The Little Weird: Self and Consciousness in Contemporary, Small-press, Speculative Fiction

Bradley, Darin Colbert 05 1900 (has links)
This dissertation explores how contemporary, small-press, speculative fiction deviates from other genres in depicting the processes of consciousness in narrative. I study how the confluence of contemporary cognitive theory and experimental, small-press, speculative fiction has produced a new narrative mode, one wherein literature portrays not the product of consciousness but its process instead. Unlike authors who worked previously in the stream-of-consciousness or interior monologue modes, writers in this new narrative mode (which this dissertation refers to as "the little weird") use the techniques of recursion, narratological anachrony, and Ulric Neisser's "ecological self" to avoid the constraints of textual linearity that have historically prevented other literary modes from accurately portraying the operations of "self." Extrapolating from Mieke Bal's seminal theory of narratology; Tzvetan Todorov's theory of the fantastic; Daniel C. Dennett's theories of consciousness; and the works of Darko Suvin, Robert Scholes, Jean Baudrillard, and others, I create a new mode not for classifying categories of speculative fiction, but for re-envisioning those already in use. This study, which concentrates on the work of progressive, small-press, speculative writers such as Kelly Link, Forrest Aguirre, George Saunders, Jeffrey Ford, China Miéville, and many others, explores new ideas about narrative "coherence" from the points of view of self as they are presented today by cognitive, narratological, psychological, sociological, and semiotic theories.

Hegelov i Aristotelov pojam filozofije o praktičkom / Hegel's and Aristotle's concept of philosophy of practical

Jovančević Dejan 19 September 2016 (has links)

Pojam=logos praktičkog u Aristotela stoga nema teorijski i retrospektivni karakter u samom praktičkom kako to izvodi hermeneutička filozofija, već upravo jeste suština praktičkog odnošenja koju izlaže i ističe Aristotelova praktička filozofija. Logička razlika leži u Hegelovom određenju ideje praktičkog saznanja=ideje objektivnog duha i apsolutne ideje u sistemu spekulativne logike.
/
In the paper we are trying to show that Hegel's concepts of speculative logic, history and objective spirit are enabling us to fully understand Aristotle's concept of practical and its development. Aristotle’s practical philosophy brings the being of practical down to the concept=logos, and the ruling concept=logos, that is not beyond the a-logical=desire, enables the effectiveness=energy of the practical. Therefore, with Aristotle, the concept=logos of practical does not have a historical and retrospective nature in the practical itself the way hermeneutic philosophy derives it, but it is the very essence of the practical relation proposed and accented by Aristotle’s philosophy of practical.
Speculative concept of the practical is the point of unity between Aristotle’s and Hegel’s philosophy. Hegel, in the concept of political=inner state as ethical life overrules with retention Aristotle’s logos of polis entelechy=concept of the effectiveness of the city-state. The difference between Aristotle’s and Hegel’s philosophy on practical is historical, systematic and logical. The historical difference is in Hegel’s placement of modern principle of subjectivity as the right of one’s individuality to satisfaction into the concept of civil system of the philosophy of right, and in the specific consequential socialization as both a private affair and a state one. Logical difference is in the Hegel’s specification of the idea of practical cognition=idea of the objective spirit and an absolute idea in the system of speculative logic.

Technics and Music : some remarks on the process of exteriorization in music

Hejl, Matouš January 2017 (has links)
The delegating of thought, memory and action outside of the human body, inseparable from the process of individuation and identity formation, and the following implications for music establish an underlying theme of this text. It is a reflection on the process of "supplementation," of prosthetization or exteriorization in the recent and contemporary milieu of music making, in which nothing is any longer immediately at hand, where everything is found mediated and instrumentalized, technicized, unbalanced.

Det post-antibiotiska köket : En dystopisk designspekulation om framtidens köksobjekt / The Post-Antibiotic Kitchen : A dystopic design speculation about the future objects of the kitchen

Grahn, Ebba January 2019 (has links)
In the degree work The Post-Antibiotic Kitchen the societal issue concerning antibiotic resistance has been explored through design. The purpose of the project has been to bring attention and spread knowledge about the growing resistance and current consumption of antibiotics. Speculative design has been the used design method and the goal has been to create five objects that will influence and motivate an audience to change the present usage of antibiotics. Through thorough research on the issue and on a future without antibiotics, a scenario has been formulated. The scenario takes place 30 years in the future, in 2049, in a world where there are no longer any functioning antibiotics. How will a day to day activity, such as cooking a meal, be performed when a small cut could lead to a deadly infection? Based on research, workshops and conversations five objects were created; a knife to prevent cut- and stab injuries, protective gloves, non-slip shoes, a face-guard and bacteria spices. Five objects that could be a part of the post-antibiotic kitchen and the daily life unless we change our current behavior today. /

Persson, Simon, Larsson, Simon January 2019 (has links)
In this Bachelor thesis we explore what smartphone usage could be like in the near future. With design fiction as the central method of approach, we create real life diegetic prototypes that, with their appearance and functionalities, tell of a possible future world of smartphone use. Our diegetic prototypes come from a fictitious scenario, based on aspects derived from science fact, containing smartphone use, the smartphone’s technological evolution and estimated role in the near future. With Scenariometoden (“The scenario method”), our own method Lager-på-lager (“Layer-on-layer”) and Bleecker’s (2009) interpretation of design fiction, we can base our fantasy and speculation on these aspects, to imagine what it one day could be like. Löwgren and Stolterman’s (2004) book “Design av informationsteknik” contributes methodology that assists us with tools for realizing our design-fictional reality production, where the focus is on idea generation and questioning as well as an abstract picture of how design situations begin which we use as an appliance throughout the design work. We not only get an insight into what smartphone use could be like in the near future, but also how design fiction can be used in speculative study, where science fact, design and fiction meet and become one.

Metropolização e o discurso da modernidade na reposição da periferia: o bairro do Cabuçu no município de Guarulhos / Metropolises and the discourse of modernity in the replacement of the periphery: the neighborhood of Cabuçu in Guarulhos

André Luiz de Carvalho 03 March 2011 (has links)
This task has as na aim of study the relation which involves the suburb and its processo f replacement in São Paulo city, having as a fundamental support the accomplished study in Cabuçu district in Guarulhos city. The complexity, for the time being keeps diferent analysis in the way of its interpretation starting from this pretext what studies in this task is the presente situation of São Paulo metropolis suburb according to the promises of modernity in the relation to the suburb development. This modernity with the capital evolution takes private property institution to the center point, changing it into the most principal marks of the modern society. Among so many alternatives around the present urban complexity, the done choice here was to analyse the suburb as the reality of associate space that, by the point of view of this bigger reprodution must be constantly replaced in the metropolis land not excluding contradictions inherent into this process. However, this constant movement goes to its own urban way which is remade from a capital logic and impossibility in reaching modernity promises. The metropolis gets to the present moment as a territory that, among several developments, begings emphasizing the link between speculative capital and real state market. From this point, the intensification of speculative real state comes and it is articulated in the metropolis land. By as consequences, the suburb repositiion that gets worse according to the misery which becomes bigger in the dwellings and also becomes being na articulated movement in the same metropolis.

Dystopia and the divided kingdom : twenty-first century British dystopian fiction and the politics of dissensus

Welstead, Adam January 2019 (has links)
This doctoral thesis examines the ways in which contemporary writers have adopted the critical dystopian mode in order to radically deconstruct the socio-political conditions that preclude equality, inclusion and collective political appearance in twenty-first century Britain. The thesis performs theoretically-informed close readings of contemporary novels from authors J.G. Ballard, Maggie Gee, Sarah Hall and Rupert Thomson in its analysis, and argues that the speculative visions of Kingdom Come (2006), The Flood (2004), The Carhullan Army (2007) and Divided Kingdom (2005) are engaged with a wave of contemporary dystopian writing in which the destructive and divisive forms of consensus that are to be found within Britain's contemporary socio-political moment are identified and challenged. The thesis proposes that, in their politically-engaged extrapolations, contemporary British writers are engaged with specifically dystopian expressions of dissensus. Reflecting key theoretical and political nuances found in Jacques Rancière's concept of 'dissensus', I argue that the novels illustrate dissensual interventions within the imagined political space of British societies in which inequalities, oppressions and exclusions are endemic - often proceeding to present modest, 'minor' utopian arguments for more equal, heterogeneous and democratic possibilities in the process. Contributing new, theoretically-inflected analysis of key speculative fictions from twenty-first century British writers, and locating their critiques within the literary, socio-political and theoretical contexts they are meaningfully engaged with, the thesis ultimately argues that in interrogating and reimagining the socio-political spaces of twenty-first century Britain, contemporary writers of dystopian fiction demonstrate literature working in its most dissensual, political and transformative mode.

In recent years, design has also come to be regarded as an academic research approach that appropriates design practice as a means of building objects in order to achieve new knowledge - known as research through design (RtD). Taking into consideration that the process of developing an academic research work goes through a stage of identification and construction of the problem to be investigated, this dissertation discusses the impact of the development of critical artifacts in the construction of academic research problems. Critical artifacts are those created from critical practice, an RtD approach that proposes reflection through provocative strategies. A method has been developed comprising three workshops, in which eight master students explored their own research problems through the development of critical artifacts. The 25 artifacts created were analyzed using the Matrix of Common Argument Types and the Portfolio Annotations methods. Focus groups were carried out with the designers-researchers and later analyzed through the Content Analysis tool. It was concluded that (i) critical artifacts allow researchers to reach new insights about their own research themes, through Exploratory and Solving Attitudes; (ii) the practice of the critical practice can be located in three different moments of an academic research, with varied benefits; (iii) critical artifacts incorporate knowledge about the research they explore, which allows them to function as unusual means of popularizing academic knowledge. Finally, design guidelines are proposed to benefit future exercises in similar contexts.

Made available in DSpace on 2016-04-25T18:40:41Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Jose Milton Almeida da Silva.pdf: 951427 bytes, checksum: 2eb314059433ac66640426ac17114465 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-10-05 / The central goal of this research was to increase the debating about efficacy from rules, legal actions and Corporate governance to protect the non qualified minority shareholders in the Brazilian IPOs (Initial Public Offering) programs. The theme has showed growing interest, because the number of personal investors and the Bovespa s (São Paulo Stock Exchange) IPO market has been in progress strongly. The event study was the methodology used to measure the abnormal returns in the portfolio s samples with between 23 and 98 shares from 106 IPOs going public in 2004-07, using de market price from January, 2004 to June, 2008. Further, four statistic tests were applied to detect if the speculative bubble dynamic affected the Bovespa from January, 1999 to June, 2008. The empiric results from event study evidenced the overpricing phenomenon measured from the offering price to the market price at the end of the first day of trading estimated between 4,80% and 9,26%, and a underpricing phenomenon in the sequel. The cumulative average abnormal returns, ruled out of the first day return, achieved -11,52% at the end of the 6º month, -16,60% at the end of the 12º month and -35,74% at the end of the 24º month, presented a underperfomance phenomenon with economic and statistic significance, widely documented by the academy, specially on the north American capital market. The empiric results from four statistic tests showed, with statistic significance, that speculative bubble dynamic affected the Ibovespa (Index of São Paulo Stock Exchange) in the period from January, 1999 to June, 2008. Thus, evidences were found of the minority shareholders that bought shares in the Bovespa s IPOs programs in the studied period were induced by market anomalies to overpay the share s portfolios. Consequently, the research suggests that actions to improve the rules, legal actions and Corporate governance is necessary to protect of the non qualified minority shareholders in the Brazilian capital market / Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo central ampliar as discussões quanto à eficácia das normas, procedimentos e Governança Corporativa na proteção dos acionistas minoritários não qualificados nos processos de IPO s (Initial Public Offering) ou abertura de capital das companhias no mercado de capitais brasileiro.
