Exploratory Study on the Drivers and Barriers to Adoption of an Integrated Library System in Kyambogo University Library Service

Buwule, Robert Stalone January 2014 (has links)
The adoption of Integrated Library Systems (ILS) helps library staff to automate libraries’ routine operations. While some libraries are coping well with automation, others most especially in Sub Saharan Africa face challenges and setbacks. The purpose of the study is to explore the adoption of an open source ILS, Koha, at Kyambogo University Library Service (KyULS). The study employs a qualitative approach where data is gathered using semi-structured interviews. Collected data was analysed using content analysis. The results of the study indicate that the drivers for adopting an ILS in KyULS are: qualified staff members, Koha being an open source software, training, and library automation trends in sister university libraries. The barriers to ILS adoption on the other hand included: lack of infrastructure, internet instability, insufficient funding, bureaucracy and the ILS’s unsuitability to persons with visual impairment. This report further provides recommendations to alleviate or resolve the difficulties that are hampering KyULS specifically and potentially other libraries when adopting ILSs. They include having a well-planned process of adopting the ILS, provision of a centralised and stable campus-wide inter/intranet network, establishment of required ILS infrastructure, sourcing of external funding, carrying out wide spread sensitisation of the ILS, continuously training the library staff members in the use of the ILS and collaboration with ILS adoption champions in other academic libraries. This study may be of value to academic librarians, LIS schools and ILS vendors globally as it helps them better understand the unique challenges faced by libraries in Sub-Saharan Africa. / Dissertation (MIT)--University of Pretoria, 2014. / Information Science / MIT / Unrestricted

Způsoby vzniku a reprodukce historického vědomí na příkladu spolku Radecký Praha / The creation and reproduction of historical consciousness on the example of the association Radecký Praha

Petrnoušková, Anna January 2016 (has links)
The master thesis "The creation and reproduction of historical consciousness on the example of the association Radecký Praha" deals with the historical consciousness, its creation and reproduction. The theoretical part defines not only historical consciousness but also pays attention to the related issues, such as collective memory, historical memory, sites of memory, or national identity, due to the fact that the boundaries between collective memory and historical consciousness are often at least unclear. Theoretical part is primarily based on the works of Maurice Halbwachs, Jan Assmann, Miroslav Hroch and Pierre Nora. The empirical part of this study concludes the research of the association Radetzky Prague, which seeks to return the monument of Marshal Radetzky on the Malostranské náměstí. The research tries to describe and understand the ways of creation and reproduction of historical consciousness of its members throughout the analysis of qualitative interviews. Mentioned authors already provide a certain methodological background research. Conclusion contains a summary and a comparison of research results with theses of authors that are dealing with similar themes. This work is not a purely historical or sociological one; it is trying to stay somewhere between historical and sociological...

Samoživitelství z pohledu mužů samoživitelů / Single parent from the perspective of single fathers

Rábová, Veronika January 2019 (has links)
This thesis focuses on the topic of single-parent family, because this type of family, which are led only by one parent, is very relevant to our present social situation. In the context of current demographic trends related to the transformation of society in the perception of family and partner relationships, it can be assumed that their number will be continue to grow. Specifically this thesis is focused on single fathers, although many studies speaks of a certain percentage of single fathers in the Czech Republic, research on this topic has been carried out only a few times so far. For the most part, a woman is at the forefront of "incomplete" families. Single-parent family is perceived as a highly gendered experience, which is primarily related to women. The aim of this work was to find out what the experience of single parent looks like in the case of single fathers. This premise of this thesis is to explore what reasons have the fathers to choose to be single parents, what this type of commitment means for men, how they sign on their everyday life and especially how this type of primary care relates to the concept of hegemonic masculinity. Gender perspective thus provides a comprehensive insight into single-parent family and presents the perspective of the fathers themselves. For this purpose...

Čechová, Simona January 2020 (has links)
The teaching of regional geography in Montessori schools Abstract The goal of this thesis is to present the importance and position of the curriculum of regional geography and to analyze the approaches to teaching methods of regional geography, which are used in Montessori schools in the Czech Republic and are applicable in teaching geography in other types of schools. Specifically, we study pupils in the higher grades of primary schools and the lower grades of a grammar school. The work deals with this topic in two main parts. The first theoretical part is devoted to familiarization with the history of regional geography as a scientific discipline and, subsequently, with the functions and subject of study of regional geography in general. The next section deals with the curriculum and teaching of regional geography. At the end of the theoretical part, there are chapters devoted to Montessori education and methodology utilized in this thesis. The second part summerizes results of qualitative research, including the method of semi-structured interviews with teachers of regional geography and participatory observations in classes. Hinder och möjligheter med problemlösning för andraspråkselever : En kvalitativ studie om hur lärare beskriver att de arbetar med problemlösning för andraspråkselever / Obstacles and opportunities with problem solving for second language students

Sarendal, Roza, Haglund, Lisa January 2021 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to deepen the knowledge of how teachers work with problem solving for second language students. The sample in this study are four teachers who, through semi-structured qualitative interviews, share their thoughts, opinions and experiences on the topic. The results show that teachers have a clear picture of the adjustments that should be made for second language students to reach the knowledge requirements in mathematics. These adaptations are made through different strategies and working methods, such as the five fingers-method and letting the students present their different solutions to each other. Teachers find it beneficial to let students work together and be each other's support. The work with word and concept comprehension is an important part of the students' knowledge and language development. This work is facilitated and clarified with the help of image support and laboratory materials. The study concludes that language is seen as the biggest difficulty in problem solving. Teachers use different working methods and approaches to help second language students develop both linguistically and mathematically. Peer support and interpreters are seen as useful means to help students who have insufficient language skills. However, the responsibility should not lie with the student when it comes to different translation situations, as it is not compatible with the Convention on the Rights of the Child. At the same time, teachers feel that interpreters tend to translate too much, due to a lack of pedagogical training.

Att spela tillsammans med andra : En kvalitativ intervjustudie kring gemensamhetsskapande aktiviteter i pianoundervisning / To play with others : A qualitative interview study on community-building activities in piano teaching

Edman, Mariana January 2021 (has links)
The purpose of the present study is to investigate how cultural school teachers view community-creating activities in their piano teaching and how these affect students' cohesion and learning. The background chapter presents literature that deals with the positive effects of using community-building activities. There is a lack of literature that deals with opposite effects. The theoretical starting point of the study consists of the socio-cultural perspective with its focus on appropriation, mediation, situated activities, the proximal development zone and scaffolding. A qualitative research approach is used with a focus on how teachers interpret, understand and construct community-creating activities. Semi-structured interviews are used as the data collection method and thematic analysis is used as the analysis method. The results show that the use of community-creating activities in piano teaching has both advantages and difficulties. Some of the benefits of community-building activities are that students learn to listen to each other, develop rhythm and pulse as well as a sense of tempo and try different musical roles, learn to dare to play in front of others. Some disadvantages of community-building activities are that they are time-consuming, difficult to organize and difficult to find good sheet music material for. The community-creating ways of working that are used include playing with the teacher in a single lesson, four-handed/multi-handed piano playing/group playing and games in group. The discussion deals with how the advantages and disadvantages of community-creating activities affect students' social cohesion and musical learning. For example, chamber music can contribute positively as students learn different roles in ensemble and create a specific mood in it. At the same time, the same activity can contribute to negative consequences if the piano student gets too difficult parts to play or if members of the chamber music ensemble do not see each other outside the classroom.

Driving Changes Through Podcasting : an Analysis on the Use of Podcasting by French Activists

Le Meur, Tanguy January 2022 (has links)
Through discontinuous growth and its use in multiple sectors the podcasting established itself as a medium to be reckoned with in the future. Recently, the mainstream scene of French podcasting has seen, among its usual professionally produced shows, the presence of a few podcasts involving a clear and subjective message of activism. These manifestations, although a minority in the head of the charts, are only the visible part of a phenomenon made possible by the “long-tail” dimension of this medium. Indeed, although overwhelmed by the multitude of shows forming this tail, various activist circles have been able to take advantage of the myriad of useful qualities that this medium affords by creating their own programs. With the aim of grasping the interest shown by French activists in podcasting, this thesis was supported by the interviews of two French citizens working for progress through podcasting. The findings of these discussions were backed by active listening to the episodes produced and hosted by these participants and by three auto-ethnographic vignettes tracing the various stages of the creation of a podcasting show by the author of this work. The analysis of these results has been treated under the lenses of adequate theories to demonstrate that activists have a practical relationship with podcasting allowing them to reach their community active offline through participatory and independent episodes

Att stödja syskon till barn med långvarig sjukdom : Barnsjuksköterskors erfarenheter / To support siblings of children with long-term illness : Pediatric nurses' experiences

Backman, Linda-Marie, Johansson, Ida January 2022 (has links)
Totalt deltog sex sjuksköterskor i studien. / Background The whole family is involved when a child suffers from a long-term illness. Siblings also have a need to be listened to and feel seen and it is important that siblings feel involved in the care.  Aim The purpose of this study was to describe pediatric nurses' experiences of supporting siblings of children with long-term illness in pediatric inpatient care. Method The design of the study was qualitative where data were collected from individual interviews based on a semi-structured interview guide. The participants were pediatric nurses and undergraduate nurses who worked in pediatric inpatient care. A total of six nurses participated in the study. The interviews were analyzed with qualitative content analysis with an inductive approach.  Results The result showed that pediatric nurses’ gave the siblings attention through small actions, like greeting the siblings and learning their names. They support the siblings by taking time to play, listen and gave them personalized information. The pediatric nurses’ described that the most important thing was that siblings were offered to be physically present in the ward, but that they should be involved in the care to the extent they want. They also described the importance of family-centered care and the professional team. Conclusion Pediatric nurses have an important role in supporting siblings of children with long-term illness, so they don’t feel forgotten.

Algoritmizace sociálních sítí a její percepce očima mládeže / Algorithmization of social networking sites and its perception by adolescents

Hegedüš, Tomáš January 2021 (has links)
The diploma thesis Algorithmization of social networks and its perception by adolescents deals with the issue of algorithms which lead to personalization of social networks. Their perception by children and adolescents is currently not sufficiently explored. In the theoretical part, I demonstrate how the current studies examine the perception of algorithms on a sample of the entire population, in the context of adolescents how they focus on social networks as a whole. Therefore, the ambition of this thesis is to research the intersection of these three spheres and its impact on adolescent's perception of algorithmisation of social networks. Through qualitative research using the method of semi-structured interviews, this thesis outlines trends that may prevail in this area. An analytical synthesis of knowledge also answers the questions of how adolescents are informed about the possibilities of influencing the selection and sorting of the content and whether they show interest in these possibilities. In the theoretical part, I introduce readers of this work to the issue of new media, how social media developed, including their convergence. Among the researched social networks are Facebook, Instagram and YouTube. To understand the comparison of reality and the statements of the respondents, in the...
