Sexuality in mental health: brasilian science production review (2001-2014).

José Roberto Silva Boaes 26 May 2015 (has links)
Aiming at analyzing mental health and sexuality studies, specifically in papers published in Brazil between 2001 and 2014, this dissertation brings a review of the literature carried out in two databases: Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde and Portal de Periódicos CAPES. It can be noticed that studies on sex, gender and sexuality show the complexity of the understanding of human sexual life going from essentialist to constructivist perspectives, conceiving sexuality in several manners. However, studies on madness, mental health and psychosocial care point to different conceptions of mental sickening process, mental health being at the same time a science field and a psychological well-being value to be achieved. Surveys in nursery homes show that institution agents represent the sexuality of a mentally suffering person (MSP) as abnormal or non-existing. The review of academic production on the subject, after the implementation of Act 10.126/2001, which encompasses exactly the rights of people with mental disorders, has put together 685 publications (549 in CAPES and 136 in BVS), 43 of them in both, with only 109 from Brazil, these ones having been systematized by title and abstract, only eleven were selected and studied thoroughly. Results show that the analyzed science production is scarce, being the theme just at its beginning in collective health, with the predominance of biomedical approaches focusing in on sexual behavior, with special attention to the vulnerability to IST/HIV/AIDS, as well as to the concentration of studies in the southeast region of the country, the absence of sexual education and gaps in the training to work with sexuality. The conclusion is that the studied Brazilian science production on sexuality in the field of mental health is not centered on sexual and reproductive rights of MSP, while user sexual practices and the representations of professionals come to the fore in the analyses.

Delayed disclosure of sexual violence incidents among victims in Newcastle, Kwazulu-Natal

Adefolalu Adegoke Olusegun January 2010 (has links)

The aim of this study was to identify factors associated with reporting incidents of sexual violence after seventy-two hours at the sexual assault service centre in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal. This descriptive study was based on retrospective analysis of 534 medical records of victims of sexual violence at the Newcastle hospital between 2005 and 2009. A data collection sheet was designed to extract information from three sources namely: the victims‟ hospital files, J88 forms and specific hospital forms that were completed for sexual assault victims. The collected data were entered into and processed for analysis using EPI INFO statistical package. Frequencies, means and standard deviations were calculated for the data set. Test of significance was also done using the Chi-square test and presented using odds ratios with 95% CI and p-value of &lt / 0.05. The victims‟ age range was 2-81years (mean= 18.84, &sigma / =13.25). Approximately 87% were female and 59.4% of the victims were aged 0-17 years. One in five victims (19.7%) was HIV positive, and most (74.4%) reported rape with vaginal penetration. Fifty-nine percent reported within 72 hours of being assaulted. The most common reason for delayed reporting (21.5%) was fear of the perpetrator. Most of the sexual assaults were committed by male (96%) and single perpetrator (90%). Nearly a third (32.4%) of the sexual violence occurred within intimate relationships and more than two-thirds (68%) knew the perpetrators. In all, 35% sustained injuries during the assault and a third (34.5%) reported the use of weapons during the assault. Nearly half of the victims (48.7%) were referred to hospital by their relatives who also accompanied them to the facility (42.1%). Of the 198 victims that were offered post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), 87% collected the full 28-day course.

A gendered analysis of the healing practices of the Johane Marange Apostolic Church in Glenview, Zimbabwe and their effect on women during pregnancy.

Kutsira, Jacob. January 2013 (has links)
This dissertation seeks to examine and analyse the healing practices within JMC in relation to health care provided to women during pregnancy. The healing practice performed in this church has made the church become popular and grow numerically. This is also exacerbated by the high cost of medical care in Zimbabwe which is a challenge especially for pregnant women. This is an empirical study which used in-depth interviews with both men and women who are married and are long serving members of JMC. The objective of the study was to find out how the healing practice within JMC contributes to women’s health during pregnancy. The study found out that; one of the teachings of this church is that members are not allowed to seek for medical help from the hospitals. Therefore women who are pregnant are supposed to receive health services only from the church. This is done in form of prayers, prophecy and use of symbols which are directed towards the protection of the mother and child from evil that is perceived to attack them during this period. The church also provides teachings to these mothers to be on how to look after themselves through the use of elderly women who act as birth attendants. The study also found out that some women decided to also seek other forms of medication like visiting hospitals despite the consequences that were put up by the leaders of the church. This study does not claim that religion cannot help women during pregnancy but rather seeks to show that while the church focuses on spiritual healing, there is also a need for a holistic approach to healing that will call on women to visit hospitals, especially when addressing issues relating to pregnancy. / Thesis (M.Th.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2013.

Bridging the Gap: Feminist Movements and their Efforts to Advance Abortion Rights in Chile

Ivanescu, Yvonne 28 October 2013 (has links)
Chile allowed therapeutic abortion (cases in which the mother’s life was in danger) from 1931 until 1989, the last year of the Pinochet military dictatorship. After Pinochet stepped down, Chile underwent a democratic transition in 1990 that was heavily reliant on a moral fundamentalist mentality, primarily influenced by the Catholic Church and conservative political parties. It has been widely argued that after the democratic transition, the previously strong and united women’s movement lost much of its visibility and cohesiveness due to its progressive fragmentation. This thesis holds that the women’s movement in Chile is not dead, but instead there are numerous small movements that apply different methods in an attempt to change abortion legislation in Chile. Through the dissemination of secondary research and first-person interviews conducted over a period of six months in Chile, the results show that Chilean third-wave feminists have re-shaped the women’s movement in an effort to introduce innovative ideas and tactics to advance abortion rights. Nonetheless, these new voices have also created tensions between new and old feminists further dividing the movement and limiting their ability to effect real change in regards to the abortion debate in Chile.

This dissertation examines narratives of scholars with prominent trajectories in the field of sexual rights in Latin America. / This work brings in its body, theoretical and ethnographic discussions about the universe of educational policies, non-formal education and its consequences and implications in the field of militancy and political activism of transpeople. I situate the context of public educational policies for transpeople and the transvestite and transsexual movement, such analysis of an institutional level and confronted with as multi-situational experiences and interpretations, which are analyzed by queer theory and other poststructuralist contributions. I relate how the space of politics and claim have been constituted in Uberaba, as well as the gender and sexuality guidelines, although it is not a recognized political policy. On the other hand, "Trans Cursinhos", which through their actions constitute a political space for transpeople, which guarantee new forms of existence and conceptualize other modes of accessing to citizenship. Thus, when addressing political experiences which are built beyond an institutionalized plan, through "doing politics" or the courses, I operate a few shifts about what is doing politics and how they weave themselves into negotiations and confrontations. This is a work about endurance, about abject lives, which have been excluded and how these lives have been resisted and invented in their own way of breathing and inspiration possibilities
