Storied Subjects: Posthuman Subjectivization Through Narrative in Post-1960 American Print and Televisual Narrative

Hawk, Julie 05 May 2012 (has links)
This dissertation theorizes the ramifications of new media forms of narrative on subjectivization by tracing the evolution of the observer through its permutations as second-order observer, witness, director, and narrative agent and demonstrating the various interacting processes involved in the recursive feedback loops between and among, self, world, and story. In this project, I ex-plore novels by contemporary U.S. authors John Barth, Richard Powers, Don DeLillo, and David Foster Wallace, as well as two televisual texts, Battlestar Galactica and Dollhouse. Drawing from several seemingly disparate theories, I situate my argument in the interstices of systems theory (Luhmann, Clarke), psychoanalysis (Lacan, Butler), media theory (Ellis, Fiske, Buonanno), and posthuman theory (Hayles, Badmington), putting forth a theoretical lens I call posthuman narrative onto-epistemology. The study thus fits into overlapping critical conversations. The extended treatment of five contemporary American novels situates Storied Subjects in conversations surrounding postmodernism and posthumanism as well as conversations surrounding these particular authors. For example, in the first chapter, I argue that the John Barth’s Giles Goat-Boy and Richard Powers’s Galatea 2.2 incorporate the observer from systems theory into the narrative frame, catalyzing an ontological and epistemological shift. In the second chapter, I show the ways in which Don DeLillo’s novels White Noise and Underworld demonstrate what John Ellis calls the “witness” ontology as well as the evolution of that ontology into what I call the “direc-tor” in David Foster Wallace’s Infinite Jest. In addition, the chapter devoted to televisual texts intervenes in an important, though often marginalized, conversation surrounding the importance of situating televisual narratives in dialogue with print fiction, arguing that we must attend to TV texts if we are to understand the texture of contemporary print fiction, which is saturated with the language of TV. In the final chapter, I explore the development of the “narrative agent” ontology, examining both form and content of the televisual texts Battlestar Galactica and Dollhouse in order to argue that, once second-order observation reaches a prolonged critical awareness, the observer’s observation runs alongside her or his ability to intervene in the narrative, which allows for changing the story itself.

The dispositive of truth: an analysis from the thought of Michel Foucault

Pablo Severiano Benevides 12 July 2013 (has links)
This research that contains as support and source the thought of the french philosopher Michel Foucault consists of analyzing the dispositive of truth formation. However, this study is not an exegesis of Foulcaultâs thought: along this journey other authours were used such as Friedrich Nietzsche and Gilles Deleuze. The first four chapters consist of an anarchaeogenealogical analysis on the dispositive of the truth formation, while the last four is devoted to an analysis of the subjectivization forms that occur inherent to the dispositive of truth. Thus, this work starts questioning the problematizations raised by Foucault about the truth: this is about the truth itself or solely about the systems of truth, or about the truth effects or even about the politics of truth? So, this is the truth itself or simply a set of things taken as truth? Assuming it is indeed the truth itself that is at play, the notion of dispositive actually appears to inscribe the truth in a field of immanence and reality. The next step is an archaeological analysis of an entire philosophical field formed by the Theories of Truth and the philosophies of Plato, Kant, Descartes and Habermas, precisely because they operate with the truth not at the level of immanence, but in the level of transcendence. Thus, the truth appears as thoughtless and the thought restates as naturally inclined to it. Then, it follows a genealogical review about the dispositive of truth which investigates it from the standpoint of the will and the value of truth. Provided with the thought of Nietzsche and Foucault, this analysis shows in what consists the lie of the truth. The third movement moves to the record of an anarchaeological analysis-attitude that implies a rejection of the power of truth, and is when some indispensable notions to the politics of truth are situated: power, resistance, critique, ideology, governmentality. Ended the first step, this study follows on with an analysis of the forms of subjectivity that occur in the immanence of the dispositive of truth, and it starts with a thematization of the subject constitution from the political practice and ethics of parrhesia as well as its consequences on the themes of the care of the self, the true life and the cynicism. The following is an analysis of the antinomies of the educative reason in the dispositive of the truth: a set of conflicting discursive formations which deal with the issues of permanence and purpose of education, as well as the difference between those who teaches and those who are taught. These antinomies were extracted from the principles present in the Christian guidance and in the ancient guidance practices. Subsequently, there is an analysis of the forms of production and extortion of the truth of the self practiced from the psychological field - especially by the ways in which the procedure of confession (aveu) is agencied by it. This work ends with the themes of relationship between the truth of the self and the prison of the self from the subjective positions configured under the sign of autonomy, freedom and authenticity.

: En kvalitativ diskursiv läsning av debatten rörande nyandlighet i Kyrkans tidning / What space is there for alternative spirituality in the Church of Sweden? : A qualitative discourse-reading of the debate regarding alternative spirituality in the magazine Kyrkans tidning

Göransson, David January 2016 (has links)
This essay, “What space is there for alternative spirituality in the Church of Sweden?” has as its purpose to discover the discourse or discourses that is to be found regarding spirituality within the Church of Sweden. Also to analyse how the picture of spirituality is created within the Church of Sweden. This will be done through a qualitative reading of articles published during the years 2014–2015 with connection to the topic spirituality in the magazine Kyrkans tidning (The church’s newspaper). The material will be analysed using discourse theory with a social constructivism perspective. The result of the analysis points out three main discourses regarding spirituality within the Church of Sweden. The analysis also puts light on how the apparent antagonism affects the future of the congregation. This through comparing the essays result with other studies in the field.

La mémoire et l’imaginaire dans les romans de Dickens de 1840 à 1870 / Memory and the Imagination in Dickens’s Novels, 1840-1870

Hamdi, Sabeur 12 January 2013 (has links)
Dickens formulates a project of memory which extends over several of his novels published between1840 and 1870. This dimension of his work is to be situated between the two poles of memoria – aninstitutionalized form of technical memory developed during the classic and medieval periods – and asubjective, Proustian memory. The novels studied here are built on an enactment of this combinationthrough which the agencies of the individual and society are related to the themes of Law, knowledge, and desire. They are “books of memory” that totalize the psychic and social worlds represented infiction by using metaphorical and logical material peculiar to the art of memory and to mnemonicphenomena. However, this system of memory corresponds to that which orders the coordinates of reality as to thatwhich disturbs them. It is a way of representing the effort of symbolization as well as the factor thatimpedes, subverts, or perverts it. The characters are placed between the two poles of order anddiscipline, on one side, and traumatic shock leading to disorder, on the other. The evolution of this lineof representation corresponds to the process of subjectivization that Dickens’s characters undergo, moving from a first moment of subjection to the symbolic Law to an ultimate moment of access toknowledge or truth, a real subjective revolution.

De l'UN à l'autre : subjectivation au temps de l'enfance / From One to the Other : Subjectivation at Childhood Time

Keiser Weber, Gaby 19 January 2013 (has links)
The concept of subjectivization guided the progress of this thesis, to understand the reorganizations in the processes of the subjective self-construction of the child, caught in the dominant discourses of our postmodern time. The creation of a differentiated psychic space inherent to the processes of subjectivization, poses at the outset the link to the Other and the link to the others within the family and social institution in which the child evolves. The impact on the subjective construction processes was explored from the angle of the school, according to the father-mother-child triangulation and its repetition in the school-parents-child triangulation. An historical approach of the academic institution has enabled to extricate five clinical changeovers, showing an evolution in the places assigned to the different school partners and the respective idealized roles, affecting the subjective and intersubjective issues. The relationship with the father will arise from the filiation / affiliation articulation, developed from the concepts and issues of naming and identification. The function of the imaginary father (paternal imago) will be examined and seems hindered by the shadow cast by the maternal Other. This impediment, leaning on the dominant discourses of immediacy erasing the generation difference, seems to put up a stumbling block on the imaginary phallic function deployment at the time of childhood. The impediment of this "future to come”, carried by the oedipal promise, seems to highlight the fraternal term, built at the time of the intrusion complex. The social Other is called in substitution, always earlier in the process of subjectivization at the time of the childhood. This process cannot be conceived without the Other, in order to find the path the One to the other.

Rizzo, Luisa Maria Nunes Vieira January 2008 (has links)
Any therapeutic project implies training people to be able to innovate, invent, and create. This is the origin of the desire for increasing our knowledge regarding the individual’s creative dimension and life power, as well as in terms of ways to create environments that stimulate self-invention and the invention of the world. This interest served as the basis for the analysis of an experience involving a group of craftswomen and an artist. The objective of this study is to present such experience. Based on the concept of Happening created by Gilles Deleuze, and having patchwork as the means, this experience relates ways of working to ways of practicing subjective analysis. This experience is based on the assumption that the way people work with patchwork constitutes a creative aesthetics of opportunities and transformations, producing new ways of being. The topic of attention, according to the concept created by Henry Bergson, is one the essential elements in the process of search for freedom to consider aesthetics and the way we use the environments. From getting familiar with still machines to the transformation of this equipment into subjectivizing devices, this is the process we intended to show, and such a process is summarized in this text.

Situamos as práticas religiosas no amplo campo da cultura para, em seguida, estudarmos o exercício do poder pastoral / Abstract: In this research we analyzed the practices of body interdiction detected in society with repercussions for school. Field observation was established on the boundaries between church and school, and between religion and science. The focus of attention was on a body situated in this territory. When we investigated the practices of interdiction operated on the body, we identified the marks of subjectivization policies that cross the educational processes. We analyzed an interdiction practice for the movement and control manner of adolescent bodies from signs collected during Physical Education class throughout my teaching experience. Furthermore, we traced the clues as to what escapes from the mechanisms of power seizure. We interpreted some body practices observed during Physical Education class in a public school that records numerous conflicts with the injunction of evangelical churches aimed at educational processes. We analyzed the senses attributed to Physical Education and the solutions elaborated by teachers faced with challenges identified in gestures to control student bodies. In the context of interdiction exercised by bodies, we inquired: 1) Which subjectivization processes result from interdiction practices of adolescent bodies? 2) What are the marks of disruptive elements on an interdicted body? 3) Why are the educator and school unable to help the student emerge from the role of hostage in the condition of interdicted body? In an effort to answer these questions, we described body movement in Physical Education class and we listened to discourses on the effects of the interdiction experience that occur with students. We located religious practices in the broad field of culture to subsequently study the exercise of pastoral power. We identified signs of student disruption and explored the possibilities of educator intervention in the place where the educator establishes his relationship / Mestre
