Romaniuc-Boularand, Bianca 19 November 2010 (has links)
The notion of rhythm provides the studys anchoring principle. Here the rhythm ofCélines prose is apprehended in its lexical dimension, with particular attention to a 5guiding theme, namely that of jazz music. In the first part, the jazz theme isfore-grounded through an examination of Célines orthographic variations andspecifically to his idiosyncratic use of small and capital letters. It also brings to bearthe varied effect of the use of the pronoun on. The second part of the thesis isdevoted to the topic of improvisation. It presents an analysis of ways in which formal, functional and semantic neologisms are rendered in Rumanian translations. Finally, the third part seks to identify several governing principles of a poetic dimension inCélines novel, which often pose a challenge to translators, such as lexicalrecurrence, semantic profusion, literal usage and the arbitrary relation of signifiers. This thesis proposes an analytical contribution to scholarschip on Céline through aclose, « practico-theoretical reading of the text

Facteurs cognitifs liés à l'acquisition du lexique orthographique

Stanké, Brigitte 08 1900 (has links)
The objective of the present thesis was to study the relation between cognitive factors (phonological treatment, visuo-attentional and lexical orthographic memory) and the acquisition of implicit and explicit orthographic knowledge. A longitudinal study was conducted on a sample of 338 children from the kindergarten to their second year of primary schooling. At the end of kindergarten, the tasks were an invented spelling test and tests assessing the cognitive factors at issue in the apprenticeship of written speech (phonological treatment, visuo-attentional treatment and short and long term memory). The lexical explicit orthographic knowledge of these same children was evaluated at the end of their first and second year of school. The objective of the first study was to establish a link between the phonological treatment, visuo-attentional and orthographic lexical memory abilities and implicit orthographic knowledge of the children, before their formal apprenticeship of written speech. The results showed that, contrary to what was long been advanced, the phonological treatment is not the only cognitive factor into play since the long term orthographic lexical memory ability as well as the visuo-attentional ability properly and independently contribute to the acquisition of orthographic knowledge. The orthographic lexical memory is the factor which provides the strongest contribution. The aim of the second study was to determine which cognitive factors assessed in kindergarten predict the subsequent explicit orthographic knowledge in first and second grades. The results showed that the necessary conditions to the acquisition of lexical orthographic knowledge are phonological treatment ability, as well as short and long term memory abilities. The goal of third article was to bring to light the predictive role played by the spelling knowledge of kindergarten children to their orthographical knowledge in first and second grades, in connection with the cognitive abilities which are at the root of the apprenticeship of the written spelling, more particularly the phonological treatment, the visuo-attentional treatment and orthographic lexical memory. The regressive analyses showed that, among the factors investigated in kindergarten, the implicit orthographical knowledge brings a unique contribution to the subsequent spelling knowledge evaluated by different orthographic tasks in first and second grades. The important impact of early orthographical knowledge on the subsequent acquisition is not surprising because the first study proved that this knowledge is not only depending on the capability of lexical orthographical memory but also on the capability of phonological treatment. The results coming from those three articles present a non-negligible interest in the understanding of the acquisition of the written speech. Indeed, these studies permitted to prove that, even before the formal apprenticeship of the writing, the child shows a genuine implicit knowledge of the written language. Moreover, and it is from this knowledge that the subsequent explicit knowledge will be built up. This knowledge is dependent upon multiple factors among which are the ability of orthographic lexical memory, a cognitive factor whose contribution was not yet proven. The results of this research showed that it is possible to consider early screening measures in order to identify children susceptible to present specific apprenticeship difficulties in the written language. This screening would allow an early and better targeted intervention, which would then reduce the impact of difficulties on the academic apprenticeships.

Questões ortográficas no foco da Historiografia Linguística: continuidades e descontinuidades no pensamento linguístico manifestado no séc. XVI e no séc. XXI

Serve in the theoretical basis also the work of Auroux (2009), whose considerations aim at the historian's role specification of linguistic ideas, which in our view is consistent with our role of historiographers of linguistics. As to the objectives, that approach prompts us to the understanding of how to unveil not only the linguistic thinking, but also political and ideological positioning of the Renaissance grammarians of Portuguese, Joao de Barros and Fernão de Oliveira, as well as the Portuguese intellectuals the twenty-first century, Vasco Graya Moura and Antonio Emiliano - who demonstrated against the Orthographic Agreement of 1990 - about the linguistic and orthographic issues of language. Corroborates the justification for carrying out our work, the prospect of Schilieben-Langue (1993, p.138), who matter to the description of the history of argumentative communities in which they discuss issues that relate to languages. Thus we have the background of human intervention in the language, or rather the Linguistic Policy, and more specifically, the issue of orthographic standard that is recurrent in history. As a hypothesis, we suggest that there is a confluence between the linguistic thought of men of two seasons marked precisely by their political-ideological attitude towards the language and orthographic issues. Now, taking into account that our analysis is constructed in order to relate ideas and linguistic practices in its social, cultural, political and institutional context (Cf. Swigger, 2009), and that the methodology of historical writing, which involves aspects of categorization, deep categorization and well-structured exhibition which allows the past to be rebuilt according to the categorization of the historian (Swiggers, 2012, p. 43), we can say, regarding the conclusions reached, this research fits into the hall a much continuist historiography, than, exactly, discontinuist. Aside from that, we can also say that what we had achieved here is the realization of a two historiographical dialogue, however, marked by an intersection point, which is observed by the very parallelistic structure of the writing of the thesis. Getting marked, precisely at this point of intersection, the continuities in the linguistic thought of the men of the two centuries that have positioned themselves politically and ideologically, before the language, worrying about the orthographic issues existing at different historic moments. Finally, we conclude that these men demonstrated, above all, a sense of ownership linked to a nationalist defense of the Portuguese language / Esta tese fundamenta-se teoricamente na Historiografia Linguística, disciplina cujos métodos, instituídos por Koerner (1996, 2014) e Swiggers (2009, 2012), permitem-nos delinear nosso objeto de estudo, qual seja: o pensamento linguístico manifestado pelos homens do século XVI e do século XXI a respeito das questões ortográficas que envolveram a Língua Portuguesa nos recortes temporais estabelecidos.

Stavning i årskurs 3 : En jämförelse av elevtexter skrivna av elever i och utan lässvårigheter / Spelling in grade 3 : A comparison of essays written by pupils with and without reading disabilities

Seijsing, Emma, Martin, Maria January 2019 (has links)

Construction of 3D CAD Models From 2D Orthographic Views

Bandla, Srinivasa Rao 09 1900 (has links)
This thesis addresses the problem of constructing 3D CAD models from 2D engineering drawings of the object. Procedures for each step in the popular bottom-up approach are described. In each of the steps in this approach, the capability is extended to handle classes of parts not handled by present art. These include auxiliary views, parts with curved entities that are inclined to all viewing directions, and views that result in non-manifold edges in the surface model. In addition this thesis also presents procedures to extract features from the solid model constructed so that the 3D model can be manipulated and modified within current CAD systems. In order to enable extracting the construction history, detecting symmetry in the part is essential. This thesis presents an algorithm to detect symmetry (both global and partial) in the part given the solid model of the part. Working of the procedures is illustrated using benchmark parts from the literature. The thesis concludes with a discussion on scope for further work.

Conceptual expression and depictive opacity: Changing attitudes towards architectural drawings between 1960 and 1990

Kim, Hoyoung 07 January 2016 (has links)
This dissertation is a study of a remarkable change that came about in the kind of drawings that architects used to present their work between the decades of 1960 and 1990. Drawings in this period, visually rich and compositionally complex, seemed to mark an entirely new sensibility towards their function; their goal seemed to be not so much to clearly depict the forms of a proposed building, but to instead focus on its conceptual aspects. In fact, in several cases, drawings seemed to be treated as graphic projects in their own right, over and above the work they presented. This trend was accompanied by two other developments. Around the same time, there was a sudden increase in theoretical interest in drawings within the architectural community leading to a flurry of published articles, essays and books on the topic. And all this happened to coincide with the time that the Postmodern movement came to dominate architecture. The study aims to understand the relationship between these trends, and to develop a better understanding of the reasons for these changes to have occurred. It does so by, first, developing a theoretical framework to help understand the nature and impact of the changes in drawings. Next, it presents a detailed historical account of these changes. This is followed by an in-depth study of a single architect, James Stirling, to show how the new types of drawings were not simply a means to present ideas, but played a formative role in design as well. Apart from developing a contextualized historical account of an important development in contemporary architectural history, the study also finds that the change in the drawing practice and the theoretical interests were not simply an outcome of Postmodern cultural theory of the period, but were instigated by concerns that arose from within architecture itself. It thus offers a useful case-study on how changes in disciplinary practice are brought about.

January 2011 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: The primary purpose of this thesis is to outline phonetic and phonological adaptations made by Brazilian speakers while pronouncing foreign anthroponyms, especially those derived from English. The topic discussed is straightly linked to the determination of a phonological identity of Portuguese. The study focuses on linguistic and extralinguistic aspects, which allow two different views on the subject. The first, based on social-historical grounds, retakes previous reflections on anthroponyms and their relevance to different people and cultures since ancient times. Under this perspective, the survey deals with discursive issues related to the act of naming people. The second view, based on structural linguistic grounds, is the main focus of the study, which is essentially conducted in the light of non-linear phonological models. By means of phonological contrastive analysis, similarities and differences are highlighted concerning the source language, American English (AE) and the target language, Brazilian Portuguese (BP). The corpus comprises anthroponyms typical of the English language as well as proper names whose spelling refer to this idiom. The names selection was based on attendance sheets from State Schools in the city of São Luís, MA. Recordings were carried out with both native English and Portuguese speakers, aiming at mapping the main phonological processes employed by these subjects when producing the foreign anthroponyms. Subjective matters were investigated through interviews that point out motivational reasons parents had for choosing foreign athroponyms; users satisfaction with their own name, as well as their appreciation for the English language. Following data transcriptions, the research presents the main observed adaptations motivated by speakers' native phonological system, such as: a) addition of the epenthetic vowel [i], resulting... / The primary purpose of this thesis is to outline phonetic and phonological adaptations made by Brazilian speakers while pronouncing foreign anthroponyms, especially those derived from English.
