Choosing the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme : Transnational Students creating Social Differentiation through School Choice in the Swedish Education MarketGonzalez, Rebecca Ysamar January 2018 (has links)
It is estimated that by 2025 there will be approximately 8.26 million students enrolled in over 15,000 international schools globally. This increased expansion of international schooling cannot be disconnected from a process of globalisation where neoliberal policies have influenced the growth of education markets. International schooling arrives as a welcomed option to students and families looking for alternatives to national programmes which are perceived to be rigid and unchanging in a new globalised economy. With enrolment rates increasing over twenty percent in the Americas, Asia-Pacific, Africa, Europe, and the Middle East regions, the International Baccalaureate Organisation is perhaps the fastest growing educational group offering international schooling around the globe. In this qualitative comparative case study, fourteen students enrolled in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) across four schools were asked about their experiences in the process of school choice in the Swedish education market. Semi-structured interviews were employed to explore student’s motivations and strategies in choosing the IBDP over national programmes. Utilising a grounded theory methodology linked with Bourdieu’s theories on symbolic capital, the study attempts to understand student’s choice behaviours. Findings revealed that regardless of social or educational background, students share similar motivations and strategies for choice making. Further analysis demonstrated that a collective perception of the IB alongside similar ideals of self-identity and class influence and legitimise their choice behaviours. The implication of these findings demonstrate that choice behaviours in the Swedish education market work to establish a degree of social reproduction and differentiation.

Den nya tidens storstadsman : En kvalitativ innehållsanalys om hur hegemonisk maskulinitet omförhandlas i podcasten “Alex och Sigges podcast” / The modern cityman : A qualitative content analysis on how hegemonic masculinity is reconstructed or challenged in the podcast "Alex and Sigges podcast".Andersson, Sofie, Skylling, Malin January 2018 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to examine the hegemonic masculinity that can be identified in the podcast “Alex och Sigges podcast”. In this study, a rhetorical analysis and a critical discourse analysis have been conducted. The study has also used the following theories: Raewyn Connells hegemonic masculinity, Pierre Bourdieus field and symbolic capital theory, homosociality, “power and media” and “humor and discours”. The material consists three chapters from the podcast, and these three chapters are: Stympad, Pysslingen and Där alla kan ditt namn. From these chapters, some conversation extracts have been selected, and then transcribed and analyzed. The content in the analysis is thematically divided, which is intended to visualize how the different parts reproduce or challenge hegemonic masculinity. These extracts, taken out from context, will be represented for the podcast in a broader perspective. In the end of the study there is a final discussion, which conclude results of the analysis combined with parts of the theoretical chapter. This study believes that the podcast “Alex och Sigges podcast” is creating a new type of ideal man through Schulman and Eklunds construction of hegemonic masculinity. By visualizing economic, social and cultural capital and using humor and laugh as a tool in their way to communicate, the podcast shows their listeners how hegemonic masculinity is maintained. Schulman and Eklund also challenge the prevailing masculinity norms, especially in their role as a father, where they show how a man can be sensitive, communicative and open about showing feelings to others. Hence, the title of the study, where they are successively creating “a modern cityman”.

Previous issue date: 2010-11-05 / Não informada / This thesis aims to show how the economic capital (performativity) influence the migration of Science Discourse (SD) for the Science Communication Discourse (SCD). It was chosen the Discourse Analysis of French line methodology. The corpus was formed by four articles of trade magazine Superinteressante, for the months of January, February, March and May 2009. The period was randomly determined. We use the theory as a hypothesis of Agenda-Setting as influential in the process of migrating the SD for the SCD. We assume that news is a fact or an idea that interests a large number of readers as well as journalistic objectivity in the process of production of matter, that is, news is what journalists believe that interests the public. We verified that not everything that is being discussed by society migrate to SCD. We note that the performativity of news becomes one of main factors in this process, which can manifest through two ways. The first is by economic capital and the second by symbolic capital. The result is a change in formulation of Discourse on Science Communication.

and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and, perceived as a symbolic capital of socially shared
mode, the historic heritage delimits an area in which its social agents take positions and
redefines cultural life and the destiny of this city. The theme’s choice results of our exploratory
inquiries about City of Goiás’ daily that indicated the reordering of urban, due this process,

to the colonial order. Are unconscious principles, anchored in the old ways of life, which
legitimize unequal distribution of social capital inherent in the collective heritage and establish
new expressions of power based on traditionalism. The analysis includes the conformation and
demarcation of the heritage's area, as well as its relationship with the Ethos of traditionalism
and, also, the empirical basis, through interviews and questionnaires applications, such as
people's perceptions correlate material and symbolic deprivations with distribution's form of
modalities of capital represented by the historic heritage and the very title of World Heritage.
destinos desta cidade.
A análise

Manifestace diskursivních hierarchií ve spotřebě a jejich proměna v kontextu finanční krize / Manifestation of Discursive Hierarchies in Consumption in the Context of Financial CrisisŠrám, Kristián January 2015 (has links)
This thesis seeks to analyze how social position is negotiated by particular consumption practices. Thesis is theoretically based upon social-constructivist claims that reality is a social construct that comprises of continuously negotiated meanings. That implies that observed phenomena, such as among others consumption and social position, are seen as constituted by the cultural and symbolic dimensions of society. Methodological basis of the thesis is qualitative research. In the context of consumer behavior research I follow the research stream of consumer culture theory. Key findings of the study are that discourses on consumption are partially determined by social position while higher classes are comparatively more reflexive in their interpretations of consumption. However, social boundaries are not strictly given which creates a space for negotiating one`s social position. That might be accomplished by reinterpretation of social position. Prominent strategies of such reinterpretations were defined by discourses of neoliberalism and egalitarism. Another option consists of transgressing the economic boundaries by utilizing cultural capital. However, in the Czech society there has not yet been developed a clear consensus on what cultural capital consists of - that creates even more potential for negotiating one`s own social position.

The purpose of this research is to understand the hierarchical boundaries formed in social fractions selected of Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais. Considering the information from the interviews with individuals of different profiles, we found symbolic hierarchies and distinctive markers in the local high society. In order to do not reduce the empirical object analyzed in terms of social classes, people interviewed were grouped into three groups, named here emerging, traditional and anonymous, as their similarities and peculiarities. Questioning the very applicability of the concept of social class in this review, the analysis of the interviews showed aspects disregarded in some classist approaches: the valuation of ancestry and visibility in local media (social column). In this sense, the research explores such hierarchical differences among members of those three groups, and shows the struggles around distinction, in which it is disputed the domain of symbolic capital and distinctive markers.

VANLIGA MÄNNISKOR, MISSBRUKARE, FÖRBRYTARE OCH REKREATIONSANVÄNDARE EN MIXED-METHODS STUDIE AV PERSONER SOM DÖMTS FÖR NARKOTIKAKÖP PÅ INTERNETTiberg, Fredrik January 2019 (has links)
The purpose of the thesis is to investigate the characteristics of persons who are sentenced for purchasing illicit drugs on the internet, and how the legal system describes the social situation and motives of the convicted persons. The thesis uses a mixed-method methodology with both quantitative and qualitative analysis. The empirical material consists of documents in the form of judgments and preliminary investigation protocols. The quantitative analysis has examined the demography, previous criminal records and the sanctions of 222 convicted persons. The qualitative analysis has examined how the social situation and motives of the convicted persons are described by the judicial system. Pierre Bourdieu's theory of capital forms constitutes the theoretical starting point of the essay. Drug markets can be regarded as fields which, to varying degrees, require symbolic capital. The characteristic of the drug markets on the internet is that they do not require symbolic capital. The result of both the quantitative and qualitative analysis is that the convicted buyers are described as a heterogeneous group in the documents of the legal system. The convicted are a diverse group regarding age, geography and choice substances. Some of the convicted are described as ordinary people with organized social conditions. Others convicted are described as having major problems with mental illness, drug abuse and crime. The descriptions of the motives for purchasing drugs on the internet are to access substances of a certain quality, quantity, price or type. But also, to access a different kind of relationship between the buyer and the seller of drugs.

This essay examines the impact of estimation for the training’s added value in life on level of physical training. Through a multiple-regression analysis of primary data, the study presents what impact a particular background has on the physical exercise’s position in a life puzzle of a Swedish young adult. The theoretical framework is based on the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu’s theories of habitus, symbolic capital, symbolic value and symbolic violence. According to these concepts, all individuals operate within specific fields, within which they also hold a position. Practices and social agents in the various fields shape what Bourdieu calls habitus, an individual set of schemes that shape tastes a values. These theories help us understand why people perform different targeted actions in life based on their gender, class and grew up place. Data have been collected through a quantitative survey. The material consists of questionnaires from 179 young adults from Sweden between the ages of 19-29. The bivariate regression analysis could not prove a significant correlation between estimation of the training’s added value in life and level of physical training. When a multivariate regression design included control variables a positive correlation between the training’s added value in life and level of physical training emerged. Gender, class and age also proved important for the level of training where being a female and coming from an entrepreneurial home increased the level of training. / <p>Tillgänglig på messenger (Jonathan Westerberg), alternativt sms (0700912052).</p>

The Power of Place: A Qualitative Evaluation of Stream Monitoring Data Usage by Decision-Makers in Dane County, WisconsinSemlow, Andrea R. 05 1900 (has links)
Has years of citizen-based nutrient sampling and baseline water quality monitoring efforts only had a "trivial" impact on natural resource management decisions? This thesis will explore this and other findings from a qualitative evaluation of the Rock River Coalition (RRC) citizen-based stream monitoring project in Dane County, Wisconsin, USA. These findings are the culmination of 47 semi-structured interviews with decision-makers from seven client-identified categories and participant observations of board meetings and other watershed groups. Interview questions focused on current strategies of data design and dissemination with the goal of constructing a clearer picture of existing data usage by Dane County decision-makers. In the wider picture of citizen science and community-based research, this case study aims to highlight barriers to data use and potential solutions. The results of this case study were understood through four key frames: (1) Bourdieu's concept of symbolic capital, (2) Barzilai‐Nahon's theory of network gatekeeping, (3) Newman et al.'s framework for leveraging the power of place, and (4) a Foucauldian approach to the production of scientific knowledge. The findings of this study highlight the presence of gatekeeping mechanisms within the scientific field as well as government institutions, problematize the practice of placemaking, assert there is untapped symbolic capital to be wielded by citizen scientists, and trace the "innovation" of volunteer water monitoring data in Dane County.

[pt] DUAS FACES DE UM MESMO ESTRANHAMENTO: A PRÁTICA DO DESIGN E A CENOGRAFIA DA ÓPERA NA SOCIEDADE BURGUESA / [en] TWO SIDES OF THE SAME ESTRANGEMENT: THE PRAXIS OF DESIGN AND OPERA SCENOGRAPHY IN THE BOURGEOIS SOCIETYMATHEUS AUGUSTO CANNONE M DA SILVA 20 May 2021 (has links)
[en] In this work we examine the barriers between the design praxis and scenography production, based on the scenic production of opera. Both the design praxis and the scenography production are defended here as forms of labor, which means that these practices are analyzed on the lens of Marx fundamental category, where labor operates as the constitutional basis of social life and humankind. This also means that both these praxes are submitted to the transformations and contradictions that characterize the labor category in the bourgeois society. Especially that of the industrial division of labor and its consecutive estrangement, so as it s impacts on cultural production and social life. The concept of bourgeois society defended in this work is that of a spectacular society, where cultural production is the result of a constant growing domination of economic capital value over cultural capital value. Here, the praxis of design is comprehended as the result of such division of labor, as presented above, where its function resides in reorganizing the industrial production in order to subdue it, to this new social demands, by the managing of its estragemented production and by constantly configuring new forms of symbolic differentiation and exchange values. Opera is presented here as a social product of Modern Period culture, and its social function residing in the organization of the lyric theatre, an important social space for the occidental elites in that period, a space that was commodified and transformed into cultural merchandise with the bourgeois society. The scenographic production is also presented as an artisanal and not estragemented labor practice in its origin, and sees its transformation with the appearance of the modern cenic direction, and the set designer. A labour practice that also resides in symbolic differentiation and commodified configuration. It concludes that both praxis of design and scenography production, although distinct, shares a common moment in history due to both submission to the estrangement phenomenon and its social impacts.
