Barnkonventionen fastslår att barn och ungdomars röster ska höras i frågor som rör dem. Inom stadsplaneringsprocesser finns behov av nya metoder som inkluderar ungdomar på ett meningsfullt sätt. Studien syftade till att undersöka hur deltagande design, designfiktion och ljuddesign kan kombineras för att engagera ungdomar i stadsplaneringsprocesser. Detta undersöks i studien genom att utveckla och utvärdera en metod som benämns deltagande ljudfiktion. Metoden testades med ungdomar på en fritidsgård i Vårby gård där ljudfiktioner av Vårby år 2170 skapades och diskuterades. Resultatet visade att genom diskussion och spekulation kring framtiden avslöjades viktiga insikter om ungdomarnas verklighet, vilka kan vara av värde i stadsplaneringsprocesser. Vidare fann studien att ljud kan vidga ungdomars perspektiv på sin närmiljö. Studien visade att deltagande ljudfiktion har potential att engagera ungdomar men att de hellre vill diskutera nutiden för att känna att deras röster blir hörda. / The Convention on the Rights of the Child stipulates that the voices of children and youth must be heard on issues that concern them. In urban planning processes there is a need for new methods that include youth in a meaningful way. The study aimed to investigate how participatory design, design fiction and sound design can be combined to engage youth in urban planning processes. This is investigated in the study by developing and evaluating a method called participatory sound fiction. The method was tested with youths in a youth center in Vårby gård where sound fictions of Vårby in 2170 were created and discussed. The results showed that through discussion and speculation about the future, important insights were revealed about the youths' reality, which can be of value in urban planning processes. Furthermore, the study found that sound can broaden youths’ perspective on their immediate environment. The study showed that participatory sound fiction has the potential to engage youths, but that they prefer to discuss the present in order to feel that their voices are being heard.

Suite à un état de l'art détaillant la création et l'utilisation de l'espace sonore dans divers environnements urbains virtuels (soundmaps, jeux vidéo, réalité augmentée), il s'agira de déterminer une méthodologie et des techniques de conception pour les espaces sonores urbains virtuels du point de vue de l'immersion, de l'interface et de la dramaturgie.ces développements se feront dans le cadre du projet terra dynamica, tendant vers une utilisation plurielle de la ville virtuelle (sécurité et sureté, transports de surface, aménagement de l'urbanisme, services de proximité et citoyens, jeux). le principal objectif du doctorat sera de déterminer des réponses informatiques concrètes à la problématique suivante : comment, en fonction de leur utilisation anticipée, les espaces sonores urbains virtuels doivent-ils être structurés et avec quels contenus?la formalisation informatique des solutions étayées au fil du doctorat et la création du contenu sonore illustrant le projet seront basés sur l'analyse de données scientifiques provenant de domaines variés tels que la psychologie de la perception, l'architecture et l'urbanisme, l'acoustique, la recherche esthétique (musicale) ainsi que sur l'observation et le recueil de données audio-visuelles du territoire urbain, de manière à rendre compte tant de la richesse du concept d'espace sonore que de la multiplicité de ses déclinaisons dans le cadre de la ville virtuelle. / In video gaming and interactive media, the making of complex sound ambiences relies heavily on the allowed memory and computational resources. So a compromise solution is necessary regarding the choice of audio material and its treatment in order to reach immersive and credible real-time ambiences. Alternatively, the use of procedural audio techniques, i.e. the generation of audio content relatively to the data provided by the virtual scene, has increased in recent years. Procedural methodologies seem appropriate to sonify complex environments such as virtual cities.In this thesis we specifically focus on the creation of interactive urban sound ambiences. Our analysis of these ambiences is based on the Soundscape theory and on a state of art on game oriented urban interactive applications. We infer that the virtual urban soundscape is made of several perceptive auditory grounds including a background. As a first contribution we define the morphological and narrative properties of such a background. We then consider the urban background sound as a texture and propose, as a second contribution, to pinpoint, specify and prototype a granular synthesis tool dedicated to interactive urban sound backgrounds.The synthesizer prototype is created using the visual programming language Pure Data. On the basis of our state of the art, we include an urban ambiences recording methodology to feed the granular synthesis. Finally, two validation steps regarding the prototype are described: the integration to the virtual city simulation Terra Dynamica on the one side and a perceptive listening comparison test on the other.

Designing nonverbal utterances by nonhuman characters : How clearly can emotions and characteristics be conveyed?

This research seeks to explore the concept of voice design, specifically voice design for non-human characters that do not communicate using words. The idea was to mimic the vocal contours of human non-verbal vocal expression with a synthesizer to achieve emotional clarity, as well as make it sound less like a machine and more like a fleshed-out character. The background investigates how humans can communicate emotions with non-verbal vocal expressions along with principles for sound design for Human-Robot interaction and methods for voice design/processing in film.  This to build an idea on how to proceed when designing a non-verbal character voice. A listening test was conducted where participants would rate valence and energy levels in emotional utterances made by humans and emotional utterances that had been created using a synthesizer. As well as provide insight on what type of character could be creating the sounds made with the synthesizer. The results suggest that although the synthesized sounds lacked emotional clarity, they were still enough to give the participants an idea of a character.

Cette thèse de recherche-création explore certaines des causes esthétiques, techniques et inter- artistiques qui font du cinéma un domaine privilégié pour l’étude du son. Les hypothèses de cette recherche sont formulées à partir de ma posture de concepteur sonore pour le cinéma et émergent des conditions pratiques et esthétiques singulières ayant menées à la création sonore de différentes œuvres. La première partie de la thèse explore ces trois axes (esthétique, technique et inter- artistique) par la mise en résonance d’expériences pratiques et de recherches théoriques : mon travail de conception sonore pour le film Le silence des semences (Guillaume Roussel-Garneau, 2021) m’amène d’abord à rendre compte de l’émergence du courant expressiviste à la fin du XVIIIe siècle (Taylor) et de la reprise de l’expression comme modèle théorique en art (Abrams) pour ensuite mettre ces modèles à l’épreuve des théories du son au cinéma (Chion, Fano) ; mon travail de post-production sonore pour le film Le rêve et la radio (Renaud Després-Larose et Ana Tapia- Rousiouk, 2022) m’entraîne à explorer ce qui, dans la nature mécanique et matérielle du son capté, monté et reproduit par différentes techniques (Altman, Lastra, Schaeffer, Schafer, Cardinal), permet de rejouer ces tensions entre représentation et expression ; ma « sensibilité technicienne » (Tapia-Rousiouk) me permet de faire l’étude des modes d’articulation et d’interaction des sons entre eux, avec l’image, avec le spectateur ou l’auditeur ; ces modes d’articulation et d’interaction sont empruntés aux autres arts sonores, et ils survivent dans l’univers cinématographique à travers les œuvres et la pratique des musiciens et créateurs sonores Ernst Karel (Heard Laboratories, Heard Laboratories Performed, Leviathan) et Christian Calon (Continental Divide). La deuxième partie de cette thèse prend la forme de quatre œuvres sonores crées pour l’exposition La couleur du temps, le son d’un espace, présentée au Centre d’exposition de l’Université de Montréal à l’été 2022. Chacune d’elles, par leur mise en scène du son, de l’écoute et du corps, permettent de rejouer ces enjeux esthétiques et techniques fondamentaux de la création sonore au cinéma : tension entre espace sonore et espace visuel ; matérialité du sonore, entre sens et sensation ; malléabilité des qualités temporelles du son ; qualités transformatives de l’écoute, tant au niveau de la création que de la réception. / This research-creation thesis explores some of the aesthetic, technical and inter-artistic reasons that make cinema a privileged field for the study of sound. The hypotheses of this research are formulated from my position as a sound designer for film and emerge from the singular practical and aesthetic conditions that led to the sound design of different works. The first part of the thesis explores this question along these three axes (aesthetic, technical and inter-artistic) through practical experiences and theoretical research. My sound design work for the film Le silence des semences (Guillaume Roussel-Garneau, 2021) leads me first to recount the emergence of the expressivist current at the end of the 18th century (Taylor) and the use of expression as a theoretical model in art (Abrams) and then confront these models to theories on sound in cinema (Chion, Fano). My audio post-production work for the film Le rêve et la radio (Renaud Després-Larose and Ana Tapia-Rousiouk, 2022) leads me to explore what, in the mechanical and material nature of recorded, edited and reproduced sound with the use of sound reproduction technologies (Altman, Lastra, Schaeffer, Schafer, Cardinal), replays the tensions between representation and expression. My “technical sensibility” (Tapia-Rousiouk) allows me to study the modes of articulation and interaction between sounds, between sound and image, with the spectator or the listener. These modes of articulation and interaction are borrowed from other sound arts, and they survive in the cinematic world through the works and practice of musicians and sound artists such as Ernst Karel (Heard Laboratories, Heard Laboratories Performed, Leviathan) and Christian Calon (Continental Divide). The second part of this thesis takes the form of four sound works created for the exhibition La couleur du temps, le son d’un espace, presented at the Centre d'exposition de l'Université de Montréal in the summer of 2022. Each of these works, through their staging of sound, listening and the body, reformulate these fundamental aesthetic and technical questions regarding sound creation in cinema: the tension between auditory space and visual space; the materiality of sound, between meaning and sensation; the plasticity of the temporal qualities of sound; the transformative qualities of listening, both in terms of creation and reception.

MODELING AND SIMULATION OF CUTTING MECHANICS IN CFRP MACHINING AND ITS MACHINING SOUND ANALYSIS

<p>Carbon fiber bending during Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) milling is an important factor on the quality of the machined surface. When the milling tool rotates, the fiber first contacts the rake face instead of the tool edge at a certain cutting angle, then the fiber is bent instead of being cut by the tool. It causes the matrix and the fiber to fall out, and the fiber is broken from deep inside the machined surface. The broken fibers are pulled out as the tool rotates, which is known as pull-out fibers. The machining defect is the main cause of deteriorating the quality of the machined surface. To reduce such machining defects, it is important to predict the carbon fiber bending during CFRP milling. However, it is difficult to determine a point where fiber bending occurs because the fiber cutting angle changes every moment as the tool rotates. Therefore, in this study, CFRP milling simulation was performed to numerically analyze the machining parameters such as fiber cutting angle, fiber length, and the magnitude of fiber bending according to the different milling conditions. In addition, the deformation of the matrix existing between carbon fibers is predicted based on the fiber bending information obtained through simulation, and matrix shear strain energy model is developed. Also, the relationship between the matrix shear strain energy and machining quality is analyzed. Through verification experiments under various machining conditions, it is confirmed that the quality of the machined surface deteriorated as the matrix shear strain energy increased. Moreover, this study analyzed the fiber cutting mechanism considering bent fibers during CFRP milling and proposed a method to identify the type of machining mechanism through machining sound analysis. Through experiments, it was verified that fiber bending or defects can be identified through machining sound analysis in the high-frequency range between 7,500 Hz and 14,800 Hz. From the analysis, the effect of different chip thickness in up-milling and down-milling on fiber bending was investigated by analyzing simulation and sound signal. From machining experiments, the effect of this difference on cutting force and machining quality was verified. Lastly, we developed a minimum chip thickness and fiber fracture model in CFRP milling and analyzed the effect of fractured fibers on the machining sound. Carbon fibers located below the minimum chip thickness do not contact the tool edge and are compressed by the bottom face of the tool, and these fibers are excessively bent and broken. As these broken fibers are discharged while scratching the flank face of the tool, a loud machining sound is generated. Moreover, through the verification experiment, it was confirmed that the number of broken fibers is proportional to the loudness of the sound, and calculated number of broken fibers for one second using the fiber fracture model coincides with the high-frequency machining sound range of 7,500 Hz to 14,800 Hz.</p>

Designing Multimodal Warning Signals for Cyclists of the Future

Traffic is a complex environment in which many actors take part; several new technologies bring promises of reducing this complexity. However, cyclists—a particularly vulnerable road user group—have so far been somewhat put aside in these new developments, among them being Cooperative Intelligent Traffic Systems (C-ITS) and their aspects of human–computer interaction. This master’s thesis of industrial design engineering presents five multimodal collision warning signals for cyclists—future ones in these supposed C-ITS—using a novel application of bone conduction headphones (BCH) via sensations of both sound and touch. The thesis project was conducted as a complementary subset of the larger research project ‘V2Cyclist’ orchestrated by RISE Interactive. V2Cyclist set out to adapt the wireless V2X-protocol for cyclists by developing a physical prototype in the form of a bicycle helmet and corresponding human–computer interface. A significant part of the theoretical framework for this thesis was multiple resource theory: tasks in a different modality can be performed more effectively than in one already taxed attentively. Literature on human factors was also applied, particularly with regards to the perception of sound; evidence suggests that humans evolved a perceptual bias for threatening and ‘looming’ sounds that appear to encroach our peripersonal space; ethological findings point toward the association with low-frequency sounds to largeness. Sound design techniques usually applied to more artistic ends, such as synthesis and mixing, were repurposed for the novel, audiotactile context of this thesis. The thesis process was rooted in design thinking and consisted of four stages: context immersion, ideation, concept development, and lastly evaluation; converging and diverging the novel design space of using BCH in an audiotactile, i.e. bimodal way. The divergent approach generated a wide range of ideas. The later convergent approach did not result in one, definite design as further evaluation is required but also due to unknowns in terms of future hardware and network constraints. Given the plurality and diversity of cyclists, it may well follow that there is no optimal collision warning design in the singular. Hence, a range of five different solutions is presented. Each of the five multimodal collision warnings presents a different approach to conveying a sense of danger and urgency. Some warning signals are static in type, while others are more dynamic. Given the presumed rarity of collision warnings, multiple design techniques and rationales were applied separately, as well as in combination, to create different warning stimuli that signaled high urgency in an intuitive way. Namely, the use of: conventions in design and culture; explicitness in the form of speech; visceral appeal via threatening and animalistic timbres; dynamic and procedurally generated feedback; multimodal salience; crossmodal evocation of ‘roughness;’ size-sound symbolism to imply largeness; and innately activating characteristics of looming sounds. / Trafiken är en komplex miljö med många deltagare; diverse ny teknik gör anspråk på att underlätta denna komplexitet. Men, cyklister—en särskilt utsatt grupp av trafikanter—har hittills hamnat i skymundan för sådana utvecklingar. Vidare, aspekten av användbara gränssnitt för cyklister inom sådana uppkopplade och samverkande trafiksystem (C-ITS) har utforskats desto mindre. Det här examensarbetet inom Teknisk design presenterar fem multimodala kollisionsvarningar avsedda för cyklister—framtida sådana i dessa C-ITS—genom en ny och bimodal användning av benledande hörlurar via både ljud och vibrationer. Examensarbetet genomfördes i koppling till forskningsprojektet V2Cyclist, orkestrerat av RISE Interactive, vars projektmål var att anpassa det trådlösa kommunikationsprotokollet V2X för cyklister via en fysisk prototyp i form av en cykelhjälm och parallellt utveckla ett tillhörande användargränssnitt. En viktig del av det teoretiska ramverket för det här examensarbetet grundar sig på multiple resource theory: uppgifter kan utföras mer effektivt i en annan modalitet än i en som redan är belastad med uppmärksamhet. Mänskliga faktorer och teori om vår uppfattning användes; bevis pekar på att människor har evolutionärt utvecklat en bias för hotande ljud som upplevs inkräkta på vårt närmsta personliga revir; etologiska rön visar på en koppling mellan lågfrekventa ljud och ‘storhet.’ Tekniker inom ljuddesign vanligtvis använda till mer artistiska ändamål, såsom syntes och mixning, användes här till godo för att utforska den nya och bimodala designrymden. Processen för arbetet grundade sig i design thinking och bestod av fyra faser: kontextfördjupning, idégenerering, konceptutveckling, och utvärdering. En ny och tidigare outforskad designrymd beståendes av en bimodal, ljudtaktil användning av benledande hörlurar divergerades och konvergerades. Ett initialt utforskande angreppssätt gav upphov till en bred mängd av idéer. Ett senare renodlande angreppssätt gick, dock, inte hela vägen till endast en optimal lösning, då vidare utvärdering krävs men också på grund av okända teknologiska begränsningar. Dessutom, givet cyklisters stora mångfald, kan det möjligtvis följa att det inte finns någon enskild design av den optimala kollisionsvarningen. Ett spann på fem olika lösningar presenteras därmed. Fem koncept för multimodala kollisionsvarningar presenteras där varje variant uttrycker fara och kritiskhet på olika sätt. Vissa är statiska i typ, medan andra verkar mer kontinuerligt och dynamiskt. Det antogs att kollisionsvarningar sker sällan. Olika designtekniker och motiveringar har använts, ibland i kombination med varandra, för att skapa kollisionsvarningar vars avsikter omedelbart förstås: normer inom design och kultur gällande ljud; uttalad kommunikation i form av tal; anspråk på människors biologiska intuition via hotfulla och djurliknande klangfärger; dynamisk och procedurellt genererad feedback; multimodal effektfullhet; korsmodal känsla av grova texturer; size-sound symbolism för att antyda ‘storhet;’ samt de naturligt aktiverande egenskaperna hos looming sounds.

Which compound-earcon's attributes may improve a player's performance in a search-oriented gameplay: rhythm vs timbre?

Earcons are commonly used by sound designers in order to support visual cues in a game andto make a gaming experience more enjoyable. This study covers two earcons’ attributes: rhythm and timbre. Rhythm and timbre attributes were chosen according to the earcon sounddesign guidelines from the previous studies. An experiment in a form of a video game was conducted in order to research whether one of the conditions can increase a players’performance. A subject had to choose the correct key to the door in order to go to the next location. There were 3 different locations and there were totally 5 different own-designed earcons: 1 incorrect earcon in the both conditions and 2 different correct earcons in each condition. 20 subjects with various gaming experience from the Luleå University of Technology participated in the experiment. The subjects were randomly divided into two groups with different conditions: rhythm and timbre. The amount of wrong trials and completion time were analyzed for each condition and the results were given with the help of Mann-Whitney U-test and t-test calculations. The results of U-test showed that there was a significant difference between two groups in terms of the wrong trials amount. Group with rhythm condition showed better performance in terms of the wrong trials amount. The t-test showed a significant difference between the two groups in terms of completion time. Group with timbre condition showed better timing performance, although considering the analysis it did not increase their performance in terms of making correct choices. Further research might be recommended on comparing various earcon attributes in different ecologically valid scenarios.

La structure du document est conçu selon un schéma relativement uniforme et comporte, pour chaque partie, une présentation générale de la thématique apportant des éléments théoriques et des données relatives à l’état de l’art, suivie de développements spécifiques permettant de converger vers les sujets d’étude propres à chaque thème – explicitement, formalisme modal dans la synthèse par modélisation physique, pour la partie "Synthèse" ; mesure et contrôle de la directivité des instruments de musique, pour la partie "Reproduction" ; timbre et identification des sources sonores, pour la partie "Perception"– puis d’une présentation détaillée des travaux personnels relatifs à chacun des sujets, le cas échéant, sous la forme d’un article publié. Ces divers éléments de connaissance et d’expérience propose donc une contribution personnelle et originale, volontairement inscrite dans un cadre de recherche élargi, pluridisciplinaire et appliqué. / This dissertation presents a composition of studies and research works articulated around three main topics : synthesis, reproduction and perception of sounds, considering both musical and environmental sounds. Moreover, it focuses on an application field, the sound design, that globally involves the conception of intentional everyday sounds. The document is based on a rather uniform structure and contains, for each part, a general presentation of the topic which brings theoretical elements together with an overview of the state-of-the-art, followed by more precise developments in order to focus on the specific matters related to each topic – in detail, modal formalism in sound synthesis by physical modeling, for the "Synthesis" section ; measurement and control of musical instruments directivity, for the "Reproduction" section ; timbre and sound sources identification, for the "Perception" section – and then followed by a detailed presentation of the personal works related to each matter, in some cases, in the form of published papers. Then, these several elements of knowledge and experience offer a personal and original contribution, deliberately put in a broad, multidisciplinary and applied framework.
