Analogical Matching Using Device-Centric and Environment-Centric Representations of FunctionMilette, Greg P 04 May 2006 (has links)
Design is hard and needs to be supported by software. One of the ways software can support designers is by providing analogical reasoning. To make analogical reasoning work well, the software makers need to know how to create a knowledge representation that will facilitate the kind of analogies that the designers want. This thesis will inform software makers by experimenting with two kinds of knowledge representations, called device-centric (DC) and environment-centric (EC), and to try to determine the relative benefits of using either one of them for analogical matching. We performed computational experiments, using Structure Mapping Engine for matching, to determine the quantity and quality of analogical matches that are produced when the representation is varied. We conducted a limited human experiment, using questionnaires and repertory grids, to determine if any of the computational results were novel, and to determine if the human similarity ratings between devices correlated with the computer results. We show that design software should use DC representations to produce a few focused matches which have high average weight. It should use EC representations to produce many matches some of high weight and some of low weight. Based on our human experiment, design software can use either DC or EC representations to produce novel matches. Our experiments also show that human matches correlate most strongly with a combined DC and EC representation and that their similarity reasons are more EC than DC. This suggests that designers tend to think more in EC terms than in DC terms.

Previous issue date: 2012-04-04 / This paper presents an analysis of the musical experiences developed by teenagers which find themselves at social and personal risk that are put under an institution’s care. The objective of this research was to investigate the relations between the teenagers and the classic, pop and mediatical emissions musical repertory, to reveal the contradictions inside the institution related to the functions granted to arts and music, also to verify in which measure the musical education techniques applied to this public can or not contribute to overcome this social reality. Were used as
theoretical methodological references the Dialectical and Historic Materialism (MARX, ENGELS, 1999, 2008; MARX, 2006, 2008; MÉSZÁROS, 2002; CHAUÍ, 2007; KOSIK, 2010), authors that contributed with the bases for the State theories
and that are related to the institution’s general aspects (GRUPPI, 1986; CARNOY, 1988; NETTO, 1992; PERONI, 2006; GRANEMANN, 2009; REZENDE, 2009; IAMAMOTO, 2010), and authors that write about the educational and aesthetics
conceptions from critic perspective VÁZQUEZ, 1978; CANCLINI, 1984; FISCHER, 1987; PEIXOTO, 2003).The gathering and analysis of the data happened through
the observation of the results achieved by the application of musical education techniques by the researcher, a music teacher, inside institution for a two years period. This paper assumes that musical education, and arts education in general, can and should contribute for a greater critical sense development among the attended population in order to lead to social transformation.

The urban issue has been object of study of Social Sciences for decades, being in a rich field of analysis before the multiplicity of actors, scenarios and conflicts motivated by iniquities. Considering cities as a place of opportunities, not everybody has access to the resources offered, especially the poorest populations. The impossibility of urban displacement reflects in the limitation of the city right of use, which limits the possibility of citizens development. In this context, social movements are fundamental to bring to the political agenda issues that are essential for reducing the inequalities so easily found in Brazilian metropolitan regions. Thus, Social Sciences also work to assimilate questions ranging from the understanding of their morphology to the effects generated by their actions. This study is based on the central concepts of Political Process Theory (TPP), the impacts made by the actions of an urban social movement, the Free Pass Movement (MPL), on the agenda of mobility and access to the city. As central axis is the procedure of the Proposed Amendment to Constitution (PEC) No. 90, 2011, authored by federal deputy Luiza Erundina. Thus, it is divided in three parts: i) the understanding of urban dynamics, its inequalities and the processes of exclusion; ii) observation of urban mobility policies and how segregation occurs by limiting access to transport; And iii) analysis of MPL's repertoire of actions in defense of access to transportation, the socioeconomic relationship and its impact on the PEC process.

This study intends to analyze the movement of the Deaf community along the process for the Libras Language institutionalization, from 1990 to 2002, from the perspective of the Political Process (TPP), with a special focus on the Repertory of Action with lobbying tactics. The core of the research lies in the dynamics between the actions of the Deaf movement and the processing of PLS 131/96, which was subsequently transformed into PL 4857/98, until its approval in April of 2002, and the use of the Repertory of Action, with lobbying tactics, as determinant for this achievement. When Libras was made official in 2002, it was the result of many years of struggle for the Brazilian Deaf community. This victory reflected the efforts of a group that for many years was marginalized, not being able to take part in the decisions concerning its distinctive interest, such as, education. This was initially done through a social network that was developed from sports associations and religious and educational institutions, and the group outlined the importance of getting politically organized and being protagonist in their struggles. The performance of FENEIS - National Federation of Education and Integration of the Deaf was essential to this process because it started the organization of most part of the collective actions that culminated in Bill No. 131/96, presented by Senator Benedita da Silva of PT-RJ, which was later transformed into Federal Ordinary Law 10,436 - Law of Libras (Brazilian signs language) .To get closer to the object and subjects of this study, a bibliographical and a documentary research was made on the history of the movement engendered by the Brazilian deaf community and institutions in various archives and documentation centers, as well as through media archives. At the end, this dissertation concludes that the lobby made by the Deaf movement among the political representatives, especially from the federal legislature, was determinant for making Libras the official language for the deaf people.
