Sacco, Helene Gomes January 2014 (has links)
Tahové a únavové zkoušky tenkých vláken a fólií / Tensile and Fatigue Testing of Thin Fibres and Foils

Štěrbáček, Jaroslav January 2008 (has links)
A testing system MTS Tytron 250 with an original construction was bought at the Institute of Physics of Materials, AVCR v.v.i. The main aim of this diploma thesis was to obtain experiences with the controlling of the system and with its advantages and limitations. The tensile tests were performed on Al fibres with diameters of 125 micrometer, 180 micrometer a 500 micrometer, nylon fibres of 250 micrometer and 500 micrometer and tensile and cyclic tests on Al foil of 77 micrometer in thickness. It was found that the machine is suitable for testing of either subtle specimens with low loading forces or specimens with low stiffness as e.g. polymers or very long metallic or ceramic fibres. On the other side, the Tytrom system is not able to perform tests on specimens with a high stiffness and high loading forces. Material parameters were determined with a high reproducibility. Advantages and limitations of several types of subtle specimen's fixation into the grips were studied too.

Few years ago, it was widely spread the notion that there was no racism in Brazil and that the social conditions were the main problem of black population. Nowadays, however, it seems that the majority of Brazilians has realized there is, indeed, racism in Brazil. The nature of racial prejudice against black people raises many questions. Here we had proposed to explore one of these questions: the relationship between subtle prejudice, explicit prejudice and tendency to Fascism. We hypothesized that subtle and explicit prejudice against black people are correlated to a tendency to Fascism. To investigate this hypothesis, it was applied a questionnaire to 103 students of a Business Administration School, who self-declared being white. It was performed a critical social research. The questionnaire was composed by the F-scale (Fascism) blatant prejudice and subtle prejudice. In our results it was found a correlation between F-scale and both types of prejudice. In addition, we found a higher mean in the F-scale, subtle prejudice and blatant prejudice, respectively. The most relevant correlation occurred between F-scale and subtle prejudice. We interpreted that students with subtle prejudice against black people have higher tendency to Fascism. It was done a factor analyses with the principal factor method. We concluded from the correlation and the data analysis that the subtle prejudice signalizes similarities between psychological conditions and adhesion to Fascism and the contemporary racist ideology. We suggested that the need of social measures for black and white people should be followed by a critic perspective and by changes of social conditions that lead to authoritarianism / Ao longo dos últimos anos, muitas pessoas mudaram sua percepção sobre a desigualdade racial no Brasil.

SUN PIECE : actions of cutting

Gram, Greta January 2013 (has links)
This works explores how to work with Event scores as a design method. In the search for what is real or what is reality the already existing things are being explored. The work started with investigating suitable ways to work with the moving body in the design process, with the aim to find a method that gave control but also left some parameters to the undecided and ambiguous. Convinced that this will lead to something new some parts of the process were highlighted and re-formulated. / Program: Modedesignutbildningen

Analysis of Micro-Expressions based on the Riesz Pyramid : Application to Spotting and Recognition / Analyse des micro-expressions exploitant la pyramide de Riesz : application à la détection et à la reconnaissance

Arango Duque, Carlos 06 December 2018 (has links)
Micro-expressions are brief and subtle facial expressions that go on and off the face in a fraction of a second. This kind of facial expressions usually occurs in high stake situations and is considered to reflect a humans real intent. They have been studied to better understand non-verbal communications and in medical applications where is almost impossible to engage in a conversation or try to read the facial emotions or body language of a patient. There has been some interest works in micro-expression analysis, however, a great majority of these methods are based on classically established computer vision methods such as local binary patterns, histogram of gradients and optical flow. Considering the fact that this area of research is relatively new, much contributions remains to be made. ln this thesis, we present a novel methodology for subtle motion and micro-expression analysis. We propose to use the Riesz pyramid, a multi-scale steerable Hilbert transformer which has been used for 2-D phase representation and video amplification, as the basis for our methodology. For the general subtle motion analysis step, we transform an image sequence with the Riesz pyramid, extract and lifter the image phase variations as proxies for motion. Furthermore, we isolate regions of intcrcst where subtle motion might take place and mask noisy areas by thresholding the local amplitude. The total sequence is transformed into a ID signal which is used fo temporal analysis and subtle motion spotting. We create our own database of subtle motion sequences to test our method. For the micro-expression spotting step, we adapt the previous method to process some facial regions of interest. We also develop a heuristic method to detect facial micro-events that separates real micro-expressions from eye blinkings and subtle eye movements. For the micro-expression classification step, we exploit the dominant orientation constancy fom the Riesz transform to average the micro-expression sequence into an image pair. Based on that, we introduce the Mean Oriented Riesz Feature descriptor. The accuracy of our methods are tested in Iwo spontaneous micro-expressions databases. Furthermore, wc analyse the parameter variations and their effect in our results.

Speaking of Myself: Independence, Self-Representation, and the Speeches of Rudyard Kipling

Wilkes, Jacob M. 25 March 2009 (has links) (PDF)
Rudyard Kipling is a man of immense diversity. He successfully managed to write for over half a century in a variety of genres: short story, travelogue, ballad, personal narrative, and news reporting, to name only a few. While doing so, Kipling readily interacted with a range of subjects and created a multitude of ideas. Likewise, on a personal level, Kipling led an immensely diverse life. He could easily claim four separate continents as home, living variously in India, the United States, England, and South Africa. By profession he was a writer, but as an observer he was so skilled that he learned by heart a variety of professions ranging from street beggar to statesman. Both before and after his life, this variety and complexity has been a subject of debate. Some ignore it, others focus on a particular side of it, but for all it represents an interesting challenge in both studying and classifying Kipling. This thesis seeks to address that challenge by focusing on how Kipling's varying and competing images and ideas work together to assert Kipling's independence. In doing so, this work will look specifically at how Kipling uses multifaceted techniques in his public speeches. In looking at the speeches, the thesis explores three ways in which multiplicity reinforces independence: the combination of privacy and creation, the refashioning of expert detail and self-image, and the fusion of simplistic structure and subtle complexity.

Bellemare, Karine 09 1900 (has links)
Chicha (2009) observes a ‘’black hole’’ in publications regarding the process that allows for a a higher rate of employment deskilling of immigrant women with university education; a ‘’black hole’’ that is considered to be a real problem. On one hand, the Quebec government is trying to implement immigration policies to increase the recruiting of immigrants with higher human capital, in the hope that they will readily find employment. On the other hand, a higher rate of employment diskilling in this group of workers shows that there is a dichotomy between their actual situation on the job market, and the government’s political objectives. Therefore, there appears to be systemic discrimination on the subject of employment diskilling targeting immigrant workers. In order to address this social justice issue and in the hope of getting a better understanding of the process that leads to employment diskilling of immigrant women, we hope this thesis will better define the concept of discrimination in employment and set the table for implementing more efficient policies that will effectively fight this particular type of discrimination. We consider that the holistic views that caracterize the systemic approach make it the best way to explain this ‘’black hole’’. We have met with 52 university-educated immigrant women; they have shared with us their professional work experience prior to and following their emigration to Canada. We addressed numerous issues such as their education; their professional experience; their planing for the migration of their family; the active steps they took both for the recognition of their foreign university degrees and for getting a job; their workplace experience, etc. The results of our research reveal that discrimination remains an issue in the job market in xv Quebec. Furthermore, issues relating to ethnic origin and skin color still permeate attitudes, behaviors and language, targeting immigrant women with university education in the job market. Van Laer & Janssens (2011) typologies were useful for identifying attitudes, behaviors and comments which could be considered subtle racism. We hope that one of the contributions of the present thesis will be the improvement of the systemic analysis framework , which will lead to a better understanding of university-educated immigrant women. Diverse theories pertaining to social psychology such as similarity attraction theory; social categorisation theory, LMX, (Roberson & Block, 2001) make it possible to refine this systemic analysis framework, and allow for a better understanding of the sometimes complex relations that can develop between individuals and result in open or subtle racism.
