This dissertation aims to study the themes of memory, nationality and universality in two contemporary brazilian novels, O Sol se põe em São Paulo (2007), by Bernardo Carvalho, and Diário da queda (2011), by Michel Laub. These novels approach the memory of immigrants through the subjective narration of Brazilian descendants, what brings the discussion around transcultural narratives. The post-modernism is understood as a contradictory cultural tendency characterized by the presence of the past, made of the recovery of aesthetics and texts of literary tradition inside parodic narratives. The post-modern narrator enclosures the paradox of the necessity of narrative, even after the deterioration of experience in modernity. The remains of a formal or social realism contributes to the composition of narratives where conflicting tendencies defined in terms of affective realism and traumatic realism coexist, according to Schøllhammer (2012; 2013). Ambiance, themes and influences acknowledged in these two novels suggest a production oriented to a universalist approach, in contrast with the permanence of aspects of nationality, perceived through its material representation related to the brazilian underdevelopment. This particular context demands the conception of a post-modernism and a post-modernity that contemplates the peculiarities of Latin American societies, whose coexistence between backwardness and advancement may affect literary production as well as its legitimation inside a world literary system.

obrigados a retornar a Portugal.
linguagem, dentre outros. / The demystification of the past, the search of Portuguese postmodern identity and the
consequences of African decolonization for the ex-colons through the difficult process of
readjustment to Portugal in the Portuguese novel As Naus, by António Lobo Antunes. The
author recreates, through parody, the concept of being Portuguese. The author lived in
Angola during the revolutionary process of independence of the country transcribing to his
novel the horrors he witnessed. He shows not only the reality of Portuguese decolonization
in Africa, but also the outbreak of the colonial occupation and its consequences for the
Portuguese and their Angolan descendants, who are forced to return to Portugal. In the
narrative, many of these returnees have names of famous Portuguese and world figures. In
spite of carrying the identity of historical figures, these characters are very simple people.
Often marginalized, they cannot thrive in Portuguese society. Particularly through parody,
the author manages to combine two completely different moments of Portuguese history: the
fifteenth century, gloriously marked by maritime conquests, and the twentieth century, the
period of decolonization. The paradox of postmodern novels is revealed in the construction
of a fragmented narrative, in the presentification of the past and its consequent mixing of
temporal planes, in the multiplicity of voices and in experimentalism in language; among
others.

This research theme is the relationship between the so-called new technologies and the subjective constitution of contemporary- English teachers. We have the assumption that virtual networks work as strong control mechanisms that make teachers assume certain subject positions in the virtual environment and in the pedagogical-didactic discourse. In order to understand how English teachers constitute themselves as (post-)modern subjects through their relationship in and mediated by machines, we adopted a discourse-deconstructive perspective, which leads with the possibility of overlapping theories of discourse, Freudian psychoanalysis and Derrida and Foucault's deconstruction, dealing with concepts such as subject, identity, discourse and modes of subjectivity. This perspective is associated, in general, with the idea of a subject constituted by forms of subjectivity that are always multiple, heterogeneous, dispersed and fluid, a process which is always social and historically determined. The research was established, methodologically, by collecting fragments of discourse that formed the discussion forums in the English teachers communities, which belonged to two social networking sites, namely Orkut and the British Council. The analysis of these fragments took into consideration the subject and the meaning in constant production and displacement, and therefore the processes of meaning construction were considered from the relationship between language, society and history. We noticed a strong tendency of these teachers, by setting certain parameters of (pedagogical and professional) behavior and ways of being, to try to find a stable and solid imaginary identity that would enable them to place themselves as teachers of English in the contemporary era, under a logical of performance, preventing other forms of (self) knowing, thinking and relating to others and even to themselves / Doutorado / Doutor em Linguística Aplicada

Adolescent girls testifying in a criminal court in cases of sexual abuse or rape : a narrative analysisSaunders, Marilyn Cathleen 29 April 2008 (has links)
This research study explores the experiences of adolescent girls testifying in a criminal court in cases of sexual abuse and rape in South Africa. Private and public narratives, such as the participants’ experiences in court, the court support system and the court process, were reported using conversations, collages and written letters. These were interpreted from a narrative perspective, within a social constructionist paradigm. Social constructionism posits that all behaviour is understood within a social context and people create their reality and world through social interaction, which in this study is the legal system. Narratives are constructions of the experiences of the participants during the preparation and testifying process. Their stories reflect both positive and ambivalent experiences, such as fear and relief, joy and sadness. The most noteworthy findings of the research were the following: • Support from court personnel and NGOs is important for adolescents when they are testifying. • The friendly environment and activities of the NGO contrasts favourably with the cold and adult environment of the court in which the NGO is based. • The court preparation programme is essential to help adolescents cope when testifying in a criminal court through addressing fears such as seeing the accused in court, not understanding the proceedings, and having to address adults in court. • The National Prosecuting Authority seems to be taking child witnesses more seriously through collaboration with outside organisations. / Dissertation (MA (Counselling Psychology))--University of Pretoria, 2008. / Psychology / unrestricted

The crisis in church leadership and the Bible : addressing issues in the practical theology of church leadership through the exegesis of selected portions of the Epistle to TitusRaubenheimer, Jacques Eugene 23 November 2010 (has links)
The 21st century is marked by the widespread influence of post-modernism and the relativisation of truth. As such, confidence in the truth of Scripture is flagging, and nowhere is this felt more, ironically, than in the appointment and the working of pastors of the Word of God. Movements such as the historical Jesus research abroad, and the so-called “New Reformation” in South Africa, are calling into question long-held tenets of the Christian faith, as well as the inerrant nature of the Bible. The failing trust in the Scripture has also led to a diminished reliance on exposition of the Bible. This again relates to the training of pastors, as theological training today is marked by greater disdain for biblical subjects and a threatening rift between practical theology and biblical exposition. The aim of this study is to demonstrate how the trend might be countered, by applying an exposition of portions of the book of Titus relevant to the selection, appoint, and task of the pastor, to the current situation as it exists today. The exposition focused on the following excerpts from the epistle: 1:1–2:8, 3:12–15. The pastor was discussed as the exemplification of the Church elder, but it was also noted that all that applies to the pastor, equally applies to all elders of the Church. Emphasis was laid on the character of the pastor, the biblical requirements for the ministry, the appointment of pastors, the biblically mandated task of the pastor, the role of the pastor in defending and teaching sound doctrine, and how the teaching of the pastor is to filter down through the congregation, through the older men to the younger men, the older women to the younger women, and how a general ethos of relational ministry is to pervade the mindset of the whole Church (pastor and congregants) in all that they do. Through the exposition, it is seen that biblical exposition is still relevant, and has a role to play in all spheres of life and theology, including practical theological concerns such as the appointment and task of pastors. / Dissertation (MA(Theol))--University of Pretoria, 2010. / Practical Theology / unrestricted

Living the theory : an enquiry into the development of a psychotherapist in trainingNabal, Venessa 03 February 2010 (has links)
This dissertation explores the experiences of a psychotherapist in training. Psychotherapeutic training can be described as taxing, because personal change often results from the process, and change can be difficult. This study is an action research enquiry that focused on a living theory methodology. A living theory enquiry strives to find answers to the question of how to improve the practice (in this dissertation, the practice of sychotherapy). In order to find answers to this question, the researcher embarks on a journey of reflective awareness, which highlights whether he or she is able to practise in accordance with his or her personal values. An explicit awareness of both personal and professional values is essential in a living theory enquiry. A living contradiction occurs when a person is unable to consolidate his or her personal and professional values. A living contradiction has a negative impact on a practitioner’s well-being, which may in turn influence how that person practises psychotherapy. This dissertation explores such a living contradiction which the researcher experienced during her training as a psychotherapist. A subtext of the dissertation can be described as the Narrative of a psychotherapist (in training) dealing with personal trauma. Needle stick injury and the personal experience of health care workersKieser-Muller, Christel 30 January 2006 (has links)
This study describes the personal experience of heath care workers after a needle stick injury. The process of enquiry is embedded in a post modernistic ecosystemic perspective to elicit common themes in the health care workers’ (HCW) experiences of a Needle stick injury (NSI). Themes that emerged related mainly to the participants experience after having had a NSI. In the HCW environment HIV/AIDS is very well known disease. It is ironic that the HCW system at large is in denial regarding the dangers which the HCW’s face on a day to day basis working in a ‘mine field’ where every patient is a potential life threat to the HCW. From an ecosystemic stance one can clearly see the ecological principle at play. The HCW system seems to be stuck in a negative feedback process as the status quo is maintained by the defence/coping mechanisms. Adaptation seems to be limited. This inability to compensate leads to the disillusionment of the HCW who has to use ‘acceptable’ defence/coping mechanisms to deal with the trauma of being threatened by HIV/AIDS. The researcher found it constructive to use psychodynamic language, as defence mechanisms are psychodynamic concepts, to describe the process of the HCW system. As Keeney (1983) said that we are not surrounded, in a world of opposition, but rather in a realm of both/and dichotomies. The one cannot exit without, nor be discarded for, the other. Therefore, it could be suggested that an understanding of both systems and psychodynamic concepts may be a helpful tool in understanding and describing the processes of human interaction within an ecosystemic framework. / Dissertation (MA (Counselling Psychology))--University of Pretoria, 2007. / Psychology / unrestricted

Interpretations of the Politics of Fictive Landscapes in Context: A Comparison of Allan Sekula's Sketch on a Geography Lesson and Martha Rosler's In the Place of the Public Airport SeriesLeedy, Alison J. January 2012 (has links)
Interpretations of the Politics of Fictive Landscapes in Context: A Comparison of Allan Sekula's Sketch on a Geography Lesson and Martha Rosler's In the Place of the Public Airport Series Throughout this thesis project I examine the geopolitical context(s) of the photographs featured in Martha Rosler's 'In the Place of the Public Airport Series' (1983) and Allan Sekula's series, 'Sketch on a Geography Lesson' (1982). I investigate the manner in which they question the legitimacy of the genre of documentary photography within the post-modern age by emphasizing the documentation of an actual physical place, presenting an alternative to the post-modern notion of photograph merely as another component of simulacra, or the intentional creation of an image without meaning or origin. By looking at photographs that Rosler and Sekula made during the burgeoning stages of post-modern theory, presents a broader interpretation of the development of Marxist documentary photography from the early 1980's to today. One way in which I dialogue with the discourse surrounding documentary photography in the 1980's is to focus on Rosler's and Sekula's intentional choice of material that emphasizes the political dialogue rather than concepts that are abstract and maintain no reference to real life. Furthermore, the period of the 1980's is considered a point in contemporary art history when the political fervor of the 1960's and early 1970's diminished greatly. Departing from this trend, Rosler's and Sekula's work continues to address political ideas throughout the 1980's, creating a bridge to today's photographers, such as Edward Burtynsky and Andreas Gursky who consider aesthetics from a socio-political perspective. / Art History
