Inte bara invandrare? : Diskursiva villkor för våldsutsatta tjejer i etniska minoritetsgrupper

Iversen, Clara January 2008 (has links)
A mapping process is ongoing in Sweden concerning a phenomenon known as ”honour related violence”. The explanations of “honour related violence” often focus on culture and ethnicity, thus establishing differences between the majority society and offenders and victims. Given that some scholars critique mapping for focusing on predetermined objects, my aim is to study discursive conditions for abused girls, who are constructed as being from within ethnic minorities, in relation to their contact with the Swedish welfare system. The data consists of documents from the Swedish police authority and social services; as well as interviews with abused girls who have been in contact with the Swedish welfare system. I found that public authorities distance themselves from accusations of racism and partiality by using an individualistic repertoire where not only and not all “immigrants” are said to be involved in the problem. Despite this, causes of the problem are only discussed in terms of culture-clashes and lack of integration. Subjectivity is attributed to both offender and victim and the victim is constructed as someone without ability to speak for herself. The girls talk of victimhood as lack of agency but they also give accounts of themselves through emphasis on their subjective experiences. Thereby they question the public authorities’ ability to understand their situation. Through subjectivity it is possible for the girls to both talk as victims and claim a voice of their own.

Hansson, Maria January 2011 (has links)
In this essay the aim is to examine what an analysis of records of the Swedish phenomenon called the “mara” or nightmare can tell us about gender relations in the nineteenth century Swedish peasant society. From Snorre Sturlasson to studies done in the present day I go through records and the people who has written them for answers to my questions. I use the methods sex/gender and Michel Foucault’s perspective of power and my main material I study is records from DAG.With this essay I take you through methods, and descriptions of the “mara”. I also take a closer look on the people who has written down what the people thought and their believes about the “mara” during the nineteenth century. I also take a closer look on the books that has been followed by the recorders.

Tunmats, Linus January 2022 (has links)
School is supposed to be a place of equal opportunity for all students to achieve academic success no matter who they are or what background they have. Yet in the Swedish school today, girls generally perform better and receive better grades than boys regardless of socioeconomic background or ethnicity. This trend is not exclusive to Sweden; multiple countries experience this as well as reported by OECD (2020). The purpose of this project is to study why girls outperform boys in the Swedish school. This project applies the hypothesis that girls are, consciously or unconsciously, more encouraged and have higher expectations placed upon them by their teachers, guardians and their classmates. To study this a survey was handed out to 75 students of both sexes where they answered questions about their academic achievements as well as about their general, inner and outer motivation, encouragement and expectations from their teachers, guardians and classmates. The results show that the students have the same general motivation and experience almost equal encouragement from teachers and guardians. Girls, however, have slightly higher inner motivation, much higher outer motivation and experience much more encouragement from their classmates as well as higher expectations from their teachers, guardians and their classmates than boys do. These results are then analyzed and compared to what previous research found and eventual differences are discussed.

Börjesson, Lisa January 2018 (has links)
The aim of this essay is to examine how the discourse of the glass ceiling has changed in twenty years. This with an approach of gender studies highlight which performances and power structures between women and men this change is based on. My questions follow my aim. My delimitations are sex/gender, the unequal gender distribution in Swedish industry and a twenty-year period. This is based on my material that are two State public reports from 1997 and 2014 that have treated the glass ceiling. The theory and method are a critical discourse analysis, whereof the theory is Faircloughs three-dimensional model. The conclusion can be drawn from the results and it shows that the discourse of the glass ceiling has changed, from a focus on position segregation to change. The performances and power structures between women and men that this change is based on are separating the sexes and male superiority.

Understanding Sex/Gender in Cardiovascular Disease

Kreatsoulas, Catherine 10 1900 (has links)

There has been much controversy in the cardiovascular literature regarding sex/gender differences in the presentation of coronary artery disease and downstream implications. The aim of this thesis is not to resolve this controversy, but rather to assess and critique potential sex/gender similarities and differences from a variety of perspectives, explored through various methodologies.

This thesis contains four main studies, each employing different quantitative and qualitative methods. An overarching framework was developed to contextualise each study presented in this thesis. The first main study entitled, the “RACE CAR” trial assessed physician opinion prospectively observing that women are perceived to benefit less from cardiac catheterization compared to men, while controlling for age, TIMI risk and preference for cardiac catheterization. The “Identifying women with severe angiographic coronary disease” study observed physician referral patterns retrospectively and determined that although women are less likely to have severe angiographic disease compared to men, the traditional risk factors and CCS Class IV angina are significant predictors of severe angiographic disease. This is an important finding to help physicians better identify women at risk.

The findings from these two studies identified the need for the cardiovascular research community to better define angina, particularly among women. Using qualitative methodology, a new theory of angina emerged, illustrating symptoms along a gender continuum. Based on the findings from the qualitative study, the final study of this thesis developed an assessment tool to test the symptom parameters along the gender continuum. The findings confirm that the symptoms of women and men represent more shared experiences rather than differences, particularly among patients with obstructive coronary artery disease.

These studies collectively address knowledge gaps and add new information to various stages of patient cardiac care within the sex/gender programme of cardiovascular research.
/ Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Åström, Jennie January 2008 (has links)
This study focuses on single peoples construction of their lifes in relation to normative heterosexual coupledom. It is based on five interviews made with single women and men at the age of 24 to 51 who live by themselves. The queer theory which puts the heteronormativity in question is used as a theoretical framework. Discourse psychology functions as an analytic approach. It focuses on the use of language in the construction of reality in a world of determinant discourses. The thesis shows how the life of singles is made understandable where the interviewee´s constructs their reality by either creating their own life's as possible ways of living and distance themselves from coupledom or by striving for the twosome way of living. This is done by a construction of gender and age performance as different in the single and the twosome life. It also shows paradoxes where discourses of advantage independence meet discourses that construct twosome relationships as the only place for the development of real masculinity or of a special form of preferable femininity. The construction of gender and age as performed different in the single and the couple life provides an understanding of the interviewee's creation of self-image in relation to normative heterosexual coupledom.
