to learners’ adult-specific needs. Adult education scholars have accentuated the need for facilitators of adult learning to consider adult learners’ life experiences, circumstances, and identities (Merriam & Baumgartner, 2020). Researchers studying adults learning music have similarly identified the ways in which adults appreciate opportunities to ask questions, share in discussions, and be a part of the decision-making processes related to their music learning (Creech et al., 2020; Creech et al., 2014; Rohwer, 2012). In alignment with adult education and music education scholarship, the CMT framework offers an approach through which teachers may connect with learners as people to support their musical and personal growth (Hendricks, 2018). However, as Roulston et al. (2015) identified, an approach has not yet been proposed specifically for the teaching and learning of adult music learners. Whereas one might assume that a lack of adult-specific teaching techniques may not pose an issue in a one-on-one setting, there is evidence that even when teachers make efforts to meet adult learners’ needs in lessons, they are not always successful (Leahy & Smith, 2021). Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the ways, if any, that teachers of adults engaged and empowered adults learning in recreational music lesson settings. Through the process of narrative inquiry, I engaged with participants in guided conversations to explore their processes of becoming musicians and educators and the ways they engaged compassionately with their adult students. I share the findings of the narrative inquiry through a series of re-storied vignettes. The findings of this study highlighted adult-specific needs that arose from the participants’ narratives and the ways that the teachers enacted qualities of CMT (trust, empathy, patience, inclusion, community, authentic connection) as they worked to meet those needs. I explore these needs under four categories: (a) following learner goals and objectives, (b) acting as a guide, (c) respecting learners’ full humanity, and (d) supporting musical belonging. The results of this study contribute to extant research by offering further insight into adults’ music learning needs, offering teachers of adults approaches through which may better meet learner needs, and expanding the CMT framework to include the experiences of adults learning recreationally.

Aufbauender Musikunterricht vs. Musikpraxen erfahren?

Gies, Stefan, Wallbaum, Christopher 17 December 2012 (has links) (PDF)
The article deals with similarities and differences between a music teaching concept "Music teaching step by step" and an alternative one which is specified as a concept of aesthetic and cultural education known as "Experiencing musical practices". Topics are exposed in four sections: (1) common positions, (2) the role of popular music within "Music teaching step by step" as well as within "Experiencing musical practices", (3) what does "music" mean? and (4) objections and replies. The fourth section is presenting a dialogue, dealing with the relation between learning situations in the classroom and musical experience, as well as with the specific normativity of the music teaching concepts. Moreover, this chapter is asking, if the concepts are appropriate to the subject's and to the pupil's needs and if these concepts take into account the ratio of instructive teaching versus open teaching-learning situations as tools to increase the learning outcomes. The particular understanding of what we mean by "music" is seen to be crucial for music teaching concepts.

Pedagogias abertas e o modelo artístico no ensino do violão para iniciantes / Open pedagogies and the artistic model in guitar teaching for beginners.

Barros, Fábio Carrilho Santos 29 September 2017 (has links)
This dissertation aims to point out possible paths and reflections for a creative guitar pedagogy in harmony with contemporary proposals of musical education that are based on open pedagogies and the artistic model of music teaching. Both concepts form the foundation of the pedagogical-musical thinking of the Latin American Musical Education Forum (FLADEM). The open pedagogies propose the overcoming of rigid curricular structures and planned teaching procedures that do not take the students\' interests into consideration. The artistic model of music teaching integrates the concept of open pedagogies and implies to work with music from the music itself, with the knowledge being constructed from the experiences lived by the students, which include creative practices, such as composition and improvisation. The pedagogical work of Violeta de Gainza (b. 1929) and authors associated with FLADEM as well the pedagogical legacy of German musician and educator Hans- Joachim Koelleutter (1915-2005) were used as theoretical references due to the close proximity of their thinking with the concepts of open pedagogies and the artistic model. I will also analyze what I call the \"geographical approach\" of the guitar as a pedagogical tool for the development of creative practices. This musical resource consists of the exploration of the instrument from its physical aspects, something notably present in the guitar literature on the works of Villa-Lobos (1887-1959), Abel Carlevaro (1906-2001), Leo Brouwer (b.1939) among others. Specific questions about classroom strategies involving subjects such as composition, improvisation, instrumental experimentation, technical development, sonority, phrasing, music theory, notation and playing by ear are also objectives of this dissertation. The practical part analyzed encompasses two categories: the pedagogical experiences with guitar students of FIAM-FAAM and of the Teca Oficina de Música, which are educational institutions located in São Paulo, and my own compositional experiences corresponding to the \"Desenhos\" series of guitar studies. Among the aspects observed, the creativity, the artistic profile and the pedagogical formation of the instrumental teacher were considered to be essential for the development of this model of teaching with beginners.

The aims of this research include: to analyse the theoretical bases used in the Art Curriculum Guidelines of the State of Paraná; to historicise public policies for art/music teaching implemented in Paraná from 1990 to 2010; to investigate the conditions under which the Art Curriculum Guidelines of the State of Paraná were implemented, taking into account that such conditions were provided by the State Department of Education (SEED); to know what concepts of art teaching the interviewed managers hold; to find out how the DCE are managed in specific educational entities (Art Coordination Division of the Regional Centre of Ponta Grossa and management staff of some schools in the city of Ponta Grossa) This research is based on the historical and dialectical materialism, focusing on the categories of contradiction and totality (CURY, 1989; KOSIK, 1976; LUKÁCS, 1978) in order to apprehend the dialectics of both the formulation of policies proposed by the State and its management and interpretation in different educational entities. Some concepts, understood in relation to the object addressed herein, were studied and called into question in the data analysis based on some authors: State, public policies, policy management (GRAMSCI, 1991; BOBBIO, 1997; CARNOY, 1984; TAVARES, 2004; VIEIRA, 2007); art and art teaching (FIGUEIREDO, 2009, 2010; PENNA, 1995, 2001a, 2007, 2008b; SUBTIL, 2008, 2009a, 2009b; VÁZQUEZ, 1978). Data collection was carried out through the analysis of official documents related to the research object, as well as through semi-structured interviews with a teacher who took part in the policy formulation and is in charge of its management, a teacher who worked as an art consultant at the SEED, the coordinator teacher of the Art section of the Regional Education Centre of Ponta Grossa, and five principals of public schools in Ponta Grossa. The combination of the collected data with the theoretical references shows that: a) contradictions implicit in the historical movement whereby art was included in school education are expressed not only in the document text but also in the subjects‟ concepts and interpretations; b) the management of the Guidelines reflects the concepts of art and art/music teaching adopted by the subjects of the different educational entities; c) even though there are some conditions proposed by the State for the implementation of the policy referred to in the document, the concrete reality – in which the lack of material and human resources and the persistence of historically established concepts of art and art/music teaching are quite evident – doesn‟t contribute to putting into effect a proposal that represents an advance in terms of contents and concepts of art and art/music teaching.

Barros, Ricardo Abdalla. January 2019 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: This research has main theme is the higher education in Music on the State of São Paulo. Its focus on the teachers with bachelor degrees, teaching musical instrument and what would be necessary to overcome technical aspects on the teaching practice based on traditional models. The text begins by addressing university pedagogy and the challenges it faces in contemporary times. After these considerations, it gives a brief historical overview about the formalization of Music teaching. Given this scenario, it is concluded that Music entered the university based on a specific model, here called conservatory, which prioritizes European classical music over others. To address this issue, we begin to assemble the framework of teaching knowledge that will serve as the basis for the analyzes that will later be done. In this process, authors from both classical literature, such as Maurice Tardif, and from researchers dedicated to the study of teaching knowledge in Music are approached. The methodology starts from the principles of qualitative research in education, using content analysis to examine the data. The subjects of this research are all bachelors, instrument teachers in public higher education institutions of the State of São Paulo: USP, UNICAMP and UNESP. Data collection was performed in three moments: firstly, through an online questionnaire, made available to teachers through their e-mails; in the second moment, a semi-structured interview was applied to the teachers who wis... Music in the Year 8 Classroom: An Action Research Project

Hartwig, Kay, n/a January 2004 (has links)
The number of students electing to study music at the Senior Level in Queensland State High Schools has declined over recent years. Year 8 is the last time that students experience music lessons before being faced with subject choices. This study investigates the year 8 music program - its content and delivery. What can be done to improve music teaching in year 8? How can we present experiences at this level that will stimulate students' interest; improve their knowledge and skills; and develop students' aesthetic sensitivity to the art of music? This study involved conducting an action research project in a year 8 music class. This was done in collaboration with the classroom music teacher and her class of 25 students. The cyclical process as described by Zuber-Skerritt - acting, observing, reflecting, planning - was adopted. The study aimed: (a) to document positive experiences that could be used in the year 8 music classroom; (b) to stimulate new interest in the studying of senior music; (c) to discover ways to encourage music teachers to become reflective practitioners with a view to improving their practice; (d) to offer an action research model that other music teachers could implement in their classroom. The data collection involved the keeping of journals by the teacher and researcher; recorded interviews with the teacher and students; videos and photographs of the class; as well as interviews with other year 8 music teachers. The study identified a negative attitude by music teachers to the teaching of year 8 music. The dominant theme being taught at this level is Pop Music with a foundation unit being the starting point. Year 8 students also revealed a negative attitude to music lessons. This research project has demonstrated that it is possible to set up a program which engages year 8 students in music making and provides them with worthwhile learning experiences. However, at the end of the project, there was not a significant increase in the number of students electing to study music at the senior level. The study also set up a model for action research that could be adopted by other music teachers in their classrooms. The results of reflective practice employed by the researcher and the music teacher provided positive attitudes for other music teachers and encouragement for others to implement this practice in their classroom. Further studies are needed to involve other music teachers in reflective practice; collaboration in action research (especially in the year 8 classroom); and also the implementation of the new syllabus that will have a positive effect on the future of the subject of music and a positive effect on students' attitudes to the music subject.
