A Reflection on the use of the narrative analogy in couples' counselling : a case exampleBotha, Petro 11 1900 (has links)
Text in English / In this study the use of the narrative analogy in couple's counselling has been outlined. A literature study situates the narrative analogy within a wider philosophical framework. The underlying assumptions of the narrative analogy, both in general and in the work with couples, as well as the role of the counsellor using the narrative analogy, are explored.
A case example is described to illustrate the use of the narrative analogy. / Social Work / M. Soc. Sc. (Mental Health)

Narratives of incestPapaikonomou, Natascia 06 1900 (has links)
Incest is described by various models focusing on different factors ranging from
pathology to descriptions of the ecosystem in which it takes place. This research presents a
theoretical and practical description of father-daughter incest in a family where the father
was not removed and includes narratives of all associated systems.
Consistent with the postmodern, social constructionist and narrative theories, this study
attempts to observe and describe the ensuing process of the incest narrative through the
various systems within which it takes place. This process explores people's perceptions of
incest, how these are assessed and interpreted, what kind of action they mapped out as a
result and the possibility that the abusive narrative is being maintained. Implications for therapy with the
incest family are discussed drawing on narrative principles.
By utilising an emergent design the experiences and narratives of the family and
related systems were permitted to emerge through the research process. / Psychology / M.A. (Clinical Psychology

Deconstructing dominant stepfamily narratives : freeing silent voicesAmoore, Neil John. 12 1900 (has links)
Stepfamilies are shown by existing research as having multiple problems unique to this type of
family, some of which include role ambiguity, role strain, role captivity, increased stress and
adjustment problems in children.
Stepparents are portrayed as evil, abusive and wicked in the media, literature or film, while
stepchildren are variously portrayed as victims, naughty and manipulative.
These popular perceptions of stepfamilies appear to be shaped by myths or dominant narratives which
serve to shape stepfamily member's experience of and roles in the reconstituted family.
Drawing on the work of postmodernism, social constructionism and the narrative
theorists this study will expose those dominant narrative or myths which shape the experience of
two stepfamilies.
Using an emergent design, the experiences of these two families is described in an attempt to
highlight some of the implications such an approach holds for both further research and
psychotherapy. / Psychology / M.A. (Psychology)

Towards both-and land : a journey from answers to questions about the therapeutic selfZagnoev, Joanne 01 1900 (has links)
This thesis constitutes a narrative description of the evolution of my therapeutic self during my training as a clinical psychologist. During the telling of this story, I review the ways in which I was perturbed by the mix between the various theories and the various contexts visited during the years of my post-graduate training. I have described and critically compared my responses to the following models: psychoanalytic, psychodynamic, first-order cybernetic, and secondorder cybernetic (covering the first, second and third movements). Throughout, I have attempted to track the development of a congruent, personal therapeutic self while simultaneously assuming that this self is constantly coming-into-being. / Psychology / M.A. (Clinical Psychology)

An individual case study is used in this study, to discuss the complementarity between distance and intimacy in the therapeutic relationship. The focus is on recursive and selfreflective processes between the therapist and the client in order to explain the way in which intimate and distant interactions were coconstructed. The therapeutic process was discussed in the context of ecosystemic and social constructionist epistemologies. Research was done according to the principles of the naturalistic research paradigm and overlaps between this research paradigm and epistemologies that were discussed are brought forward through the discussion of the case study. There are also
references in this study to related issues, such as touching and boundaries in the therapeutic relationship, therapy as an a-social and paradoxical context, and the neutrality of the therapist, which connect with the theme of this study. These themes are integrated in the discussion of the case study. / Psychology / M.A. (Kliniese Sielkunde)

Co-authoring spiritual ways of being : a narrative group approach to Christian spiritualityHudson, Trevor Allan 11 1900 (has links)
This qualitatively oriented Practical Theology research project was based on a narrative enquiry into the spiritualities of five Christ-followers. These conversations occurred within a small group context, and were aimed at enabling the participants to co-author preferred spiritual ways of being. Because of my commitment to reflexive
research practice, other voices and perspectives were invited into the research process. Besides sharing in numerous reflexive conversations with my supervisors, I brought into the group three 'outside voices'. By sharing their stories, these 'outside voices' challenged privatised expressions of spirituality, introducing a 'hermeneutic of
suspicion' into the research process and enabling the research participants to wrestle with the challenges of a compassionate and ethical spirituality. In this conversational journey I was able to engage the central research question of whether a group narrative approach can facilitate the intention of Practical Theology to transform human life. / Philosophy, Practical and Systematical Theology / M. ”Får jag (bygg)lov?” : En observationsstudie om bemötande av kvinnor och män bland medarbetare på en bygglovsavdelning / ”May I have this (building) permit?” : An observational study on customer treatment among employees at a building permit department from a gender perspectiveKottorp, Emilia, Skoglund, Johanna January 2018 (has links)
The study aim to explore customer treatment at a building permit department from a gender perspective. By conducting non-participant observations of the non-verbal and verbal communication the customer treatment was analysed. The analysis worked as a foundation for the results where commonalities and differences in the treatment of female and male customers are described. The results tell of many commonalities in how the building permit employees treat their customers. The differences that was identified were mainly within the verbal communication. More assumptions were made about the male customers. More explanations about rules and regulations were made towards the female customers. Something that was observed plenty in most conversations, regardless of the customer’s gender, was explanations, clarifying and recommendations. As a conclusion a few differences in the treatment of female and male customers have been found but most categories speak of an equal treatment.

En sfär av mänskliga rättigheter : om mångfald och (o)likheter i svenska Amnesty / A sphere of human rights : diversity and (dis)similarity in Amnesty in SwedenGunnervall, Helena January 2005 (has links)
The focus of this study is the concept of diversity and the movement of Amnesty International in Sweden. The starting-point of the study is partly the unproblematic and positive way of referring to diversity in Swedish working life and the public debate and partly the decision taken by Amnesty in Sweden to introduce a “diversity-policy” in the association. The aim of the study is expressed in two steps: firstly, my aim is to analyse the understanding of Amnesty as an organisation, expressed by active Amnesty-members in Sweden. Secondly, my aim is to analyse the understanding of diversity, expressed by the members, and the way this understanding refers to the movement of Amnesty in Sweden. The empirical material is primarily based upon qualitative in-depths interviews with six active Amnesty-members. Social constructionism is used as a theoretical frame of reference and concepts as ethnicity, culture, multiculturalism and categorizing are essential in the study and used as theoretical tools in the analysis. The main results are that the image of Amnesty and its members given in the interviews, is, in principle, exclusively positive, giving no space for a discussion of discrimination in the organisation. The understanding of diversity is based upon a conception of representation of different categories of people, such as “men”, “women”, “immigrants”, “non-academics” etc. The unproblematic way of speaking of diversity run the risk of strengthen the conception of “difference” based upon different categories of people, not individuals.

O construcionismo social no contexto da estratégia saúde da família: articulando saberes e práticas / Constructionism in the contexto of Family Health Program: articulating knowledges and practicesCeliane Camargo Borges 09 August 2007 (has links)
This research brings epistemological and methodological reflections aiming to contribute to new knowledges in Healthcare, in the field of the Primary Care, problematizing the object-subject dichotomy and the monovocal discourse of knowledge and true. I propose an approach to the post-modern scientific discourse of social constructionism with the contemporary discourse of Health in the field of Primary Care, specifically in the Family Healthcare Program (ESF). Social constructionism has been described as a relational theory, in a perspective which focus the constructed, situated and relational character of knowledge. It points to the multiplicity of dialogues, concerning to what happen among people in their encounters and how do they make meaning in these interactions. The Family Healthcare Program s discourse has also in its premises the relational, contextual and constructed character in the production of the practices Thus, the objective is to construct articulations between these two discourses, pointing to the utility of this articulation. Social constructionism is proposed as a useful theoretical-practical tool contributing to the operationalization of the premises of the Program, which include: coresponsibility, sensibility to the local context, sensibility to multiplicity and sensitivity to the diversity of the social actors involved. Empirically, it is about the analysis of a hypertension group which gathers weekly in a Family Healthcare Center placed in the city of Ribeirão Preto-SP- Brazil. The concept of Relational Responsibility is used as an analytic resource, contributing with the construction of collaborative and co-responsible interventions in health. For the data collection I used the registration of the group written in the historical record; my participation in the group and the recording during the first semester of 2005; and the group diary. The analysis consisted of the transcriptions of the group conversations and extensive readings of all the conversations transcribed. From this close reading, a narrative of the group was created and placed upon various axes for purposes of analysis. The three axes selected for the analysis focused to the visibility of the conversational aspects in this group and its differentiated relational context. The first axis presents the group as a space for the expression of the participants, providing the collective construction and negotiation of needs in Health; the second axis documents the group creating a link between the health center and the community, and finally the third axis represents the way in which the group created a privileged welcoming space to the participants, favoring conversations that open up new meanings and understandings in healthcare and thus make possible transformation. In this way, the analysis points to the ways in which-through conversational processes- a stance of Relational Responsibility can promote the development of talk which allows diversity, multiplicity, connection and engagement. Thus, this understanding gives centrality to dialogical practices that promote more collaborative relationships between health professionals and users. Relational Responsibility is seen as a resource of new possibilities in Health.

Organizations have employed coaching to develop executives since the 1980s, and such practice has increased since then. Despite its wide use in organizations, there are few studies about the relationships established between the coachee, the coach and the organization, and such studies focus on the complexity of such relationships, in which there are multiple agendas of power games. Therefore, there is opportunity to deepen the understanding of triangular and dyadic relationships in executive coaching. This study is relevant as it deepens the understanding of a frequently employed organizational practice, but with few studies on the relationships between coachees, coaches and organization. The work is based on the social constructivist theoretical perspective, which aims to understand how people make sense of the world they live in and what they do, broadening, this way, the options for understanding a phenomenon. The methodological approach adopted was grounded theory, conducted in a manner consistent with social constructionism. Data were obtained with interviews of 45 people, being 16 coachees, 15 coaches and 14 professionals of Human Resources Administration. As result of the study, three main meanings on the dynamics of the relationships between the coachee, the coach and the organization were elaborated. Firstly, the triangular and dyadic relationships present in executive coaching were re-signified, suggesting that the relationships between the different actors in executive coaching have different dynamics and relevance. The relationship between the coach and the coachee is fundamental, and the maintenance of the confidentiality of the coaching sessions content, essential for preserving such relationship. Despite the importance of such relationship, the organization permeates the relationship between the coachee and the coach, since it is expected that coach and coachee will also comply with the interest of the organization. Another result elaborated from the study was a continuum, in which different coaching discourses were positioned. This continuum highlights a paradox present in executive coaching: the closer the coaching process is to the managerial discourse of coaching, prioritizing skills development to achieve organizational goals, the more coaching may assume an instrumental quality, subtracting the coachee’s relevance from the process. This has the potential to make the coaching process innocuous. Finally, a vertical dimension of executive coaching is proposed, which address topics that coaches and coachees go through during coaching sessions. This meaning offers an integrative perspective of coaching, in which different perspectives allow coachees to make meaning about their development.
