Bäckström, Erika, Hällgren, Ida January 2015 (has links)

Extensive research on Bilingualism and Multilingualism has found evidence that different languages compete for activation in the bilinguals and multilinguals‟ mind (Dijkstra, Van Heuven, 2002; Dijkstra, 2003, Green, 1998.) The present study investigates crosslinguistic interaction in the oral productions of Portuguese by English-Spanish and Spanish-English bilinguals. For the study, twelve participants all learners of Portuguese as a third language were divided in two groups according to their first language (either English or Spanish). For the data collection, participants narrated the picture story Frog, where are you? by Mercer Mayer (1969). Participants also filled out the Language Experience And Proficiency Questionnaire (LEAP-Q) (Marian, Blumenfeld, and Kaushanskaya, 2007.) The instances of language interaction were coded as syntactic‟, morphological‟, and vocabulary‟. Statistics tests were run in order to determine which of the linguistic levels were highly present in the tokens and from which source language: English or Spanish. According to Hammarberg (2001), factors such as typology, second language (L2) status, proficiency, and language mode can predict the interactions among different languages in multilinguals. Based on the factors for interaction, two research questions were asked: 1) Which factors exert more influence in third language oral production: the typological distance or the L2 status?; 2) Which linguistic features in the target language (Portuguese) will be more influenced by the two previously acquired languages (English and Spanish): vocabulary, morphology or syntax? Based on these questions, two mutually exclusive hypotheses were formulated: 1) There will be more language interaction from Spanish than English due to the closest typological distance of Spanish in relation to Portuguese, if compared to English (Carvalho and Silva, 2006; Rothman, 2010;) 2) When English is the speakers‟ second language, it will generate more language interaction to Portuguese as L3 due to the foreign language status shared by the L2 and the L3 (Hammarberg, 2001.) The results show that the typology factor seems to play a more important role in the types of interaction found in the sample researched. When Spanish as L2 was a more recurrent source of language interaction, it coincided with its closest typological distance in relation to Portuguese. Vocabulary interaction occurred more frequently than syntactic or morphological interaction. English as L2 did not show significance in the interaction of items with Portuguese.

Sun, Yuqi 14 January 2015 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2015-04-14T13:39:26Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 464982.pdf: 8274967 bytes, checksum: 7fe1c43afe5b997bbbfdd868b57b44ee (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-01-14 / This dissertation deals with the use of hedging strategies, which are considered a linguistic act to intensify or reduce the illocutionary force of scientific statements in academic writing, from the perspective of Third Language Acquisition (TLA). The study aims to analyze what the main factors are that influence these strategies in Chinese bachelor degree theses. Based on the hypothesis that multilinguals have a different pragmatic competence from bilinguals, which may influence the use of hedging strategies in academic writing, this study has been developed in three stages. In the first stage, the theoretical framework is discussed, focusing on TLA and hedging concepts and classifications in academic research articles. In the second stage, we present how the corpus was compiled and tagged, which consists of 60 texts in Chinese (L1), English (L2) and Portuguese (L3), written by Chinese bilingual and multilingual students with different English proficiencies. The third stage is to establish and analyze the associations of text moves, L2 status, speaker types and writing languages to the different hedging categories and effects, based on the data mining. The result shows that Chinese bilinguals apply hedging strategies with more frequency than multilinguals. Moreover, the texts written in English present more use of hedging with the effect of attenuation than in the other two languages. The study also shows that both text moves and second language proficiency may influence hedging strategies. However, each of them presents a different cross-linguistic influence for a given hedging category.

Three are the chapters, that they will guide this work: the chapter 1 presents as element key for characterization of the epic one in Great hinterland: trails, the mining hinterland replete of trails, palco of exuberant vegetation, huge and multidimensional scene, where it has an entrecruzamento of fiction and reality. It retakes quarrel of critics as Manuel Cavalcanti Proen?a, Roberto Schwarz, on the existing epic character in the Great hinterland: trails, constructed from deriving myths of the universal culture, that they had been become popular. The brave and gracious knight, that it has its representabilidade in the popular culture. Thus the medieval hero, the knight represented for the Riobaldo personage, it is cognominado by Proen?a as Don Riobaldo of the Urucuia, knight of the general fields. O chapter 2 is a study on the popular culture in Rosa and Cascudo. Cascudo the example of Rosa also is ex?mio studious of the brazilian life, the regionalization and the popular manifestations proceeding from other cultures. O chapter 3 it has as focus of analysis two mitopo?ticas personages: Diadorim e Luzia-Homem, which in the cited narratives they generally they assume functions generally atribute the men. Since children, if they dresses male. Valley to point out that Diadorim is not characterized as man, since in Great hinterland:trails if trajaq always as gunman. Luzia, when complete 18 anos pass if to dress as woman, but the stigma of male and female, inherited of the time where it coexisted the father folloies it for all the life. They suffer pain to have been born to fight and to n?o conhecer to love. They die you deliver the God. This study detects exactly that Diadorim and Luzia-Homem, are personages associates the myths of the universal culture and popular (sphinx, Jellyfish, Venus, Mother d water), that they possess similarities n the archetypes, that transit between the sexos masculine and feminine, without any sexual connotation, possesss it proper code of honr, of this not abdicating ahead of the death. Parallel, in this chapter two cascudianas workmanships willbe studies, that contemplate thematic of the dressed woman of man and being the woman without disguice: the enchantment tale Maria Gomes and romance Flower of tragics romances. The first one will be revisited in order to present subject in Great hinterland:trails through the Diadorim personage. As it will discourse on cases of brave women, cited for Cascudo, immortalized for the tradition, who had made history, that already is not disfar?am of men to carry through acts of bravery and honor.

Andersson, Therese January 2012 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to examine how companies can preform practical optimization of their marketing efforts in social media. Marketing in social media is something that many business leaders prioritize as it promotes a two-way communication, which in turn can lead to the possibility to reach out to more customers and provide successful profit effects. The report examines selected best-practices to find those recommendations that can be viewed as best suited for pracital optimization of a company’s website and profile-pages in social media. In order to define the recommendations, the study reviewed which recommendations were applied to real companies and what need and what knowledge small businesses have in the area. This was examined by analyzing five businesses and their activity in social media, which was followed up by an digital survey targeting small businesses. The result include a summary of appropriate recommendations to smaller companies that want to practically optimize their marketing efforts in social media.

Distributed Support Vector Machine Learning

Armond, Kenneth C., Jr. 07 August 2008 (has links)
Support Vector Machines (SVMs) are used for a growing number of applications. A fundamental constraint on SVM learning is the management of the training set. This is because the order of computations goes as the square of the size of the training set. Typically, training sets of 1000 (500 positives and 500 negatives, for example) can be managed on a PC without hard-drive thrashing. Training sets of 10,000 however, simply cannot be managed with PC-based resources. For this reason most SVM implementations must contend with some kind of chunking process to train parts of the data at a time (10 chunks of 1000, for example, to learn the 10,000). Sequential and multi-threaded chunking methods provide a way to run the SVM on large datasets while retaining accuracy. The multi-threaded distributed SVM described in this thesis is implemented using Java RMI, and has been developed to run on a network of multi-core/multi-processor computers.
