The Silent Pandemic of Suicides in Spain : A Political Discourse Analysis of the Debate Surrounding the Issue of Suicide and Mental Health

Uriarte Mencía, Garbiñe January 2023 (has links)
In 2022 Spain recorded its highest suicide rates in history. Spanish politicians acknowledge the need for solutions but fail to agree on adequate ones that could help decrease the current upward trend in suicides. The study aims to analyse practical argumentations advanced by politicians during the 2022 Parliamentary debate where the issue of suicide was addressed, to explore the place suicide has in the decision-making process, to investigate the reasons for and against concrete ways of acting regarding the issue, and to understand how these arguments align with current political ideologies. This will deepen the understanding of the political response to the suicide crisis. To achieve this aim, the research applies Isabela and Norman Fairclough’s Political Discourse Analysis framework. The findings show that suicide is not addressed as the public health crisis it constitutes, and it is overshadowed by political power dynamics where regional nationalistic ideologies play a big role.

Ett livsviktigt arbete : En kvalitativ intervjustudie av biståndshandläggares perspektiv på suicidpreventivt arbete med äldre / A Matter of Life and Death : A Qualitative Interview Study of Care Managers’ Perspective on Suicide Prevention for the Elderly

Ahlgren, Pernilla, Drugge, Simon January 2023 (has links)
The purpose of this qualitative study is to investigate and analyze how care managers experience working with suicide prevention with the elderly. The study explores identified potential factors of success and perceived obstacles in the care managers current manner of operations. Additionally, the interviewees have suggested various ways on how to improve their current working methods. The data was collected by interviewing ten care managers and later analyzed by means of thematic analysis and applying Antonovsky’s salutogenic approach to wellness. This theoretical framework suggests the importance of an individuals’ ‘sense of coherence’ (SOC) for handling the hardships of life. Antonovsky suggests that the receivers of care can get their SOC strengthened by a professional. The interviewees of this study report the importance of developing a working alliance between the care manager and the receiver of care. They also highlight a lack of knowledge and the need of further training. Additionally, the results suggest that professionals in the field of elderly care can, and should, cooperate interprofessionally to counteract the elderly care’s focus on physical health over the mental. Our findings also suggest that inclusion of professionals with hands-on experience could be helpful when developing new strategies or policies.

Att Störa Döden : Skolkuratorns roll i Suicidprevention

Kallin, Johanna, Wikner, Emelie January 2024 (has links)
The study explored school counselors' perceptions of suicide prevention work in secondary schools. The aim was to identify effective methods and challenges. Through qualitative interviews with six school counselors, it was found that relationship building, collaboration, and knowledge are crucial for effective suicide prevention. The respondents emphasized the importance of strong relationships with students and cooperation with school staff for early interventions. The biggest challenges were resource shortages, lack of knowledge, and parental involvement. Sense of Coherence was used as the theoretical framework to analyze how school counselors manage their work. The results showed that a high degree of comprehensibility, manageability, and meaningfulness among the school counselors enhances their suicide prevention efforts. The study concluded with suggestions on how schools can improve their efforts by strengthening staff competence and increasing resources for student health services.

Conversations with survivors of suicide: old stories and new meanings

Mandim, Leanne 01 January 2001 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to provide descriptions of conversations with survivors of suicide, including their relationships with the persons who committed suicide, the relationships that followed these deaths, their experiences of suicide, and the way that they made sense of these deaths. The epistemological framework of this dissertation is ecosystemic and social constructionist. This study involved in-depth interviews with three suicide survivors, exploring personal and professional domains. Thematic analysis was the method used to generate patterns of meaning. The researcher recounted the research participants' stories and punctuated emergent themes and patterns according to what she deemed important. Each story was contextualised, and included reflections of the researcher. Themes both common and unique to each participant story were highlighted and discussed. The information yielded from this study could have value to survivors of suicide and psychotherapists whose clients commit suicide. / Psychology / M.A. (Clinical Psychology)

Juozapavičienė, Dalia 07 September 2010 (has links)
Darbe atlikta teorinė bendradarbiavimo kultūros ugdymo įstaigoje tarp socialinių pedagogų ir klasės auklėtojų analizė. Iškelta hipotezė, jog efektyviai pedagoginei pagalbai (savižudybių prevencijai) įgyvendinti trukdo nepakankamas socialinių pedagogų ir klasės auklėtojų bendradarbiavimas. Anketinės apklausos metodu buvo atliktas tyrimas, kurio tikslas - atskleisti socialinių pedagogų ir klasės auklėtojų bendradarbiavimo ypatumus. Atlikta statistinė duomenų analizė. Tyrime dalyvavo 263 pedagogai. 2. Socialiniai pedagogai bei klasės auklėtojai nepakankamai aktyviai bendradarbiauja dirbdami savo darbą bei mokosi iš savo patirties: sieja teorines ir praktines žinias, apmąsto vartojamus darbo metodus bei galimus alternatyvius problemų sprendimo variantus, domisi grįžtamąja informacija, iškilusius klausimus aptaria konsultuodamiesi ir bendradarbiaudami su kolegomis. 3. Atlikus tyrimą paaiškėjo, jog hipotezė efektyviai pedagoginei pagalbai (savižudybių prevencijai) įgyvendinti trukdo nepakankamas socialinių pedagogų ir klasės auklėtojų... Well-Being and Ethnic Identity Promotion for Aboriginal Youth: A Community Based Mixed Methods Study of Tribal Journeys

Smethurst, Tania 29 April 2013 (has links)
There are significant mental health disparities in Aboriginal communities in Canada as a result of historical assimilation policies (Health Canada, 2012). One approach to mitigating these mental health concerns is through prevention programs that include a wilderness component. Wilderness based programs for Aboriginal youth are informed by cultural wisdom and empirical research that connects immersion in nature with psychological well-being. The goal of this study was to collaborate with two community partners (Nala Winds canoe family from the Heiltsuk First Nation, and Victoria Native Friendship Centre) to develop an evaluation tool that will satisfy mainstream funding standards as well as community, cultural standards. This tool-kit was designed to reflect the youth experience and mental health consequences of Tribal Journeys, an annual canoe journey program for Coastal First Nations peoples. The findings were shared with community partners and may be helpful in facilitating the creation, maintenance, and evaluation of other Aboriginal youth programs. / Graduate / 0620 / 0347 / 0621 / tansmethurst@gmail.com
