Reyneke, Coenraad Jacobus Stephanus 11 May 2005 (has links)
This study sets of by investigating postmodernism and social constructionism. Postmodernism as 21st century world view (paradigm) influences everything in our lives, including the perspective from which a study is conducted. An attempt is made to follow the development of modernism (and with it the so-called pre-modern) and postmodernism. This culminates in a summary of a postmodern perspective on reality and the practical consequences of postmodernism. Social constructionism emphasises the reality that discourses and even the self is socially constructed and therefore dependent on context, time and place. Social constructionism leads to questions about the normative role of the Bible in the study and a postmodern society. The metaphor "a circle of circles" and "a meeting" are employed to describe the application of God's Word in postmodern context. The constructing community determines the normative role of the Bible. Concepts such as the gift, God, and community are central concepts with regard to postmodernism and Christianity, and can therefore be useful during communication of the gospel to postmodern people. Narrative research in the field of Practical Theology assumes practical theological wisdom (knowledge) of people to be a legitimate and rich resource for knowledge and understanding of certain experience within a certain context. This study employs a Postfoundationalist Practical Theology as a framework for narrative research. The adaptation process of the Vermaak family as result of a migration from South Africa to New Zealand was researched. The first movement of the of the framework explores context. New Zealand/Aotearoa, Hawera (the town they settled in) and the family within their parish (Baptist Hawera) is described as the context. The researcher's own context is also taken in consideration as an attempt to establish subjective integrity. The second movement describes the experiences of the Vermaaks just before and approximately a year after their move to New Zealand. During the third movement the experiences are interpreted in collaboration with co-researchers. Traditions of interpretations (discourses) that influenced their process of adaptation is described in the fourth movement. The next step was an attempt to honestly structure the family's experience of God's presence during this significant event in their lives. Insight from interdisciplinary investigation, mainly into psychology, is used during the sixth movement to further enrich and thicken understanding of the process. Lastly a few insights were formulated that may be useful beyond the researcher and co-researchers. An awareness and knowledge of postmodernism and social constructionism (the current 21st century paradigms) facilitates interpretation and understanding of experiences. A thorough grasp of narrative concepts is helpful to the process of adaptation after an overseas move. An active Christian faith provides a stable identity which contributes to a meaningful and successful adaptation process. / Thesis (PhD (Practical Theology))--University of Pretoria, 2006. / Practical Theology / unrestricted

兩位華語老師談二語學習歷程:視覺化分析敘事流程、學習自主與觀眾反應之互動關係 / Two Chinese Teachers Narrating Their L2 Learning Journeys: Visual Analysis on the Interaction of Narrating Flow, Language Learning Agency, and Audience Response

Li, Yan Zhen Unknown Date (has links)
Drawing on theories of identity and agency (particularly, Coffey, 2013), this qualitative case study scrutinizes how language learner identities and agencies are performed in group storytelling sections. The participants involved are two Chinese teachers with distinct narrative styles: one tells her stories quite uneventfully; while the other intentionally shaped her stories according to audience response, making the storytelling section full of laughter. Both oral and written narratives were gathered for holistic-form analysis which resulted in two matrix displays of running time, response intensity, and levels of learner agency as the participants narrated critical events in their language learning trajectories. These matrixes helped reveal how the three intersected and changed and how the participants narrated the changing identities and agency in the L2 stories that they lived through. This study contributes to the approach of data analysis in narrative study by utilizing graphical presentations to facilitate visualization and analysis of the interaction between and among the storytelling time/context, the participants’ language learner agency, and audience response. It also pays close attention to details in how the learner story is told and in what kind of group dynamics as well as reveals different possible levels of self-exposure: that is, audience-centered and non-audience-centered narrative styles. In addition, the study alerts narrative researchers of the possibility that true emotions will be hidden and important details will be avoided when the narrator performs high agency in discourse, particularly with too many short plots in their stories. It is also clear that when there is high intensity in changing discourse it is often involved emotionally charged negative episodes that deserve careful scrutiny. Since context and audience could affect the form, flow, and content of narratives, one-on-one interview is suggested for future study to avoid limitations introduced by group storytelling sections.

Du Preez, Hannelie 27 August 2010 (has links)
Die moeder som haar belewing van outisme die beste op met die inspirerende aanhaling van Emily Pearl Kingsley: “Say goodbye to the child you wanted, or else your focus will never be with the child you have.” / ENGLISH : The rationale for this study was to gain a better understanding of what it means to be the mother of a child with autism, through the use of narrative research accounts. The mother (participant), and I (researcher) furthermore utilized the sources of collected data, such as her life story, to identify components of emotional intelligence with the purpose of additional interpretation. A narrative research design, firmly rooted in an interpretivist and constructivist paradigm, should therefore serve to accurately interpret the significant emotions and other lived-experiences that a mother attaches to living with a child that has been diagnosed with autism. A multi-method approach, directed by a qualitative research approach and a narrative research design, was followed in an attempt to capture the mother‘s experiences and life story. Data collection strategies employed to generate an in-depth, rich and personal life story consisted of the following activities: an informal interview, memory box (collages, anecdotes, life line, and methaphors) and an intellectual discussion regarding emotional intelligence. The mother also participated in a collaborative discussion to identify emotional intelligence components relevant to her life story. Further collaboration and discussion with the mother were required to ensure that the data were organised, analysed and interpreted according to the mother‘s lived-experiences of autism, along with her emotions that were identified on the basis of Bar-On‘s (2003) emotional intelligence components. The meaningful findings drawn from the mother‘s narratives (in relation to the identified emotional intelligence components) suggest that the mother demonstrates an optmistic, realistic and introspective view on parenting. It can be regarded as accountable for me as researcher to state that the mother displays an educated an comprehensive understanding of the disability with which her child is living. The mother perhaps best summarises her experiences of autism in the words of Emily Pearl Kingsley‘s inspirational words: “Say goodbye to the child you wanted, or else your focus will never be with the child you have.” / Dissertation (MEd)--University of Pretoria, 2010. / Educational Psychology / Unrestricted

Doudenkova, Victoria 12 1900 (has links)
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder in women of childbearing age. It has a significant impact on quality of life and is one of the major causes of infertility. It is also associated with serious chronic conditions such as type 2 diabetes, hormonedependent cancers, and cardiovascular disease. While it is prevalent and has serious consequences, women's experience of care reflects problematic dimensions: lack of awareness and information, delays in diagnosis, insensitivity, inattention, and trivialization. Research shows that women are dissatisfied with commonly prescribed treatments such as the contraceptive pill. They report lacking treatment options and would be interested in other modalities of care. Research on PCOS also emphasizes the importance of lifestyle (e.g. nutrition and stress management) that can improve the metabolic and endocrine profile and have a positive impact on reproductive function. The general lack of attention to this condition is thus an interesting case study, reflecting systemic injustices in medicine. The objective of this thesis is to examine issues related to the autonomy of women affected by PCOS in the context of health care and fertility, and to propose ways to promote the expression of autonomy. The thesis analyzes these issues in the context of chronic disease, whereby treatment focuses on alleviating infertility and neglects restorative approaches to health, particularly through effective lifestyle changes. The analysis is based on the conceptual framework of relational autonomy, and considers two possible modes of autonomy expression: episodic and programmatic. Awareness of these issues makes it possible to reflect on what a holistic approach could bring to PCOS care, considering both disease management and a restorative approach to health. To consider the ethical challenges related to the care of PCOS, this thesis employs both a conceptual-normative and an empirical perspective. Both allow a better understanding of the shortcomings of the current medical approach and an informed recommendation for better ways of responding to these challenges. By recognizing the need for prevention and management of PCOS, as well as a restorative approach to health, this thesis has substantial implications for healthcare professionals and women, suggesting ways of supporting both episodic and programmatic autonomy and empowerment of affected women.

Narrative reflections on charismatic discursive practices

Christodoulou, Esther 30 November 2003 (has links)
The purpose for this research journey was twofold: (1) to discover the power of certain discourses in the charismatic church context and (2) to challenge disrespectful discursive practices in order to co-operate respectful, ethical and caring ways of being. Seven leaders in charismatic churches committed themselves to this qualitative research project. The research process resulted in a confirmation by the participants that some charismatic discursive practices can be abusive and also to the acknowledgement that they too have at times fulfilled the role of abuser, even in unknowingly. This research journey ended in Hope. Hope for more transparency and trust between leaders and members, resulting in more respectful practices. / Practical Theology / M.Th. (Pastoral Therapy)

Re-storying identities: Young women's narratives of teenage parenthood and educational support

Hindin-Miller, Jennifer Margaret January 2012 (has links)
Teenage parenting is widely constructed in prevailing research and public discourse as a social problem, with poor outcomes for parent and child. Teenage parents are regarded as a drain on state funds, too young to parent well, and at high risk of social exclusion, both educationally and economically. This thesis proposes that teenage motherhood is a turning point in a young woman’s life and identity, which can be an opportunity, rather than a problem, if there is adequate support for the mother and her child. It considers the role of a New Zealand School for Teenage Parents in providing this support. Using qualitative narrative methodology, ten young women, six family members and nine other members of the School community were interviewed about their experiences of its culture and practices. Six of the young women were also interviewed to gather their life stories. Informed by the narrative understanding that we story our identities from the narrative possibilities available to us within the varied discursive contexts of our lives, this thesis draws on these life stories to explore how the young women storied the fashioning of their own identities as young women, as learners and as young parents. It presents their stories of childhood and family life, teenage-hood and schooling, pregnancy and parenthood, their experiences at the School for Teenage Parents, and their lives since leaving the School, in order to consider the role of the School in supporting the positive refashioning of their identities. This thesis draws on social constructionist and narrative theories to interpret the storied contexts of the young women’s lives, and the role these often constraining and difficult contexts played in the fashioning of their multiple identities. Māori culturally responsive pedagogical theories are also drawn on to interpret the culture of the School for Teenage Parents, and its attempts to provide a supportive and affirming family or whānau environment for its students, in order to offer them more positive narrative possibilities of self and identity as young women, as learners and as young parents.
