Does the Recommended Teaching Align with Best Practices forFostering Students’ Willingness to Communicate? : An Analysis of the English Subject Syllabus in Upper-Secondary School in Sweden

Lundkvist, Daniel January 2022 (has links)
The important aspect of speaking in an L2 classroom is well-known for language acquisition to occur. But what happens when students, for whatever reason, are unwilling to communicate. In that case, teachers must apply different pedagogical practices to support them. With this in mind, this degree project essay aims to investigate the English syllabus in upper-secondary school in Sweden to explore what recommendations teachers are given to increase learners’ willingness to communicate orally. The analysis of the English syllabus is done using a constructed framework based on previous research on the best pedagogical practices to increase students’ willingness to communicate and explore if there is an alignment between the two. The findings show that the most often-included suggestions aligned with international best practices are: connecting the teaching to students’ knowledge and experiences, providing students with linguistic competence, and providing students with different interactional activities with different purposes. The essay will further give some pedagogical recommendations and future research directions.

A Study of Injury and its Prevention in First-Year University Dance Students

Henn, Erica D. January 2016 (has links)
The subject of dance and injury has become an increasingly important area of study for sports medicine, education, and dance studies. However, the majority of current research focuses on professional dancers or pre-professional dancers in a conservatory training context. The research typically overlooks dancers in a university setting who pursue baccalaureate-level dance programs. This small-scale research study therefore focuses on collegiate dancers in their first year of study in a liberal arts dance program. As this population often sustains injuries, the thesis project seeks to examine the management of injury strategies and to create injury prevention guidelines for the liberal arts dance department, its dance classes, and a hypothetical syllabus for a first-year injury prevention course. The research methodology adopts three approaches: a survey of the incoming freshman dance class at Temple University; a detailed study of six previously or currently injured dance students through interview; and a critical assessment of the research on dance injury. The injury prevention guidelines developed from the student injury surveys, interviews, and assessments will focus on basic, yet essential, information regarding injury management and misconceptions, and the guidelines will prepare collegiate-level dancers for future injury challenges they may face. / Dance

Styrdokument och historieläroböcker : En studie av styrdokumentens påverkan på historieläroböcker under 1900-talet

Barstorp, Erik January 2024 (has links)
Governing documents for the schools are politically produced documents which constitute instructions from the government for how teaching in the school should be conducted. The purpose of this essay has been to investigate how, why and to what degree teaching plans and curriculum and course plans in the subject of history for the compulsory school came to influence the factual content of history textbooks and historiography during the 20th century. To answer this purpose, a qualitative text analysis of four governing documents and six textbooks, as well as a quantitative content analysis of the textbooks, has been carried out. The focus of the analysis has been defined by selecting a theme, "The Middle Ages". Furthermore, a theory based on Jörn Rüsen's four levels of historical awareness has been applied to the results of the analysis of the governing documents, this to provide a better insight into how and why the governing documents came to influence history textbooks during the 20th century. The results of the survey showed that the instructions of the governing documents affected the content of the textbooks, the exception being a textbook published in 1929 which turned out to be a textual copy of an earlier edition. The teaching plan from 1955 was the guiding document in the survey that most clearly, or in the highest degree, influenced the textbooks. Furthermore, the results have shown that the history writing and factual content in the textbooks have changed over time in accordance with the instructions of the governing documents and the currently prevailing level of history awareness.

It is required, from people and organizations, efforts that bring alternatives for living together with technological changes: both economic and social ones, in all fields of knowledge, specially in Education. So, people who bring up people need to make an upgrade of their educational practices, over and over thinking about institutions syllabus, in order to promote professionals and society development, in general. The secretary, inserted in this context, deserves special attention, for being somebody of extreme importance at the part, suffered prejudices by doing simple and daily activities, known as being typical of feminine universe. This way, the general aim of this research was to investigate how the secretary’s formation has been developed at the Federal University of Ceará (UFC), in relation to transformations lived by the contemporaneous society and if this very formation conducts to the construction of an autonomous person. The specific aims were related to describe what would be the demands, in terms of competence and habilities, showed by that secretary that the global work requires, analyzing the concept this professional has about his own role, his autonomy and his performance today. For giving a support to this study, it was turned to the matters about Syllabus, Autonomy, Citizenship, Professional formation, Competences and Habilities, Syllabus Directions, among other ones. As a methodological proceeding, this research was, concerning on its aims, descriptive and also bibliographic, documental and a field one, making use of interview and a questionnaire too, and accomplishing a deep study about the executive secretary’s formation graduated by UFC, permitting a whole and detailed knowledge about him. Admitted and seniors students, as well as professors and former students, besides companies/organizations directors, in short, everywhere existed the post of executive secretary. It was concluded that the professional formation has been directed to the work market and because of this it is quested the autonomous person arising, being this autonomy very restricted, provided that the decision power occurs in the secretary’s area of actuation and he is not a real participant of the strategic decisions. Competences and habilities are related to activities like to advise, administrate the chronology, being a leader, direct, develop support activities for decisions, but also doing traditional tasks as prepare the boss note book and serve coffee. They staff workers, consider themselves important at the organizations, but show they are afraid of loosing the job. It was proved the necessity of students promote the graduation course spreading as well as the professional secretaries to engage in a movement of strengthen of their syndicate, requiring improvements for their professions as autonomy and the citizenship exercising.

The piano duet as teaching medium : an overview and selective syllabus for the beginner pianist

Scriba, Gisela Waldtraut 21 September 2010 (has links)
Duet playing should form an integral part of the development of all young pianists. Personal development, reduction of performance anxiety and skills such as listening, rhythmic stability and sight-reading are but a few components that can be improved through duet playing. Piano playing is mostly a lonely activity and one of the best ways to counteract this isolation is to become involved in collaborative musicianship through duet playing. The piano duet has an extended history, beginning in the Pre-Baroque and reaching its pinnacle during the Romantic period. After dwindling interest in the early twentieth century, renewed attention has recently been given internationally to duet playing and composition, resulting in large numbers of new duet publications. It is a matter of concern that duet playing is sadly neglected in the tuition of many beginners. This may be due to factors such as lack of knowledge of duet repertoire, difficulty in obtaining such repertoire and problems with incorporating still another aspect in the piano lesson. To provide some guidelines for the teacher, practical considerations such as partner compatibility, leadership, repertoire and publication choice, memorising, page turning and the preparation process have been investigated. Technical aspects are dealt with because adjustments are needed during duet playing compared to solo playing. These include seating, the position of the arms and hands, fingering, dynamic variety, balance, timing and the use of pedal. A factor contributing to the neglect of incorporating duet playing in teaching seems to be the difficulty in sourcing appropriate repertoire. Duet publications generally offer only limited guidelines concerning grading whereas duet repertoire lists include mostly advanced compositions using undefined grading over a broad spectrum. Beginner repertoire is seldom referred to in duet repertoire lists, which complicates the process of finding appropriate beginner repertoire. The fact that sheet music suppliers only have a limited variety of duet publications available exacerbates the problem. The researcher has endeavoured to find a solution for this problem by devising a selective syllabus of beginner duets. Because no relevant grading system is available, such a system had to be devised. The publications of six well-known piano beginner methods were analysed to establish the basic sequence in which musical concepts are introduced to the beginner pianist. Following these guidelines a grading system of eight levels has been developed. A search for duet repertoire has been undertaken by scrutinising a piano curriculum, various piano duet examination syllabi as well as the researcher’s duet collection, and by investigating the availability of repertoire in libraries, sheet music suppliers and on the Internet. Subsequently suitable duets were played and graded. The outcome of this dissertation is a suggested graded duet syllabus for the beginner pianist. A compact disc of selected piano duets performed by the author and a partner is included. / Dissertation (MMus)--University of Pretoria, 2010. / Music / unrestricted

A comparative study of the English language syllabus for the secondary school level in Sweden and Japan with a focus on communicative competence

Kimoto, Simona January 2021 (has links)
The aim of this master’s thesis is to compare the English syllabus for secondary school in Sweden and the English syllabus for (the age equivalent) junior high school level in Japan, with a focus on communicative competence as it is defined by Canale and Swain (1980). Moreover, the results of the syllabus analysis are compared with qualitative data gathered from in depth, semi-structured interviews with three active English teachers from secondary school in each of the respective countries. The qualitative data is discussed on its own and the teachers’ views, their teaching practices and their interpretations of the syllabus are contrasted with the directives and teaching guidelines described in the two formal syllabi.   The objective of this thesis is to shed light on similarities and differences between what the English language syllabus for secondary school in Sweden and Japan suggest about communicative competence, and compare the findings with teachers’ interpretation and implementation of the syllabus.   The findings of the study reveal significant differences in the way the syllabi treat communicative competence and this is corroborated by the teacher interviews. Though both syllabi have set developing communication skills as an outcome, the analysis highlights key distinctions between the documents. Qualitative data gathered from respondents further distinguishes the way CLT has been implemented in Sweden and Japan.

Cybersecurity in the Technology Subject from the Swedish Perspective : Investigation, Analysis, and Evaluation Tool / Cybersäkerhet i teknikämnet från det svenska perspektivet : Undersökning, analys och utvärderingsverktyg

Mushtaq, Wafaa January 2020 (has links)
This thesis contains pioneer work in Sweden which contributes to the research on cybersecurity teaching within the Technology subject as formulated in the course and subject governing documents. The work goes in line with a bigger strategy of the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB) and the European Union (EU). A discourse analysis was performed on the interviews with four Swedish expertsfrom MSB, Internetstiftelsen, and #290CyberSecurity respectively where the interview questions were formulated around three axes; the first axis was the cybersecurity content and knowledge aimed at young individuals, the second axis was the experts’ views on teaching cybersecurity starting from lower secondary schools, and the third axis was regarding platforms or tools that could be used in cybersecurity teaching and what the experts’ perceptions on them are. The analysis resulted in six different codes and formulated the views of the experts. Content analysis was also performed on information from the experts’ organizations which were 14 security documents and reports in total that resulted in a content frame of ten cybersecurity areas. All the ten areas were found to be related to the keywords that appear in the governing documents of the Technology subjects in the course syllabus for grades 7-9 and the subject syllabus for Technology 1. Current cyber attacks and risks threatening young students were further analyzed under each area to narrow down the content frame tailoring it to young students. A new online evaluation tool was then developed to assess the cybersecurity sensibility of the young students. The formulation of the questions was inspired by the SANS cybersecurity awareness survey as well as based on both, the ten cybersecurity areas that are categorized in this thesis and the different scenarios of risks and cybersecurity attacks threatening young students. Domain SamplingTheory (DST) and scenario-based questions were considered to make the tool more fitting for the young and minimize the errors. The tool tested a random group of 250 students from 12 municipalities where110 were in the sixth grade and 140 in the ninth. The tool showed that despite students spending most of their time online using different devices and applications, they are not secure enough which puts them at risk. Moreover, most of the students were interested in getting cybersecurity education and very few received it in schools even though the cybersecurity requirements are stated in the governing documents of the Technology subject.

Implications of multiple intelligence theory and integrated skills language teaching for textbook development : / the case of grade 9

Mengesha, Yohannes Tefera 09 1900 (has links)
The study aims to examine the extent to which considerations of syllabus design and materials development are employed in a grade 9 English textbook of Ethiopia- English for Ethiopia: Secondary English Course: Grade 9 Students Book with particular emphasis on Multiple Intelligence Theory (MIT).The study is an evaluation research which makes use of a mixed method approach. Data were collected using interviews, coding form and a teachers’ questionnaire. The study involved English language syllabus writers in the Ministry of Education in Ethiopia. Furthermore, 50% of the contents of the Grade 9 English Textbook (6 of 12) were used for content analysis. In addition, 218 Grade 9 English teachers from fifty high schools that were drawn from 6 Regional States of the country responded to the questionnaire. In line with this, I collected quantitative data using a coding form and a questionnaire, as well as other forms of qualitative data using interview. Data were analysed both qualitatively and quantitatively. The study revealed that the syllabus writers used the competency-based approach in developing the Grade 9 English language syllabus. However, this approach has some drawbacks. On the one hand, competency-based education is a manifestation of the behaviouristic approach that is excessively reductionist, narrow, rigid and atomized; many areas in which people need certain competencies are impossible to operationalise; the approach does not clearly show how the list of competencies could be realised, how they should be formatted and presented so as to address learner differences. Above all, describing an activity in terms of a set of different competencies is not enough in order to deal with the complexity of the learning process as a whole. Regardless of these drawbacks, CBL was used to identify and list down the contents as well as the learning outcomes to be incorporated in the textbook. Thus, the how aspect remain obscured in that a theory driven approach to developing teaching/learning materials that meet learners' differences was not markedly taken note of as a guiding framework in developing the Grade 9 English language syllabus. The study showed that the great majority of the language tasks are meant to nurture verbal/linguistic intelligence followed by interpersonal and intrapersonal intelligences respectively. As a language textbook, it is good that it gives more coverage to these two intelligence profiles. When it comes to intentional application of principles of task design and materials development, many of the listening, reading and speaking lessons are appropriate in terms of providing comprehensible input, engaging students cognitively and affectively, promoting emotional/affective involvement and facilitating better language use. Similarly, visual imaging is also well taken care of with exception of few of the vocabulary and the grammar lessons. The study also revealed that the syllabus writers were well aware of the need of integrating various language skills, and it was found that the issue of using the integrated approach to ELT materials development was also well addressed and most of the language tasks are designed in an integrated manner with the exception of few of the vocabulary and the grammar lessons. Some drawbacks were also identified with few of the vocabulary and the grammar lessons in terms of providing comprehensible input and enhancing language use. On the other hand, as implementers of the textbook, the target schools’ Grade 9 English language teachers have a good understanding of language learning theories and task design principles. This understanding could help them design supplementary language tasks for their English classes. At last, conclusions are drawn and recommendations are given. / English Studies / D. Litt. et Phil.
