Modèles des contacts linguistiques dans l’histoire de la langue française / Models of Language Contacts in the History of the French language

Amit, Aviv 09 November 2009 (has links)
This work aims to evaluate the order in which different language contacts have occurred throughout the history of the French language. We proceed as follow: first, we integrate some theoretical approaches from different research fields: linguistics, sociology, political sciences and economics. Then, we observe the homogeneity of historical langue encounters of French with other languages, local or foreign, by developing a three-stage model (mental, political and economical) that repeats itself along the years. Using this historical model, we analyze the situation of current worldwide language contacts of French.

Straszer, Boglárka January 2011 (has links)
This thesis is a comparative sociolinguistic study which describes and compares language choice among people with Hungarian background in Sweden and Finland and studies their views on the importance of the Hungarian language and Hungarian cultural heritage for identity. The future prospects of language maintenance and language shift and differences between the Swedish-Hungarians and the Finnish-Hungarians are discussed. A survey was completed among 50 Swedish-Hungarian informants and 38 Finnish-Hungarian informants during 2006. The survey was supplemented by in-depth interviews with 15 informants during 2007. The majority language, either Swedish or Finnish, is much more active in the second-generation Hungarians’ lives than Hungarian is. Hungarian is mostly used in the domain of family relations. The language choices made today are dependent on the informant’s situation during childhood, particularly the parents’ usage of the language and the ability to learn and use Hungarian, chiefly gained through contact with the parents’ mother country and other Hungarian speakers. For some informants, having Hungarian roots forms the sole foundation for belonging, while for others it is this heritage combined with the culture, the ability to use the language or specific character traits. The Hungarian background is most often seen as a treasure offering diversity in life. Finnish-Hungarians are generally more positive about their Hungarian background, have better competence in the language and a greater awareness of the culture than Swedish-Hungarians. The Hungarian language plays a central though often symbolic role. The most important conditions for minority language preservation are language competence together with the desire and opportunity to use it; whereof the largest deficit among second-generation Hungarians is knowledge of the Hungarian language. Only one-fourth of the informants have all of the conditions necessary to be able to maintain the language, which means that Hungarian is an endangered minority language in Sweden and Finland.

Ursäkta, jag ska bara pudra näsan! : Om individers ackommodation av språkliga uttryck och grad av medvetenhet i samband med toalettbesök / Excuse me, I´ll just powder my nose! : Individuals' accommodation of linguistic expression and degree of awareness in connection with toilet visits

Tindefjord Norlander, Anna January 2019 (has links)
This sociolinguistic research examines how individuals adapt their linguistic expression in relation to toilet visits in private, public and formal contexts, as well as their degree of awareness and accommodation in sensitive contexts. A total of 362 respondents, have answered a questionnaire with both open and closed questions, which has given both quantitative and qualitative data. After processing, the empirical material has been compared with former research and theoretical perspectives, concluding that a majority of the respondents accommodate according to context and are aware of how they accommodate in formal contexts. The result also tends to that the postmodern society has influenced the social progress towards a more open style of communication in which relationships are created and cooperation is sought.

Sakhong, David January 2021 (has links)
This study aimed to examine the norms and cultures that are formed in the social interaction between students in need of special support placed in special education classes or equivalent by interviewing educators about their reflections. This study used special education theories as well as theories of language, power and culture. The method used was semi-structured interviews with six educators. The interviews were analyzed with thematic coding, which gave six themes: vocabulary, needs that could not be met, emotional states, the educators’ role and the relation between educator and student, social interactions, and the difficulty of making general statements. A conclusion that emerged was that the vocabulary that clashes with the schools’ core values was one of many factors in deciding that the student is in need of special education. Students’ norms of expressions are influenced by their environments, and at school they learn about social consequences. The educators try to give corrections when the students make a mistake, however this is not possible when the students are in a strong emotional state. To avoid strong emotional states the educators make the students feel safe in school and build relationships with them. To do their job, the educators need to build a relational capital with the students. All their labor is done to make the students become socially competent citizens. It was however difficult for the educators to make general expressions as they had a diversity of students. Some educators also expressed that there was no difference between students in special education classes and students in regular classes. This study contributes with knowledge of how the social processes such as different environments, power and educators’ guidance influence the norms of communication that are created in social interaction, which is a little studied research field.

Language shift and maintenance in the Portuguese community of Johannesburg

McDuling, Allistair James 06 1900 (has links)
The aim of the study is to provide an account of the present state of Portuguese in the Johannesburg Portuguese community, and to identify factors influencing the maintenance of, and shift from the mother tongue. South African society necessitates a knowledge and daily use of English, and sometimes Afrikaans. Literacy and proficiency in the Portuguese mother tongue is therefore rapidly decreasing, especially amongst the third generation. Despite this decline, certain factors play a role in maintaining Portuguese. The most important factors in the maintenance of the mother tongue are education, cultural activities, contact with Portugal, parental influence and positive attitudes. If measures are not taken, and an awareness created within the community of the need to create a situation of stable bilingualism, the Portuguese language will continue to be eroded. Speech in space and time : contact, change and diffusion in medieval Norway

Blaxter, Tam Tristram January 2017 (has links)
This project uses corpus linguistics and geostatistics to test the sociolinguistic typological theory put forward by Peter Trudgill on the history of Norwegian. The theory includes several effects of societal factors on language change. Most discussed is the proposal that ‘intensive’ language contact causes simplification of language grammar. In the Norwegian case, the claim is that simplificatory changes which affected all of the Continental North Germanic languages (Danish, Swedish, Norwegian) but not the Insular North Germanic Languages were the result of contact with Middle Low German through the Hanseatic League. This suggests that those simplificatory changes arose in the centres of contact with the Hanseatic League: cities with Hansa trading posts and kontors. The size of the dataset required would have made it impossible for previous scholars to test this prediction, but digital approaches render the problem tractable. I have designed a 3.5m word corpus containing nearly all extant Middle Norwegian, and developed statistical methods for examining the spread of language phenomena in time and space. The project is made up of a series of case studies of changes. Three examine simplifying phonological changes: the rise of svarabhakti (epenthetic) vowels, the change of /hv/ > /kv/ and the loss of the voiceless dental fricative. A further three look at simplifying morphological changes: the loss of 1.sg. verbal agreement, the loss of lexical genitives and the loss of 1.pl. verbal agreement. In each case study a large dataset from many documents is collected and used to map the progression of the change in space and time. The social background of document signatories is also used to map the progression of the change through different social groups. A variety of different patterns emerge for the different changes examined. Some changes spread by contagious diffusion, but many spread by hierarchical diffusion, jumping first between cities before spreading to the country at large. One common theme which runs through much of the findings is that dialect contact within the North Germanic language area seems to have played a major role: many of the different simplificatory changes may first have spread into Norwegian from Swedish or Danish. Although these findings do not exactly match the simple predictions originally proposed from the sociolinguistic typological theory, they are potentially consistent with a more nuanced account in which the major centres of contact and so simplifying change were in Sweden and Denmark rather than Norway.

Language maintenance and shift in the Greek community in Johannesburg

McDuling, Allistair James 02 1900 (has links)
Summaries in English and Greek / Keywords in English and Greek / This thesis explores the phenomenon of language shift and maintenance in the Greek community of Johannesburg, which is the largest Greek community in South Africa. The main aim of the study is to provide an account of the factors which assist in maintaining the Greek language which is under pressure from English, the dominant official language in the country. This study draws on the theoretical and methodological frameworks established in the many studies conducted on the Greek communities in the USA and Australia. The Greek community has played a significant role in assisting to shape the development of South Africa. Up until the 1980s, they were subject to discrimination from the host society; consequently, many immigrants lived together in certain suburbs and founded their own churches, clubs and schools. These factors contributed greatly to the retention of their language and culture. Since the late 1980s, the discriminatory attitude of the host society toward the immigrant communities has decreased notably, and subsequently, there has been an increased integration and assimilation into the host society. The process of assimilation has resulted, inter alia, in an increased use of English, the dominant language of the host society, consequently the retention of the mother tongue has declined. A number of factors were identified as playing an important role in the maintenance of Greek: education, religion, family, language loyalty and socio-cultural activities; and, to a lesser extent, media and overseas visits. Education has played a key role in maintaining the language, in particular through the establishment of Greek day and afternoon schools. Despite a preference for bilingual church services, the Greek Orthodox Church continues to play a vital role in the maintenance of Greek. The family, loyalty towards the language and culture and a notable pride in being Greek, and participation in socio-cultural activities contribute significantly to the maintenance of the Greek language. Despite a marked shift towards English in the younger generation, the future of Greek in South Africa may be characterized by relatively stable bilingualism, provided that current trends continue.
