I skuggan av mediernas renommé : En kvalitativ textanalys av krigsfotografier premierade i World Press Photo of the Year

Stenström, Philip, Jansson, Hampus January 2016 (has links)
The aim of our study was to examine war pictures rewarded by the prominent foundation World Press Photo. Direct and indirect the foundation displays pictures to Western audience, pictures that are considered prestigious and current by the foundation itself. The image of World Press Photo and the editorial staff behind the organization therefore reflect how the West perceives current events in the world. Hereby, knowingly and unknowingly the foundation contributes to construct and reproduce everlasting pictures of important events. By examining how pictures are constructed and to ascertain what resemblances and differences that pictures of the Vietnam War as well as modern wars and conflicts contain, we consequently investigated eight war pictures awarded by the foundation World Press Photo. Our findings indicate that these war pictures offer emotional aspects like compassion and suffering. In addition, several photos provide notion of a postcolonial perspective of us and them. Our results also display that the awarded war pictures.

On the run the the land of border controls : A study of Dagens Nyheter and Sydsvenskan’s portrayal of refugees

Alm, Agnethe, Ronnebäck, Tove January 2017 (has links)
In the autumn of 2015 a huge amount of refugees were on the run to Sweden. The news media described the situation as a refugee crisis and border controls were initiated. The aim of this study was to examine how two Swedish newspapers, one national and one local, portrayed refugees at the time when the border controls were initiated in Sweden. The questions examined were: How are the refugees portrayed, what are the similarities and differences between Dagens Nyheter and Sydsvenskan’s portrayal of the refugees? To approach this we made two different analysis of reports from each newspaper, three from Dagens Nyheter and two from Sydsvenskan. We did a framing analysis on the text and a semiotic analysis on the pictures. Findings show that the portrayal of refugees are very similar in both newspapers. The refugees are described as inferior, but at the same time brave, well-educated and hopeful. We also found that refugees often are portrayed as “the others” and the citizens of Sweden are portrayed as “we”. Although the similarities outweighs, we found some interesting differences in the newspapers portrayal of the refugees. For example, in Dagens Nyheter the hopefulness is combined with a positive and joyful approach, while Sydsvenskan describes the hope with an uncertainty and concern about the future.

Mediální obraz společnosti Apple v českých internetových médiích za života Steva Jobse a po jeho smrti / Media image of the Apple Inc in Czech internet media before and after Steve Jobs'death

Nováková, Věra January 2016 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with media image of Apple Inc. in selected Czech internet media. It presents Apple Inc., its evolution and Steve Jobs's personality. The theoretic framework is semiotics and main method is semiotic analysis. There is also an introduction to the selected Czech internet media - iDnes.cz and jablickar cz. These are the sources of articles that have undergone semiotic analysis and are followed by comparation. The results of analysis is a phenomenon showing that the level of positivity of Apple products presentation in selected articles is lower after Jobs's death compared to the level of positivity of Apple products presentation during Jobs's life. Srovnávací sémiotická analýza vybraných protektorátních a raně socialistických agitačních plakátů vyskytujících se na území někdejšího Československa / Comparative semotic analysis of selected propagandistic poster from Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia and early socialist era in former Czechoslovakia

Baláková, Zuzana January 2017 (has links)
The diploma thesis focuses on the analysis of the selected protectorate and socialist propaganda posters from the forties and early fifties of the 20th century. The analyzed period ends with year 1953. This particular piece of work strives to set the whole subject in a larger theoretical framework. Furthermore the characteristic features of the given ideologies, the theory of semiotics and a brief description of the given historical period is also encompassed. Within the theory of semiotics the main inspiration is drawn from the works of Ferdinand de Saussure, Charles Sanders Peirce and Charles Morris. The most crucial source for the semiotic analysis is the book Mythology from Roland Barthes, especially its second theoretical part of Myth today, from which the methodological approach was gathered. The semiotic analysis allows one to uncover and expose the hidden meanings of texts. Ten posters were chosen in total for the analysis, five from the protectorate era and five from the late forties and early fifties. This was carried out in order to juxtapose pairs of images which portray the same motif or theme. The aim of this thesis is to analyze the applied semiotic components of the individual posters and then to compare the respective motifs and elements within the two ideologies and the extent to...

[en] COMMEST - A COMMUNICABILITY EVALUATION SUPPORT TOOL / [pt] COMMEST - UMA FERRAMENTA DE APOIO AO MÉTODO DE AVALIAÇÃO DE COMUNICABILIDADE

LUCIANA CARDOSO DE CASTRO SALGADO 12 November 2008 (has links)
[en] With increasing competition among software producers and free distribution of software over the Internet, there is a growing concern with developing highquality software, which can actually improve people's lives and allow for pleasant and productive use experience. To this end, one of the industry's needs is the availability of methods and techniques for evaluating use experience. Some computer tools have been developed to support the application of existing evaluation methods. Among them, some are commercial, others have been developed in universities, in non-governmental organizations, and some have even been developed by government agencies. The focus of this work is on the communicability evaluation method, an epistemic tool proposed by Semiotic Engineering, a semiotic theory of human-computer interaction. The method consists of a systematic procedure for evaluating the users' experience as they interact with systems, emphasizing the communicative aspects of the process. Although it is taught in a considerable number of graduate and undergraduate schools of Informatics in Brazil, the method is not sufficiently utilized to either generate new knowledge for human-computer interaction research, or consolidate itself as a tool for extensive professional practice. This is the consequence of difficulties in learning and teaching the method (Bim et al., 2007). Therefore, this work presents a computer tool to support the application of the communicability evaluation method, specifically designed to facilitate the teaching and learning of the method.

Análise do discurso musical: uma abordagem semiótica / Analysis of the musical discourse: a semiotical approach

Monteiro, Ricardo Nogueira de Castro 21 November 1997 (has links)
The dissertation named\' Analysis of the musical discourse: a semiotical approach\' discusses the application on musical analysis of the model championed by lithuanian linguist Algirdas Julien Greimas which conceives the process of generation of meaning as a path from abstract oppositions to narrative structures and hence to the discourse itself, which is called meaning generation path. The first chapter brings a general exposition which situates its analytical proposal in terms of the historical development of both musicology and the french branch of semiotical studies, which is committed with Structuralism. On chapter II, a detailed application of the theoretical model is presented step by step with the help of commented examples regarding some of the most appealing compositions of western repertory such as Beethoven\'s 5th. Symphony, Tschaikovsky\'s 4th Symphony and the first fugue of Bach\'s Well-tempered keyboard. The conclusion suggests that a semiotical approach on music should start with considering the superficial aspects of musical discourse so that its tensive and phorical course can be inferred and conceived as a complex of modulations where its internal relationships of attraction and repulsion may be ordinated in terms of valence. Based on the hypothesis of the existence of an instance of discreteness which converts the valences of the fundamental level into values of the narrative level and modulations into modalities, the study of narrative brings forth two main contributions. First, a semantical approach which explains the relationship between theme and musical form and revolutionizes the concept of musical variation. Second, a semiotical research on passion in music.

Sequências e séries: uma proposta duvaliana para a educação básica / Sequences and series: a Duvalian proposal for primary school

Quina, Caio Moura 09 December 2015 (has links)
The subject of this research is about teaching and learning sequences and series in primary education. The research question is to understand how favorable is the use of the theory of semiotic representation registers to create activities that help students to learn. Were created ten activities about sequences and series and four of these were chosen to be used in a classroom with 1st year students of a secondary school. By observing these activities being used in classroom, evidences were searched to evaluate if including different semiotic representation registers facilitates student\'s learning on mathematics. As a secondary aim, the student\'s infinity conception is investigated in the classroom. We also researched mathematics\' history to find different conceptions adopted by philosophers and mathematicians on infinity. As sequences and series are also studied in college, some transition difficulties (from High School to College) were discussed considering cultural differences between the two educational levels. It was concluded that concrete teaching materials to the students\' comprehension and the students\' concept of infinity is mainly linked to potential infinity.

Discurso da divulgação religiosa: semiótica e retórica / Dissemination of religious discourse: semiotic and rhetoric

Silva, Sueli Maria Ramos da 09 March 2012 (has links)
Our aim in this thesis is to show our point of view that seeks to expand the developments presented here, by proposing a revival of rhetoric and association, associating these ideas to the tensive point of view of semiotics. Our work is supported by the development of the Semiotic sense of style with the operationalization of the notion of ethos proposed by Discini (2004b). In this direction we seek to add the notion of ethos as style, tone, voice, character and corporeality which can be understood as a totality of discourses (Discini, 2004b), to the tensive point of view proposed by Zilberberg (2006a) in reference to the notions of upward and downward motions style set forth by the author. We propose, therefore, to delineate more fully the manner of presence of the enunciation set out to disseminate religious speech and therefore of their own religious discourse. From the observation of recurrences of the mechanisms of construction of meaning on the statements gathered by this thesis, we seek to distinguish between the three levels of practices with regard to religious discourse: a) founding discourse b) discourse of religious loyalty, c) and dissemination of religious discourse. We propose to outline a typology of dissemination of religious discourses, relating it to the different ways in which the paradigm of belief is processed according to Zilberberg (2006a). Wed like to highlight the innovative character of the proposed typology, as it has in principle to carry out the enunciatee pursued by such discourses. We proceed thus to the establishment of five different enunciative scenes: a) religious promotion specialist b) instructional religious promotion c) speech aiming at social conversion d) religious promotion aiming to advertize e) religious promotion media. Our work tries to contribute to the contemporary perspectives of return toward the Rhetoric study based on foundation speeches, religious loyalty and promotion by examining one\'s own sphere of circulation of the religious sense, that is, with reflections on the religious discourse , as stated, enunciation, ethos, style and appearance.

Resolução de problemas e representações semióticas: uma experiência no ensino médio inspirada no rali matemático / Problem solving and semiotic representations: an experience at the secondary school based on mathematical rally

Prado, Marilia 01 July 2015 (has links)
The topic of this research is Problem Solving in teaching and learning Mathematics in primary education. It fits into the project Ensino de Matemática na Escola Elementar within the program Observatório da Educação (OBEDUC/CAPES), developed by IME-USP. The goal of this study is to investigate the way in which problem solving practices can be implemented in classroom and what are students experiences with them. For the purpose of this study, we propose to develop, realize and analyze a problem solving experience with 1st year students of a state-run secondary school in Sao Paulo/SP, based on international competition Mathematical Rally. In general, when solving a mathematical problem, ideas have to be organized from a representation of mathematical relations and objects. With this in mind, and understanding that different types of mathematical representations are useful tools in problem solving activities, this study investigates the role of different semiotic representations in students problem-solving processes. Therefore, the methodology used was involved a 3-phase experimental intervention study with qualitative data analysis based on research in this area, as well as on Raymond Duvals theory of semiotic representation registers. Even though the right answers were not found, the research points that most of groups tried to represent similarly of previous stage, or at least more organized ways to deal with data and expose their ideas. It can be concluded that the choice of \"Math Rally\" as context was validated as it facilitated the use of activities based on problem solving. The students actively participated of the solving process and understood the role of semiotic representations on similar kind of situations.
