Forward and Inverse Problems Under Uncertainty / Problèmes directets et inverses Sous incertitudeZhang, Wenlong 27 June 2017 (has links)
This thesis contains two different subjects. In first part, two cases are considered. One is the thin plate spline smoother model and the other one is the elliptic boundary equations with uncertain boundary data. In this part, stochastic convergences of the finite element methods are proved for each problem. In second part, we provide a mathematical analysis of the linearized inverse problem in multifrequency electrical impedance tomography. We present a mathematical and numerical framework for a procedure of imaging anisotropic electrical conductivity tensor using a novel technique called Diffusion Tensor Magneto-acoustography and propose an optimal control approach for reconstructing the cross-property factor relating the diffusion tensor to the anisotropic electrical conductivity tensor. We prove convergence and Lipschitz type stability of the algorithm and present numerical examples to illustrate its accuracy. The cell model for Electropermeabilization is demonstrated. We study effective parameters in a homogenization model. We demonstrate numerically the sensitivity of these effective parameters to critical microscopic parameters governing electropermeabilization..

Trycksårsprevention i den perioperativa omvårdnaden : en observationsstudie / Prevention of pressure ulcer during the perioperative care : an observational studyKarlsson, Elin January 2016 (has links)
Introduction: Pressure ulcers are a common health problem that can be a complication in surgical procedures. It means a great suffering for the patient, but also a cost to society. The surgical team has a special challenge to prevent pressure ulcers that occur in the operating room. It´s because all patients who undergo surgery have an increased risk of developing pressure ulcers because of the unique risk factors that an operation means for the patient. Aim: The purpose of this study was to investigate the methods that the surgical team use to prevent pressure ulcer in patients during surgery. Method: The study was conducted as an observational study with quantitative approach. The study included 20 observations of surcial teams on a hospital in south Sweden. An observation protocol was created to capture the preventive methods the surgical team used. Results: The surgical team depressurized the patients heels and occiput with pillows. The surgical team was warming the patient intraoperatively, made sure that the patient was not lying with legs crossed or laid on a warm surface. The staff adjusted the operating table to the patient's needs. Several possible methods to prevent pressure ulcers that was not used or rarely used, was also observed. The surgical team did not reposition the patient every two hours, equipment and staff were allowed to press against the patient and layers of material laid between the patient and the pressure ulcer preventing mattress. Conclusion: The surgical team used pressure ulcer preventive methods to decrease the risks of pressure ulcer in the patients. However, there were a number of pressure ulcers prevention methods that were rarely used.

Gustafsson, Tina January 2016 (has links)
ABSTRACT Background: Previous studies showed that patients are affected both physically and mentally when they transferring from one environment to another. To be transferred from the specialized, high-tech intensive care to a ward can create experiences and feelings of stress, worry, anxiety, insecurity, depression, sleep disorders, memory loss, and nightmares with more. Aim: The aim of this study was to explore how environmental design for care affects the patient's well-being after transfer from intensive care to the surgical ward. Method: The aim was answered with help from repeated observations with informal interviews with three patients who had been treated in an intensive care unit and had been transferred to a surgical ward. Deductive content analysis was used and was based on a previously created model. Result: The patients' well-being was affected by the environment after transfer to the surgical ward. The results are presented according to the categories atmosphere, entourage, surroundings, midpoint and relationship. Conclusion: Be transferred to a lower level of care as a ward is a big change for the patients both physically and psychologically. The result supports that there is a knowledge gap which consist of differences in the environment, differences in nurses' skills and differences in communication between intensive care units and wards. It is important that there are clear procedures on how an intensive care patient to be received and cared for at the transfer to a ward. To move from one environment to another should not be too extensive for the patient can first be transfer place to an Intermediate Care Facility before further transfer to a ward occurs.

The structure of galaxies : the division of stellar mass by morphological type and structural componentKelvin, Lee Steven January 2013 (has links)
The mechanisms which cause galaxies to form and evolve each leave behind distinct structural markers in their wake. Dynamically hot processes (e.g., monolithic collapse, hierarchical merging) give rise to pressure-supported spheroidal structures, including elliptical galaxies and classical bulges. By contrast, dynamically cold processes (e.g., gas accretion, AGN splashback) lead to flattened rotationally-supported disk-like structures, often found on their own or as part of a spiral galaxy. If left in isolation for a sufficient length of time, secular evolutionary processes cause the formation of a bar-like structure within the disk, precipitating the genesis of a rotationally-supported pseudo-bulge. Robustly measuring galaxy structure enables us to ascertain the relative importance of these competing evolutionary mechanisms and; in so doing, help broaden our understanding of how the Universe around us came to be. This thesis explores the relation between galaxy structure, morphology and stellar mass. In the first part I present single-Sérsic two-dimensional model fits to 167,600 galaxies modelled independently in the ugrizYJHK bandpasses using reprocessed Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release Seven (SDSS DR7) and UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey Large Area Survey (UKIDSS LAS) imaging data available via the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) data base. In order to facilitate this study, we developed Structural Investigation of Galaxies via Model Analysis (SIGMA): an automated wrapper around several contemporary astronomy software packages. We confirm that variations in global structural measurements with wavelength arise due to the effects of dust attenuation and stellar population/metallicity gradients within galaxies. In the second part of this thesis we establish a volume-limited sample of 3,845 galaxies in the local Universe and visually classify these galaxies according to their morphological Hubble type. We find that single-Sérsic photometry accurately reproduces the morphology luminosity functions predicted in the literature. We employ multi-component Sérsic profiling to provide bulge-disk decompositions for this sample, allowing for the luminosity and stellar mass to be divided between the key structural components: spheroids and disks. Grouping the stellar mass in these structures by the evolutionary mechanisms that formed them, we find that hot-mode collapse, merger or otherwise turbulent mechanisms account for ~46% of the total stellar mass budget, cold-mode gas accretion and splashback mechanisms account for ~48% of the total stellar mass budget and secular evolutionary processes for ~6.5% of the total stellar mass budget in the local (z<0.06) Universe.

Generic refinements for behavioral specificationsPetria, Marius January 2011 (has links)
This thesis investigates the properties of generic refinements of behavioral specifications. At the base of this investigation stands the view from algebraic specification that abstract data types can be modeled as algebras. A specification of a data type is formed from a syntactic part, i.e. a signature detailing the interface of the data type, and a semantic part, i.e. a class of algebras (called its models) that contains the valid implementations of that data type. Typically, the class of algebras that constitutes the semantics of a specification is defined as the class of algebras that satisfy some given set of axioms. The behavioral aspect of a specification comes from relaxing the requirements imposed by axioms, i.e. by allowing in the semantics of a specification not only the algebras that literally satisfy the given axioms, but also those algebras that appear to behave according to those axioms. Several frameworks have been developed to express the adequate notions of what it means to be a behavioral model of a set of axioms, and our choice as the setting for this thesis will be Bidoit and Hennicker’s Constructor-based Observational Logic, abbreviated COL. Using specifications that rely on the behavioral aspects defined by COL we study the properties of generic refinements between specifications. Refinement is a relation between specifications. The refinement of a target specification by a source specification is given by a function that constructs models of the target specification from the models of the source specification. These functions are called constructions and the source and target specifications that they relate are called the context of the refinement. The theory of refinements between algebraic specifications, with or without the behavioral aspect, has been well studied in the literature. Our analysis starts from those studies and adapts them to COL, which is a relatively new framework, and for which refinement has been studied only briefly. The main part of this thesis is formed by the analysis of generic refinements. Generic refinements are represented by constructions that can be used in various contexts, not just in the context of their definition. These constructions provide the basis for modular refinements, i.e. one can use a locally defined construction in a global context in order to refine just a part of a source specification. The ability to use a refinement outside its original context imposes additional requirements on the construction that represents it. An implementer writing such a construction must not use details of the source models that can be contradicted by potential global context requirements. This means, roughly speaking, that he must use only the information available in the source signature and also any a priori assumption that was made about the contexts of use. We look at the basic case of generic refinements that are reusable in every global context, and then we treat a couple of variations, i.e. generic refinements for which an a priori assumption it is made about the nature of their usage contexts. In each of these cases we follow the same pattern of investigation. First we characterize the constructions that ensure reusability by means of preservation of relations, and then, in most cases, we show that such constructions must be definable in terms of their source signature. Throughout the thesis we use an informal analogy between generic (i.e. polymorphic) functions that appear in second order lambda calculus and the generic refinements that we are studying. This connection will enable us to describe some properties of generic refinements that correspond to the properties of polymorphic functions inferred from their types and named “theorems for free” by Wadler. The definability results, the connection between the assumptions made about the usage contexts and the characterizing relations, and the “theorems for free” for behavioral specifications constitute the main contributions of this thesis.

ACCESS I. AN OPTICAL TRANSMISSION SPECTRUM OF GJ 1214b REVEALS A HETEROGENEOUS STELLAR PHOTOSPHERERackham, Benjamin, Espinoza, Néstor, Apai, Dániel, López-Morales, Mercedes, Jordán, Andrés, Osip, David J., Lewis, Nikole K., Rodler, Florian, Fraine, Jonathan D., Morley, Caroline V., Fortney, Jonathan J. 10 January 2017 (has links)
GJ. 1214b is the most studied sub-Neptune exoplanet to date. Recent measurements have shown its near-infrared transmission spectrum to be flat, pointing to a high-altitude opacity source in the exoplanet 's atmosphere, either equilibrium condensate clouds or photochemical hazes. Many photometric observations have been reported in the optical by different groups, though simultaneous measurements spanning the entire optical regime are lacking. We present an optical transmission spectrum (4500-9260 angstrom) of GJ. 1214b in 14 bins, measured with Magellan/IMACS repeatedly over three transits. We measure a mean planet-to-star radius ratio of Rp R-s = 0.1146. 2 x 10(-4) and mean uncertainty of sigma(R-p/R-s) = 8.7 x 10(-4) in the spectral bins. The optical transit depths are shallower on average than observed in the near-infrared. We present a model for jointly incorporating the effects of a composite photosphere and atmospheric transmission through the exoplanet's limb (the CPAT model), and use it to examine the cases of absorber and temperature heterogeneities in the stellar photosphere. We find the optical and near-infrared measurements are best explained by the combination of (1) photochemical haze in the exoplanetary atmosphere with a mode particle size r = 0.1 mu m and haze-forming efficiency f(haze) = 10% and (2) faculae in the unocculted stellar disk with a temperature contrast Delta T= 354(-46)(+46) K, assuming 3.2% surface coverage. The CPAT model can be used to assess potential contributions of heterogeneous stellar photospheres to observations of exoplanet transmission spectra, which will be important for searches for spectral features in the optical.
