The Sacred Pilgrimage : The Concept of Truth in the Life and Work of Lars Skytte

Wärnberg, Karl Gustel January 2017 (has links)
This thesis studies the life and work of Lars Skytte (1610-1696), a Swedish Ambassador to Portugal who converted to Catholicism and became a Franciscan theologian, in relation to the concept of Truth. For Skytte, Truth and Catholicism are synonymous. The thesis focuses on his semi-autobiographical book Peregrinatio sancta fratris Laurentii a D. P. Sueci (1658). As a sort of intellectual biography, this study aims at situating Skytte within the context of post- reformation rhetoric and theological thought. The main question guiding the thesis is in what way Lars Skytte argues for the Truth of the Catholic Church, as opposed to what he terms ‘schismatic’ and ‘heretical’ movements. Following a set of identified arguments for the Catholic Church as the religio vera, the thesis looks at how they are employed in various ways to answer the overarching question.

[en] INTRODUCTION TO CONSERVATIVE THINKING IN THE 20TH CENTURY AND EARLY 21ST CENTURY: FROM THE IDEAS OF G.K. CHESTERTON TO THE NEW RIGHT / [pt] INTRODUÇÃO AO PENSAMENTO CONSERVADOR DO SÉCULO XX E INÍCIO DO SÉCULO XXI: DAS IDEIAS DE G. K. CHESTERTON ATÉ A NOVA DIREITA BRASILEIRA

MARIO JORGE DE PAIVA 20 December 2021 (has links)
[en] This thesis aims to study conservative thinking in contemporary times, thus focusing on the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century. Our work involves qualitative research, which encompasses different fields of knowledge, ranging from political anthropology to the field of history of ideas. We will present a wide range of texts by national and international conservative thinkers. And we will use a broad theoretical framework to analyze them. There are common elements, even in the midst of the polysemy of the concept of conservatism, where there is a relationship between the present and the past of tradition.

Prosper d’Aquitaine contre Jean Cassien Introduction, édition critique, traduite et annotée du Liber contra collatorem / Prosper of Aquitaine against John Cassian : Introduction, critical edition and annotated translation of the Liber contra collatorem

Delmulle, Jérémy 02 June 2014 (has links)
The Liber contra collatorem is a treatise written in 432-433 by Prosper of Aquitaine, who refutes the positions taken by a certain “lecturer”, by which John Cassian is meant, author of the Conferences. As an advocate of Augustine and of his doctrine of grace, Prosper has provided in this work most fully his criticism of the theories expressed by the bishop of Hippo’s Southern-French opponents. In order to do this, Prosper built only on excerpts from Conference nr. 13, “On the protection of God”. The first part of this thesis addresses the principal aspects of the work: the purpose of the treatise, the modus operandi, the literary genre, polemical practices, and theological issues. In doing so, this thesis defends the hypothesis that Prosper wrote his treatise in order to assemble a sufficiently argued file to obtain an official condemnation by the bishop of Rome of what has been called “Semipelagianism” and thus the recognition of the authority of the Augustinian doctrine of grace. The second part presents a study of the manuscript tradition of the treatise and of its medieval testimonies, which allows unraveling a rich and complex textual history. Hence, a new edition is justified, the first critical one, correcting and replacing the textus receptus dating from 1711, which is problematic at various points. The edition here presented is provided with a French translation and annotated in order to cast light on the most important or les easily comprehensible passages of the text.

Literary features of anti-Christian polemics in Antiquity

Piscini, Gianluca 13 December 2018 (has links)
This work deals with the fragments of Celsus’ True Discourse, Porphyry’s Against the Christians, Hierocles’ Truthful Discourse to the Christians and Julian’s Against the Galileans. Its purpose is to study the way these anti-Christian treatises use the literary tradition of Antiquity. In the first part, we discuss some problems related to the study of these works. In a second part, we study the polemical use of literary references in these texts. A third part is devoted to ad hominem attacks against biblical characters and against Christians. Finally, a fourth part studies the literary form of these works : the choice of the title and the audience, but also their structure and their literary genre.

Le Législateur incertain. Recherches sur la contribution ascétique de Basile de Césarée / The Uncertain Legislator Research on Basil of Caesarea’s Ascetic Contribution

Perrot, Arnaud 12 December 2016 (has links)
The Ascetica transmitted under the name of Basil of Caesarea have a special importance among the numerous monastic writings which emerged in the 4th century. If this point is very well-known, the gathering of the corpus asceticum, the multiple antique editions of the collection, and the doctrinal options which are found in this sum have not been really enlightened. On the basis of neglected textual and paleographic evidence, the present work aims at rewriting the history of the text and questioning the basilian paternity of the collection. From the 5th century to the Modern Times, some readers refused the attribution of the Ascetica to Basil the Great and preferred to ascribe them to another (but problematic) bishop of the 4th century: Eustathius of Sebasteia. If there are good reasons to reject the basilian paternity of the collection, it is necessary to reevaluate the role played by Basil of Caesarea in the literary history of the monastic movement. In the present volume, I try to re-read some literary texts which, until now, were just regarded as appendices to the dossier of the Ascetica.

A construção discursiva do sistema de cotas na revista "Caros Amigos" / Discursive construction concerning the system of quotas in the magazine "Caros Amigos"

No. of bitstreams: 1 Irene de Lima Freitas.pdf: 12331661 bytes, checksum: 98e3a0aaa0b640521f329bf8bea765c1 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-08-11 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This research aims at discussing how the construction of the discourse concerning quotas in Brazil happens in the media, and how it is fits into the debate about exclusion/inclusion of the Negroes in the Brazilian society. Due to the vastness of the issue, the object of the study was chosen, taking into consideration, firstly, the year 2002, the period of most commotion in the media, relating to the discursive impact of exclusion, having as the background the issue of the quotas. During this year, a publication that systematically wrote about the subject was the magazine Caros Amigos. Thus, considering that the Legislative Assembly of the State of Rio de Janeiro instituted quotas of up to 40% for the access of the Negro and dark population to the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro, based on Law number 3,708, dated 9 November 2011, the magazine was the one chosen to be analyzed, as from the editions published in the months of June to November 2002. Before the analysis in itself, and in order to fundament it historically, we searched for information about the antecedents of this policy called affirmative action aiming at understanding which elements helped to bring about the fact of such measures being taken up in Brazil. Secondly, we chose, in the total of editions selected, 5 articles, 6 letters from readers and 6 magazine covers, all dealing with the matter of quotas and we considered each one of them as verbal and/or verbo-visual utterances. We understand utterances as discursive practices that enable the study and understanding of their functioning as from the crisscrossing of the materiality of the language present in them, as well as the conditions of production, circulation and reception that serve as background. The basic theoretical and methodological perspective is the dialogical theory/analysis of discourse, as put forward in the works of M. Bakhtin and his Circle, especially in that it refers to the notions of verbal interaction, utterance and forms of presence in the discourse of the other. The social relevance of this research is due to the importance that the policy concerning quotas took on in the Brazilian society and also due to the fact that it explores the issue in a dialogic perspective, in other words, understanding interaction as the founding principle of language which articulates in specific historical, social and cultural contexts. It is also relevant to investigate verbal and verbo-visual texts/discourses considering a culture magazine, in this case, Caros Amigos. As a result of the study, it may be stated that the multiple voices and senses present in the texts that make up the corpus - magazine covers, articles, letters from readers - show that the magazine builds up its editorial positioning before the object of discourse, as from the value that interlocutors attribute to its construction; the polemic is part of the magazine editorial line of thought; the opposition between interlocutors determines the construction of the statements; while opening up space for discussions concerning different visions of the world, it contributes to social transformation; the dialogic analysis of the statements in the media contribute to a better understanding of the social nature of discourse as well as the subjects which are relevant to society, like the quota issue / Esta pesquisa tem por objetivo discutir como se dá, na média, a construção do discurso sobre o sistema de cotas no Brasil e como ele se insere no debate sobre a exclusão/inclusão dos negros na sociedade brasileira.

Egardt Fassarakis, Kassandra January 2022 (has links)
This essay is a comparative study of Judeo-Christian religion and religions from the ancient Middle East, mainly ancient Sumer/Mesopotamia and Egypt, with focus on the common symbols; the serpent, the cow and the tree. The comparison of the three symbols from different religious traditions highlights that there are both key differences and similarities. The differences and similarities are then explained with the help of professor Yair Zakovitch theory inverted reflections stories also referred to as mirror-narratives, which is an intertextual theory. The application of the theory helps to establish that many of the biblical myths are part of a large collection of polemical literature. A strategy within polemics was to invert symbols and motifs from the so called ”pagan” tradition and associate an old well known motif with the opposite meaning in the later biblical reinterpretations, or what Zakovitch identifies as mirror-narratives. The result of this study shows that the theory mirror-narratives is very fruitful in the comparison of Judeo-Christian religion and ”pagan” religions from the ancient Middle East.

'The Standard-bearer of the Roman Church' : Lorenzo da Brindisi (1559-1619) and Capuchin Missions in the Holy Roman Empire

Drenas, Andrew J. G. January 2014 (has links)
This thesis examines the missionary work of the Italian Capuchin Lorenzo da Brindisi. Renowned in his own day as a preacher, Bible scholar, missionary, chaplain, and diplomat, as well as vicar general of his Order, Lorenzo led the first organised, papally-commissioned Capuchin mission among the non-Catholics of Bohemia in the Holy Roman Empire from 1599 to 1602, and returned there, again under papal mandate, from 1606 to 1613. This thesis examines Lorenzo’s evangelistic and polemical activities in Central Europe in order to shed light on some of the ways the Capuchins laboured in religiously divided territories to confirm Catholics in their faith and to win over heretics. The introduction explains, principally, the thesis’s purpose and the historiographical background. Chapter one provides a brief biographical sketch of Lorenzo’s life followed by details of his afterlife. Chapter two examines his leading role in establishing the Capuchins’ new Commissariate of Bohemia-Austria-Styria in 1600, and specifically its first three friaries in Prague, Vienna, and Graz. Chapter three treats his preaching against heresy. Chapter four focuses on how Lorenzo, while in Prague, involved himself directly in theological disputations with two different Lutheran preachers. The first dispute, with Polykarp Leyser, took place in July 1607, and dealt with good works and justification. The second, with a Lutheran whose name is not known for certain, and which occurred in August 1610, concerned Catholic veneration of the Virgin Mary. Chapter five analyses the Lutheranismi hypotyposis, Lorenzo’s literary refutation of Lutheranism following additional contact with Polykarp Leyser in 1607. The conclusion considers briefly the effectiveness of Lorenzo’s apostolate and closes with a review of the thesis as a whole.

Madfors, Ingela January 2009 (has links)

/
This essay is a study of a dialogue between science and religion at the John Templeton foundation. The aim has been to investigate the value of this specific dialogue and also to get an understanding of the value of dialogues between science and religion in general regarding actuality and fruitfulness for the participants, the audience and the public debate. The study of the Templeton dialogue revealed shortcomings regarding definitions and guidelines, choice of participants and of topic. Furthermore, the argumentation was based on the individual participants belief or non-belief rather than their professional competence areas. The different contributions to the dialogue did not show any higher degree of fresh ideas, apart from two short essays describing new definitions of God. These thoughts were, however, not brought to the debates that were also a part of the dialogue. Despite the shortcomings, where many should have been possible to avoid, the studied dialogue showed willingness from people of different perspectives to meet and the dialogue also gained an interest from the general public. The conclusion of this study is that with clear definitions and guidelines and a well-considered choice of topic, the dialogue between science and religion should have a future.
